00:00Hello everybody, Ellie here for Who Culture. Welcome to my sauna. This is the hottest room
00:06ever. It's getting a bit much now, isn't it? Woo! It's warm. The show must go on, as it were,
00:11and today I want to basically look at the timeline of the Christmas special from its announcement
00:18to the announcement of its cancellation, and maybe just draw some conclusions about what
00:22happened along the way for it to have been announced and then to have been cancelled.
00:26So let's look at some dates and some information, shall we? So all the way back in October
00:322025, which feels like an age ago, really wasn't actually that long ago, they announced that
00:38they were going to be releasing a Christmas special in 2026. They also announced that Disney
00:43were no longer partnered with the BBC to make Doctor Who, and that the Christmas special
00:49would be a BBC-only production. That really does feel like such a long time ago, doesn't
00:53it? So much has happened, and yet we've had very little information at the same time
00:58in that small space of time.
01:00So then in November 2025, we get our first update from Russell T. Davis when he was asked
01:06about the Christmas special and whether he'd started writing it yet, and this is what he
01:11said, quote,
01:12Not at the moment, because I'm busy on the war between the land and the sea. I'm also
01:16shooting a show in Manchester, so next year my plate clears and we'll get to work on that.
01:21But I know exactly what happens in the special, don't worry about that.
01:25This is the thing as well, because obviously the announcement came in October, but then
01:29from November through to December we had all the build up for the war between the land
01:33and the sea, so there was something occupying us, or only us in the UK. I'm sorry guys,
01:38there's still no update. Honestly, at this point, I would just take it as the war between
01:43the land and the sea is not going to be released on Disney+. I just don't see it happening.
01:47In the UK at least, there was a lot of build up and hype for the war between the land
01:51and
01:51the sea, so although there was this Christmas special coming, it wasn't necessarily the
01:55focus of anyone at that point in time. And even Russell T. Davis is saying, it's not
02:00my primary focus at the moment, let's focus on the war between the land and the sea.
02:03Obviously he was shooting other shows tiptoe at the time, so. But even here he still
02:08seems confident and, um, like he knows exactly what his plan is going to be when he does
02:14eventually write it.
02:15Then in December 2025, we get another tease from Russell T. Davis about the Christmas
02:20special in Doctor Who magazine, saying, quote,
02:23Next December, I'll be here to trumpet and toot about the 2026 Christmas special. It contains
02:28these three words, bafflers, winter knocks, and village.
02:33This is where it gets a little bit confusing and where I think very specific choices in
02:39wording have been used in these recent announcements. Because you can't have known three specific
02:46words that were going to be in the episode if you hadn't at least made some drafts, made
02:52some notes, written some things down in some form of script to know what three specific
02:59words are going to be. I mean, that feels like overwhelming evidence that there were plans
03:04to make this Christmas special, that there were written documents somewhere with ideas
03:09on them. So yes, there may not have been a full final script written, and I think they're
03:14being very specific in their wording, but clearly there were plans being made and words in his mind
03:20to be writing for this special. Either that or this was a big fat line, he just pulled three
03:27random words out of thin air to continue teasing a special that no one actually planned to make.
03:32Also in December 2025, Russell T. Davis did hype up the plot in an interview with BBC Newsbeat,
03:38and he said this, quote,
03:40We haven't even started work on it yet, says Davis. I know what happens, but I better write
03:45it down soon in case I get run over by a bus. Davis tells Newsbeat he shared his plans with
03:49BBC
03:50bosses, leaving them with Jaws agape loving it. So as we kind of knew at the time, based
03:57on these specific interviews, as of December 2025, they hadn't started working on it yet.
04:03And we were all kind of under the impression, based on what Russell T. Davis was saying here,
04:07is that he's got plans, he's pitched ideas, everyone's on board, everyone's loving the ideas
04:12he's got, but it won't be until after the press and all of the things for the war between the
04:16land and the sea, that they'll actually get started on it. And we were kind of all under the
04:20impression at this point that come March, they'd kind of at least be in pre-production and they'd be
04:26in full swing getting this Christmas special made. And everything they're saying here seems to
04:31support that idea. So it is very concerning or confusing when you get to this point and they're
04:37saying, ah, there was not really any plans, there was no one to play the Doctor, there was
04:40no scripts written. And it's like, what were you doing in all this time? It also just makes me
04:46laugh so much, because obviously there's a little bit of uncertainty about whether things ended
04:51amicably between Russell T. Davis and the powers that be. And was he fired? I don't think he was
04:57fired. But there is questions about whether it was ended on necessarily the best of terms. But it
05:03always makes me laugh when Russell T. Davis is talking about anything he's ever written, because
05:06everything he's ever written in his mind is the best thing ever. And he's like, Jaws were a gape,
05:10everyone was loving it. And things that have unfolded since, rumours that have floated around
05:14since, maybe suggest that that wasn't the case? So from that point, in December, Russell
05:21T. Davis then seemed to go quite quiet with regards to the Christmas special. What we
05:25did hear though, in February 2026, was confirmation that the special was still coming from the BBC
05:32Studios exec, Zy Bennett. Quote, we're a big important part of Doctor Who and are all motivated
05:38to make sure Doctor Who has a long and flourishing life. We've got the Christmas special coming.
05:43After that, it's time for us all to work on it. These are things, again, we were talking
05:47about. There seemed to be a lot of confidence and commitment from the BBC, as well as people
05:53like Russell T. Davis, for Doctor Who as a whole, for the Christmas special. This is February
05:582026, and the BBC are still under the impression, or still at least giving us the illusion, or telling
06:03us that there will be a Christmas special coming in 2026. So that's February. Also in February
06:092026, we had the interview with Murray Gold, where he revealed that Russell T. Davis had
06:14written multiple versions of the special depending on different outcomes. This is exactly what
06:19he said. Quote, I know that Russell's written, I think, multiple versions depending on certain
06:23outcomes. So that's all I really know, and I'm not sure I'm even supposed to know that.
06:27But that, to me, says a lot. First and foremost, that's two people in February alone, who aren't
06:34Russell T. Davis, who are saying that the Christmas special is coming and are publicly discussing
06:39it. Either everyone seemed to be all in on a lie, or, up until as recently as February,
06:45it was still going ahead. Then, April 2026, Russell T. Davis pops back up again, again in Doctor
06:52Who magazine, talking about the Christmas special, saying, quote,
06:55Wouldn't it be great if we got to this year's Doctor Who Christmas special and nothing had been
06:59spoiled and everything was new? That's April. That's very, very close to when the announcement
07:05came. I mean, the announcement came, what, the second week, third week of June? That's a very
07:10short period of time to have gone from, let's hope we can get to the Christmas special without
07:15any spoilers, suggesting the Christmas special is still happening, to, nope, the Christmas special
07:19isn't happening, I never even wrote it. The thing is, it seems a very odd thing to say,
07:23if, at that point, he knew that it wasn't happening. I mean, to me, I feel like the best
07:29course of action there would have been to just say nothing about it at all. So that leads me to
07:33believe that as of recently as April, there were still plans for it to happen, it was still going
07:39ahead as recently as April. Because it just seems odd to me for Russell T. Davis to be talking about
07:45the Christmas special in this positive way, well, kind of positive way, obviously negative in the
07:49terms of spoilers. He's still talking about it as if it's very much happening, and let's hope that
07:55we can do this amazing thing and not spoil it by the time it comes round. Why say that if
08:00you know
08:01it's cancelled? Just say nothing if it's cancelled. Teasing us and stringing us along like that if you
08:06know it's not happening just seems like a really nasty thing to do. Were they just doing that and
08:12stringing us along and giving us false hope? Or was the plan for it to still be happening
08:17in April, in which case what the hell happened in the space of three months?
08:21So then that of course does bring us to June 2026, when they announced that the Christmas
08:26special is cancelled and will not be happening, and obviously the show itself is going to be put
08:31out to tender earlier. So then the question is, after looking at all of that, what the hell happened?
08:37There is no way they would have made that announcement if they didn't initially plan to make it. That
08:42just seems stupid to make an announcement with absolutely no intention of following through. So that
08:47suggests to me there was initially a plan to make a Christmas special, without a doubt. So it
08:52definitely makes sense that they wanted the Christmas special to tie up loose ends, to make
08:55the transition into the new era much smoother, and obviously to keep the brand alive and keep
09:02audiences interested in their show. So I think there definitely was a plan to do that, but clearly
09:07something changed. And we have multiple possibilities for what might have happened to cause those changes.
09:13So the first one is the changes in leadership at the BBC. So March 2026, Matt Britton, who is a
09:20self-proclaimed Whovian, he's on record saying that, he is named the new BBC Director General. On the 18th
09:27of May 2026, he officially started his new role at the BBC. And what's interesting about that is that
09:33March to May period, from when he was announced and when he actually started the job, that actually
09:40lines up with when Russell T. Davis actually started to be quite quiet and hush-hush about
09:45the special. So that could have been when things changed. It does seem a little bit strange that he
09:50was very vocal about the Christmas special, and then in that time where changes were happening at
09:54the BBC, Russell T. Davis seemed to say absolutely nothing about the Christmas special. Maybe that's
09:59when the uncertainty started to happen, with changes in leadership, changes in vision, perhaps for the
10:04future of the BBC as a whole, and what that meant for Doctor Who as a whole as well. Now,
10:09this
10:09leadership change possibility, this idea, is then backed up by Richard Osman on the Rester's
10:15Entertainment podcast. He said, quote, Charlotte Moore, who was the chief content officer of the BBC,
10:22was leaving and Kate Phillips was coming in. There was a lot of churn at this point. As soon as
10:27Kate
10:27Phillips got her feet under the table, she said, we're going to put it out to tender now,
10:31because the whole point of putting it out to tender is, this is a big deal for us. It's the
10:36opposite of saying we're going to rest it. It's the opposite of saying we're putting it out to
10:41pasture. We want to give it multiple series. We now need to find production companies to pitch to us
10:46to say they want to make Doctor Who. With the changes in leadership at the BBC, there was a change
10:53in focus on what they wanted to do with Doctor Who, and perhaps a desire to move forward quicker
10:57with getting Doctor Who back on its feet. So they wanted to focus more and press onwards more with
11:03the show's future and multiple series and the longevity of the show, rather than dwelling on
11:09one Christmas special that may or may not perform well based on the previous two series of the show.
11:16So that makes a lot of sense from a business perspective, from a fan perspective, from the
11:21perspective of the BBC looking for the longevity of a franchise as opposed to just one Christmas
11:25special to kind of save face. The other possibility just in general for why the cancellation happened
11:31is that the special itself was the issue. It is possible, I'm not sure, but it is possible that
11:36nobody was happy with the story, that perhaps the BBC weren't convinced by what Russell T. Davis was
11:42pitching to them, and again you have to consider the response to what came before and then they must
11:49consider that and then look at the Christmas special and go, is this going to be worthwhile for us?
11:55Is this going to do good for us or harm us as a company? The other thing to consider if
12:00we take
12:01what Murray Gold said, if there are multiple versions and lots of different scripts going on
12:05and different pitches going on, that does seem a bit haphazard. It seems a bit rushed, a little bit
12:09messy. It seems like nobody really has a clear idea of what it is they want to do. So it's
12:14kind of
12:15maybe the idea that it's better not to do something that could damage the show further and cause
12:20irreparable damage. You know, we're already on thin ice as it is in terms of viewership, in terms of
12:25the response to current Doctor Who. So if they're getting pitches that have multiple versions, they've
12:30got no clear decisions made, it all seems a bit rushed and no one's really clear on what it is
12:35they
12:35actually want to be making, it's quite possible that the BBC went, this is a risk and it's a risk
12:40we're not willing to take. You haven't come to us with a clear idea, you've come to us with six
12:45different ideas and we don't know which one of those is the one you're going to be making because
12:50you haven't got all of your ducks in order. That's definitely not the phrase, but it is now.
12:56And again we can go to Richard Osman for further commentary on this being the situation. He said
13:01quote, as soon as you say you're putting it out to tender, you can't make the Christmas special
13:05because the canon of the show will be affected so much by what they were about to do with the
13:10regeneration of Shooty Gatwork to Billy Piper. You can't lay that on companies who are working on
13:14where they'll take the Doctor Who universe. If you're about to drop an enormous Christmas shaped
13:18bomb in the middle of that, it makes that process impossible for everyone. Basically what this is
13:23suggesting is that if they want to focus on the longevity of the show, they can't be bogged down
13:27with a Christmas special that's going to interfere with that. No one's going to want to pitch for a
13:31show where they don't know where they can actually, how can they pitch for something if they don't
13:35actually know where the show was last, where it was left off. And without the Christmas special
13:39details and a clear vision of where that's going to go, they can't pitch the future because they
13:44don't know what the present is because it's not been written yet. If I'm being honest with you,
13:48I think what happened is most likely to do with the changes in leadership at the BBC, looking in
13:55at Doctor Who as a whole, as an IP, as a franchise and going, you know what, I think the
14:00best idea
14:01is to get this out to tender so we can get fresh eyes on this and get cracking on the
14:06future of the
14:07show. And the Christmas special is hindering that. That's honestly what I think happened. I don't think
14:13it was a case of Russell T Davies writing a poor script because I think that's something that
14:19could be worked on. I don't think it would be as simple as him pitching an idea, them going,
14:22no, that's rubbish, let's not bother. I think really what happened is they looked at it from
14:26a business standpoint and went, realistically, we could get this show on the road now. Let's get
14:33this put out to tender. The Christmas special will cause problems for that. So you know what,
14:37let's take the hit. I think all of it plays into it. I think actor availability caused delays in
14:43getting the show on the road for the Christmas special. In that time, leadership's changed.
14:48Leadership changed at the BBC and they looked at it from their perspective and re-evaluated what the
14:55best move would be for the show. And I also want to just reiterate because again, everyone's like,
15:00thinks that I'm just being naive and just not accepting the show's cancelled.
15:03If the BBC had no intention of continuing making Doctor Who, if they wanted to cancel Doctor Who,
15:10then they would have just made the Christmas special and left it at that. The fact that they
15:15pulled the Christmas special, got egg on their face for that, and put the show out to tender shows
15:22their intentions to continue making the show. If they wanted to cancel it, they wouldn't have done
15:28all that. If they wanted to cancel it, they either wouldn't have announced the Christmas special in the
15:32first place and just left it as the reality war is the end and we're cancelling Doctor Who. Or at
15:38the
15:38very least, they would have gone, right, well, let's just make this Christmas special, tie everything up
15:43and call it a day. That's how I see it. If you see it differently, great. Let me know in
15:49the comments
15:50down below, but do it nicely. Do it respectfully. I'm getting a little bit frustrated with some of the
15:54not so nice comments that are coming my way just because I'm being a little bit positive about
15:59something. I don't appreciate it. Positivity is great. Being kind, being nice, looking at the
16:06bright side of things is not a bad thing to do. Let me know your thoughts on all of this
16:10in the
16:10comments down below. In the meantime, I've been Ellie for Who Culture and in the words of Riversong
16:14herself, goodbye, sweeties.
