Döküm
00:00Hi, this is Bin Naz from Turkey.
00:02How are you?
00:03So great to see you.
00:04You too.
00:04Good, you too.
00:05Nice to meet you.
00:06Yeah, I want to start by saying just for a second
00:09how much I appreciate you guys using your platforms
00:13to speak truth to power.
00:14It means a lot to a lot of us.
00:16So thank you.
00:17Thank you.
00:18Thank you for saying that.
00:19Thank you.
00:20So watching the Gilded Age,
00:22it's astonishing to see how little has changed since then
00:26in terms of extreme wealth inequality
00:30and those oligarchs that we have.
00:32But yet I find myself while watching rooting for you guys.
00:36I don't want the wrestlers to lose their money.
00:39I don't want them to get divorced.
00:41I don't want to lose them their influence.
00:43So how do you manage to make us root for them
00:47when in reality they represent so much
00:50of what we are fighting for?
00:52I have a theory about this.
00:54Okay, please, tell me.
00:55Which is, you know, the brilliant trick
00:58that I think Julian established,
01:00Julian Fellowes, our writer,
01:01and Sonia Warfield established in the first season,
01:04is that these people are outsiders
01:07and they're fighting to be insiders.
01:09Oh, yeah.
01:10Right?
01:10Even though they have all this money
01:11and they have all this power,
01:13there's still a world that's excluding them.
01:15And so that sense of that duality,
01:18that they can be both very powerful in material terms,
01:23but socially disadvantaged,
01:25I think that's what makes them,
01:27what gives them this sort of,
01:29this quality that you can root for.
01:31Especially also because the sort of ossified power structure
01:34in New York society at this time
01:36is so staid and boring
01:38and sort of like desperate to be disrupted.
01:41Yeah.
01:41And so, yeah, I think that's part of why it works
01:45is that there's this,
01:46and that's the thing I think people relate to
01:48is that sense of being an outcast, right?
01:51And even though we're so rich,
01:53we still represent that for a lot of people.
01:56Yeah.
01:56And a sexy, respectful marriage.
01:58People root for that too.
01:59So sexy.
02:01So our trained daddy and trained mommy
02:05were at a cliffhanger last season.
02:07and this season they're in full crisis mode.
02:10What can you tell us?
02:12Are they going to make it?
02:13Are they in couples therapy?
02:15Are they fighting for it?
02:16What's going to happen?
02:17I think Bertha's caught off guard
02:19by George's addiction.
02:21That's not something that's spoken about
02:22in polite society
02:23and arguably still has a lot of stigma
02:25attached to it now.
02:27And therefore she's really isolated,
02:30but she's never going to stop fighting
02:32for what she wants.
02:32She's not someone who gives up.
02:34No, I think too,
02:35I mean, I don't know
02:36how much of the season you've seen.
02:38I haven't seen all of it.
02:39Oh, you haven't seen all of it.
02:40Okay.
02:40But like, you know,
02:42what I was really struck by
02:43in the course of the season
02:44was that ultimately
02:45when things reach a crisis point
02:49and when George really destroys
02:52so much of what Bertha has spent
02:54the last three seasons building,
02:56she takes it so in stride
02:58that you're, you know,
03:00I find myself recalling
03:01that moment in the first season
03:03where she says, you know,
03:04he says, we might lose everything.
03:05And she says, well, I'll build it.
03:06You know, I'll build it
03:07all back up with you again.
03:08And, you know,
03:09that's the kind of thing
03:10people say to each other.
03:11And then maybe some,
03:12you in the, in the moment of crisis,
03:14maybe it isn't really true.
03:15And clearly what we see
03:16from Bertha this season,
03:17it is true.
03:18And she's actually so steady
03:19and she's so present
03:20and she never, you know,
03:21she, she really does,
03:23despite the stigma,
03:24despite the humiliation,
03:25she just absorbs it.
03:27And I think she demonstrates
03:28real, uh, real strength.
03:30this season.
03:31Integrity.
03:32Yeah, real integrity.
03:33The principles are affirmed.
03:35You're both at a very successful marriages.
03:37So if you can give
03:39one piece of advice,
03:41uh, for, uh,
03:42how to work on their marriage,
03:44what would you tell the Russells?
03:46Gotta be honest.
03:47Yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:49And George hasn't been honest.
03:50He's hiding addiction.
03:51Right.
03:52Among other things.
03:53I think he's, I mean,
03:53he's hiding so many,
03:55I think, I mean,
03:56this is the thing is I think
03:57thinking about this season,
03:59you know, the, the,
03:59the kind of introspection
04:01that I think post Freud
04:03has like become,
04:05you know, almost, you know,
04:06uh, this sort of constant aspect
04:08of how we, you know,
04:09even the idea of the self,
04:10like our sort of invest,
04:12the way we think about
04:12our interior lives
04:13is completely different
04:15than now than it was,
04:16I think in the late 19th century,
04:17not completely different,
04:18but in some ways,
04:19very strikingly different,
04:20certainly the way we talk
04:21about these things.
04:22Um, and so I think
04:24George's sense of what's
04:25going on with him is,
04:26I think is probably
04:28pretty primitive and,
04:29and, um, obscured
04:32even from himself.
04:33And so he's not able
04:34to communicate
04:34what he really needs,
04:36uh, as much as he tries,
04:39I think at certain points
04:40in this,
04:40he hasn't fully processed it yet.
04:41So he can't bring Bertha along.
04:43Exactly.
04:43I think that's right.
04:45I have to wrap up.
04:46Unfortunately.
04:47So nice seeing you.
04:48Thank you.
