00:00In 2017, scientists aimed cosmic rays at the Great Pyramid of Giza and found a sealed 30-meter chamber hidden
00:07inside it.
00:08Nine years later, no human being has ever looked inside.
00:11The most studied building on planet Earth is still hiding a room the size of a passenger jet, and nobody
00:17on Earth is allowed to open it.
00:19This is the story of the discovery, the theories no one can prove, and why the Pyramid of Faro Khufu
00:25refuses to give up its last secret.
00:28Forty-five centuries ago, a king named Khufu ruled Egypt at the height of the Old Kingdom.
00:33When he died, around the year 2560 before Christ, his people raised him a tomb that would remain the tallest
00:41structure built by human hands for nearly 4,000 years.
00:44The Great Pyramid of Giza stands 146 meters tall, its base covering 13 acres, its core holding an estimated 2
00:53.3 million blocks of limestone, each weighing as much as a car.
00:57Its four sides are aligned to true north within 360th of a degree, a precision that still embarrasses modern surveyors.
01:05And yet in the year 2015, a team of physicists walked up to it with a radical idea.
01:11They would not dig.
01:12They would not drill.
01:14They would not move a single stone.
01:16They would photograph the inside of the pyramid using particles from outer space.
01:20To understand what the physicists found, you must understand what the pyramid was for.
01:26It was not merely a tomb.
01:28The Egyptians called it Akhet Khufu, the horizon of Khufu, and scholars have called the pyramids resurrection machines.
01:36In life, the pharaoh was the living god, Horus.
01:40In death, he became Osiris, lord of the dead.
01:43And his soul was expected to ascend into the sky, join the imperishable stars that never set, and board the
01:50solar bark of the sun, God Ra.
01:53The pyramid's very shape echoes the rays of the sun falling to earth, a staircase for the king's soul.
01:59So when modern science found an unexplained hollow space inside this machine for resurrection, the question was not just what
02:06it is, but what the builders of the afterlife intended it for.
02:10The tool the physicists brought was called muon tomography, and it sounds like science fiction.
02:17Every minute, about 10,000 muons, ghostly particles born when cosmic rays strike the upper atmosphere, rain down through every
02:26square meter of the earth.
02:27They pass through rock, through flesh, through everything, but dense, solid stone absorbs more of them than empty air.
02:35So if you place detectors beneath the pyramid and count the muons arriving from every direction, you can build a
02:42map of density inside the stone.
02:44Solid limestone lets fewer muons through.
02:47A hidden chamber lets more through, casting what physicists call a muon shadow.
02:53It is, in effect, an x-ray of the pyramid, drawn by the universe itself.
02:59In October of 2015, the ScanPyramid's mission, a collaboration between the French Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute and Cairo University,
03:07began scanning Khufu's pyramid with three separate teams of detectors, each using a different technology, so that no single instrument
03:15could be wrong.
03:16The three teams worked like rival witnesses to the same event.
03:20One team from Nagoya University placed photographic emulsion films inside the Queen's Chamber.
03:26A second team, from Japan's KEK Accelerator Laboratory, set up electronic scintillator detectors beside them.
03:34A third team, from France's Atomic Energy Commission, aimed gas-filled muon telescopes at the pyramid from outside its northern
03:42face.
03:42For months, the detectors soaked up muons in total silence.
03:47And in the data from all three teams, independently, the same signal appeared.
03:51A vast emptiness, sitting directly above the Grand Gallery, the towering, corbelled corridor that climbs toward the King's Chamber.
03:59The three teams' compared notes, ran the numbers again, and the signal refused to vanish.
04:05On the 2nd of November, 2017, the journal Nature published the paper,
04:10Discovery of a Big Void in Khufu's Pyramid by Observation of Cosmic Ray Muons by Morishima and colleagues.
04:17A void with a cross-section similar to the Grand Gallery itself,
04:22and a minimum length of 30 meters sitting above the gallery like a secret second corridor.
04:27The signal stood at 5.8 standard deviations, well beyond the threshold physicists demand, before declaring a discovery.
04:36The paper called it the first major inner structure found in the Great Pyramid since the 19th century.
04:42And then, in the driest sentence in the history of archaeology, the authors admitted they had no idea what it
04:48was for.
04:49The most advanced physics of the 21st century had found a 30-meter room inside the most famous building on
04:55Earth,
04:55and the official scientific position was a shrug.
04:59But the Scan Pyramid's mission had a second secret.
05:02The same muon scans had flagged another anomaly,
05:05behind the great chevron-shaped stones above the pyramid's original entrance on the north face.
05:12On the 2nd of March, 2023, the team published its characterization in the journal Nature Communications.
05:19A corridor, 9 meters long, and about 2 meters wide and tall,
05:23sealed behind the chevrons for four and a half millennia.
05:27And this time, the scientists got to peek inside.
05:30Through a natural joint between two limestone blocks, without drilling a single hole,
05:36they threaded a camera the width of a pencil, 6 millimeters across.
05:40And for the first time in modern history,
05:43human eyes saw into a new space inside the Great Pyramid.
05:46What they saw was emptiness, rough-cut, unfinished limestone walls,
05:51a saddle-vaulted ceiling, no gold, no mummy, no treasure.
05:56Just a dark, silent corridor, exactly as the builders left it.
06:01But it also raised the stakes because this corridor was not the big void.
06:05They are two separate discoveries.
06:07And the big one is still waiting.
06:10So what is the 30-meter void?
06:12The scientists themselves will not say, but the theories are irresistible,
06:17and every one of them is unproven.
06:19The most respected Egyptologist of Giza, Mark Lennar, favors the simplest answer,
06:25a construction gap, a space the builders deliberately left to distribute the crushing weight
06:31of millions of tons of stone because the ancient engineers, in his words,
06:35often over-engineered.
06:37A second theory says it is another grand gallery,
06:40a passage the builders used during construction, then sealed forever.
06:45A third whispers of an antechamber, guarding something deeper.
06:50A fourth suggests the trace of an internal ramp,
06:53the very machine by which the blocks were hauled skyward,
06:57fossilized inside the stone.
06:59And the scanned pyramids physicists themselves ruled one simple idea out.
07:04Their simulations showed the void sits about 10 meters too high
07:08to be relieving the weight of the grand gallery below.
07:11Here is the strangest detail of all.
07:13The muon data cannot even tell us whether the void runs level like a hallway
07:17or slopes like the grand gallery.
07:20Which raises the obvious question,
07:22why not just drill a tiny hole and look?
07:25The answer is written in the scars of the pyramid itself.
07:28In the year 820, the Abbasid Caliph al-Mamun,
07:32frustrated by the sealed entrance,
07:34ordered his men to smash their way in with fire and vinegar and chisels,
07:38carving the forced tunnel tourists still crawl through today.
07:42In the 19th century, European explorers blasted with gunpowder.
07:47Every intervention damaged the monument.
07:49Today, Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities holds a preservation-first position,
07:53and it has not authorized any direct intervention into the big void.
07:57The case for even a minimal procedure has not been made,
08:01because no one can prove that opening it would not harm what might be inside.
08:05So the void waits.
08:07The most famous tomb on Earth, built as a machine to launch a god-king into the stars,
08:12keeps one room that the priests, the caliphs, the explorers, and the physicists have all failed to enter.
08:18The story is not standing still.
08:20In 2025, researchers cross-confirmed the North Face Corridor with three more non-invasive tools,
08:27ground-penetrating radar, ultrasound, and electrical imaging, proving it is undeniably real.
08:33But 2026 also brought a warning about how hungry the world is for pyramid mysteries.
08:38In August of 2026, a sensational paper-claiming radar had found a vast hidden city beneath Giza
08:46was formally retracted for serious methodological flaws.
08:50The ScanPyramid's moon findings were untouched by that retraction,
08:54but the episode showed how easily rumor dresses itself as discovery.
08:58Meanwhile, the famed Egyptologist Zahi Hawass has announced that his own team found a separate 30-meter corridor
09:05ending at a sealed stone door.
09:08Though as of late 2026, no published data has appeared, and the claim remains unconfirmed.
09:14The frontier is moving, but the big void itself, nine years after its discovery,
09:20has never been entered, never been photographed from the inside, and never been explained.
09:26Step back and consider what this means.
09:29We have mapped the surface of Mars.
09:31We have photographed the shadow of a black hole 55 million light-years away.
09:36And yet, inside a building that has stood in the desert for 4,500 years,
09:41a building visited by millions and scanned by particle physicists,
09:45there is a space the length of a passenger jet that no living person has seen.
09:49The civilization that built it aligned 2.3 million blocks to within three-sixtieths of a degree of true north,
09:57carved granite with copper and stone, and designed a tomb as a machine for resurrection,
10:03a launch pad for the soul of a god-king.
10:06If they left a 30-meter void above the Grand Gallery, they left it on purpose.
10:10The question is not whether the void is real.
10:12The muons prove that.
10:15The question is what the most precise builders of the ancient world considered worth hiding
10:19inside the most sacred machine they ever built.
10:22The void is real.
10:24The treasure is a rumor.
10:26And somewhere above the Grand Gallery, a sealed space waits in the dark,
10:30exactly as it was when the last workman climbed out 45 centuries ago.
10:35Perhaps the next generation of machines, gentler than drills and sharper than moons,
10:40will finally open it without touching a stone.
10:43Until then, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the last surviving wonder of the ancient world,
10:49keeps it secret.
