00:29Os primeiros dos primeiros eram Iranian productions,
00:32although 1975's Far From Home
00:33was a co-production between West Germany
00:35and Iran, and followed Turkish expat
00:38workers operating within West Germany.
00:411976's Time Of Maturing,
00:42a.k.a. Reiferzeit,
00:44is a relatively simple film about
00:45a young German boy living with his mother,
00:47a sex worker, and is gradual to eventual
00:50outright realisation of her profession.
00:52Its ending is one of the most heartbreaking
00:53I have seen in a long time, and the
00:55film in general is something of a predecessor to
00:57Silas' 1983 masterpiece
00:59Utopia, a picture about the commodification
01:02of sex work and how it, or certainly
01:04can, reduces individual
01:05human worth to that of a functional device.
01:08Told mostly by
01:09static shots, if not entirely actually,
01:12Time Of Maturing is a window into this boy's
01:13perspective, and his mother's occasionally,
01:15depicting a world in which the average audience
01:17of the film might not be remotely privy to.
01:20According to a mini
01:21bio listed in this IMDB page,
01:23submitted by Free Gardens Film,
01:25Silas saw the goal of cinema to be
01:27to make conscious of indignity and
01:30inhumanity of life.
01:31I think he has certainly tried to do
01:33so in the films I have seen from him.
01:35I think he certainly succeeds
01:37in Time Of Maturing also,
01:39although I can imagine the film seeming
01:41a bit too flat, or even just ordinary,
01:43to certain viewers.
01:45I suspect that some viewers have a hostility
01:47to creative experimentation, anything
01:49that can be perceived as remotely pretentious,
01:51and so have a knee-jerk reaction against
01:53these sorts of films, potentially.
01:56Oh, I'd feel insecure about
01:57doing something so seemingly lofty,
01:59so no one ought to do so about being overly
02:01obvious and aggressively didactic
02:03and materialistically conservative.
02:06I think that if any film's
02:07premise was poised for this particular style,
02:09static shots, slice of life mundanity,
02:11black and white, minimalist dialogue,
02:13no overt A to B plot, although maybe kind of,
02:15and evidently appealing to
02:17known and recognised art house sensibilities,
02:19it is this one's.
02:22Some people believe
02:23that anything that can be criticised
02:25as pretentious ought to be.
02:51I hate that attitude of a passion.
02:53I really despise cynicism.
02:55It is a privilege of the developed world.
02:57You don't have time to be mocking and cynical
02:58in the third world. You hoped for the best one can make
03:00of their situation. Otherwise, one might not
03:03survive in the first place.
03:05Anyway, I find the film to be very powerful,
03:07rather filmic, and emotionally potent.
03:12If someone does not care for this film,
03:13I would potentially understand why.
03:15Certainly if one has seen a lot of films of this type,
03:17and simply isn't impressed by it creatively.
03:20Okay.
03:21Although if you're going to go into this
03:23with a, ooh, the people who appreciate this
03:25think they're better than me, so fuck
03:27Saurabh Salas's attempts to create architecture
03:29out of moving photography, or anyone else's
03:31for that matter, I guess.
03:33Sincerely, Velos.
03:34I really disdain that culture, becoming more prominent
03:36by the day seemingly, inspired or
03:39escalated by a burgeoning and phenomenally
03:41uninformed conservatism amongst the young
03:43people of my age, this culture of
03:45oh, everything is just emperor's new quos
03:47and we tell it like it is, with lizard-brained
03:49savagery and assuming that anything that we perceive
03:51as remotely culturally left-wing is bad
03:53or pretentious or out of touch or whatever the fuck.
03:56A lot of conservatives have been clamouring about there
03:59being one right way of doing things
04:01in-group slash out-group, and that anyone
04:03who does not ought to be mocked, ridiculed
04:05and berated. They accuse the other side
04:07of doing this. And some do.
04:09Although these people are just mentally
04:11unwell, they aren't bullies because they enjoy
04:13it. Yes, some certainly are.
04:16They are not well.
04:17The culturally conservative in your society
04:19openly enjoys bullying people.
04:21They accuse the cultural left of covertly bullying
04:23without claiming to bully. This is
04:25true to some extent. But the right
04:27openly advocate for it, always
04:29have, and now more so than ever because
04:31some idiots on the cultural left took their
04:33gloves off and now the cultural right are more ruthless
04:35in their bullying and belittling of others
04:37than ever before. So
04:39these social parasites who weren't truly left-wing
04:41single-handedly sabotaged the left-wing
04:43movement internationally. It was probably some co-intel
04:45pro-operation now that I think about it.
04:48And mainly speaking of what things
04:49are like in Australia. I can't speak for anywhere else
04:51in the world really.
04:53Anyway, Time of Maturing by
04:55Silas is a very strong film. I would
04:57recommend it. Not the happiest film ever
04:59made, although, I mean
05:02life isn't the happiest
05:03experience of all time, is it?
05:07Depending
05:07on where you are in the world, it can be magnificent.
05:09I live a great life objectively.
05:12Although, for many
05:13it is an experience
05:15of suffering in between sleep.
05:18To those
05:19of you, I wish I could wave a magic wand to make it
05:21better for you.
05:24In any case,
05:25have a great day, night, wherever you
05:27are, all of you.
05:29I hope all of you are suffering
05:30because you'll be elevated.
05:32And don't let those
05:34bastard cynics bring you down.
05:36Those who get
05:38pleasure out of the misery of others.
05:40Those people...
05:47Anyway, have a wonderful day, night, wherever you are,
05:50however you are.
06:06You
06:31Obrigado.
