00:00There's only two types of people in the world
00:03The ones that entertain and the ones that serve
00:07Welcome to Miss Mojo, and today we're looking at iconic vocalists
00:12who unfortunately may never record another line again in their lives
00:15I don't really feel like I belong to any sect
00:19I don't feel like I belong to the young rap crew
00:22I don't
00:24Gautier
00:32Sometimes all you need is a taste of fame to realize it isn't for you
00:36Gautier seems to have learned this for himself
00:39following the popularity of 2011's Somebody That I Used To Know
00:43Fans eagerly awaited his next work, not realizing it would never come
00:55He pulled away from the spotlight following its immense success
00:59after reportedly feeling overwhelmed with the pressures of sudden widespread admiration
01:04As a result, he seemingly abandoned his solo work
01:08and focused on projects where he isn't in the limelight
01:20Although he's stated in the past that he intends to make a new album
01:23As the years go by, it seems less and less likely that it'll ever happen
01:28Now he's just somebody that we used to know
01:46She may not have had the longest career, but her loss is still felt today
01:50After rising to prominence in the late 1960s with her classic, Ode to Billy Joe
01:56Bobby Gentry went on to rule the stage and screen
01:59She released seven studio albums in a five-year span
02:03and even won three Grammy Awards
02:05Beyond the studio, she found success performing in Las Vegas
02:08Here's your one chance, man, so don't let me down
02:13Lord, forgive me for what I do, dear
02:15But if you want out, well, it's like me now
02:18Get up now, girl, you better start moving uptown
02:20Just over a decade into her entertainment career
02:24Gentry began to lose interest in the craft
02:26She stopped releasing music following 1978's Steal Away
02:30and made her last public appearance in 1982
02:33Since then, she hasn't given another interview or recorded another track
02:38Over 40 years later, her mind hasn't changed
02:42And at this point, she likely never will
02:45When I'm alone with all we dreams of you
02:55Nami-e Amuro
03:05From her days as a girl group teen idol
03:08to her successful solo career as an adult
03:11She delighted listeners of all ages for decades
03:14Nami-e Amuro was extremely popular
03:17with several hits to her name
03:19Despite being at the top, in 2017, she announced her retirement
03:24She finished with a bang, securing one final hit album
03:27and going on a series of goodbye tours
03:43She officially bowed out in September of 2018
03:46Having become the only artist in her country
03:49to sell a million albums in her teens, 20s, 30s, and 40s
03:54She hasn't come back since
03:55And with all the proof of her career being wiped from the internet in 2023
03:59Fans are worried they'll never be able to stream her work again
04:11These artists may have stopped working
04:13But you know what never will?

04:27Janice Ian
04:36Some musicians quit because they grew tired of fame
04:39Others only leave because they had to
04:41Janice Ian falls firmly into the second camp
04:44With her career spanning over 50 years before her retirement in 2022
04:49Although her relationship with music hadn't changed
04:52Her health unfortunately had
04:54You mentioned the virus that you suffered and losing your voice
05:00In regards to that, I suppose
05:02How did you come to terms with losing something that was so personal
05:07And so important to you and your career?
05:10So, um, I haven't
05:12The farewell tour accompanying her final album
05:15The Light at the End of the Line
05:17Was cancelled following the revelation that a nasty bout of laryngitis
05:21Had scarred her vocal cords so badly
05:23That her voice was irreparably damaged
05:26With that news, it became clear she would likely never record new work again
05:31She's referred to this era as rewiring rather than retiring
05:34A mindset that slightly lessens the blow of the loss of her artistry
05:39I mean, we're sold out, you know
05:40And that's amazing to me that I could come back to Ireland
05:43Not able to sing and people would come to hear the songs
05:47That's really amazing as a songwriter
05:49Yeah
05:49But I don't think you ever come to terms with something like
05:51Well, maybe you come to terms but you don't accept it
05:54I'm not sure
05:56Huey Lewis
06:04Unfortunately, Janice Ian isn't the only iconic musician
06:08To have been affected by a career-ending diagnosis
06:11After having delighted listeners for decades
06:14As the lead singer of Huey Lewis and the News
06:16It seemed as though the eponymous frontman would never retire
06:20Unfortunately, that wasn't the case
06:2335 years ago, I had an intense vertigo bout before a gig
06:28And I had to go to the hospital, cancel the gig
06:31And then I was fine after I went to sleep
06:34And I woke up and I was okay
06:35Then five years later, I had another big vertigo bout
06:38And then five years after that, I lost my right ear
06:42In 2018, he revealed that Meniere's disease
06:45Had impacted his ability to hear
06:47Which led him canceling that year's tour dates
06:50By 2025, it had advanced to the point of total deafness
06:54With my hearing aids, I can actually hear speech
06:57And I'm fine
06:58But it's episodic
07:00I'll go like this for two or three weeks
07:02And then I'll have a week of almost complete deafness
07:06Although a cochlear implant helps
07:08Making new material is out of the question
07:10He even commented in 2026 that music was no longer part of his life
07:16Now all we have left to remind us of his powerful voice
07:19Is his catalogue of classic hits
07:21But if I just save your life
07:25That's the power of love
07:28Linda Ronstadt
07:30If I could only see
07:33That familiar sunrise
07:37With her gorgeous vocals
07:39She quickly became one of the biggest stars of the late 20th century
07:43Linda Ronstadt's voice was so widely beloved
07:46That she was named one of the most prominent female stars of the 1970s
07:51Unfortunately, it wouldn't last
07:53By the 2000s, her voice weakened
07:56As a result, she released her final studio work in 2006
08:00In 2011, she announced her retirement
08:03Along with another piece of devastating news
08:06That she lost the ability to sing
08:08You know, I would sing in the car
08:10And I would sing walking down the street
08:11And I was singing in the shower
08:13And I did a lot of internal singing
08:15Like little tiny singing
08:16That you wouldn't even be able to hear
08:17But I would be
08:17And I don't even do that anymore
08:20Because I just don't have those colors
08:21I don't have any colors in my paint box
08:23It was later discovered
08:24That she suffered from progressive supranuclear palsy
08:27Which caused motor control loss in her vocal cords
08:30It was a deeply unfair way to lose such a talent
08:34And cut her career short
08:35Before she could introduce herself to a new generation of listeners
08:38And I think it's gonna hurt me
08:44For a long, long time
08:51Andre 3000
08:52He may not have technically retired
08:54But it's unlikely he'll ever lay down another line
08:58Who on son don't come unprepared
08:59I'll leave there
09:00But when I leave there
09:01Better be a household name
09:02Brother man telling us it ain't gonna rain
09:03Throughout the 1990s and 2000s
09:06Andre 3000 achieved fame
09:08As one half of the rap group Outkast
09:11When they went on hiatus
09:12He began a solo career
09:13And appeared as a featured performer
09:15On other artists' songs
09:24The official shift came in 2018
09:26When he released a 17-minute instrumental track
09:30The change became permanent in 2023
09:32Following the release of New Blue Sun
09:35Which featured no vocals
09:37He later explained that he felt too old to rap
09:40Without coming across as inauthentic
09:42While we would listen to him spit bars at any stage of life
09:46It's clear that he's more than ready to leave that era of his artistry behind
09:50I'm at a point now
09:51Like if somebody in the street
09:52Were to ask me
09:54Like
09:55Man, could you rap?
09:56Like, could you say something?
09:57It'd feel weird
09:58Like, I have to get my mind
10:00Like, you have to get in rap mind
10:02Or rap mode
10:03But then people ask me
10:04Hey, can you play?
10:04I'm like, yeah, let's go
10:05Yeah, let's play
10:06Let's go
10:06Neil Diamond
10:07Well, I'm New York City
10:09Born and raised
10:10But nowadays I'm lost between two shores
10:14An all-time great choosing to step back from the industry
10:18Is a loss felt by listeners all over the world
10:21Fans of Neil Diamond went through something similar in 2018
10:25When the legendary singer announced that he was retiring from touring and performing
10:29Is this when you turn and say
10:31It's all over
10:34God bless
10:35What an experience
10:36Considering he'd been releasing music since the late 1960s
10:40The news was shocking
10:42Diamond went on to reveal that he'd been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease
10:46Which forced him to cancel his 50th anniversary tour
10:49While he claimed it wouldn't stop him from adding to his catalog
10:53His last album from 2026 consisted entirely of songs he'd recorded in 2007 and never released
11:00With that in mind, it's unfortunately evident that new art won't be coming anytime soon
11:06If at all
11:07Good times never seemed so good
11:14I've been inclined
11:18To believe they never won
11:23Britney Spears
11:32At the turn of the 21st century, she was one of the biggest reformers in the world
11:37And for a good reason
11:39What listeners weren't aware of was that for over a decade, Britney Spears was trapped in a conservatorship by her
11:45father
11:46That forced her to continue working against her will
11:49They have the power to access her medical records and communicate with her doctors
11:52They can take control of her house and even cancel her credit cards
11:56They can make recording, touring, and TV deals for her
11:59And are deeply involved in her finances
12:02By the time she was freed in 2021, it was understandable that she wanted to take a well-deserved break
12:08Since then, she's only appeared as a featured artist despite other stars writing new material for her
12:21In 2026, she proclaimed that she was never returning to the industry
12:25While she teased some material that she recorded prior to her announcement
12:30Fans aren't sure if it'll ever see the light of day
12:46Before we continue, check out this single from Sound Mojo's Aria
12:50Songs from Iran
12:51Reimagining Persian melodies as modern rock, metal, and pop songs
12:55Check out the full track and album below
12:58Come to me and save me from this wretched place
13:04Come to me and hide me in your sacred space
13:09Seal me with your grace
13:11Julie Andrews
13:13When you know the notes to sing
13:20You can sing most anything
13:26Her work has given multiple generations the chance to hear her iconic voice
13:31And now, past recordings are the only way they can hear it
13:35Julie Andrews carried the soundtrack to several productions
13:38From Mary Poppins to Camelot
13:40All it took was one medical mishap to rip all of that away
13:44It's just over 19 months ago
13:46I went in for a routine procedure that I was told would not be threatening to my vocal cords
13:52And since then, as you know and as everybody's been talking about
13:57I've just been unable to sing
13:59In 1997, she underwent a routine operation to remove non-cancerous nodules that caused hoarseness
14:06She had no clue that it would result in irreparable damage
14:10The provider claimed her availability would return
14:13But it never did
14:15Andrews' livelihood as a singer was ripped away from her
14:18Forcing her to pivot decades into her career
14:21While she seems to have come to terms with it
14:24It's one of the most unfair forced retirements in music history
14:27You know, the amazing thing is
14:30I guess, glass half full
14:32The things that came out of that
14:33I wouldn't have been writing as much
14:35That's true
14:36And my daughter said
14:38Mom, you've just found a new way of using your voice
14:41Which retired singer do you miss the most?
