Mercedes-Benz develops powertrains based consistently on real-world customer needs and usage scenarios. The focus is not on a "one-size-fits-all" solution, but rather on providing the ideal powertrain for specific requirements. Every powertrain must deliver both dynamism and comfort; for instance, a driver who enjoys a dynamic driving style on the highway still expects a superior level of comfort when navigating city traffic.
The development of every powertrain system begins with a detailed understanding of actual customer behavior. Driving cycles, acceleration patterns, accelerator pedal inputs, towing operations, and hill starts are all translated into concrete development objectives. This process leads to the creation of an appropriate powertrain concept—initially via computer simulation—where power, torque, gear ratios, and control strategies are tested in countless virtual combinations long before any physical component is produced. This simulated behavior is subsequently measured and validated on test benches under real-world load and temperature conditions—for example, by analyzing how torque builds up or how performance is affected by high temperatures. Only then does the testing phase in an actual vehicle take place. This ensures that a Mercedes-Benz performs optimally under all conditions.
