00:00The left hemisphere would often make up a story about why the right hemisphere had done what
00:05it's done. And these were two hemispheres in the head of the same person. The human brain has two
00:11halves. Broadly, the left handles language. The right handles space and images. They talk to each
00:19other through a thick bundle of nerves, the corpus callosum. In rare cases of severe epilepsy,
00:25surgeons cut this bridge to stop seizures from spreading. Now each half mostly works on its own.
00:32Show a word, say walk, only to the right half of the brain. The patient stands up and walks.
00:40Ask them why. The left half, which controls speech, never saw the word. So it makes up a reason. I
00:47wanted some water and the person genuinely believes it. Yes, the brain is an evolutionary product.
00:53Please think again of a very healthy brain. There is somebody who is saying, you know,
01:00that is my ideology. That is my political belief. That is my religion. The biological system has
01:06nothing to do with all that. So brain and mind have a third variable in between called the ego.
01:13To the ego, everything is an object. The brain is an object to the ego. The ego will say,
01:20this is my book. That is my family. That is my nation. That is imagined, but is not there.
