00:00This is our 11-10 game. First on the team, Andy Murray.
00:16Right, we are here at the home of golf, St Andrews, and I'm joined by a Scottish national treasure,
00:23none other than tennis legend turned scratch golfer, Andy Murray. Andy Murray, how are you doing?
00:27Good, not quite scratch yet. I'm really getting there, hoping to get there.
00:32And we're going to do a little what's in the bag, if that's alright, but before we touch on the
00:36clubs,
00:36I just want to ask you, how into your equipment are you, your specs and all the models and that
00:41sort of thing?
00:42Do you get really deep into the weeds on equipment, or do you just sort of use whatever you're given?
00:46I'm pretty analytical, and I love all that stuff, and golf's brilliant for that.
00:53You've got all the technology to test all the different clubs, different shafts,
01:00and see what's sort of giving you the best performance, and yeah, I love all that.
01:05Okay, and you're obviously with Callaway. How has that helped your journey down to near scratch?
01:10Yeah, I mean, they've been amazing. Callaway have been brilliant.
01:14I started working with them like two or three months after I started playing,
01:18and done multiple club fittings, and they've been really good at getting me in every few months,
01:24just because I'm practicing a lot. Things change quite quickly, and getting me in different irons
01:30and woods, and yeah, they've made a big difference, helped a lot.
01:35All right, let's get straight into it, shall we? So we'll start at the top.
01:38We've got the Callaway Quantum Max Driver neutral setting. We've got a Ventus 6X Red in here.
01:44What do you like about this? So I recently went to a slightly more loft. I had a nine-degree
01:51loft
01:52originally, and now it's at ten and a half degrees, and I'm hitting it significantly better. I used to
01:58like slice quite a lot with the driver when it was a bit lower, but then since I got fitted
02:03for this,
02:03definitely hitting it a bit straighter, a bit longer, sometimes even a bit of draw on the ball,
02:09which is nice, but yeah, great, great club. Very good, and what sort of distance are we getting
02:14out of this one? Do you know? Well, on the simulator, like carry distance like 285,
02:23but then I feel like when I'm on the course, I never swing quite the same as when I'm in
02:28the
02:28simulator. I need to try and do that more, so I'm going to give that a go today on the
02:33course, yeah.
02:34And let's touch on the grip. So we're in the Golf Pride, looks like MCC plus fours here. What do
02:40you
02:40like about these grips? Are you into your grips? Do you sort of like get into the notion of the
02:45different types of models that are available? I haven't actually tried too many different
02:48grips. I do like those ones, but a lot of the tennis players prefer using like quite like
02:55thicker grips because we're used to with the tennis racket is quite chunky, and I've been recommended by
03:00a few people to try slightly thicker grips, which I'm going to give a go, but I haven't given too
03:05much
03:05thought to the grip so far. There we go. Okay, so we've got the driver and then we move down
03:10into
03:10the three-wood. This is the Quantum Triple Diamond. Okay, so slightly different model here, lower spinning
03:16model. Why have you gone for this model versus the Max in the driver? Because, so off the tee,
03:26I'd struggled hitting three-wood a lot, so I would pretty much hit either a driver or
03:32like a four-iron, basically. I felt uncomfortable hitting like three-wood and seven-wood off the tee,
03:39but since I got fitted for that, like I've started feeling a lot more comfortable hitting it off the,
03:44yeah, hitting it off the tee. I needed another option, basically, and that seems to seems to help me a
03:49bit. Okay, and presumably off the deck you like going to this club? That's my favourite club,
03:53your favourite club? Yeah, seven-wood off the deck. I don't love hitting it as much off the tee, but
03:58yeah,
03:59like approach shots into par fives and stuff, that's my favourite club. Okay, so this is the
04:03Callaway Elite Triple Diamond seven-wood. Yeah. Denali ATG TX shaft, so quite a stiff shaft in here.
04:10Yeah, I mean, I probably try to swing too quickly at times, but yeah, the thing I love about that
04:17club
04:17for me is that it's quite easy to get it in the air and also like it spins a lot,
04:24so I feel like I can
04:26stop it like on the greens, which sometimes with the sort of longer irons, a little bit harder.
04:34A little bit tricky. Well, let's move on to those irons. So we've got four to, looks like we've got
04:39four to nine iron in the Callaway Apex TCB, so been around for a few years. What do you like
04:45about these?
04:46Um, so the clubs that I had beforehand, they were slightly sort of lower launching and less spin,
04:56and I was sort of struggling a little bit to control them. Whereas with these, definitely not
05:01hitting it as far, but hitting the ball a little bit higher, a bit more spin, I feel like I
05:06get,
05:06yeah, more control basically, which is what I was looking for.
05:11Yeah. And we've got Dynamic Gold S400 Tour issue. This is a very popular shaft on tour. So,
05:17what do you like about that?
05:18So I had the X100 in the previous model and yeah, just felt like it was just a little bit
05:26hard for
05:26me to swing. Whereas that, you know, feels a little bit easier than what I had before.
05:33Gotcha. Okay. So we've got four to nine iron in those, and then just looking at your set here,
05:38so we go into a 46, which would be your pitching wedge equivalent in the Opus SP. Why have you
05:44gone
05:44for a sort of specialty wedge in the pitching wedge versus the set wedge?
05:49For whatever reason, I just didn't, I didn't love hitting the pitching wedge and I loved the, um,
05:54the pitching wedge in the, the TCBs. Um, I just, I didn't feel like I was getting much more distance
06:01than I was with my 48, I had a 48 degree wedge. So then when I chatted to Callaway about
06:06it, we were like,
06:07we could do a 46 degree in the Opus SP and a 50. Um, yeah, which, and I love hitting
06:14those clubs.
06:15Yeah. Um, I just feel like I get, again, just a little, little bit more control around the greens,
06:20maybe a little bit more spin and yeah, that's why I went with it. Okay. I love those clubs.
06:25So we've got 46 in the S grind, presumably this is mostly full shots with the 46 and the 50.
06:31And then we go into a 454, uh, it also in the S grind, but is this the club you
06:37chip with the most?
06:38I probably use that one the most. Yeah. I mean, I, I, I, I, I will use different clubs around
06:45the
06:45greens, but yeah, generally like for, for most, I would go with the, I go with the 54 degree.
06:50I just feel a little bit more comfortable with that than get a better strike on it than I do
06:54with
06:54the 58 probably. Yeah. Okay. Although I, you know, I do sometimes pull the 58 out, um, a bit too
07:00often.
07:01Well, it's, it's well worn. I have to say it looks like, I mean, let's talk about this. It
07:04looks like it's sort of a custom grind going on here on this 58 in the, the sea grind. What's
07:09going on?
07:10I'm not entirely sure why, um, why they went with that, but yeah, I tested a bunch of them in
07:16the
07:16simulator and they, yeah, they recommended that one for me. Um, I love using it. Like when I practice on
07:22the
07:23range. As I can tell. Yeah. On the range, I use it a lot, but then when I get on
07:26the course,
07:27don't quite have the confidence to pull it out. Okay. Yeah. Maybe today I'll give it a go. There
07:31you go. Okay. So then we move on to the putter. So we have got the, what have we got?
07:37Odyssey
07:38AI-1 Jailbird Mini, very popular model on tour. Um, what'd you like about this? So I,
07:45probably putting is the thing that I've found hardest to learn in golf. I find like,
07:49particularly just aiming, like when I get over the ball, I feel like I'm aiming,
07:53you know, at my spot and it's like a foot to the left. Um, and for whatever reason, I, the,
08:01like the white and black lines on the back have helped me on, on here. Yeah. Have helped me,
08:08just help with my alignment a bit. Um, also recently got it slightly shorter, um, as well,
08:15I had quite a long putter before and that seems to help me stay in my posture a little bit.
08:20Yeah. It still feels quite long. Do you know how long it is?
08:22I don't know the exact, the exact length, but, um, yeah, it's, it, it just, I, I seem,
08:29I feel like when I'm in my posture, I just feel a lot more comfortable than I did. I was
08:32quite upright
08:33before. Um, yeah. And now I feel like my eyes are a little bit more over the ball, but I've
08:38stuck with
08:38that one for, for quite a while and I like it. You've gone through all the clubs in your bag.
08:43Is there a particular favorite? Well, for me, it's the Sevenwood. Um, I would like it to be the
08:49putter. That's the one I would like to be my favorite club, but Sevenwood is probably the one
08:52that I feel most comfortable hitting. Um, yeah. And a golf ball, which golf ball do you use?
08:59I use the Chrome Tourer X. Okay. Um, what do you like about that?
09:04Well, I just, I just think it's a nice ball. I get, you know, decent distance with it. I feel
09:08like my
09:08controls, you know, relatively, relatively good. I get enough, enough spin before when I first started,
09:15I was using quite a, um, it's like a low launching, um, kind of more like distance, uh, ball. And
09:22I
09:23didn't get any spin, a spin on it. Like on par threes, I would often like feel like a good
09:28shot and
09:28like fire it way through the green. Whereas with the Chrome Tourer X, again, it's for me, it's a lot
09:34of
09:34it's about control because I, I swing quite fast. I feel like I need that, um, with the clubs and
09:40the ball. And I think I get that. Yeah. Cool. Well, thank you so much for talking us through your
09:44bag. And just finally, before I leave you, we're both playing the old course today. Any tips for me?
09:49Um, that's a good, aim, aim, aim left off the tee, aim left, not so much danger on the left
09:55of this
09:56course. Um, solid advice. Thank you very much, Andy. Appreciate it. That's all right.
