00:00I'm Simon Jackson, one of the managers at the Acapulco, or should I say the famous now, Acapulco in Halifax.
00:05Let me just clarify, it's the club that's 65 and not me, although I'm pretty close to be fair.
00:10So yeah, 65 years old this year, which is, as far as I know, the oldest club ever.
00:16Hi, I'm Justin, I'm the manager of the Acapulco, and there's a lot of history about it.
00:21Myself personally, I've been here 10 years.
00:23It's just received a blue plaque for being the oldest nightclub in the country, which is an amazing accolade.
00:29The night time industry has changed dramatically over the years.
00:33Covid has had a massive effect on people's mentality of going out.
00:37Our over 30s is designed for allowing people to come out and be home in bed for 9 o'clock,
00:44cuddling a kebab.
00:45I'm about 24 and I'm now 63, and I'm still coming.
00:50I'm about 18 and I'm 70 now.
00:53My 20-year-old daughter comes to this club now, and I met her mum here as well.
00:59That's even wild to me.
01:01Last time I came here, I was 1987, when I was 20 years old.
01:06My husband in 1981 in the Acap, and also, this is my daughter.
01:10I'm now 35, and I've been coming here.
01:14I was 18.
01:16I came here to the Over 30s Disco a couple of weeks ago.
01:21It's my first time in 30 years, and it's an amazing time, so I brought my friends along
01:27today because I'm celebrating my 56th birthday.
01:32Back in the 80s, when I first ever worked here for the original owners of the Terzaks,
01:45it was quite strange because women used to put their handbags down in the middle of the
01:49dance floor and dance around them.
01:51Now, everybody gets their iPhones or whichever system they've got, taking photographs and
01:55selfies of themselves in the middle of a dance.
01:57I've been here for just over 10 years now.
02:00It's actually my second time here.
02:01I used to work here in the early 2000s, and I, like many people, actually started out as
02:06a regular here, so it's kind of spanned from that.
02:10I've been a DJ in Halifax for just over 32 years now.
02:14I think what gives the Acapulco its charm is the fact that it hasn't changed.
02:19I will know, I would say, a good three quarters of the people that have come into the building
02:23this afternoon.
02:24I'll have either worked with them, for them, or even served them.
02:27I'll play to them.
02:28And they're often the parents of the people that will be coming in tonight.
02:31This isn't just a nightclub.
02:33This is a legacy which lasts throughout the country.
02:36People know from all over the world where you go.
02:39Sometimes people call it the Disney of Halifax.
02:44Yeah, I guess there's something in that.
02:45You come out, you forget your worries.
02:48Too many people now tend to stay in.
02:49They have nowhere to go.
02:51And you find that getting out, meeting some more humans, and not just AI, talking to people.
02:57I think nightclub's a very important thing now to keep going.
