00:20A White House job that lasted just five days has sparked a bigger question for Donald Trump.
00:26Is the administration choosing its next press secretary for public appeal or for the experience needed to do the job?
00:34Now, Trump's former press secretary Sean Spicer is weighing in, with a warning for the president as the White House
00:41looks for Katie Zakaria's successor.
00:44Speaking to News24 anchor Andrew Bolt, Spicer cautioned Trump against focusing too heavily on the media-facing side of the
00:52role,
00:52including a candidate's ability to defend the president in front of the cameras.
00:57I caution the White House and the president in particular for just focusing on that part of the duties, Spicer
01:03said.
01:03The comments came after Bolt raised questions about whether Trump was prioritizing appearance and loyalty over professional competence when selecting
01:13people for key positions.
01:15Spicer defended Zakaria's intelligence and her support for Trump's America First agenda, but he stressed that being effective in front
01:23of television cameras is only one part of the job.
01:26And that is where his criticism becomes important.
01:30According to Spicer, the White House press secretary is not simply someone who answers questions from journalists or delivers prepared
01:37statements.
01:38The role also involves coordinating with government departments, managing announcements, working with outside stakeholders, and maintaining relationships with members of
01:48the press corps.
01:49You're talking about being the point person for the government of the United States through all the agencies and departments,
01:55Spicer explained.
01:56He estimated that the public-facing part of the position accounted for around 20 percent of the job, arguing that
02:04the administration must not overlook the less visible responsibilities behind the scenes.
02:10Spicer also said that people approaching him about the vacancy had prompted him to question whether they had enough government
02:17and media experience to take on such a demanding role.
02:21But why did Zakaria's tenure end so quickly?
02:24President Trump announced her appointment on October 9th, naming her as the successor to Caroline Levitt.
02:31Zakaria's first official day came the following week, and she held her first and only press briefing on Tuesday.
02:38According to the Associated Press, the briefing lasted approximately 14 minutes, with questions taken from just three reporters representing conservative
02:47-leaning or Trump-friendly outlets.
02:49Her halting remarks about Trump and his accomplishments drew criticism.
02:54Zakaria later said she had wanted to keep the briefing short so the president would have enough time for his
02:59own question-and-answer session.
03:01She also said she had not been fully briefed by White House staff beforehand.
03:05The controversy did not stop there.
03:09Questions were also raised about her professional credentials after reports highlighted that she had described herself as a lawyer while
03:16appearing as a conservative television commentator,
03:19despite not having passed a bar exam or otherwise being credentialed to practice law in the United States.
03:25Zakaria said she had worked as a lawyer in China and maintained that the term was appropriate in the context
03:31of her legal analysis.
03:33She said she was not acting as a lawyer or providing legal advice.
03:36Trump had also publicly suggested that she reconsidered the position before her departure.
03:43He said he had advised her that she might be better off being happy, adding that he did not believe
03:48she needed to endure the criticism she was facing.
03:51Trump described the media treatment as brutal.
03:53Now, Spicer's warning shifts the focus towards the next appointment.
03:59His argument is that a press secretary must understand how government operates, know how to deal with journalists, and be
04:06capable of coordinating across the administration.
04:09He also acknowledged that no candidate needs to excel in every category, but said a basic understanding of government and
04:16press relations is essential.
04:18For Trump, the challenge is finding someone who can communicate his administration's message while also managing the complex responsibilities that
04:27come with representing the White House.
04:29And after a five-day tenure that ended in controversy, the next appointment will face scrutiny before the first briefing
04:36even begins.
04:38The question now is whether the White House will prioritize camera-ready communication, government experience, or a combination of both.
