Profits are at a record high, but shares moved the other way.

After the Chuseok holiday, shares of Korea's two leading memory makers both fell more than 5%. At the same time, their combined third-quarter operating profit forecasts came to nearly 190 trillion won. Ahead of record earnings, the market stepped back first.

The market is looking past the last quarter, to the next one. One side says profits peak here. The other says there's a long way to go. That's the memory peak debate.

The first hint in that debate comes from a U.S. memory company. Its fiscal year ends a month earlier, so its report card captures the same market ahead of Korea's. Prices are still rising, and the memory space AI needs keeps growing. But the pace of increase is slowing little by little, and the chase from Chinese makers remains a variable.

Does a big number mean you can relax? Or is there something to check before the number?

Jubs lays out the gap between record earnings and falling shares as one story.

- Record profits, opposite stock move
- Why the peak debate now
- Is AI still hungry?
- The trap of a cheap-looking number
- What to watch before deciding
