01:51in the run-up to next year's presidential elections
01:54For the latest, we can head over now to Paris
01:56and bring in our correspondent, Estelle Nelson-Julien
01:58who's been covering the student protests since they began
02:01as well as all the violence over the weekend
02:03Good morning, Estelle, great to have you with us
02:05So after the chaos of the weekend
02:07what is the situation like this Tuesday morning?
02:12Well, good morning
02:13It's fair to say that the situation is much calmer
02:16on the ground this morning
02:18Curfews were in place across the country yesterday
02:21and in the immediate vicinity of the area
02:24I am standing in, in the centre of Paris
02:26close to the Place de la République
02:27In certain areas, such as in Nice
02:29in the south of France
02:30there was also a curfew strictly restricted
02:33to minors, to young people
02:35So it's fair to say that the things are calmer
02:39but there is still a raw sense on the ground
02:42as I walked here to where I'm standing
02:43I walked through shattered glass
02:45many shops were still boarded up
02:47So a lot of businesses are, of course
02:50still quite literally picking up the pieces
02:52And what's it been like for you
02:54covering these protests
02:55as a journalist on the ground
02:57just this weekend
02:58both you and your cameraman
02:59were assaulted and attacked?
03:03Yes, so it's been difficult
03:05and violent riots to cover
03:07over the course of the weekend
03:08So it was outside this supermarket
03:10just behind me
03:11a few steps away from the Place de la République
03:14where the major protests
03:16began on Saturday afternoon
03:18And as we filmed
03:20rioters who were attempting
03:21to loot this supermarket
03:23and smash it open with a hammer
03:24we were encircled by a group
03:27of teenagers, young adults
03:29many of them who were masked
03:30and who we could not recognise
03:32and they proceeded to
03:34try and rob our equipment
03:36They violently assaulted my cameraman
03:38who was very brave
03:39and thankfully was protected
03:40because he was wearing
03:42a facial protection
03:43including a gas mask
03:45and eye mask
03:45But it was a very tense incident
03:47and my cameraman was very brave
03:51And it's not an isolated incident
03:53We've seen many other journalists
03:55from a number of outlets
03:56reporting both intimidation
03:57and violence
04:01Yes, it's been
04:02over the course of the student movement
04:04I have faced a lot of angry students
04:06who've told me
04:07that they don't trust the media
04:08that they don't want journalists
04:10reporting on the protests
04:11that they believe the media
04:12hasn't been fair in its coverage
04:14and that it's only shown
04:15instances of violence
04:16rather than also talking
04:18about student demands
04:19And then in the case of the rioters
04:22it was a different
04:23whole new level of violence
04:25that we saw on the ground
04:26And I must also remind our viewers
04:28that there were calls on social media
04:30from the Yellow Vest movement
04:32to go outside and protest
04:34and cut off the so-called
04:35what they labelled as propaganda media
04:37And they called for protesters
04:39to stand outside
04:41various media outlets in Paris
04:43and demonstrate there
04:45So there were also many calls
04:47on social media
04:49calling for journalists
04:50to be held to account
04:52but in practice
04:52this led to violence on the ground
04:55Okay, Estelle News and Julianne
04:56they're reporting from Paris
04:57Thank you so much for your work
04:59Now, six years of hard work
05:01gone in one single night
05:03That's the reality for Odelia Sitbon
05:05a pharmacist near Paris'
05:06Place de l'École publique
05:07Last Saturday
05:08rioters smashed through her shop
05:10looting her stocks
05:11and setting it ablaze
05:13Left with empty shelves
05:14shattered glass
05:15and financial concerns
05:16about how to raise her three kids
05:18Odelia shared her story
05:19with Euronews' Valerie Torgia
05:23The scale of the damage is immense
05:25Everything is destroyed
05:26Everything
05:27I have no stock left
05:28They burned it all
05:29I don't even understand
05:30how someone could set on fire
05:32the building
05:33when they are homes above it
05:34Upstairs is my pharmacy storage area
05:36Even if they wanted to steal
05:38the stock was right there
05:39But instead
05:40they burned everything
05:41Are we really supposed to believe
05:43this is because the cost of living is so high?
05:46It's because looting is easy
05:48It's just because they can
05:50I've been working here for six years
05:52When I first started up the business
05:53I was seven months pregnant
05:55And I came back to work
05:56just two weeks after giving birth
05:58Two weeks!
05:59And for what?
06:00Because I wanted to provide the service
06:01But they didn't care at all
06:03They behaved like animals
06:04They ripped out my water heater
06:06They tore down my light fixtures
06:08Is this how you protest
06:10the high cost of living?
06:11By tearing down light fixtures?
06:13By smashing up a robot?
06:15Well, a pharmacy robot
06:16cost 150.000 bucks
06:18And in my opinion
06:19it's ruined
06:19I haven't even been able
06:21to check it properly yet
06:22because I can't turn the power back on
06:24They ripped out
06:25all of my electrical wiring
06:26which cost me 15.000 bucks
06:28to replace
06:28And the police
06:29no one protected us
06:30To see your life's work destroyed like this
06:32There's nothing worse
06:38And since all that looting and violence
06:40French retailers now face
06:42hundreds of millions of euros in damage
06:44From small boutiques
06:45to luxury shops
06:46on the high streets
06:46all types were targeted
06:48by theft and vandalism
06:49with the Galerie Lafayette group
06:50reporting significant consequences
06:52for the vast majority
06:53of their shops
06:54all across the country
06:55From the new view now
06:57from the ground
06:57we can bring in
06:58Patrick Molonese
06:59He's the vice president
07:00of the French Mayor's Association
07:01and also a member
07:02of the European Committee
07:04of the Regions
07:04Good morning sir
07:05Thank you so much
07:06for joining us
07:07Now we've seen those
07:08devastating pictures
07:08from the capital there
07:10but what's it like
07:11for smaller towns
07:12and of course
07:13Dijon the capital
07:14of your region
07:15Well it depends
07:17on some smaller towns
07:19I mean the real rural areas
07:20are quite calm actually
07:21It's mainly in major cities
07:24that the bad things happen
07:26because it's actually
07:28coordinated action
07:29from extremists
07:31that has nothing to do
07:32with normal protesters
07:33So let's say
07:34in the countryside
07:35things are pretty quiet
07:36But there's a real blame game
07:38going on now politically
07:39and we know it's a tense time
07:40in France
07:40with presidential elections
07:41coming up next year
07:43You're from the Radical Party
07:44of the left
07:45We've seen the Prime Minister
07:46blaming the so-called left
07:48for this violence
07:49How do you react to that?
07:51Well the Radical Left
07:52is a centre-left party
07:54I should say
07:54So the name doesn't tell it all
07:56So we're a centre-left party
07:58but that's not the question
07:59The question is
08:00there is a real difference
08:02between protesters
08:03who want just to say
08:06well what they complain about
08:08and that's completely legitimate
08:10but what happened
08:12the destruction
08:12the town hall attack
08:14and everything
08:14this is most probably
08:17the fact of extremists
08:18extreme right
08:19and extreme left
08:20and I personally believe
08:22and we will have evidence
08:23of that in a very short time
08:25I'm sure
08:26that there are also
08:27foreign interference
08:28in this matter
08:29Definitely on social media
08:31Russian interference
08:33is quite certain
08:35and maybe not only Russian
08:37and maybe also physically
08:40I mean some of the attacks
08:41were planned
08:43You don't come into the city
08:45and destroy, dismantle
08:48some physical equipment
08:51without training
08:52It's not the fact of just
08:53people getting angry
08:54That is not true
08:55That is not possible
08:56But these images
08:57of course of the violence
08:58the vandalism
08:59they've overshadowed
09:00the whole story here
09:01which began really
09:02with young people
09:03protesting over school conditions
09:05and struggling
09:06with their day-to-day issues
09:07What are the core structural problems
09:09facing France today
09:10and how can they be addressed?
09:12Well, there are problems
09:14all the time
09:15I mean we're all
09:16in an implementing situation
09:18I mean everyone wants
09:20to have a better life tomorrow
09:21One of the problems
09:22nowadays is that
09:23looking at the future
09:24on a bright way
09:26is getting harder and harder
09:27So some student
09:29protests about the system
09:30that classifies them
09:31to go to universities
09:32some complain about
09:34how their lycée
09:35their schools
09:36or their university
09:39are in good
09:40or not so good shape
09:42But overall
09:43it's a normal protest
09:45at the beginning
09:45But of course
09:46six months
09:48before the presidential election
09:50some people have interest
09:51to make things
09:52get harder and harder
09:54So from a normal
09:55and legitimate
09:56protestation
09:57we're getting to something
09:59that is completely different
10:00And again
10:00I insist
10:01and the committee
10:02of the region
10:03and the president
10:04gave her support
10:05to the French mayor
10:06and the French citizen
10:07But there is something
10:09at European level
10:09we have to see
10:10This does not happen
10:12without foreign interference
10:14That is certain
10:15Okay
10:15Patrick Molnos
10:16thank you so much
10:17for joining us
10:17This morning
10:18Now Beyond France
10:19people have also been
10:20taking to the streets
10:21of Spain
10:22Portugal and Italy
10:23to protest
10:24over the cost of living crisis
10:25and rising fuel prices
10:26Unions want lower prices
10:28higher pensions
10:29and more money
10:30in their pockets
10:31For the View from Industry Here
10:32I'm joined now
10:33by Michael O'Leary
10:34CEO of Europe's
10:35largest and most profitable
10:36airline group
10:37Ryanair
10:37Good morning
10:38Michael O'Leary
10:38Morning Mae
10:39Great pleasure to be here
10:40Lovely to have you
10:41Look when you see
10:41the wave of protests
10:43and industrial strikes
10:44all across Europe
10:45as the CEO
10:45of such a successful company
10:47do you relate to these concerns?
10:49I do
10:49I mean you know
10:50we live in Europe
10:53where you know
10:54we have fundamentally
10:55failed to be competitive
10:56you know
10:56the Draghi report
10:57is two years old
10:58it is sat on the shelf
10:59gathering dust
11:00Ursula von der Leyen
11:01talks about competitiveness
11:03and does absolutely
11:03nothing about it
11:05you look at our sector
11:06in air transport
11:06which has been one of the
11:07great successes of the
11:08European Union
11:09the deregulation
11:10liberalisation of air travel
11:11brought about the growth
11:12of low fare airlines
11:13like Ryanair
11:14you can now fly across
11:15the continent for 50 euros
11:16it is one of the very few
11:18industries where we
11:18outcompete the Americans
11:19they're ahead of us in AI
11:21they're ahead of us in IT
11:22when it comes to air travel
11:23we're much cheaper in Europe
11:25than they are in the US
11:26and yet what are we doing?
11:27we're raising environmental
11:28taxes on air travel
11:30which results in higher fares
11:31you have that ship of fools
11:33in the European Parliament
11:34redesigning more regulations
11:36designed to increase
11:37the cost of air travel
11:38when consumers want
11:39lower fares
11:40we keep growing every year
11:42because consumers want
11:43what we deliver
11:43which is really low fare
11:44affordable air travel
11:45and yet our politicians
11:47and our regulators
11:48here in Europe
11:49add complexity
11:50add regulation
11:51and add cost
11:52to consumers' lives
11:53and this wave of protests
11:54as you can see
11:55consumers are feeling
11:56the pinch
11:57they want more money
11:58in their pocket
11:58is this really just a taste
11:59of what is to come
12:00because as you say
12:01we're not very competitive
12:02here in Europe
12:03we're an ageing continent
12:05that doesn't mean
12:06we can't be more competitive
12:07yet
12:07you have the AI
12:08bringing about
12:09huge
12:11large growth
12:12in efficiency
12:12we can be more competitive
12:14I mean I'm here
12:15in Brussels today
12:16you know unfortunately
12:16I'm announcing
12:17Reiner's winter schedule
12:18this winter we're cutting
12:20a million seats
12:20out of Belgium
12:21we're reducing our
12:23capacity in
12:24Zaventum
12:24in Charleba
12:25we're going to reduce
12:26by 20 routes
12:26this winter
12:27why?
12:27because the Deweyver government
12:30has increased air travel
12:31from 2 euros per ticket
12:32to 7 euros per ticket
12:33and as the Belgians
12:35increase
12:35air taxes
12:36on air travel
12:37the Slovakians
12:39the Swedes
12:39the Italians
12:40the Hungarians
12:41have abolished air travel
12:42we're moving aircraft
12:43to those countries
12:44who are competitive
12:45Belgium is not competitive
12:47France is not competitive
12:48Germany is hopelessly
12:49uncompetitive
12:50and yet the way forward
12:51is to reduce
12:52the tax burden
12:53on our citizens
12:54and do that
12:55by driving down
12:56the tax on air travel
12:57So what's your message
12:57to France and Belgium?
12:58Get more efficient
12:59stop raising taxes
13:01consumers around Europe
13:02citizens around Europe
13:03want lower taxes
13:04particularly on things
13:04like air travel
13:05so they can travel
13:06affordably
13:07meet friends and family
13:08across Europe
13:10and we have a scandal
13:11in Europe
13:12we tax
13:12we apply environmental taxes
13:14only to intra-EU flights
13:16we don't tax the Americans
13:17we don't tax the Asians
13:18we don't tax the Chinese
13:19they can
13:20despite the fact
13:21that their flights
13:21account for more than
13:2253% of Europe's
13:24CO2 emissions
13:24we exempt them
13:25you know
13:26nobody would design
13:27a stupid system
13:28like this
13:29other than
13:29the European Parliament
13:30and Ursula von der Leyen
13:31if you're serious
13:32about competitiveness
13:32tax the Americans
13:34when they land here
13:34in Europe
13:35we should have
13:35a fair and reasonable
13:36environmental tax
13:37on all flights
13:38but they're afraid
13:39to go there right
13:39they don't want to go there
13:40of course they're afraid
13:40to go there
13:41Ursula von der Leyen
13:42is afraid to do anything
13:43except talk
13:44you know
13:45she's useless
13:46we have
13:47Europe has a road map
13:48for being more competitive
13:49it's called the Draghi report
13:51two years later
13:52not one of its
13:53recommendations
13:53has been implemented
13:54and Ursula von der Leyen
13:55hides in the Berlin Mall
13:57doing nothing
13:57except giving speeches
13:58if the Draghi report
13:59was implemented
14:00how could Europe look
14:01we would be a dramatically
14:02more efficient
14:04society
14:04I mean if you look
14:06at air travel
14:06they said look
14:07we should reduce
14:08the environmental tax
14:09burden on air travel
14:10which is absolutely sensible
14:11and we should reform
14:12ATC in Europe
14:14ATC
14:15in Europe
14:16accounts for more than
14:1790% of flight delays
14:18and yet the airlines
14:20have to provide
14:20compensation
14:21and right to care
14:22expenses for passengers
14:23because of those delays
14:24but we're not allowed
14:25to recover those costs
14:26from the people
14:27who cause over 90%
14:28of the delays
14:28which is air traffic control
14:29why has there been
14:30no reform of air traffic control
14:32for 20 years in Europe
14:33because we have
14:34useless politicians
14:35like von der Leyen
14:36talking about being competitive
14:38but doing nothing about it
14:39and meanwhile
14:40the reality for consumers
14:41for those who like
14:42to catch a plane
14:43airfares are going up
14:44and they'll keep going up
14:45they won't necessarily keep
14:47they're going to go
14:48significantly up
14:49in the next 12 months
14:49for two reasons
14:50one
14:50because of the higher
14:51cost of fuel
14:52we're hedged in Reiner
14:53this year
14:54at about $67 a barrel
14:55next year
14:55our oil price will double
14:57and the second reason
14:58airfares are going up
14:59is because of increases
15:00in ETS
15:01environmental taxation
15:02on only intra-European flights
15:04while we exempt
15:05all the American flights
15:06the Asian flights
15:07but that's a reality
15:08you can't just ignore either
15:09of course it's not a reality
15:10the reality is
15:11if you want to fly to Europe
15:12if you want to land
15:13and take off in Europe
15:14the Americans
15:14the Asians
15:15the Chinese
15:15should pay their fair share
15:17we shouldn't be exempting them
15:19who create the greatest
15:20amount of emissions
15:21while we only tax
15:22the poor dumb European citizens
15:24travelling around
15:25visiting friends and family
15:26and are you planning
15:27a surcharge for the fuel?
15:28no no
15:29we will
15:29down Reiner
15:30we guarantee no fuel surcharges
15:31but there is no doubt
15:32that airfares are going to rise
15:33significantly in 2027
15:35because of much higher oil prices
15:37ok
15:37Michael O'Leary
15:38CEO of Reiner
15:39thank you so much
15:39thank you mate
15:40great to be here
15:40on Euronews
15:41now moving on
15:42to Ukraine
15:43where two children
15:44were among the victims
15:45of a Russian drone strike
15:47on a park in the Kharkiv region
15:48yesterday
15:49it comes as
15:50Vladimir Putin
15:51has reportedly
15:52proposed
15:53a three-way summit
15:54with Donald Trump
15:55and China's Xi Jinping
15:56next month
15:57to discuss ending
15:58the war in Ukraine
15:59potentially
16:00without Kiev
16:01at the table
16:02for more on what exactly
16:03is behind this announcement
16:05I'm joined this morning
16:05by our Ukraine correspondent
16:07Sasha Vakilina
16:08good morning
16:08so what do we know
16:09about this proposed summit
16:11and how has Ukraine
16:12been responding?
16:12well the Kremlin confirmed
16:14that Putin would like
16:14to have this trilateral summit
16:16with Donald Trump
16:18and China's President Xi
16:19but there's been no reaction
16:21yet from Washington
16:21except the fact that
16:22of course the United States
16:23and the Trump administration
16:24has been putting more pressure
16:25on Ukraine
16:26and on Kyiv
16:26over the past week or so
16:28regarding making concessions
16:30and it also concerns
16:31the possible
16:32and reported limitations
16:33when it comes to
16:34the deliveries
16:34of Patriot
16:36ballistic missiles
16:37interceptors
16:38that Ukraine
16:38really really needs
16:39with Russia launching
16:40at times
16:4039 ballistic missiles
16:43at Kyiv
16:43just overnight
16:44and also
16:45with the reported
16:46cuts regarding
16:47the Starlink connection
16:49now Ukraine's
16:50foreign minister
16:50Andrei Sebiha
16:51was very careful
16:52speaking about
16:52this possible
16:53trilateral summit
16:54when he said
16:54a trilateral meeting
16:55between the leaders
16:56of Ukraine
16:57the US and Russia
16:58could help end
16:59the war sooner
16:59a trilateral meeting
17:00between the leaders
17:01of Russia
17:02China and the US
17:03would do only
17:03the opposite
17:04encourage Putin
17:05to continue
17:05this war
17:06And meanwhile
17:07of course
17:07Sasha
17:07we've seen
17:08President Trump
17:08defending his
17:09approach to Moscow
17:10arguing that Russia
17:11is doing very little
17:12to help Iran
17:13but what exactly
17:14is Moscow saying?
17:15Well Moscow
17:15did speak as well
17:17just hours in fact
17:18after Donald Trump's
17:19statement about the fact
17:20that Russia
17:20is not helping Iran
17:22Russia's foreign
17:23minister Sergei Lavrov
17:24said that Russia
17:25is supporting Iran
17:26in fact he actually
17:27compared Russia's
17:29war against Ukraine
17:30with Iran's fight
17:31saying both have
17:33quote just cause
17:35and Lavrov also said
17:36that Russia intends
17:37to continue its support
17:38to Iran
17:40despite the fact
17:40that Donald Trump
17:41said no
17:41and that Russia
17:42is actually helping
17:43to normalise
17:44and to balance
17:45the diesel world market
17:47Moscow says
17:47it's going to help
17:48Iran more
17:49Okay Sasha
