00:01Man, that's Saturday night.
00:30These are the words you spoke.
00:32Throw up your teeth, throw away your faith.
00:36Go to the country, build you home.
00:42Find a little garden, eat a lot of peace.
00:47Try to find Jesus on your own.
00:54I'm up in the balcony of my old high school.
00:58My alma mater, Proviso East High School.
01:01And that pounding in the background is all my guys working
01:06and getting the stage ready for tomorrow night's big show.
01:09See?
01:11See, you'll get paid by the hour if you can tell.
01:31Follow me.
01:33We'll go down to one of my favorite classes, detention.
01:38I knew the dean of students pretty darn good.
01:42Some teachers, just the sight of me, bugged them.
01:46And they would send me down to the dean if they just thought I was going to cause trouble.
01:51I must have just looked like a wise guy, you know.
01:54I'll tell you what, though, you can meet some really pretty girls in detention.
01:59I was always trying to be Elvis.
02:02You know, from the time I was 11, I would comb my hair in a pompadour.
02:06My hair didn't want to go there.
02:09It was not something my hair wanted to do.
02:11I even got around to using bacon fat once, and it looked so good, man.
02:17My hair would look black with the bacon grease and slicked back, you know.
02:24When I discovered this, it was the middle of July.
02:27I walked down the street and my mother said it smelled like breakfast coming down the street, you know.
02:33Nah, you didn't want that.
02:35Chase the girls away.
02:37Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery.
02:46Make me a poster of an Odeo.
02:56Just give me one thing that I could hold on to.
03:04To believe in this living is just a hard way to go.
03:14I was a very poor student all through school, especially in high school when things got challenging, you know.
03:22But whenever I'd get an assignment, usually in English, where you didn't have to crack a book.
03:27It was pure imagination.
03:28Write me a three-page story.
03:31Write something with dialogue, nothing but dialogue.
03:33Know he said or she said it.
03:35And stuff like that.
03:37Bang!
03:38I just like, you know.
03:40I get it out faster than I could write.
03:46It's for Bonnie Raitt.
03:57Thank you for coming out tonight and supporting the Mayweather Fine Arts Association.
04:12I was a pretty shy fella.
04:16You know, but the first time I ever stood there and they had one cheap little spotlight and they shined
04:21it on me, I couldn't shut up.
04:34There you go. Have a great day today.
04:41Yeah.
04:44Thank you!
04:45Thank you!
04:46Thank you!
