00:00Did you know the most expensive cyber attack in history was partly undone by a power outage in Ghana?
00:04It began on June 27, 2017, with a software update.
00:09Ukrainian companies used a tax program called MEDOC.
00:12Hackers secretly poisoned its update system.
00:15Thousands of computers installed the update, trusting it completely.
00:18Then screens went black.
00:20A message demanded money to unlock the files.
00:22It looked like ransomware.
00:23It was not.
00:24The malware, later called NotPetya, was effectively a wiper.
00:28Even if you paid, your files were not coming back.
00:31And it did not stay in Ukraine.
00:33It raced through company networks around the world.
00:36Shipping giant Maersk, drug maker Merck, and FedEx's TNT Express were all hit.
00:41Maersk reportedly had to rebuild thousands of computers.
00:44Every copy of its core network data seemed gone.
00:47Then someone found one survivor.
00:49A domain controller in Ghana had been offline during a power outage.
00:53It was never infected, and it held a clean copy.
00:55Governments, including the United States and United Kingdom, blamed Russia's military.
01:00Russia denied it.
01:01The estimated damage was around $10 billion.
01:04One poisoned update.
01:06One lucky blackout.
01:08Trust in your software can become the weakest link.
