00:23Netanyahu has unleashed a furious attack on the Nobel Peace Prize committee after it awarded
00:29the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay, accusing the committee of losing its moral compass
00:36and rewarding what he calls the demonization of Israel. On October 9th, the official account of
00:43the Israeli Prime Minister's Office published a scathing written statement on X, targeting Pillay,
00:50the Nobel Committee, and international criminal court prosecutor Karim Khan. Netanyahu accused
00:56Pillay of spreading what he described as false accusations against Israel, and claimed her
01:02work helped build a case against the Israeli leadership. He also attacked the Nobel Committee
01:08for honoring her, calling the decision a travesty of justice. But why has Pillay become such a
01:14controversial figure for the Israeli government? Navinathem Navi Pillay is a South African jurist
01:21with decades of experience in international law. She served as the United Nations High Commissioner
01:27for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, and presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
01:35Her work helped strengthen the recognition of sexual violence as a crime under international
01:41law. More recently, Pillay chaired the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the
01:49Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, from 2021 to 2025. In September 2025,
01:59the Commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Its report identified four acts
02:06listed under the Genocide Convention and found evidence of the specific intent required for genocide.
02:13It also accused senior Israeli leaders, including Netanyahu, of incitement to genocide. Israel has
02:21categorically rejected these findings, describing the Commission's work as biased and politically
02:26motivated. The Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize Committee, meanwhile, awarded Pillay the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for
02:34her efforts to promote peace and international law. The committee praised her judicial rigor, integrity,
02:41and courage, presenting the award as a defense of the international legal order at a time of growing
02:47pressure. The controversy extends to Karim Khan, the ICC prosecutor who sought arrest warrants for Netanyahu
02:55and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
03:10Netanyahu's statement accused Khan of relying on Pillay's work to build what he called a fabricated case against
03:18Israel. It also referenced sexual misconduct allegations made against Khan by ICC staff. Khan has denied the
03:27allegations, and they should not be treated as established findings. The Israeli Foreign Ministry also
03:33condemned the Nobel decision, accusing the committee of legitimizing anti-Israel prejudice.
03:39Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Dannon, argued that the award undermined the committee's
03:45credibility. Pillay, however, has spent her career working on international justice, human rights, and
03:52accountability. She dedicated the Nobel recognition to survivors of international crimes, and expressed surprise when
04:00she learned she had won. The dispute now places the Nobel Peace Prize at the center of a fierce confrontation
04:06over Gaza, international law, and the institutions holding political leaders accountable. For Netanyahu, the award
04:14represents what he sees as an endorsement of accusations against Israel. For the Nobel Committee, it recognizes a jurist
04:22whose work reflects the importance of international law.
