00:07sparked a growing nationwide protest in Spain, has died.
00:11She was aged 87.
00:14We regret to announce that Marie Carmen passed away today, the Madrid Sentence Union said
00:19in a statement on Wednesday, adding that her situation marked a turning point in the history of Spain.
00:25Her plight brought hundreds of thousands onto the streets and ultimately brought forward a general election
00:33after mass demonstrations across Spain.
00:36Abascal had been hospitalized since late September after being carried out on a stretcher from the apartment
00:42where she had lived for seven decades over her inability to afford rent increases.
00:48The company that owned the flat later offered to allow her to return at a lower rent rate,
00:54but she wasn't able to sign an agreement that she had been admitted to hospital.
00:59Her case led to the government to present measures to address Spain's housing crisis in legislation
01:05that was later rejected in Congress before tens of thousands of people took to the streets in recent days.
