00:00It was really just me in my bedroom, chipping away at this thing.
00:04Really?
00:05To a certain extent.
00:07I just want to emphasize that.
00:14I had already had this idea about obsession, and kind of exploring that as a theme,
00:21because I think that there's something about human behavior when you're obsessed with something that's to be studied.
00:28Imagine a person being obsessed with another person and how crazy that could get.
00:33And so that was actually an idea that I had had for a while.
00:35And then the Simpsons episode kind of just sparked that my way in to break into that story was through
00:42a wish.
00:43And then it kind of all clicked into place.
00:46Like, oh, I see.
00:47I could do this obsession idea by making it like a wish gone wrong type of film.
00:52I mean, the undertaking of editing a feature film was something I'd only done one time.
01:00Like, I've been editing my whole life, so I've kind of been preparing for it my whole life.
01:05But I've never edited a movie of this scale.
01:08So technically speaking, that was a pretty big undertaking, for sure.
01:12And especially, like, pretty much by myself, really, like, for example, in this next one, like, I have, like, an
01:20assistant editor.
01:21I have, like, a post supervisor.
01:23A lot of that stuff didn't come to me for this movie until it got picked up at TIFF.
01:28And then the ball started rolling a little quicker.
01:29But it was really just me in my bedroom chipping away at this thing, the scene where they're driving and
01:36she's talking about romance and love.
01:41And she's saying, like, hey, you know, you're the only person I can talk to about this stuff.
01:45That scene changed so much.
01:47There's probably, like, ten different versions of that scene.
01:50One that's a little longer, one that's shorter, one where she doesn't even say that line, one where he goes
01:56into a longer thing.
01:57Like, I don't know why, but that scene just has so many different versions of it.
02:00I can't speak for Nikki, but I, you know, I thought about that.
02:06And I'm thinking, you know, Bear's not, like, the ugliest guy.
02:11He said.
02:13You know, but I think confidence is key.
02:16And I think maybe he could have had a shot or at least, you know, maybe he could have, I
02:24mean, the outcome would have been a lot better for him.
02:27Let's just put it that way.
02:28I mean, I don't know.
02:29Well, I can tell you what wouldn't have happened is this movie.
02:32So.
02:33Exactly.
02:33Yeah.
02:34That's just not the film, you know.
02:36So.
02:36But that's a great question.
02:37I don't know.
02:37What do you think?
02:38What would have Nikki, how she would have responded to that?
02:41Seems like she wasn't into it.
02:42Well, long story short, because everything's from Bear's perspective, is Bear doesn't really know how Nikki feels.
02:46So me and Curry played with the idea of whenever we did certain takes, we played one where, like, she
02:50is super interested.
02:51We did another where he, she wasn't.
02:53And so in the editing process, kind of marrying those together to also see it from Bear's perspective of, like,
02:58how does she feel?
02:59So ultimately, because it is from Bear's perspective, we don't really know.
03:03But speaking as Nikki, I think that there's a little inclination of, like, you would treat me right.
03:07Really?
03:08To a certain extent.
03:11I just want to emphasize that.
03:12But, like, in the beginning, like, he's a good guy.
03:16What she really brought that I really appreciated was she brought a personality trait to the real Nikki that I
03:25did not anticipate.
03:26I mean, I had written Nikki as this really sweet girl next door, you know, kind of like the dream
03:33girl of any guy that's kind of like she's so sweet.
03:36She's got a heart of armor and just, you know, she gives money to the homeless person.
03:43And, you know, you can see that she's she's really got empathy.
03:47But what Indy brought was this, like, bro-y type of, like, sassiness to Nikki that I didn't anticipate but
04:01ended up working really well for the movie.
04:04Because it kind of emphasizes that Bear is totally in the friend zone.
04:09And so it really, like, she kind of brought this sassiness that surprised me.
04:13And I was like, oh, I love this.
04:15But then with the horror stuff, it was just a lot of conversations about what this movie is and what
04:22this movie is not.
04:23And really trying to show, we watched films together, like, certain references.
04:31Sometimes we would just watch clips of certain films.
04:35But I also showed her things that it wasn't.
04:37Like, I would purposely go out of my way to look up films and be like, this is not what
04:42we're doing.
04:43Because it's very specific what we were trying to do, you know.
04:45We didn't want it to feel so demon-possessed.
04:48We wanted it to feel like kind of a realistic situation, right?
04:55I think that that might be why this movie resonates so much with people.
04:59Because you can see yourself or, like, elements of people you know or just society through the relationships,
05:08the complicated relational dynamics in this movie.
05:11So I think not focusing on the lore of The One Wish Willow was really smart.
05:15And I like to tell Curry, it's like, hey, now you have sequels you can explore it with.
05:19But, you know, I do love, I'm reading some comments and things.
05:22Some of the things people are coming up with are crazy.
05:25And it really gets your mind going.
05:27Like, is it a demon from hell coming up?
05:30It's not demonic.
05:31I don't want to emphasize that.
05:33But, yeah.
05:33No, it's actually not.
05:35I didn't think about it when we were shooting.
05:36But you must have thought about it more, right?
05:38No, because Curry really nipped that in the butt in the very beginning of the process.
05:41It was not demonic.
05:42It wasn't a possession.
05:43It was a wish.
05:44And it was kind of like, for her, it was almost like this draw to him.
05:48I have this, like, veil that's over everything while the other Nikki is inside kind of peeping through that sheer
05:54material.
05:56But, yeah, it was never anything of that sort.
05:59But I'd love to hear where people are going with it.
06:02When you're writing a story like this, you have to kind of come up with, like, what's the craziest thing
06:08that could happen right now that still could, like, make sense for the story and not feel like it goes
06:12so far that, like, it doesn't feel silly.
06:17And the cat sandwich was the perfect, the perfect meal.
06:23There was only, like, one thing that I had to take out because it was too far.
06:30But other than that, they really let me do whatever I wanted.
06:33And I was kind of, like, shocked.
06:36Like, this movie really felt like a bunch of kids getting together and making something and, like, hoping that the
06:40parents don't come home.
06:41And, like, they never did.
06:42Like, nobody ever stopped us.
06:44And we just kept making the thing we wanted to make.
06:48Like, even the way we shot it, we thought someone was going to tell us we got to turn the
06:51lights on or that we, like, I was waiting for someone to tell us we have to move the camera
06:55more, like, get more coverage.
06:57And nobody did.
06:58They let me do what I want.
06:59And we were really happy about that.
07:02Well, Michael's a phenomenal voice actor.
07:03So I got a lot of tips and tricks from him about how to, like, preserve my voice and how
07:08to not lose it because, obviously, hitting octaves and warm-ups and, like, different things like that.
07:13I mean, we only did it, like, once or twice, which is kind of he would see that my voice
07:17is getting hoarse and he's so kind.
07:19He'd be like, hey, this tea's really great and this is really wonderful and, like, you should try this.
07:22So that really allowed me to kind of maintain not losing my voice with everything that I do in the
07:29film.
07:30But also, we just kind of went there.
07:33My goal for the film was kind of just I have an opportunity and I'm going to do everything humanly
07:38possible that I can that's within my wheelhouse and just have fun doing it.
07:44Have you decided, like, who was on the other line?
07:46Well, that was me.
07:47I don't know if you know that.
07:49It was you?
07:50Yeah, that's my voice.
07:51Yeah.
07:52Oh, that's crazy.
07:52Yeah, I know.
07:53But what is he doing there?
07:55I mean, he works for the One Wish Willow company.
08:01He kind of answers their phone calls.
08:04He handles the complaints of all the wishes.
08:08But there's no, I mean, I like to keep it pretty vague.
08:11I think you could think of it as, like, some sort of purgatory that she's being kept in, right?
08:17But, like, who knows?
08:18I think, personally, I think my personal interpretation was that she saw a lot of different things after a while.
08:26And so she kind of knows what's going on and she's just grieving.
08:29And obviously, grieving is different for everybody.
08:31But I think it's just starting her journey of grief.
08:33So she's, like, she has seen a lot of what's going on.
08:35She's not just coming from not knowing anything.
08:38Yeah.
08:38Oof, that sucks.
08:40Like, almost she saw it, but she didn't have any control over it.
08:43Like, she just had to walk it.
08:44I had the idea that, like, she gained strength over time.
08:47Like, she can fight with him.
08:48Or not him.
08:49She can fight with herself.
08:50And so in my interpretation of it, she starts to see through the veil later on versus in the beginning.
08:56It's more of a popping in and out of, like, wait, where was she?
08:58We played with the idea of the last place that she was as Nikki was the last place that she
09:03saw.
09:03So that's why she goes, wait, where are we?
09:05She probably goes to jail.
09:08She's probably going to prison for a very long time.
09:11There's also, like, a billion dollars in Ian's house and Ian's dead on the floor.
09:16So she's connected to that money in some way.
09:21Who knows what the cops are going to kind of put together as the story?
09:27But she's not going to have a very good life, I don't think.
09:31I mean, there's definitely movies that I want to do before moving on to another idea.
09:38But I really do.
09:39I think there's so much to be explored with The One Wish Will Owe.
09:44And I think I would be excited to do it again, yeah.
09:49I wish Nikki Freeman loved me more than anyone in the entire world.
