00:00Not too long ago, in a rather long telephone conversation,
00:05Toñi was reminiscing with me and telling me about that October afternoon
00:11She was already at home with her husband Miguel and her daughter Sara.
00:15They heard some noises from the neighbors and looked out the window,
00:19From the balcony, they saw that there was already a little water in the street.
00:23Toñi lives in Benetúser.
00:25And well, since that had happened on other occasions,
00:27So the father and daughter went down to the garage to get the cars out in case it flooded.
00:35So Toñi waited calmly at home, she waited a long time, she kept waiting,
00:40until he realized that a colossal torrent of water and mud
00:46It had taken two-thirds of his life.
00:50Almost two years have passed since that day in October, and Toñi is no longer the same person.
00:56Living through such traumatic situations means, in the case of Toñi García,
01:00a deep and unbearable pain that he must deal with every day,
01:03but also insomnia, anxiety, stress, certain pathologies, nightmares, fears.
01:09It is easy to understand in those situations what the origin of that emotional distress is.
01:14And it's easy to understand that we need help to get out of there.
01:17However, right now all of you and I could also talk about many people
01:21who don't understand why they have a panic attack on their way to work
01:26or why they can't get a wink of sleep,
01:29What is the reason why they sometimes feel relief from self-harm?
01:33or that they want to stay in bed, curled up in a ball, never to get out again,
01:38or who have seriously considered jumping into the void at some point.
01:42Apparently, there is nothing relevant, nothing traumatic, in the lives of those people.
01:46And yet there is an inner suffering that is there.
01:50These can be precarious living conditions, lack of work, lack of opportunities,
01:55Unwanted loneliness, social pressure, networks,
01:58There are many things that can disrupt emotional balance and cause suffering.
02:03Poor mental health is sometimes invisible.
02:08Fortunately, it's much more understandable now.
02:11Everyone understands that some people seek out a psychologist.
02:16although sometimes it's hard to find that help.
02:19This is both good and bad news because it is true that there is greater awareness
02:22when it comes to managing how important it is to manage emotions,
02:27But when you really need to move forward with that help, it's not easy.
02:32That's something you've been doing at Mental Health Spain for a long time.
02:37So now two realities coexist: on the one hand, more or less severe mental pathologies
02:41and large doses of emotional suffering.
02:46They also share a need: the need for specialized care.
02:52and good and sufficient professionals.
02:55And they have a challenge ahead of them to ensure that those treatments are truly appropriate.
02:59that specialized care is truly accessible to everyone.
03:05On this very long road, many efforts are already underway.
03:10from all levels of government and also from society,
03:13from associations of affected people, family members, professionals,
03:18that you have been working for a long time to contribute, to investigate,
03:22to truly give us a blueprint for where things should go in this improvement of mental health.
03:28You place a lot of emphasis on prevention, on how important emotional education is.
03:35at an early age so that young people and children have tools for that emotional management.
03:41Something that, you add, would also be good because it could prevent excessive pathologization
03:47which can then overwhelm the healthcare system.
03:51In prevention, you also talk a lot about the importance of healthy habits and well-being,
03:57which makes even more sense during adolescence.
04:02It's clear that poor mental health involves very complex factors; it's very difficult.
04:08It's not as simple as blaming one issue or another.
04:12But it is true, and you say so in your studies from all the associations,
04:16and there is already scientific evidence that links the possible worsening of mental health,
04:23that risk with inadequate eating patterns, foods, ultra-processed products,
04:31with sedentary lifestyle and excessive screen time.
04:38Thanks for watching the video.
