US President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an energy ceasefire in their ongoing conflict, warning both sides not to break it. The announcement follows earlier discussions to negotiate an arrangement with Moscow to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian energy supplies amidst a global energy crunch and rising domestic gas prices ahead of US midterm elections. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly indicated that while the announcement was unexpected, Ukraine would agree if Russia honours the truce. However, Moscow has yet to issue a concrete confirmation, leaving questions over whether both parties will adhere to the terms and halt strikes on each other's energy infrastructure.

00:01On that note, we're beginning the bulletin with our focus on breaking news that's coming in.
00:05This is President Donald Trump saying there is an energy ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
00:14Both parties have agreed, do not break it.
00:17That's the message from the President himself.
00:20He says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tells Axios,
00:24the announcement was news for me, but if Russians agree to an energy ceasefire,
00:29Ukraine will also agree.
00:31This is what's been said by President Donald Trump at this given point,
00:36and it's a very crucial announcement that we are getting to learn about
00:40because, remember, only earlier in the day we had seen that the President,
00:44yesterday that is, had come out to announce that they are, in fact,
00:48trying to negotiate a deal with the Russian side because of the energy crisis across the world
00:54to, in fact, lift temporarily the sanctions on the energy supplies from Russia.
01:01And now this is the next announcement that we see.
01:03Pranay Upad here joins us on the broadcast to bring all of it to context.
01:07Pranay, what do we understand when we speak of an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia
01:15and the possibility of such a deal being cracked by both sides,
01:19given that the war has been continuing for far too long between the two?
01:24It was a very important announcement made by US President Donald Trump today,
01:28and, you know, but we have to see that, you know, how Moscow reacts to this announcement
01:34and how Kiev announced this announcement because recently the statement which are coming from Kiev
01:41indicates that there is an if conditionality because President Zelensky and his administration
01:47is indicating that if Russia is ready to adhere with this agreement, then Ukraine will also go along.
01:55And meanwhile, there is no concrete announcement from Moscow as yet as far as this announcement is concerned.
02:01But certainly this should be seen in the context of the recent announcement made by President Donald Trump
02:06to buy more diesel from Russia and in fact, you know, there is an incoming midterm election in the United
02:13States
02:14and the energy prices are going up in the United States and President Donald Trump is trying to contain
02:20the gas prices in the United States ahead of the midterm election.
02:24So clearly, you know, this is an indication of the geopolitical pressure as well as the domestical political pressure
02:31on President Donald Trump to go for such a measure.
02:34But we have to see that because in the past as well, we have seen, you know,
02:38how such announcements were made by the leaders but not, you know, adhered by the respective parties
02:45and until and unless there is an execution or there is an adherence or to this kind of understanding,
02:52then certainly, you know, this will only be reduced to merely a social media post or some kind of announcement
03:00because we have seen that the agreement which was signed by none other than President Donald Trump himself
03:05as far as the West Asia crisis is concerned also could not, you know, sustain or live through only a
03:13few weeks.
03:14So we have to see that, you know, how this announcement, if it is true, this is certainly a thing
03:20which the world would welcome
03:21because the energy infrastructure was largely targeted by both parties, both Russia and Ukraine targeted each other's, you know,
03:29for energy facilities and this has actually accentuated and aggravated the energy crisis in the world
03:35and this will only relieve pressure as far as the energy supplies are concerned if both parties decide to adhere
03:42and, you know, to respect this agreement.
03:46Right, Fanef.
03:47Right, thank you for bringing that to our perspectives as to how this will indeed help the situation
03:54that the whole world has been facing in terms of an energy crisis
03:58and we'll, of course, keep a look at how things proceed
04:01and whether both sides actually come to the table to agree to the terms of the ceasefire.
