00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most brutal deaths that took place in a
00:05film's final scene.
00:06Expect major spoilers for every entry on this list.
00:09Because I envy your normal life.
00:11Put the gun down, baby.
00:11It seems that envy is my sin.
00:13Oh, what's in the box?
00:16Number 20. Stephanie and Charles Reyes. Final Destination Bloodlines.
00:21From the very first entry in the franchise, the Final Destination movies have been known for their brutal and often
00:27creative death scenes.
00:28That film proved that even if you cheat death, you are never truly safe, in a twist ending killing a
00:33character previously deemed safe.
00:36I told you you were next. Then it just skipped me. So who's next?
00:42The sixth entry similarly ends with siblings Stephanie and Charles thinking they have managed to escape death's design.
00:48Just as they realize they aren't safe at all, a Chekhov's gun in the form of a penny causes a
00:53train to derail.
00:54It careens towards them, obliterating a neighborhood in the process.
01:10Just as the pair believe they have escaped, logs fly free from the wreckage, crushing both, calling back one of
01:16the franchise's most iconic moments.
01:19Number 19. Amleth. The Northmen.
01:22Robert Eggers' film, based on an ancient Danish legend, keeps the brutality and bloodiness of the Viking tale of revenge,
01:28on which it is based.
01:37The death and destruction come to a head at the end of the film, when Prince Amleth meets his uncle,
01:42Fionne, for a final battle at a volcanic crater appropriately nicknamed the Gates of Hell.
01:47The pair arrive nude, each carrying nothing but a sword, shield, and the rage they feel.
01:53They spar, crisscrossing the lava-spewing landscape and acting savage violence on each other, emitting sounds of pure hatred while
02:00attempting to strike the killing blow.
02:02Finally, Amleth decapitates Fionne, but as he does, he's fatally stabbed through the chest.
02:08Dying as a warrior, he's taken to the Gates of Valhalla.
02:11We are safe.
02:21Now make your passage.
02:24Number 18. David Kessler. An American Werewolf in London.
02:29Darkly hilarious, this horror comedy proves how close laughter and terror can be.
02:33Despite warnings from the specter of his decomposing friend Jack, David ignores the idea that he is a werewolf who
02:39will slaughter all he comes across during a full moon.
02:42I'm a werewolf.
02:45A werewolf?
02:51Are you alright now?
02:53I don't know, I'll let you know the next full moon.
02:55In the film's final sequence, David, turned into a merciless killing machine, terrorizes the streets of London.
03:02Cornered by the police in an alley, for a brief moment, we think there may be hope when David's love
03:06interest, Alice, arrives.
03:08Despite her declaration of love, the beast lunges at her and is quickly gunned down.
03:14Please.
03:17Please let me help you.
03:24I love you, David.
03:25As Alice cries, David's now human body lays naked, and a smash cut to the credits starts with the cheekily
03:31upbeat song, Blue Moon.
03:33Number 17. Everyone. The Cabin in the Woods.
03:37A clever deconstruction of the slasher subgenre, Cabin in the Woods sees its protagonists plagued by trope movie monsters sent
03:43by an unseen group with unclear motivations.
03:46This we offer in humility and fear, for the blessed peace of your eternal slumber, as it ever was.
03:55As it ever was.
03:56The stereotypical last girl and stoner, Dana and Marty, unexpectedly survive, making their way into the organization's underground base.
04:03Reaching an ancient temple, they learn the truth.
04:06Their ritualistic sacrifice was meant to appease angry ancient gods.
04:10To prevent humanity being wiped out, Dana must kill Marty.
04:14The whole world, Marty?
04:15Is in your hands, Dana.
04:18For a moment, it seems like she will.
04:20But ultimately, the pair decide that a world built on sacrifice isn't really worth saving.
04:24The walls crumble around them, as the last shot of the film shows a vengeful deity's hand breaking through the
04:30surface of the earth.
04:31Number 16. Mr. Orange and Mr. White.
04:35Reservoir Dogs.
04:35After a diamond heist goes wrong, undercover cop Mr. Orange lays on the ground bleeding out as the rest of
04:41the crew arrives.
04:42The heist organizer, Joe, deduces Orange was the traitor, pointing his gun at the young man, leading to Orange's friend
04:49and mentor, Mr. White, to draw on Joe.
04:51Joe, you're making a terrible mistake I'm not going to let you make.
04:55Come on, guys.
04:56Nobody wants this.
04:57Joe's son Eddie then draws on White, and all three are locked in a tight Mexican standoff.
05:02Bullets fly, killing Joe and Eddie, and severely injuring White.
05:05As the older man cradles his friend's head, and the police are heard outside, Orange admits the truth.
05:11White lets out a wail of despair, pointing a gun at Orange's head.
05:15The cops burst in, and White shoots Orange, before being gunned down himself seconds later.
05:20Don't do it!
05:21Drop the gun, man!
05:22Don't drop the gun!
05:23Number 15. Rex.
05:25The Vanishing.
05:26After his girlfriend Saskia goes missing, Rex becomes more and more obsessed with uncovering her fate.
05:32I want to know what happened to my friend.
05:39After years of searching, alienating himself from those that still care about him,
05:43he finally comes face to face with her abductor, who offers a sinister choice.
05:47If Rex wants to know the truth about Saskia, he will have to experience it himself.
05:51Ultimately, his need to know the truth gets the better of him,
05:54and he drinks the laced coffee the kidnapper provided him.
05:57Rex wakes in a wooden box, buried underground, learning the horrific truth,
06:02but only by dying just as she did.
06:07Chillingly, the man behind it all goes back to his idyllic family life in the last shot of the film.
06:13Number 14. Diane Selwyn.
06:15Mulholland Drive.
06:16In true David Lynch style, Mulholland Drive has one of the most bizarre, disturbing,
06:21and open-to-interpretation endings of any film out there.
06:23Are you sure you want this?
06:31More than anything in this world.
06:33The dreamlike scene begins with an elderly couple from earlier in the film
06:37chasing Diane through her home as strobing lights flash.
06:40Diane's screams of terror, along with the eerie squirt from Angela Badalamenti,
06:44feels almost maddening.
06:46Both are quickly silenced as Diane grabs a gun and ends her own life,
06:50her body in the spot where a rotting corpse was previously seen.
06:53The abrupt violent end is surreal,
06:55and leaves viewers with a sense of whiplash as they exit the theater.
07:05Was what transpired a dream, a memory, some alternate reality,
07:10or something else altogether?
07:12Number 13. The Wild Bunch.
07:14The Wild Bunch.
07:15Shocking for the time in terms of its depictions of violence
07:18and the barbarous nature of its main characters,
07:21The Wild Bunch shocked audiences when it was released in 1969.
07:39This came to a head in the bloody climax of the film,
07:42where the titular gang of outlaws were drawn into a massive gunfight with the Mexican army.
07:46Beginning with one of their members' throats being slashed,
07:49in the ensuing bloodbath, dozens were gunned downed,
07:52some by a machine gun, or even blown up with dynamite.
07:55In the battle, all of the gang were killed,
07:57ultimately unable to adapt to a changing world,
08:00going out in a storm of bullets they knew they would never survive,
08:03making one final stand.
08:04Ain't like it used to be, but, uh, it'll do.
08:09Number 12. Paul Conroy.
08:11Buried.
08:12Set during the Iraq War,
08:14Buried takes place entirely in a coffin buried underground,
08:17featuring a single actor, Ryan Reynolds, on screen during its runtime.
08:20How did you end up in the coffin, sir?
08:22I was put here.
08:23In the coffin.
08:24Yes.
08:25Please.
08:26Help.
08:26Reynolds plays a truck driver.
08:28Paul, captured by terrorists,
08:30attempting to guide his would-be saviors to his location,
08:33despite not knowing that location himself.
08:35Just as all hope seems lost,
08:37the coffin filling with sand,
08:38and Paul quickly running out of air,
08:40Paul receives a call.
08:41Help is on the way.
08:42Paul's saviors frantically dig,
08:44but something is wrong.
08:45They are at the wrong spot.
08:47It is in his coffin,
08:48and the last shot of the film
08:50sees the box fill like the bottom of an hourglass,
08:52forever sealing his fate.
08:54I'm so sorry, Paul.
08:56What is it?
08:56I'm sorry.
08:57What is it?
08:58It's Mark White.
09:00He brought us to Mark White.
09:03I'm sorry.
09:06I'm sorry.
09:07Number 11.
09:08Elizabeth Sparkle.
09:09The Substance.
09:11Once a Hollywood celebrity
09:12with her own star on the Walk of Fame,
09:14Elizabeth Sparkle's time in the sun has long passed.
09:17It's then that she discovers the substance,
09:19allowing her to create a young alter ego,
09:21Sue,
09:22with disastrous side effects.
09:23I'll see you next week.
09:28And in the meantime,
09:31take care of yourself.
09:33After a series of body horror antics,
09:35where the original Elizabeth is killed,
09:37Sue creates a second alter ego,
09:39a horrible hybrid monstrosity.
09:41Dubbed Monstro Elisa Sue,
09:43the pulsating hunchback of flesh
09:45contains both Sue and Elizabeth's faces.
09:47Things don't go well for Elisa Sue,
09:49who eventually explodes
09:50into a disgusting mass of blood and guts.
09:53The hung containing Elizabeth's face
09:55inches along Hollywood Boulevard,
09:56eventually finding her cracked star.
09:59What about you?
10:03You're irreplaceable!
10:08Smiling as she imagines her adoring fans,
10:10she melts into goo,
10:12before being swept away.
10:14Number 10.
10:15Paul Boehmer.
10:16All Quiet on the Western Front.
10:17Based on the classic novel,
10:19All Quiet on the Western Front
10:20is a harrowing tale of World War I,
10:22with the once idyllic young German man,
10:24Paul,
10:25witnessing atrocities
10:26and his friends' deaths.
10:27What are you waiting for,
10:28the trees?
10:30What are you waiting for?
10:31What are you waiting for?
10:32What are you waiting for?
10:33What are you waiting for?
10:34After years of bloodshed,
10:36an end is finally in sight,
10:37as a treaty to bring about
10:38the war's end is signed,
10:39going into effect
10:40at 11 in the morning.
10:41The world has one more cruel twist
10:43for Paul, however.
10:44A bitter German commander
10:45orders one last offensive
10:47to take place at 1045.
10:49In one last charge,
10:50Paul and his countrymen,
10:51whose lives are barely
10:52an afterthought
10:53for their superiors,
10:54rush in.
10:55With mere seconds left
10:56before the clock strikes 11,
10:58Paul is stabbed,
10:59succumbing to death
10:59as the world declares peace.
11:13Number 9.
11:14John Doe and Tracy Mills.
11:167.
11:17The young and optimistic
11:18David Mills
11:18is partnered with
11:19William Somerset
11:20when a sadistic killer
11:21begins committing
11:22horrific murders
11:23in accordance with
11:23each of the seven deadly sins.
11:26Honestly,
11:27have you ever seen
11:28anything like this?
11:32No.
11:33With two sins still
11:34unaccounted for,
11:35the murderer,
11:36only known as John Doe,
11:37reveals himself,
11:39leading them outside the city,
11:40promising to unveil
11:41the fates of wrath and envy.
11:43There,
11:44Doe reveals he was envy,
11:45as he desired Mills' life,
11:47and a box containing his wife,
11:49Tracy's head,
11:50is delivered.
11:51Devastated,
11:51Mills threatens to kill Doe,
11:53making him the embodiment of wrath
11:54and fulfilling Doe's plan.
11:56Become vengeance, David.
11:58Ah, she's alright,
11:59you tell me.
11:59Become wrath.
12:02Somerset begs him
12:03not to give Doe what he wants,
12:04but Mills,
12:05overcome by rage,
12:06shoots the murderer,
12:07ending the movie
12:08on an incredibly bleak note.
12:10Number 8.
12:11Tony Montana.
12:13Scarface.
12:14The end of this crime epic
12:15sees its protagonist
12:16surrounded by an army of enemies
12:18as he's on coke.
12:19Devoted to make one final stand,
12:21Tony Montana,
12:22played by Al Pacino
12:23at his scene-chewing best,
12:25begins to dispatch the assailants
12:26invading his mansion.
12:27Pulling out his rocket launcher,
12:29he speaks the now iconic line,
12:31Say hello to my little friend!
12:35Firing an explosive round.
12:37Coated in blood,
12:38both from himself
12:39and his attackers,
12:40he continues to stand,
12:41hurling insults at his foes.
12:43In his drug-fueled rage,
12:44he fails to notice
12:45an assassin creep up behind him.
12:47A shotgun blast
12:48at point-blank range
12:49ends his life,
12:50and his body tumbles
12:51over the edge,
12:52falling face-first
12:53into his decadent pull.
12:59Tony Montana might have coined
13:01one of the most
13:01hardcore movie quotes
13:02of all time,
13:03but where does he stand
13:04amongst Al Pacino's canon
13:05of incredible characters?
13:06Let's watch some of our
13:07biggest Pacino fans
13:08battle it out,
13:09Simply the Best style.
13:11It's not personal, Sonny.
13:13It's strictly business.
13:16Hello, and welcome
13:17to Simply the Best,
13:18the show where we debate
13:19the pop culture subjects
13:20we're most passionate about,
13:21but you choose the winner.
13:22I'm your moderator,
13:23Rebecca Brayton.
13:24Today's topic,
13:25most iconic Al Pacino character.
13:28Our debaters are
13:29Matt D on team Tony Montana
13:31versus Tori on team Frank Serpico
13:33versus Matt G on team Michael Corleone.
13:36Each debater will make their case,
13:38and then we'll leave
13:39the decision to you.
13:40So now I welcome our speakers
13:42into the arena.
13:43We flipped a coin,
13:44which Matt D has won,
13:46and he has chosen to speak first.
13:48So Matt,
13:48your 30 seconds starts now.
13:50Okay, Rebecca,
13:51this is the Al Pacino character
13:52that completely escapes
13:54the movie
13:54and became a pop culture language.
13:59Okay, in Scarface,
14:01Tony goes from Cuban immigrant
14:03to Miami kingpin,
14:05and Al Pacino's performance
14:07makes it unforgettable
14:08every step of the way.
14:11The suits,
14:12the accent,
14:13the lifestyle,
14:14the excess,
14:15the paranoia,
14:16the explosions,
14:17the literal ones as well.
14:19Listen,
14:20this is a character
14:21that if you've never seen the movie,
14:23you know who it is.
14:24He's merchandise,
14:25he's memes,
14:27he's a Halloween costume.
14:29The world
14:30is his.
14:31Say hello to my little friend!
14:37You want to play with us?
14:38Okay!
14:40Tori,
14:40tell us all about Frank Serpico.
14:42Listen,
14:43Michael Corleone,
14:44Tony Montana,
14:45of course,
14:45these are some of the most
14:46well-known characters
14:47in film history,
14:48but it's one thing
14:49to play an iconic fictional villain
14:51and another to depict
14:53a real-life hero.
14:54As Frank Serpico,
14:55Al Pacino gives us
14:56intensity with integrity.
14:58Through his performance,
14:59we connect with the true story
15:01of Serpico's fight
15:02against police corruption,
15:04which is as relevant now
15:05as it was in the 60s and 70s.
15:07But as a character,
15:08Pacino's Serpico is unforgettable.
15:10Even if you've never seen Serpico,
15:12just like Scarface,
15:13you can picture Pacino
15:14with the long hair,
15:15the scruffy beard,
15:16and the hat.
15:17Am I biased?
15:18Maybe.
15:19But I'm a Serpico,
15:20so that means
15:21I'm being honest.
15:23You know what they say,
15:24don't you?
15:26No, what did they say?
15:28If you love a man's garden,
15:30you gotta love the man.
15:32We love Nepo babies.
15:34Matt, tell us all about
15:35Michael Corleone.
15:36Are you related to Michael Corleone?
15:38I am not, unfortunately.
15:40Good to know.
15:42Sure, Michael Corleone
15:43gets three movies
15:44to cover his rise and fall
15:45in organized crime,
15:46but Pacino's commitment
15:48to the role is so phenomenal
15:49that Michael's journey
15:50would be just as impactful
15:52even if it happened in one movie.
15:54Thanks to his performance,
15:55Pacino defines our understanding
15:57of antiheroes
15:58as we watch Michael begin
15:59as a promising war hero
16:00whose idealism
16:01is slowly chipped away
16:03until he has no choice
16:04but to get involved
16:05in the family business.
16:06Along the way,
16:07Pacino brings his signature gravitas
16:09without letting any big swings
16:11affect the little nuances
16:12of his performance.
16:13He makes Michael someone
16:14you grow to hate
16:15even though you feel sorry for him,
16:17and that's what you'd want
16:18from one of the most iconic
16:19movie characters of all time.
16:22Just when I thought I was out,
16:24they pull me back in.
16:27Let us know in the comments
16:28who your favorite
16:29Al Pacino character is.
16:30Now, let's get back into the list.
16:33Number 7.
16:34Ben.
16:34Night of the Living Dead.
16:36George Romero has largely
16:37been credited with popularizing
16:39the tropes that would come
16:39to define zombie films
16:41in this independent film,
16:42and a bleak ending
16:43was no exception.
16:44The cellar's the safest place.
16:46I'm telling you,
16:47they can't get in here.
16:48Following a group of survivors
16:49hunkering down in a farmhouse,
16:51the group is slowly picked off
16:52by the undead one by one.
16:54Finally,
16:55only one survivor remains,
16:56the stoic Ben,
16:57who escapes the ghouls
16:58by taking shelter in the cellar.
17:00Finally,
17:01an armed group arrives,
17:02taking out zombies,
17:04and Ben emerges seemingly saved.
17:06Rather than being his savior,
17:07however,
17:08the group is his undoing,
17:09mistaking him for a ghoul
17:10and shooting him dead.
17:12Good shot.
17:13Okay,
17:14he's dead.
17:14Let's go get him.
17:15That's another one for the fire.
17:17It's a sudden and cruel end
17:18for the one person
17:19that made it through.
17:21Number 6.
17:21Logan.
17:22Logan.
17:23Drawing inspiration
17:24from the comic
17:25Old Man Logan,
17:26as well as the classic
17:27Western film Shane,
17:29Logan followed a jaded
17:30and bitter Wolverine
17:31in a bleak future.
17:32But we took you in.
17:35I gave you a family.
17:38They're gone now.
17:39Logan.
17:42Logan.
17:45But it's you too.
17:46Over the course of the film,
17:48however,
17:48he begins to rediscover
17:49his humanity
17:50by protecting a group
17:51of young mutants,
17:52including his daughter,
17:53Laura.
17:54With his healing factor
17:55essentially gone,
17:56Logan defends the kids
17:57in a final confrontation
17:58where he is brutalized
18:00by his own clone
18:01and skewered
18:01by a tree branch.
18:03The scene serves
18:04as a perfect send-off
18:05to a character
18:05played by Hugh Jackman
18:06for almost two decades,
18:08passing the torch
18:09to the next generation.
18:10Seeing the formerly
18:11unkillable character
18:12cut to shreds
18:13and dying
18:13as Laura gives a eulogy
18:15is tragic
18:16yet moving.
18:17A man has to read
18:18what he is,
18:19Joey.
18:21Can't break them all.
18:26There's no living
18:27with the killing.
18:29There's no going back.
18:32Number five.
18:33Sergeant Neil Howey.
18:34The Wicker Man.
18:35Devout Christian
18:36police officer
18:37Howey becomes troubled
18:38when investigating
18:39the disappearance
18:40of a young girl
18:41in a remote pagan community
18:42in this folk horror classic.
18:43That's not May's daughter though.
18:49No, she's not May's.
18:51Then who is she?
18:52Seemingly a human sacrifice
18:54meant to bring back
18:55their crops,
18:56Howey appears to save
18:57the girl near the end
18:57of the film.
18:58In a cruel twist however,
19:00it's revealed that
19:00Howey was always
19:01the intended sacrifice
19:02and the villagers
19:03place him
19:04in a gigantic Wicker Man.
19:05The villagers sing
19:06a folk song
19:07and Howey recites a hymn
19:08as they burn him alive.
19:09It's brutal ending
19:10critiquing religious extremism.
19:13The Lord's my shepherd
19:17I'm not one
19:19He makes me down
19:25His howls of anguish
19:27along with the cries
19:28of the animals
19:29being sacrificed
19:29are even made
19:30all the more disturbing
19:31as the people outside
19:33joyously revel in song.
19:35Number four.
19:36Howard Ratner
19:37Uncut Gems
19:38One of the most
19:39anxiety-inducing movies
19:40ever made.
19:41Uncut Gems
19:42follows jeweler
19:42and gambler
19:43Howard Ratner
19:44as he makes
19:45one bad decision
19:45after another.
19:46I made a crazy risk
19:48a gamble
19:49and it's about
19:50to pay off.
19:51Getting deeper
19:51and deeper in debt
19:52to his loan shark
19:53Arno
19:54Howard places
19:55an absurdly large
19:56and unlikely bet
19:56on a basketball game.
19:58When Arno tries
19:59to cancel it
19:59Howard locks him
20:00and his goons
20:01and his goons
20:01in a glass safe
20:02then finally
20:03things start
20:04to turn around
20:04thanks to a stone
20:05Howard lent
20:06to Kevin Garnett.
20:07This is the beauty
20:08of betting
20:08This is the beauty
20:10of betting
20:10you know?
20:11Finally triumphant
20:12a smiling
20:13and laughing
20:13Howard
20:14sets his captives
20:15free.
20:16The movie only
20:16lets the audience
20:17feel jubilation
20:18for a moment
20:18before one of the
20:19goons shoots Howard
20:20the mirrored ceiling
20:21reflecting the bullet
20:22wound in his head.
20:23Number three.
20:24Randall McMurphy
20:25One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
20:27During his time
20:28at a mental institution
20:29Randall McMurphy
20:30forms bonds
20:31with many of the
20:32facility's patients
20:33none more so
20:34than the tall
20:34and seemingly silent
20:36Native American
20:36nicknamed Chief
20:37who he plans to escape with.
20:39Let's get out of here.
20:42Out.
20:48Canada.
20:51Canada.
20:52We won't be there
20:53before these
20:54son of a bitches
20:54know what hit
20:55him.
20:56McMurphy's free-spirited
20:57nature brings joy
20:58into his new
20:59friend's lives
20:59but also puts him
21:00at odds
21:01with the tyrannical
21:02Nurse Ratched
21:02who eventually
21:03has McMurphy
21:04lobotomized.
21:05The last scene
21:06in the movie
21:06sees Chief
21:06finding him in bed
21:08that vibrant
21:08spark of life
21:09literally cut out
21:10of him.
21:11You're coming
21:11with me.
21:19Chief then
21:20commits an act
21:21that's both brutal
21:22but also merciful
21:23smothering his friend
21:24with a pillow.
21:25In the last moments
21:26Chief escapes
21:27taking the adventurous
21:28spirit of McMurphy
21:29with him.
21:30Number 2
21:31Bonnie Parker
21:32and Clyde Barrow
21:33Bonnie and Clyde
21:34Even though the deaths
21:35of real life gangsters
21:36Bonnie and Clyde
21:37were well known
21:38when the movie
21:38was released
21:39their bloody end
21:40was still shocking
21:40to see on the big screen.
21:41glad it's Jane
21:44time to go home now.
21:47Transgressive
21:47in a number of ways
21:48it's likely that
21:49many of the brutal
21:50endings on this list
21:51would not even exist
21:52at all
21:52if it were not
21:52for Bonnie and Clyde
21:53which pushed film violence
21:55far past
21:55what it had been prior.
22:03the scene is a particularly
22:04idyllic roadside stop
22:06quickly interrupted
22:07by the deaths
22:07of its main characters
22:08torn apart by a hill
22:10of bullets coming
22:10from unseen attackers.

22:26Billy and the Survivors
22:27The Mist
22:28Played by nightmarish
22:30monsters concealed
22:31by a mysterious mist
22:32a group of survivors
22:33take shelter
22:34in a supermarket.
22:35Everybody just stay put
22:36okay
22:37just stay inside the store.
22:39The Lovecraftian horror
22:40slowly pick them off
22:41and in the end
22:42the group has been
22:42reduced to five.
22:44Among them
22:44is the central character
22:45David
22:46and his son Billy.
22:47Not wanting Billy
22:48and the others
22:49to experience any more pain
22:50David uses his last
22:51four bullets
22:52in an act of mercy.
22:53What truly makes
22:54this seem brutal however
22:55isn't that moment
22:56but what directly follows.
22:58David stumbles
22:59into the mist
23:00expecting to be killed
23:01but a tank emerges
23:02from the fog
23:03followed by a truck
23:04of survivors.
23:05The mist clears
23:06the day is saved
23:07and David screams
23:08in agony
23:09broken by the needless
23:10act he just
23:11committed.
