00:51la Academia Board of Governors' unanimous choice.
00:54Él es el maestro, sus colegas calles Q, yo calles friend,
01:00y el mundo calles Mr. Jones, Mr. Quincy Jones.
01:12So now you know why I am so proud to give this Jeanne Hirschholt Humanitarian Award
01:19to my friend, I just love him, Mr. Quincy Jones.
01:47Thank you.
02:00It's nice to feel important.
02:03I think maybe a bit more important to feel, not be nice though.
02:07This moment, this evening, the spot where I stand tonight
02:13was not my destination when I was young and full of vinegar.
02:17I did not engineer this journey.
02:20To tell you the truth, I don't think I could even see this far.
02:23And now that I'm older and full of wonder,
02:27I can see that maybe other forces were at the wheel.
02:30You may have seen my mother Sarah in my music
02:33and witnessed the laughter and tears of my children, my family.
02:39They were the pillows beneath this life of mine.
02:42Theirs is the humanity reflected in this moment.
02:45You may be familiar with countless of shoulders that I stood upon
02:48to just see where I might go.
02:51They were the pillows that were beneath my life.
02:55Theirs is the humanity reflected in this moment.
02:58I also hope you can see reflections of the gift of friendship
03:03so generously given to me by Benny Carter, Sidney Poitier,
03:07Mo Austin, happy birthday, Mo, Clarence Avant, and Steve Ross,
03:11my gurus of givingness,
03:13and the multitude of others who too have been pillars beneath this life of mine.
03:17I accept this great honor in their names on this, the proudest day of my life.
03:24Thank you, governors of the academy, for including me in such prestigious company.
03:28And you Americans out there, please join the rising support
03:32for the National Endowment for the Arts.
03:45Each act of creation can be another powerful pillar beneath this life
03:49of this wonderful and troubled nation of ours.
03:53Who knows, the next artists we support may one day stand before you as I do now,
03:59humble, proud, cool, and so thankful.
04:04Thank you all.
04:12Paul Newman, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Tim Allen will join us next on the Academy Awards.
