A man digging in a cornfield in Kentucky made the discovery of a lifetime when he unearthed over 700 rare Civil War era gold and silver coins. Now known as the Great Kentucky Hoard, this astonishing collection had been buried in the ground for more than 150 years.

The cache includes exceptionally rare 1863 Double Eagles and numerous gold dollars dating between 1840 and 1863. Historians believe a wealthy Confederate sympathizer likely buried the fortune to protect it from advancing Union troops or opportunistic marauders during John Hunt Morgan's 1863 raid.

Certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company, individual coins from the hoard have fetched tens of thousands of dollars at auction, pushing the total estimated value of the find into millions of dollars. The landowner decided to remain anonymous, but the sensational discovery quickly captured national headlines.
