Genndy Tartakovsky's 2014 CGI animation test for Sony Pictures Animation brought the classic Popeye character into 3D while retaining the exaggerated, rubbery physics of 1930s Fleischer Studios cartoons.

00:01Destiny.
00:02Something that has really shaped my animation career.
00:05From a young child, I was already destined to make one movie,
00:09and that movie was Popeye.
00:13Even so much that when I first started animation,
00:16my very first teacher was a 90-year-old Popeye animator
00:19from the Flusher Studios, Gordon Sheehan.
00:21So I feel like it's destiny that's brought me here
00:24to Sony Pictures Animation to make Popeye an animated feature.
00:28Hi, my name is Genndy Tartakovsky,
00:31and I'm the director of Popeye the Animated Feature.
00:34When I first immigrated from Russia to America,
00:37I watched a lot of television,
00:38and Popeye was one of those shows that not only did I learn
00:42some bad grammar and English from,
00:43but also that I fell in love with the animation art form.
00:46Boing! Grabs the jewel. Mwah!
00:49Because Popeye more so than anything else
00:51really embodies the physical humor,
00:53and the whole reason I do animation
00:56is to laugh at movement.
00:58It's the One Night Man!
00:59He has stolen the jewel!
01:02Boing!
01:03I remember when we finished Hotel Transylvania,
01:06and I was sitting in the movie theater watching kids and adults
01:09all laughing at the physical humor.
01:11I realized what better character to go into that world than Popeye.
01:16And so that brings us here now and to this.
01:19We've been working on Popeye for a little while now,
01:21and we wanted to really explore how Popeye would translate
01:24from the old 30s cartoons and 40s cartoons to today
01:27to contemporize them without losing the heart and sincerity
01:30of what Popeye really is,
01:31and what he meant to me as a kid and as an adult.
01:34So teaming up with Sony Pictures Imageworks,
01:37we developed this little piece of test animation
01:40that we wanted to share with you.
01:41And what it is, it's not a clip.
01:43It's not a trailer.
01:45It's nothing from the actual movie.
01:48The voices are all temp.
01:49It's just something that kind of represents what we want to do.
01:53I couldn't be more excited the way it turned out,
01:55and I hope you enjoy it.
02:16It's raining men!
02:18How peculiar.
02:34Get me out of here!
02:37Coming through.
02:38Don't worry, Miss Oil.
02:39I'll save you.
02:40Save me?
02:41Who's gonna save you?
02:43I'll be right with you.
02:44This is all just a treat.
02:46Ah, you're sorry.
02:47Just take it a little longer than I thought.
02:49Happy thoughts.
02:50Carry children.
03:13Popeye!
03:13Never told me.
03:15Oh!
