00:01:32THE END
00:01:32Ladies and gentlemen, again this evening the Daily Classic has the pleasure of presenting to you the world's most eminent
00:01:37criminologist and crime commentator, The Shadow.
00:01:41Okay, you're on the air.
00:01:45The Shadow Speaks bringing to you the latest news in the world of crime prevention and detection.
00:01:49This afternoon a crime was committed which brought only tragedy to the perpetrators. Three young desperadoes held up a bank
00:01:54and escaped in their car. The police quickly picked up their trail. There was a running gunfight between bandits and
00:01:59police which finally resulted in the three misguided young men plunging to their death. Once again this proved the truth
00:02:04of that old adage, crime does not pay.
00:02:07Well friends, we have a distinguished visitor in our midst, but the news won't make the society page. Honest John
00:02:14is back in town.
00:02:17Honest John is one of the last of our old time safe crackers. So if your strong box blows up
00:02:21with a loud bang, don't think it's the 4th of July. It may be old John celebrating his release from
00:02:26what he probably calls the big house or stir.
00:02:29Let us hope that the police commissioner Weston, whom we hear never misses one of our broadcasts, will keep an
00:02:36eye on Honest John.
00:02:38Hi there, Commissioner.
00:02:41Memorandum to Detective Bureau. Check on Honest John.
00:02:43Yes, Commissioner.
00:02:44Ladies, here's a little incident which proves the silence is really golden. Last night bandits entered George Ward's furniture store.
00:02:52Mrs. Ward was alone in the place. The good lady was so frightened she couldn't talk. At least that's what
00:02:57the bandits...
00:02:58It's too bad something don't scare him so bad that he can't talk. They ought to be a law against
00:03:03guys like him shooting their mouth off within the city limits.
00:03:07But still Mrs. Ward refused to say a word. At the point of a gun, they took from the cash
00:03:10register a dollar bill and one thin dime. The moment they'd gone, Mrs. Ward calmly removed a hundred dollar bill
00:03:16from her mouth.
00:03:17Witnesses took the license number of the car. 3Y-41-37. I'll repeat that. 3Y-41-37.
00:03:26Did you make a note of that? Yes, sir, I did.
00:03:30Last night, young Michael Nolan took his pretty fiancee Dorothy Walsh for a drive along the scenic highway overlooking the
00:03:36city.
00:03:37With a bright lover's moon overhead, they stopped to enjoy the view and to romance.
00:03:43Today police discovered their bodies in Nolan's car and are holding a transient named Miller for the murder.
00:03:51Well, you can't go in now, miss. The shadow's on the air.
00:03:54Oh, but I'm Phoebe Lane.
00:03:56Sorry you couldn't get in there if you was Calamity Jane.
00:03:58But I'm working for the shadow. Well, I'm the shadow's shadow.
00:04:01Well, then just bathe away, will you please, lady?
00:04:05But I've got important news that must go on to here right away.
00:04:08I've got it all written down here.
00:04:10Okay?
00:04:16Last night in John Morgan's warehouse, not a creature was stirring, not even watching.
00:04:19I don't know what I'm doing. This is my job.
00:04:20As Robert silently jimmied a window, they were greeted by cries of get out, get out.
00:04:27They did. An hour later, when police stopped to investigate the open window, the parrot was still screaming,
00:04:34Get out! Get out!
00:04:35Ladies and gentlemen, there seems to be a slight disturbance in the studio.
00:04:46Ladies and gentlemen, a news blast has just been handed to me.
00:04:49I can't guarantee its authenticity, but here it is.
00:04:52A big theater robbery is planned to take place downtown in half an hour, in fact, 9 o'clock.
00:04:56Read the Daily Classic for particulars, and now the shadow bids you good night until tomorrow.
00:05:01You didn't get the name of the police. The police won't know where to go.
00:05:04No, and neither will 10,000 other thrill-hunting sightseers.
00:05:07But hadn't you got a phone, the police?
00:05:09I don't think you have to worry about that.
00:05:11Good night.
00:05:11Good night.
00:05:14Hello.
00:05:15Oh, hello, Commissioner. It's the police.
00:05:19Yes, I have that, too. The Metropolitan Theater.
00:05:22The Metropolitan Theater.
00:05:24See here, Cranston, if this turns out to be a phony tip, I have a good mind to sue you.
00:05:29If I can find the proper grounds.
00:05:31Why not breach your promise, Commissioner?
00:05:33Listen.
00:05:38Radio broadcasting.
00:05:39Hook me up for an emergency order to all cars.
00:05:42General Order 6-2.
00:05:44All radio cars concentrate in Sector 8.
00:05:47General Order 6-2.
00:05:49All radio cars concentrate in Sector 8.
00:05:53That's us again.
00:05:54Guess you'll have to get along without us, Frank.
00:05:56Well, I guess I can hold this down alone.
00:05:57Go on.
00:06:00Oh, by the way, Miss Lane, where did you get this tip?
00:06:03From a man.
00:06:04From a man?
00:06:07Well, who was it? Don't you know his name?
00:06:09No, but he had an honest face.
00:06:14Would you mind giving me some little hint about how you met this honest face?
00:06:19Well, there was an automobile accident.
00:06:20And suddenly I remembered I was a reporter for you.
00:06:23So I stopped and asked the people their names and addresses and things.
00:06:25And one man said, I can't give you my name and address, but I can give you a big story.
00:06:29And he did.
00:06:31That's what I'm afraid of.
00:06:32He said the Metropolitan Fitter will be robbed tonight at 9 o'clock.
00:06:35Daylight saving or standard time?
00:06:37Goodness, I forgot to ask him back.
00:06:39And you had me put that choice morsel on the air.
00:06:42Well, he was so sincere and he had such an honest face.
00:06:45Such an honest face.
00:06:46Well, you better spend more time away. How did she get in?
00:06:49Well, I tried to stop her, but she's gracious.
00:06:55Well, sir, did you hear that pipe dream I just had on the air?
00:06:57Yeah, where did you get it?
00:06:59A man told her.
00:07:01Told who?
00:07:02Phoebe Lane, the girl you wished on me.
00:07:04The honor student of college journalism.
00:07:07Say, will you get her out of my hair and put her back on the household page where she belongs?
00:07:10Not a chance, Cranston.
00:07:11She said she's all fed up with recipes and household hints.
00:07:14She wants to be a real reporter.
00:07:17Oh, I see.
00:07:19Romance and adventure stuff, huh?
00:07:21Well, Mr. Heath, is she running this newspaper or are you, sir?
00:07:24Cranston, as long as she happens to be the owner's niece, I'm afraid she can pick any seat she wants
00:07:30for a ride.
00:07:31Oh, it's one of those, is it?
00:07:34Well, there's no law against our making the joyride a little, shall we say, bumpy for her, is there?
00:07:40Not that I know of.
00:07:41Thank you, sir.
00:07:50Ladies and gentlemen, this is Phoebe Lane, the real brains of the shadow who thinks he knows all about crime.
00:07:55But the real crime of the age is the way he makes you think he's so smart, when it's really
00:07:59me that does the work all the time.
00:08:04Hello.
00:08:05I didn't see you.
00:08:06That's quite evident.
00:08:08I didn't mean what I said, Mr. Cranston. I hope you can forgive me.
00:08:11I wish I could forget you.
00:08:14Oh, oh, if you think you're going to have Mr. Paul and see the robbery without me, you're crazy.
00:08:19Then that is my story.
00:08:20Phoebe, wait for Phoebe.
00:08:24Hello, Mr. Cranston.
00:08:25Now, listen, Moe, you're a fine driver and all that, but you're not working for me.
00:08:29You mean I'm tired?
00:08:30No, but you will be if you insist upon calling me by name.
00:08:33Now, remember, you're no good to me unless you don't know me.
00:08:36Okay, stranger. Where to?
00:08:37The Metropolitan Theater.
00:08:40This is going to be thrilling, isn't it, Mr. Cranston?
00:08:43Yes, and dangerous, too, particularly for you.
00:08:45For me? Why?
00:08:46Well, when the crooks start shooting, it seems they pick off the girl first.
00:08:50I never knew that.
00:08:51Oh, a strange quirk in the criminal mind. Nobody seems to understand it.
00:08:54Oh, but I understand it.
00:08:56It's because they realize that the girl is really the smart one.
00:08:58They have to get her first.
00:09:01Miss Lane, why didn't you stick to the baby and biscuit end of the newspaper business
00:09:05instead of hurling yourself into the jaws of death?
00:09:08Because I'm tired of babies and biscuits.
00:09:10I want thrills, adventure, romance.
00:09:12Ah, but the household hint page is the place to find it.
00:09:14The home is the very symbol of romance.
00:09:16Oh, no, it isn't.
00:09:17The nearest I ever came to it was when a cross-eyed washing machine sales
00:09:20and tried to kiss me in a model kitchen.
00:09:22Young lady, you're impossible.
00:09:24Not if the right man comes along.
00:09:39Hang around a while, Moe.
00:09:41Okay, stranger.
00:09:44Where are the police?
00:09:45Oh, don't worry about that. They'll be around.
00:09:47Oh, we've got to warn the theater right away.
00:09:49Oh, no, wait a minute.
00:09:49Let's do some window shopping first.
00:09:52Well...
00:09:55The boss of them all.
00:09:56Police Commissioner Weston in the flesh.
00:09:59And if this turns out to be a false alarm,
00:10:01he'll love me even less than he does now.
00:10:04Oh, but I'm sure it isn't because he had such an honest...
00:10:06Such an honest face.
00:10:09Bram!
00:10:15Hello, Commissioner.
00:10:16Say, what kind of a song and dance is this?
00:10:18I hope you realize my whole department has been shifted
00:10:20just to take care of this tip-off.
00:10:22Maybe you'd rather have the theater robbed
00:10:24than let them chalk up another black mark against your record.
00:10:26Now, see here.
00:10:27We got crime down to the lowest level it's been in years.
00:10:29But the way you advertise it,
00:10:30people will think a crime wave is on.
00:10:32You might have twice as much to deal with
00:10:34if I didn't advertise the crime doesn't pay.
00:10:36I'm helping you.
00:10:37Well, I'd like to try running the department without your help.
00:10:39Just as an experiment.
00:10:42It's nine o'clock.
00:10:44Well, well, well.
00:10:45How time flies.
00:11:07What have you got there?
00:11:08It's...
00:11:09It's my violin.
00:11:10What are you taking in there for?
00:11:12What's the place?
00:11:13Of course.
00:11:13I am a violinist.
00:11:15Yeah?
00:11:15Let me see it.
00:11:17Please, be careful.
00:11:18It is very valuable.
00:11:19Shut up!
00:11:21See?
00:11:22I no lie.
00:11:24I'm sorry.
00:11:26I owe you an apology.
00:11:28Take those off.
00:11:34I ought to send you to jail for life for bringing me out on such a wild goose chase.
00:11:38I didn't invite you.
00:11:39You crashed the party.
00:11:40Mr. Cranston, I consider you public nuisance number one.
00:11:44Good.
00:11:44I like to be first in everything, Mr. Weston.
00:11:47I gotta phone the paper.
00:11:52Hello, Heath.
00:11:53Cranston speaking.
00:11:54That robbery tip was just a gag to get the radio cars off their regular runs.
00:11:57Yes, I got a hunch something big is gonna break elsewhere.
00:12:00Better hold page one in my column for remake.
00:12:02Oh, and have Bert stand by.
00:12:04Yeah, so long.
00:12:23Give me the captain.
00:12:26McCabe reporting, sir.
00:12:27Explosion in 93 Madeira Drive.
00:12:29Yes, sir.
00:12:41First you tell me to get all my cars down here to stop a robbery.
00:12:44Then you get me to rush them all back before there is a robbery.
00:12:47What kind of a merry-goo robbery is this anyway?
00:12:48I know, but then that...
00:12:50Calling all cars from District 9.
00:12:52Calling all cars from District 9.
00:12:54Explosion reported at 93 Madeira Drive.
00:12:57Explosion reported at 93 Madeira Drive.
00:13:00That's all.
00:13:01Oh, Mr. Cranston.
00:13:04Wait to see me.
00:13:06Oh, Cassie.
00:13:15Mr. Cranston, kindly keep your finger prints to yourself.
00:13:19Riley, take the door.
00:13:24Have you searched the house?
00:13:25Yes, there's no one else here.
00:13:27What, no servants?
00:13:28Servants have a day off every week.
00:13:31Or haven't you heard?
00:13:32One in a house of this size is always someone on duty.
00:13:35If I want any information from you, I'll ask for it.
00:13:37That's fine.
00:13:38I've got to phone the paper anyway.
00:13:40Frank, is there a phone still working?
00:13:41In there.
00:13:42Thanks.
00:14:07Thanks for the ride, mister.
00:14:09Don't forget to look for your name in the paper.
00:14:12There's no one here.
00:14:13Better stand back, matey.
00:14:14Oh, but I'm a reporter.
00:14:16I'll show you my pass card.
00:14:17No reporter.
00:14:18Oh, but officer, I've got to make good on this story.
00:14:20I've got a sick mother.
00:14:21Oh, yeah?
00:14:22Well, your mother's going to have a sick daughter
00:14:23if you don't scram out of here.
00:14:25How many of them were there?
00:14:27I really can't say, sir.
00:14:30Oh, come on.
00:14:31You must have sex.
00:14:32I've got some idea.
00:14:33Think back.
00:14:34I...
00:14:35I think there was only one, sir.
00:14:37I...
00:14:38I was grabbed from behind.
00:14:41Oh, I'm...
00:14:42I'm so shaky.
00:14:43I think I'd better go to bed.
00:14:45All right.
00:14:52Stay with him, Tom.
00:14:55We're wasting time here.
00:14:56Get your men out and bring in the man who did this job.
00:14:59An old-time safe blower who just got into town.
00:15:01His name is, uh...
00:15:03Honest John.
00:15:04Honest John.
00:15:05Bring him in and we'll charge him with robbery and homicide.
00:15:08The motive of the crime wasn't robbery.
00:15:11How can you look at that safe and say the motive wasn't robbery?
00:15:14Don't you know that man's watch and wallet are gone?
00:15:16If it wasn't robbery, what was it?
00:15:18Murder.
00:15:21If it was robbery, they'd have taken the bonds, wouldn't they?
00:15:25Marvelous powers of observation.
00:15:27Why do you use the word they, Mr. Cranston?
00:15:30Because one man couldn't have done all this between the departure of the radio car and the time of the
00:15:34explosion.
00:15:35As I recall, you gave the impression Honest John was a very fast workman.
00:15:39Right.
00:15:39And much too efficient to be guilty of a botched-up job like that.
00:15:43That blast wasn't set to blow a safe.
00:15:45It was calculated to kill whoever opened it.
00:15:48I say you're wrong.
00:15:49That's great.
00:15:50I'll see that your opinion has given its proper unimportance in my column tomorrow.
00:15:54There won't be any shadow column tomorrow.
00:15:56Oh, no?
00:15:58And for a long time to come.
00:16:01Inspector, kindly file this gentleman in one of our steel cabinets.
00:16:05Somewhere out in the state.
00:16:07On what charge, Commissioner?
00:16:09Material witness.
00:16:10Thanks for being the first man on the scene of the crime.
00:16:13You certainly use your brain, Mr. Cranston.
00:16:16I wish I could say the same for you, sir.
00:16:19Oh, never mind those things.
00:16:20I don't go in for flashy jewelry.
00:16:21I don't go in for free.
00:16:42Hello.
00:16:44Give me the desk, sweetheart.
00:16:45Burke speaking.
00:16:47New lead off for shadow column.

00:22:22in one of Commissioner Weston small town jugs the shadow is just a shadow of his former self now we'll
00:22:27get down to the Gerald Morton case and the reported difference of opinion between the shadow and his
00:22:32other shadow police Commissioner Weston friends I am now of the opinion that our efficient police
00:22:37department under the able guidance of the Commissioner ladies and gentlemen an emergency has arisen in the
00:22:51studio and we must pause briefly for station identification
00:22:59you're listening to station E.M.O.R. of the daily classic our program will continue in just a moment
00:23:04well John what can I do for you so you're the
00:23:07guy that reminded the cops I was in town but I spoke of you in a very complimentary way I
00:23:12said you were tops in your
00:23:13profession no man can ask for more than that Kenny yeah but you sounded off that I'd done that amateurish
00:23:18Morton job that's my
00:23:20beef now listen when I was cracking safes which I ain't no more I was so good I could lift
00:23:27the door off lay it on a
00:23:28blanket as gentle as a mother's kiss I know that my friend I ain't no friend of yours now you
00:23:35turn the heat on me and
00:23:36you're gonna turn it off see go ahead start talking tell them who really done that job go on right
00:23:43into that microscope
00:23:46but I don't know if you can't think of anybody else tell them you done it
00:23:58my friends now that I have the situation in the studio absolutely under control we can resume our
00:24:06discussion of the Morton murder mystery why was Gerald Morton murdered he is said to have been a good man
00:24:12a
00:24:12charitable and benevolent man a man without enemy but although mr. Morton's character seemed almost too
00:24:17good to be true other men supposedly paragons of virtue have met violent ends and investigation
00:24:22has developed some extremely unsavory facts if my own investigation should develop a hidden side of
00:24:27mr. Morton's life I shall tell you all about it tomorrow well what about me I can now inform the
00:24:34police commissioner that honest John is absolutely innocent of the explosion which caused the death of
00:24:38Gerald Morton as a matter of fact John that job wasn't up to your usual professional standards
00:24:44was it no I done better than that when I was still wearing short pants surely now I ain't squawking
00:24:50about the cops pinning a murder on me but when they tries to hang an amateurish job like that Martin
00:24:55blow up on me I resent to see naturally naturally I'll get it take a general audit effective immediately
00:25:03there you are ladies and gentlemen you just had the pleasure of hearing honest John in person you
00:25:08mean I was on air you were John and thank you you you dumb ox why don't you look where
00:25:17you're going
00:25:18ladies and gentlemen for the past 24 hours the entire police force of this city have been trying to
00:25:22locate honest John yet the shadow has had no difficulty in bringing him to you on this program this evening
00:25:27for further details please read the classic this is the shadow saying goodbye until the same time tomorrow
00:25:34here's everything ever published on Gerald Morton now let's get busy yeah well let's not
00:25:41well what are you going to do I don't know you don't know that's right the shadow doesn't know

00:26:08lightning is about to strike one doesn't try to hurry it well nice going Cranston you fix things up
00:26:16just dandy now Weston is shut down on all police news with all fire news and all hospital news from
00:26:22now on it's no news for us splendid no news is good news they say and that honest John gag
00:26:28what are the
00:26:29idea of staging that stunt for the dumb stooge mr. Heath that was no stooge that was honest John
00:26:35himself with a gun at my head you mean the man that just went out Miss Lane wants excitement but
00:26:42doesn't know it when she bumps into it I don't care if it doesn't make me busy oh hello Matt
00:26:54how are you
00:26:57well where is he you mean honest John I suppose yeah I do believe as he'd say himself that he's
00:27:05taken it
00:27:06on the lamb why didn't you hold him well why should I I'm not the police commissioner then quit acting
00:27:12like a chump you know I think he's got something there Phoebe thank you you're a gentleman and a lady

00:27:37should be I don't know that I'm mr. Cranston what can I do for you sir I am Roger Morton
00:27:46brother of the
00:27:47Gerald Morton whose name you tried to besmirch in your broadcast I came over to see just what sort of
00:27:53man could be guilty of such an attack well I'd like to explain that I don't know what you meant
00:28:00by your hint about a hidden side in my brother's life but in the presence of my attorney I beg
00:28:06your
00:28:06pardon our firm has great commitments abroad young man and your paper will pay the penalty if you do

00:36:49COME ON
00:36:50DEAR
00:37:00midtown apartments
00:37:01on
00:37:01You see
00:37:02it is a rainy night
00:37:03I'm sorry
00:37:04It is so late
00:37:05I must take my wife home
00:37:06I'm sure
00:37:07But the midtown apartments
00:37:08are not far from here
00:37:09yes darling
00:37:10I'd love to have another drink
00:37:11you see
00:37:14my wife gets these attacks
00:37:15you know when it's late
00:37:16and raining
00:37:17I'm I must take her home, but they will see you tomorrow for luncheon. Shall we say at the hog
00:37:21brow at one
00:37:22The half brow one o'clock punctually good. Yeah, that's all at 12 Dutton Street
00:37:29Good night
00:37:42You want to let this coffee right your column it's strong enough
00:37:47Good strong coffee for a strong silent man
00:37:51How's this the shadow says that his statements over the air yesterday regarding the character of mr. Gerald Morton were
00:37:57Unjustified and those statements are hereby withdrawn with due apologies to mr. Morton's family
00:38:03Yeah, but you have to apologize to Commissioner Weston
00:38:05Let's not go overboard in our enthusiasm for whitewashing ourselves, but you've got to square the paper with Western
00:38:13Tell how it happened
00:38:14Describe the scene you with the mic and honest John with the gun. I
00:38:20Was afraid you'd be expecting that so I wrote it last night
00:38:23But I don't like it
00:38:26My apologies to Commissioner Weston
00:38:28Perhaps he's right in his belief that honest John is the killer my statement on the air that the man
00:38:32was innocent was made while John himself
00:38:34Was holding a gun at my head and I hope that the Commissioner with his usual fair-mindedness
00:38:40Will restore the classic to favor great
00:38:44Now Martin can't sue us and the Commissioner will have to restore our news
00:38:49Oh, I spend years building up a reputation as a crime expert then have to expose myself as a stuffed
00:38:55shirt that gets kicked around by the police department
00:38:58Well, look here son if you're so keen about that reputation of yours
00:39:02Why don't you really try to solve this case?
00:39:05Well, I would if I weren't so busy taking care of the boss's niece
00:39:31Well, did you check who is he the shadow the criminologist
00:39:39He's not to be taken lightly
00:39:41Neither were the best detectives of Paris, London, New York
00:39:45Yes, here we are
00:39:49An amateur
00:39:52Well, Mr. Cranston, how are you feeling this morning?
00:39:55Now listen Moe, for the last time if you ever call me by name again or recognize me or even
00:39:59speak to me before you're spoken to
00:40:01I'm fired!
00:40:02That's right
00:40:02Okay, stranger
00:40:24I wonder where our friend, Mr. Cranston, is
00:40:28There's something wrong, Stalko
00:40:31There's something wrong with your nerves, my friend
00:40:34We are not going to leave here with our work half finished
00:40:38Yes, yes
00:40:39I know how much that's at stake
00:40:41That's why I'm so uneasy
00:40:42See you
00:41:11That's right, tell everybody we're here.
00:41:14Suppose Floto or Starkov would have been behind this door instead of me.
00:41:17Oh, but they couldn't be. They're both at the restaurant.
00:41:19And I thought you'd be there having lunch with them too.
00:41:21Oh, and this would be a good time to do a little detecting.
00:41:23Uh-huh.
00:41:25Well, for once you had a good idea.
00:41:27Well, come on, let's get busy and look for the clue.
00:41:29So you've got a clue, have you?
00:41:31Why, yes, the watch and the wallet that were missing from the man's body.
00:41:35And where do you suggest we look for them?
00:41:37Well, my mother always used to hide things in the mattress,
00:41:39and oh, if we could only find a teapot, I'm sure it would be in there.
00:41:43Well, then all we have to do is find a teapot.
00:41:45Uh-huh, come on, let's get started.
00:41:51Telephone, Mr. Floto.
00:41:56Hello.
00:41:59We have waited long enough, Rudolph.
00:42:02Has our man come home from downtown?
00:42:05Not yet, sir.
00:42:06I understand he won't be home before late.
00:42:10He's to meet our countrymen here for a final conference tonight.
00:42:15We must know his plans.
00:42:17Keep in touch with us at the apartment.
00:42:19We shall be there in a few minutes.
00:42:23Wait up.
00:42:25Yes, sir.
00:42:25Check, please.
00:42:26At once.
00:42:28Now, I don't think we should go.
00:42:29I think we should definitely stay here and find that watch and wallet.
00:42:32Now, my woman's intuition.
00:42:33My woman's intuition.
00:42:42Hello.
00:42:44This is Floto.
00:42:46The master has just gotten home.
00:42:48Early in the afternoon will occur an opportunity when he is gone.
00:42:53Shh.
00:42:54No more.
00:42:55Someone is coming.
00:42:56I call you back.
00:42:59What's happened?
00:43:00Just a minute.
00:43:04Operator, can you trace that last call to this number, please?
00:43:07But it's important.
00:43:09Oh, I see.
00:43:12Are they going to trace the call?
00:43:13Oh, they can't trace a call on a dial phone.
00:43:16What are we going to do now?
00:43:17Well, wait till he calls back.
00:43:19Till who calls back?
00:43:21The fellow I just talked with.
00:43:42Oh, hello.
00:43:44Hello.
00:43:44We were afraid we had missed you.
00:43:47We've been waiting and waiting, haven't we, dear?
00:43:51What are you doing here?
00:43:53Well, we came for the luncheon.
00:43:55But the appointment was to have luncheon at the restaurant.
00:43:58Oh, how stupid of me.
00:44:00You know, I'm afraid last night when we made the appointment,
00:44:04my mind wasn't on it.
00:44:05You know, my wife had that attack.
00:44:07I trust she's better now.
00:44:09No, I'm afraid she's even worse.
00:44:12Aren't you, dear?
00:44:17Make her comfortable.
00:44:19We soon have lunch.
00:44:21Oh.
00:44:22Oh, poor darling.
00:44:24No, you see, she's getting another attack.
00:44:26I must take her for the air right away.
00:44:28Just a minute, Mr. Clanson.
00:44:31Your hand, Mr. Shadow.
00:44:33What do you suspect us of?
00:44:35And why?
00:44:37Well, now, you'll have to listen to the broadcast to hear that.
00:44:39You see, our business is to get interviews, not to give them.
00:44:42Isn't it, sweetheart?
00:44:44Yes, sir.
00:44:46And may we go now?
00:44:47No.
00:44:48Now that we have you here, you are going to stay.
00:44:50Take your time, mister.
00:44:53Taxi stranger?
00:44:56Scram, Phoebe.
00:44:58Thanks for your hospitality, boys.
00:45:03Nice work, Moe.
00:45:05Moe? I thought we were strangers.
00:45:08Have us a air pill?
00:45:09Don't.
00:45:18He will not go to the police.
00:45:19What makes you think so?
00:45:20Because he prefers to work alone.
00:45:26Hello.
00:45:27What's that?
00:45:29That wasn't I.
00:45:30We went out at home then.
00:45:32That was Cranston.
00:45:33Repeat what you told him.
00:45:38It's Rudolph.
00:45:39He told Cranston his master would be at home this afternoon
00:45:42and that an opportunity might occur to strike.
00:45:44That's indefinite but incriminating.
00:45:46You must act it once.
00:45:47Today.
00:45:48Tomorrow may be too late.
00:45:52Naturally, my woman's intuition told her we should get out of there
00:45:54but I was afraid to tell you because I thought you'd laugh at me.
00:45:56Well, thank goodness, it's all over.
00:45:57There's nothing to worry about now.
00:45:58You take your woman's intuition and go to luncheon.
00:46:01Oh, trying to get rid of me.
00:46:01Well, I'm not going to go.
00:46:02I'm not going to miss any more fun.
00:46:03Well, I've got some work to do.
00:46:05Now, you run along, please.
00:46:07All right.
00:46:08It's a good girl.
00:46:15Burke.
00:46:16Burke.
00:46:19Burke.
00:46:21Burke.
00:46:22Come on, get up and get going.
00:46:244-2.
00:46:25Go to the Midtown Apartments, stake out,
00:46:27watch for two foreigners in a closed car.
00:46:30Phone me as soon as they leave.
00:46:31Okay.
00:46:32And hurry for a change, will you?
00:46:33Okay, Chief.
00:46:37Hello.
00:46:39Oh, yes, Mr. Heath.
00:46:40No, still as much in the dark as ever.
00:46:43Well, those fellows are rather clever.
00:46:46As a matter of fact, they're planning another deal right now.
00:46:50Well, if I knew that, I wouldn't be hanging around here where...
00:46:53Pardon me.
00:46:54Come in.
00:46:57Oh, hello, Barrow.
00:46:58Sit down.
00:46:58I'll be right with you.
00:46:59Yes, Heath.
00:47:01No, thanks.
00:47:01I don't need you.
00:47:02What I need is a clairvoyant.
00:47:04Right.
00:47:04So long.
00:47:05I have that Morton information for you.
00:47:07Good.
00:47:08I understand that Gerald Morton's firm was interested in some very big international deals.
00:47:13Was that right?
00:47:13Yes, they still are.
00:47:15I made these notations for you.
00:47:17Their recent underwritings include 10 million Argentine fords, 28 million Danish refunding
00:47:22two and a half.
00:47:23And I understand they'll soon issue several new European debentures.
00:47:27Well, what about them?
00:47:29That might be a good investment for me.
00:47:31Certainly.
00:47:32However, these new bonds that Morton and Morton are about to offer seem to me to be highly
00:47:35speculative.
00:47:36But if the 50 million is spent to build up the army as intended, the exiled aristocrats
00:47:40will never succeed with their threatened revolution.
00:47:43Good.
00:47:43That's what I wanted to find out.
00:47:45Oh, pardon me.
00:47:46Miss Lane, do you know Mr. Barrows, our financial editor?
00:47:48Oh, you do.
00:47:49Oh, you do.
00:47:51What's this all about?
00:47:52At a time like this, you're talking about investments.
00:47:54I'll be with you in a minute.
00:47:56Editorial.
00:47:57Editorial.
00:47:57Cranston speaking.
00:47:58Whole shadow column for remake.
00:48:00Right.
00:48:01I brought you some lunch.
00:48:02I was in such a hurry, I dropped your bottle a bit, but we can share mine.
00:48:05A good assistant would never let her boss go hungry.
00:48:08Oh, thank you, Miss Lane.
00:48:09And now will you phone the commissioner and tell him I'll call him back later.
00:48:12What's his number?
00:48:12You'll find it in the book.
00:48:21L.
00:48:221, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1.
00:48:46There you are, Commissioner. First edition on the streets now, with the full explanation, apology by the shadow.
00:48:52The apology could have been stronger.
00:48:54I hope this paves the way for renewing friendly relations.
00:48:59I'm no enemy of the shadow. I always give him credit for being somewhat clever, but he should remember he's
00:49:05only an amateur.
00:49:05After all, we're professional.
00:49:07That's right, Commissioner. And I hope that you'll restore the daily classic to good standing with the department right away.
00:49:14Of course I will. Take a general order.
00:49:17Cigar, Commissioner?
00:49:18No, thanks.
00:49:23Wait till you get a load of this, Phoebe.
00:49:25The Morton case will break wide open tonight, and it'll be a big surprise to the police.
00:49:30Pardon me.
00:49:30Under the misguidance of Commissioner Weston, the department has wasted 24 hours searching for the wrong man, with the right
00:49:36men under their noses all the time.
00:49:38But won't that make the commissioner furious?
00:49:41Pardon me.
00:49:42You would get hard-boiled eggs.
00:49:45And although the murderers have completely baffled the police by their shrewdness and daring,
00:49:49pardon me,
00:49:50the shadow knows who they are and why they killed Gerald Morton.
00:49:54How do you know that? We didn't find a single clue and nothing to suggest a motive.
00:49:57Ah, yes, we did. And you know when it happens. You're intelligent. You sparkle.
00:50:02I don't know what I'd have done without you on this case, but we've got to keep going.
00:50:05Here, rush this down for the night edition.
00:50:07Yes, sir.
00:50:08Well, hurry.
00:50:09Pardon me.
00:50:37Hold me.
00:50:42I told you not to fight, Weston.
00:50:44You've ruined the paper with your grandstanding.
00:50:47Even if you have added 100,000 new readers to our circulation.
00:50:50Maybe you're right.
00:50:51Maybe I did pull a boner.
00:50:52I did it to keep the confidence of our readers.
00:50:54To prove that we've tried to expose stupidity wherever it exists.
00:50:58For years, we've been trying to educate them and their children to obey the law.
00:51:01Now, maybe you're willing to undo all the good we've done, but I'm not, Mr. Heath.
00:51:05Well, neither am I.
00:51:06But I've got the paper to think of.
00:51:08Now, suppose you're wrong in this case.
00:51:10Why, they'll laugh you out of town.
00:51:12What if you don't solve this murder this afternoon?
00:51:14Then I'm through, washed up.
00:51:16No more shadow column and no shadow.
00:51:18But if I'm right and Weston's wrong, he's the one that has to change his tune.
00:51:23He'll have to work hand in hand with me.
00:51:25And between the two of us, there'll be so little crime in this city, it'll be a crime.
00:51:29That's the spirit.
00:51:31Now you're talking.
00:51:33Yes, sir.
00:51:35I make four straight passes right in a row.
00:51:39Then I pick up them dice again, breathe on them, and I said, come on, baby.
00:51:46Pop them, knees, zip, toe.
00:51:49And right there, the little cop comes along.
00:51:52Oh, man.
00:52:06Well, how's that, boss?
00:52:09A boss?
00:52:16Shine them again, won't you, boy?
00:52:18Again?
00:52:19I done shot them three times.
00:52:44Look out there, boss.
00:52:45You better put that in the wheel and kill somebody.
00:52:49A boss, shine, money.
00:52:54We'll have the usual introduction, and then naturally work out the theme that crime doesn't pay.
00:53:03Answer that, will you please, Miss Lady?
00:53:05Hello?
00:53:07Yes, this is Mr. Cranston's office.
00:53:09Who should I say wishes to speak to him?
00:53:11I can't hear you.
00:53:13Oh, I'm so sorry.
00:53:15It sounded just like you were yawning.
00:53:17Oh, I know who that is.
00:53:18I'll take it, thanks.
00:53:19Hello, Burke.
00:53:20Yes, what's up?
00:53:22Bag and baggage, huh?
00:53:23Which way did they go, West?
00:53:24Never mind how I knew.
00:53:26Yeah, so long.
00:53:28I've got to run.
00:53:29Now, if you want to help me, you'll stay here and finish those notes.
00:53:31Uh, well, you're just trying to get rid of me.
00:53:33No, not at all, really.
00:53:34Whether or not I go on the air tonight as advertised depends absolutely upon you.
00:53:37Now, you wouldn't let me down, would you, pal?
00:53:39You bet I won't, pal.
00:53:40All right, solo.
00:53:44Hello, Fender.
00:53:45Hello, 896 Clover Road, in hurry.
00:53:48Okay, Mr. Cranston.
00:53:49Moe, you're fired.
00:53:50I've warned you a dozen times.
00:53:52Yeah, and I warned you once.
00:53:54Get in.
00:53:55You two, in the first break you make, you're driving a dead passenger.
00:54:01I know I did you wrong, John, but I'll square it later.
00:54:04I'm in a hurry now.
00:54:05Let's talk it over some other time.
00:54:07There ain't gonna be any other time for you, buddy.
00:54:10You can't laugh this off.
00:54:13My apologies to Commissioner Weston.
00:54:16I'm now convinced that he's right in his belief that Honest John is the killer.
00:54:20Oh, that's only the first edition.
00:54:22I had the red apple, the commissioner.
00:54:23Wait till you read the final edition.
00:54:25This is the final edition for you, buddy.
00:54:28Just a minute.
00:54:29Another move like that, and I'm gonna let you have it right here.
00:54:32I was only reaching for a cigarette.
00:54:34You got a cigarette, driver?
00:54:38I got you covered now, pal.
00:54:42Well, suppose you left the pain, and you want to go straight, too.
00:54:46You come to town looking for an Honest John, what do you get?
00:54:50A bum murder rap hung on you.
00:54:52Do you really want to go straight, John?
00:54:54Oh, my word of honor.
00:54:56Have a cigarette.
00:55:00Well, I'll go ahead and plug me.
00:55:03Anybody dumb enough to fall for that one's got to come.
00:55:16Am I on the air?
00:55:21Ladies and gentlemen, this is Miss Phoebe Lane, the Shadow Shadow.
00:55:25If Police Commissioner Weston is listening in, I should like him to know that the Shadow
00:55:29and I think he's the world's prize sap, and we intend to leave no stone unturned.
00:55:35The Shadow knows who killed Gerald Morton and why.
00:55:39We'll be on the air at 8 p.m. this evening as usual.
00:55:43Well, we'll see about that.
00:55:45Matthews, what's the law covering withholding of evidence from the police?
00:55:49Section 164, Revised Criminal Code, sir.
00:55:52Get out a warrant for Cranston and pick him up at once.
00:55:54Yes, sir.
00:55:55And now, ladies and gentlemen, I'll give you my own story of how I helped the Shadow
00:55:58to solve the Gerald Morton murder mystery.
00:56:00In the first place, Commissioner Weston and his very dumb stooge Detective Inspector Matthews
00:56:05were off on a false scent, as usual, and...
00:56:08Keep right on, sister. You are going great.
00:56:11Oh, I'm so sorry.
00:56:13You frightened me so I didn't know what I was saying.
00:56:15I never know what I'm saying when I'm frightened, sir.
00:56:17Do you want to see Mr. Cranston?
00:56:19Yeah, just to say hello.
00:56:21You're not going to arrest him again.
00:56:23No. Cranston and I are all personal friends.
00:56:27Oh, then I can tell you where he is. He's out in the Morton case.
00:56:29Ah, Morton.
00:56:32Thank you. Be sure to thank Mr. Cranston for me.
00:56:35Well, thank you, Mr. Matthews. I certainly will.
00:56:37I'm sure he'll thank you.
00:56:39Goodbye.
00:56:40Goodbye.
00:56:41Bye.
00:56:59Remember your instructions, Stefan.
00:57:03I'm sorry.
00:57:03I'm sorry.
00:57:04I'm sorry.
00:57:15I'm sorry.
00:57:16I'm sorry.
00:57:17I'm sorry.
00:57:17I'm sorry.
00:57:17I'm sorry.
00:57:17I'm sorry.
00:57:18I'm sorry.
00:57:18I'm sorry.
00:57:19I'm sorry.
00:57:19I'm sorry.
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:20I'm sorry.
00:57:21I'm sorry.
00:57:21I'm sorry.
00:57:22I'm sorry.
00:57:22I'm sorry.
00:57:26I'm sorry.
00:57:43Sorry if I kept you waiting gentlemen our appointment wasn't until later we are not
00:57:49the man you are expecting but we are here regarding the same matter.
00:57:54Won't you sit down really there's no need of that the business is out of the
00:58:07confidential stage and the deal is about to be concluded the deal will never be
00:58:24concluded you will kindly take out all negotiable bonds and securities in any
00:58:36large amount of money this is all I have of value here mrs. Martin's jewels and the
00:58:43bulk of my holdings are in the bank vault downtown and if you want to this is not a
00:58:48robbery mr. Martin this is a metal international diplomacy these bonds
00:58:54represent much money do they not a hundred thousand dollars or more I don't
00:59:00see what ends you can gain by killing me let us review the history of the
00:59:05international loan you were about to make tonight three years ago a French banker
00:59:09was about to lend that money he died in an auto accident the loan was next
00:59:16negotiated with an English financier who was very much devoted to his wife mr. Martin
00:59:22Martin he committed suicide so you see we have many ways of taking care of those
00:59:29who oppose us but say you did kill me there are other banking houses you can't
00:59:37prevent them all from dealing with your country we intend that the death of both
00:59:42partners and Martin and Martin shall throw this band issue into such litigation as
00:59:47will hold it in the courts indefinitely unfortunately you are not fit your brother
00:59:53at the time of the accidently plan for both of you so now you will do as I
00:59:59suggest oh if you're stubborn we'll wait for mrs. Martin
01:00:10what do you want me to write the death of your brother will make necessary that you account to his
01:00:15estate for your interest in the firm will it not of course good we take these your accounts are
01:00:24100,000 short you are faced with exposure as a faithless partner as a thief of your brother's money
01:00:32you understand now you know what to write mr. Martin
01:01:17answer your non-spoken question there's only one bullet but there are two of us
01:01:37good shot John are you surprised to see me you won't need this now mr. Martin off
01:01:44loader I thought you were clever even a small-town constable could spot that
01:01:48concealed weapon you better let me take care of that mr. Martin watch him John
01:02:01oh hello man hello how did you get here Weston sent me out to pick you up you're under arrest
01:02:06what again what's the charge this time withholding evidence in the Morton case as usual the commissioner
01:02:12is late you if it's my last act on earth I'll put you in jail for life okay you're on
01:02:27the air the
01:02:29shadow speaks announcing that the Morton case has at last been solved and the murderers are now in
01:02:33the custody of our able police this has been one of the most baffling cases in the shadows experience
01:02:37a case without a clue murderers too clever to be caught by ordinary methods and had it not been
01:02:42for the able cooperation of the police department the case would still be on foul I have already
01:02:47handed Commissioner Weston a bouquet today but now I wish to do so publicly and to compliment him for
01:02:53his shrewdness in causing the killer to think he and his men were following a false clue as a result
01:02:59the murderer and his accomplices were later taken in the act of attempting the life of mr. Roger Morton
01:03:03for the complete story read the daily classic and now my friends I'm going to ask Miss Lane the
01:03:10lovely young lady who assisted in the solution of this crime to tell her own story ladies and
01:03:15gentlemen I give you miss Phoebe Lane ladies and gentlemen there seems to be a great deal of static
01:03:30interference this evening and anyway we thank Miss Lane for her very vivid description remember ladies
01:03:37and gentlemen crime does not pay this is the shadow saying goodbye until our next broadcast
