Gary Lineker discussed Michael Carrick's recent struggles with reporter Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic
Transcript
00:00Do you get a flow, Laurie, of what the players feel about Michael Carrick?
00:05You know, behind the scenes, the whispers, etc.
00:08Has he got the confidence of the players still, do you feel?
00:11Yeah, I think so.
00:12I think that they respect him for the intelligence that he has
00:16and the kind of way that he's trying to go about it.
00:19Now, have there been some mistakes?
00:21Clearly, there must have been, right, for United to get to this point.
00:24You know, they should be doing better than this, right?
00:26While I think the squad was overachieving last season,
00:28it shouldn't be as bad as this, this season.
00:31And yeah, I think that's something that they need to work through.
00:33But I sense that they all, there's no turning against him.
00:37You know, I don't think, you know, I think certainly previous managers,
00:40you've had elements of that.
00:41Now, whether that then changes as results go on
00:44and they wonder whether he's the right guy, obviously, I guess time will tell.
00:48But for the time being right now, I certainly think that players respect him
00:51and actually see a side of him that we don't see.
00:53I certainly think he can, you know, give players a rollicking when required.
00:57So he just doesn't want to do that publicly
00:59because he feels like he should protect that kind of inner sanctum.
01:02Let's say, let's look at him in a bit.
01:02You know, let's look at him, let's look at him.
01:02So, let's look at him.
