When his daughter Janet (Virginia Grey) has any problems, dedicated dad Sam "Bigmouth" Smedley (Clem Bevans) immediately rushes to her side to provide whatever aid he can. Discovering that local tycoon Jonathan Smith (Cecil Kellaway) objects to her marrying into his family, Smedley uses a Native American rain dance to invoke a vengeful hurricane -- and it works! Once the storm clouds clear, Smith is gone. But now Smedley is in trouble with the police, who are skeptical of his magical powers.

00:38The Amalgamated Motors went up to points today.
00:41I'm out of the market.
00:43You're smart.
00:45What's the use?
00:46I made $90,000 from the oil well last year.
00:50What did I end up with?
00:53Taxes.
00:54You've got to support the government.
00:56Yeah.
00:57Buy them a deep good Indian necklace, boss.
01:01Why, you honorary ding-dong no-good Indians.
01:04I told you...
01:06You're giving the town a bad name.
01:09UGH.
01:10Sitting out here selling necklaces.
01:13The two richest men in the state.
01:15You got more than we got.
01:17Okay, then.
01:19Two of the richest men in the state.
01:20Sitting out here in them feathers and moccasins.
01:23Where you going, Sam?
01:25Going to Massachusetts to visit my granddaughter.
01:29Used to be my great-great-grandfather's summer place.
01:34What did?
01:35Massachusetts.
01:37We sold it to you folks.
01:39Cost too much to keep up.
01:42Hello, Johnny.
01:44Hello, Big Mouth.
01:45Will you sell me the bull when you get it all whittled out, huh, Big Mouth, huh?
01:48Johnny, how many times have I told you not to call your grandfather that awful name?
01:52What's wrong with Big Mouth?
01:53The Indians gave me that name because I could beller louder than any bug in your tribe.
01:58Big Mouth.
01:59Good, strong name.
02:01Ah, don't give me that cigar story Indian, brokenhead.
02:04Sorry, Keith.
02:05It slipped.
02:07That's all right.
02:07Oh, by the way, thanks for that check to the hospital fund.
02:10Ten thousand was a really generous contribution.
02:13You gave ten?
02:15Sure.
02:17I give ten.
02:19My secretary sends you a check in the morning.
02:21Thanks, Ronnie, dear.
02:23Ding-dong, and now I've got to give twenty.
02:25That's what I figured.
02:26Papa, what does ding-dong mean?
02:29It's a word I'm sadly reduced to by your mom.
02:31There comes my ding-dong train now.
02:33It's about time, too.
02:34I'm here.
02:35Where's it been?
02:36Now, don't anybody get excited.
02:38I'm just going to Massachusetts to visit my granddaughter.
02:41And I don't want anybody to make a fuss.
02:43Grandpa, don't shout.
02:45Who's shouting?
02:46Run in there.
02:47Get my grip out of the car, will you?
02:48What's it worth to you?
02:50Stupid.
02:50Okay.
02:54Now, Johnny, I want you to be a good boy and take real good care of your mom.
02:58Big Mouth, you have spoken the law.
03:07Ding-dong, Indian.
03:09He needs to a bitch like he needs a hole in his blanket.
03:13Oh, Grandpa, you're not going to take that old sack.
03:15Now, Kate, don't make a fuss.
03:17I've traveled with this thing too long to make a change now.
03:20But you promised me you'd take the suit, Kate.
03:22I said I'd bring it to the depot and that's as far as it's going.
03:25Oh, Sam, you are the most aggravated.
03:27I'm afraid I am.
03:28That's what your grandma always said.
03:30Oh, here's my train now.
03:31Goodbye, everybody.
03:33Bye, Big Mouth.
03:34Bye.
03:34Here you are, Porter.
03:36Now, Katie, don't you and Johnny worry about me.
03:39I'll be all right.
03:41Send your postcard as soon as you get there.
03:43And I'll have the boat finished for Johnny.
03:45Goodbye, now.
03:46Take care of yourselves.
03:48Big Mouth.
04:00Have a jelly bean.
04:02No, thank you.
04:05I'm going to Pilgrim Hill, Marsh.
04:07Are you?
04:08Yep, Pilgrim Hill, Marsh.
04:10My little granddaughter lives there.
04:12Indeed.
04:13A fellow named Jonathan Smith seems to be the big noise in Pilgrim Hill.
04:17Runs the whole place.
04:19Ever hear of him?
04:20No.
04:21Yeah.
04:22Seems to be Smith that's making my little granddaughter unhappy.
04:26She's married to a real nice young brother.
04:29Tom Adams.
04:31Lawyer.
04:32Hey, are you listening?
04:34Oh, yes.
04:36Where's what I'm going?
04:37He's just straightened out.
04:39Who does Jonathan Smith think he is?
04:41Making my little granddaughter unhappy.
04:43I'll tell him where to get off.
04:44I can tell you that right now.
04:46No, I've got to say I ain't anointing.
04:48Oh, no.
04:50Well, I don't want to talk you to death anyway.
04:52I'll just relax and figure out tomorrow's plans.
04:57I think you'll...
05:09You think you'll recognize him?
05:10Oh, after all, it's only been four years.
05:13And people who've met grandfather even for two seconds never forget him.
05:16Impressive, eh?
05:17That's the general idea I got of him.
05:19Look, Tom, Sam's a darling and I do love him, but, well, Eastern people might not understand him.
05:27Oh, people are people.
05:28Oh, but Sam's pretty special.
05:30We'll give him full honor.
05:34What do you mean?
05:35He's going to get the full A number one treatment.
05:38Tom, what do you mean?
05:41Jonathan, the great Smith, is going to be on hand.
05:44Oh, no.
05:45I thought that'd surprise you.
05:47Oh, it's a curiousy effect that the first man in a woman's life has on her.
05:52Even now, I still love you.
05:57What's the matter, dear?
05:58Tom, you were kidding, weren't you?
06:01Jonathan Smith isn't really going to be here.
06:03Well, of course he is.
06:05We'll head him off, trip him, anything.
06:07Only keep him off this platform until we get Sam home.
06:10Janet, have you gone mad?
06:12Look, Tom, trains excite Sam.
06:14He's still calling them the Iron Horse.
06:18You're exaggerating.
06:19You'll see you and Mr. Interfering Smith.
06:22Somebody might hear you.
06:24Well, I don't care if they do.
06:25Whose idea was it that he should be here?
06:27Why, Mr. Smith offered.
06:29Exactly.
06:30Coming down to look my grandfather over.
06:34Well, I can hardly tell my most important client not...
06:37Your most important client.
06:39The way you and the rest of the people in this town bow down to Jonathan Smith is positively
06:43sickening.
06:44Now, how did we get started on this?
06:46Because people excite Sam.
06:48People excite Sam.
06:50Trains excite Sam.
06:51What...
06:52What doesn't excite Sam?
06:54You know, I can't think of a single thing.
07:01Morning, Adams.
07:02Janet, my dear.
07:03Good morning, Mr. Smith.
07:04Morning.
07:05Oh, young lady, I suppose you're very happy.
07:07Oh, very.
07:09It always gives me great pleasure to receive a newcomer into our peaceful cultural surroundings
07:13here at Pilgrim Hill.
07:14Especially my own attorney's family.
07:17It was good of you to come down, sir.
07:19Oh, we do what we can.
07:20We do what we can.
07:23Very accurate.
07:25Presented to me by John Ellsworth.
07:27You know he was my attorney for many years.
07:30Splendid attorney.
07:32I'm so very grateful.
07:52Turn back.
07:53Stand back, my dear.
07:53Adam, perhaps you're going to fail on the side of me.
08:09Why, you bunch of crooks!
08:12You thieves!
08:14Robbers!
08:16Sheep herders!
08:17What's the rules, sir?
08:19I don't care nothing about the rules.
08:21Poker!
08:23You're in for them tin horns.
08:24Hambling is illegal on the train.
08:26Illegal!
08:27It won't illegal till I held this straight place.
08:30Why didn't you enforce it before?
08:32But Mr. Jonathan Smith insists that we enforce the rules within the incorporated village of Pilgrim Hill.
08:39Pilgrim Hill!
08:41Pilgrim Hill!
08:42Why, for two bits I'd buy this ding-dong railroad, I'd tear up the tracks and I'd run it around
08:48the top!
08:48You want...
08:49Dennis!
08:51Baby!
08:53That...
08:54is...
08:54is your Grandfather.
08:56Here, sir.
08:57Take care of that, and be sure this seller don't chisel somewhere that way from you.
09:04Grandpa!
09:04Pa!
09:06Funny girl, you drove into the prettiest thing I've ever seen.
09:09How?
09:10Here, Bob.
09:11Take care of them things.
09:14Bring your butler down to the depot just to impress your old grandpappy, eh?
09:19That's pretty good.
09:21This must be Tom.
09:23Yep, I recognize you from your picture.
09:26Son, I'm mighty happy to meet you.
09:28Well, what are you standing there for, Bob?
09:30Get them things out the car.
09:32Sam, this is Mr. Jock.
09:34Son, you never call a butler mister.
09:37It's either Jeeves or Meadows or whatever his handle is.
09:40And look at my little girl.
09:43Anything cooking, honey?
09:45You figuring on making me a great grandpappy real soon?
09:49Sir, I am.
09:50You don't have to serve me, Bob.
09:52It's plain Sam Smittley or Big Mouth if you're part Indian.
09:57Come on, honey, let's get out of here.
09:58You can't hang around the depot all day.
10:01Well, hop that bag along, Bob.
10:03We ain't got all day.
10:06Where?
10:07I'm sorry, Mr. Smith.
10:08I'm sure he'll apologize when he realizes...
10:10Go!
10:11Go!
10:17What are you laughing at?
10:18I'm laughing at him.
10:20I'm laughing at you, too.
10:23You're all right, son.
10:24Let's get out of here.
10:32Hey, what happened to that butler fellow?
10:34You make him walk, eh?
10:35Sam, darling, that wasn't the butler.
10:37That was Mr. Jonathan Huntoon Smith.
10:41You know, I kind of figured out that's who it was.
10:44You knew?
10:45Sure.
10:46Always believed in getting in the first row.
10:50Have some jelly beans?
10:52Good heavens, no.
10:57Well, say, honey, this is Jim Dandy.
11:00Yes, sir.
11:02A little cramped but not bad.
11:04The fellow couldn't do much of his rope throwing in here.
11:07This house happens to be 150 years old.
11:10Oh, you don't need to apologize about that to me, son.
11:13It's a roof over your head, ain't it?
11:15I think I'd better go see Mr. Smith.
11:17He's also our neighbor.
11:19Lives right next door.
11:21Oh, you don't have to worry about him, son.
11:23We'll eliminate him in good time.
11:26You know, Janet, I ain't had a wink of sleep in two nights.
11:30Oh, you poor thing.
11:31Couldn't you get a berth?
11:33Can't play poker in a berth.
11:35On the train, I met some fellows who had invented a new way of dealing from the bottom.
11:39That is, they thought they'd invented a new way of dealing from the bottom.
11:44They found out.
11:46Well, I'll just stretch down here on the couch and grab off 40 winks.
11:50Don't you want to go to your room?
11:53Prefer.
11:54I ain't been bad, have I?
11:57No, honey, you just go ahead whatever you expect to do,
12:00and I'll stretch down here and dope out some plans.
12:04All right, Sam.
12:05Yeah, I'll be all right.
12:09Janet.
12:11Yes, Sam?
12:12Come here and sit down with your granddaddy.
12:18What's the trouble, daughter?
12:20That big ox been mistreating you?
12:22Of course not.
12:23Well, your letters to Catherine don't sound like a happy girl.
12:25What is it?
12:27Oh, I don't know.
12:28Everything, I guess.
12:30Smith?
12:31Partly.
12:32Oh, Sam, no woman likes to see her husband cater to another man, no matter how rich he is.
12:37No.
12:38Say, who is that young fellow at the depot?
12:40The one who's doing all the laughing?
12:42Oh, Steve Terhune.
12:43He does odd jobs, repairs.
12:45He's a good mechanic, too, but nobody will trade with him anymore.
12:49Why not?
12:50Mr. Smith doesn't like him.
12:52You see, he's in love with Debbie, Smith's daughter.
12:55Uh-huh.
12:56The boy makes an honest living, don't he?
12:58Sure.
13:00You know, honey, I'm beginning to think I don't like this, Mr. Smith.
13:04Oh, now, Sam, please don't...
13:05Now, granddaughter, don't you go trying to teach your old granddaddy to suck eggs.
13:10Though just why anyone would want to teach a nice old gentleman like me such a revolting habit,
13:16it's something I've never been able to find out.
13:18Where?
13:19Here.
13:31Where?
13:42Here.
13:43Here.
13:45Here.
13:46Here.inguém
13:56Don't ever do that again you're doing it wrong yeah
14:07a job for though comes back to balance tell that just for looking at it perhaps you'd care to show
14:13me how to drive a golf ball sure golf isn't as easy as it looks it's all a matter of
14:18concentration
14:19keep your left arm straight swing back slowly shift your weight and then snap the wrist the
14:26moment of impact and I used to hit the ball on it yeah get it as far as you can
14:30all right
14:31son just downside great scout right through the canvas I'm sorry Sean I held back with
14:51not enough I guess I'll fix that whole first chance to get she landed yet clear over to
14:57Smith's and still on the carry you stay here I'll go fetch it no you can't do that why
15:09not well that's mr. Smith's property no one's allowed on there without permission he's kind
15:14of a snob ain't he what think so no you wouldn't because if you don't watch your step you're
15:20going to turn into one yourself now mr. Smedley son you're waiting around up to your neck in
15:25a lot of manners dead folks used to use we have our ways and we like them tradition is a
15:30fine
15:30thing but you've got to take it easy it's all right for a fella to wear one of them little
15:35white
15:35ties and tail coats if he wants to but if he gets in a sweat and swimming about it you
15:41know what will
15:41happen what your color will work I'm going to take a walk maybe I'd better go along with you no
15:49son
15:50you stay here and practice your golf I'm going down yander and take a look at that ocean I've never
15:56seen one
16:06tell me his name and I'll shoot him down like a dog
16:19have a jelly bean any varmint that would make a pretty girl like you cry like that just don't
16:29deserve to live what's his name Steve Steve Terhume you're Debbie Smith don't seem possible old
16:39Smith ain't human enough I'll bet you're Janet's grandfather aren't you yep I've heard of you
16:45okay why don't you and this Terhume fella just up run off and get married when you want to talk
16:51about a subject you really start right in the middle don't you get him in the middle Smedley that's what
16:55they always called me but why don't you run off well I'm willing but Steve won't seems to think I
17:03couldn't be happy if I left here he's crazy I'd be happy anyplace with him dear me things around
17:11here sure need to stir enough don't they you can say that again hmm I could but it won't
17:26you'll be hearing from me I hope so you know if this was 40 year ago I think I'd teach
17:37that young
17:37to whom for a rest myself you know if this was 40 years ago I think I'd watch to
18:17you know if you look at me Bob yeah that's good I think but it's wonderful to Heil
18:38Who, who, who did that? Who did, who, who did this?
18:45Oh, Sultanah.
18:46But it's kind of hard for a girl to make a pot look small in a town where he's been
18:49top dog for so long.
18:51Well, that's her side of it. I've got mine.
18:53Well, you know, sometimes folks can get together and talk it over.
18:56I'm not even allowed on the place.
18:58Yeah, fix your window, can't she?
18:59Yes, I guess so.
19:01Well, now, uh, if I break a window, I've got to pay for it.
19:05And if I've got to pay for it, I'm picking out the fellow that's going to fix it.
19:08Listen, mister. Smith runs this town. If you break his window, he'll...
19:12Wrong word, son. Broke. Have broke. He'll be along soon.
19:18I carefully asked four or five fellows where your place was so he'd know where to find me.
19:22Oh, brother.
19:23Just a sample of my kind of planning.
19:26What'd I tell you? Here he comes now.
19:29Wonder who that fellow is with him.
19:31The sheriff, you'd better tell me what brand of tobacco you smoke.
19:34I'll send you a carton every week.
19:36Yeah.
19:40Have a look.
19:41Arrest that man.
19:43By the powers invested me, a sheriff is Honeysuckle County.
19:46I arrest you.
19:46Get out of here, you doggone promise. You ain't arrest nobody.
19:49Come on, come on.
19:49Now, come on, come on.
19:50I'll have to fight back in Wyoming. I'll screw you up.
19:53No argument.
19:54Get away from that gal down your hiding.
19:55I'm sorry to be late, Mr. Smith. I came over as quickly as I could.
19:58What's up?
19:58I'm placing Smith where he belongs.
20:00Sam, what did you do?
20:01Never mind what I did.
20:03I never thought I'd find you on the side of the enemy.
20:05Arnold, make the arrest.
20:07Just a moment.
20:08What's the charge?
20:09Whose lawyer are you, Adams?
20:11Well, I work for you on a yearly retainer.
20:13But when it comes to putting my family in jail, I'm on the other side of the fence.
20:17You hear that, Sheriff?
20:18There's good stuff in that boy once you scrape off the crust.
20:21Be quiet.
20:22Mr. Smith, what's the charge?
20:24Assault and battery.
20:24Well, there can hardly be assault because a man accidentally hits a golf ball too far.
20:28Oh, man, his age can't hit a ball that far.
20:31He used a gun of some kind.
20:32That's perfectly ridiculous.
20:33It's what he did.
20:34I saw him sighting down the barrel of it.
20:36Mr. Smith, as your attorney, I've got to warn you that a suit for false arrest can be very expensive.
20:40Well, you're not, my lawyer, as of this minute.
20:44Very well.
20:45I fixed that.
20:47Sheriff, you'd better get Mr. Smith to sign a complaint.
20:50Otherwise, the suit for false arrest can be directed against you.
20:54Is that okay with you, Mr. Smith?
20:56No, I'm not signing anything.
20:58Well, I can't make an arrest on a violation I didn't see unless there is a complaint.
21:03Of course, we're perfectly willing to pay for the accident.
21:06Sure, pay for anything we break.
21:08That's me, cash on the mine smuggling.
21:10Shut up.
21:11I can do that, too.
21:12Well, Mr. Smith?
21:13All right.
21:14I have a glazier, and I'll send you the bill.
21:16You will not.
21:18If I'm paying for it, I'll pick out the boy that's going to do the work.
21:21Steve, go out there and fix that window.
21:22He will not.
21:23This man is not allowed on my property.
21:24I demand that you send to Boston for a glazier.
21:27There ain't nothing in the law that says I've got to.
21:29Ain't that right, Sheriff?
21:30The man's right, Mr. Smith.
21:32He admits the damages, and he's willing to pay for it.
21:34There's nothing that says Steve can't fix your window.
21:36Yes, sir.
21:37It's either that or you pay for it yourself.
21:40All right.
21:41Send him out.
21:42But you stay outside the house.
21:44Okay.
21:45I'll do the best I can that way.
21:46Come on, Sheriff.
21:48Well, I guess I'll mosey along.
21:50No, no!
21:51You're coming home with me and stay there.
21:53You've caused enough trouble for one day.
21:58Son, don't ever get married.
22:00If you do get married, don't have children.
22:03If you do have children, don't have grandchildren.
22:07If you do have grandchildren, disown them!
22:11Before they go up and marry some crook that'll misjudge you.
22:19Yes, sir, E. Bob, my ginger.
22:22He talked right up to that old cuss.
22:24I wanted to tell you.
22:25He told old Smith just about where he could get off at.
22:28Did you, Tom?
22:29Yes, like a fool.
22:31Boy, you're a good lawyer.
22:34And old Smith ain't the only client in the world.
22:36No, but he's the most important one in this town.
22:38That's true, Grandpa.
22:40I thought you didn't like him.
22:41I don't.
22:42But after all, I don't want to do anything to jeopardize Tom's career.
22:46Well, what's done is done.
22:50Tom?
22:51Yes?
22:54I love you.
22:55Well, I love you, too.
22:56But if I'd known four years ago what your family was like, I'd...
23:00I'd...
23:02I'd still have married you.
23:04Ah.
23:09Now you see what I've done.
23:10If it hadn't been for me, you two would never...
23:12Grandpa!
23:13Be quiet!
23:14Yes, do!
23:19Everybody says that to me.
23:21I wonder why.
23:39Good morning, Grandfather.
23:42I remembered that you got up early.
23:45We always get up early, too, don't we, dear?
23:47Yeah.
23:48Nothing like it.
23:49Clean, fresh morning air.
23:53Breakfast is ready.
23:54I don't want any breakfast now.
23:56I'll go and take a walk while you folks eat.
23:58Good.
23:59We'll go with you.
24:00We always go for a long walk in the morning, don't we, dear?
24:02Sure.
24:03Nothing like it.
24:04Clean, fresh walk.
24:05Yeah.
24:06Well, I like to run a minor so far I eat my breakfast.
24:08So do we.
24:10Okay.
24:11I can see we ain't get no breaks.
24:13We might as well go and eat.
24:15Ding, dong, these sinners.
24:17I have to come all the way to Massachusetts to be told when I can get up out of bed
24:20and go out.
24:33And if only you weren't such a stubborn mule.
24:35And if only you weren't such a sneaky little type.
24:41I hate this darn game.
24:43Makes me sick.
24:44What are we out here for anyway?
24:45We came out to get evidence on how far you can hit a golf ball.
24:48Just in case Mr. Smith changes his mind about suing you for breaking his window.
24:54Well, what are you so dang nervous about?
24:56Well, there are a few rules.
24:58No talking on the teeth.
24:59And no profanity on the golf course.
25:01Or the Board of Governors will dismiss you just as quickly for that as they would if they caught you
25:05stealing.
25:06Stealing.
25:07Thunderation.
25:08The next thing I know you'll be accusing me of smoking cigarettes.
25:11I'm going home.
25:12Oh, Sam.
25:13I'm going home.
25:14I'm in disgrace to you.
25:16Stealing.
25:16Now nobody accused you of stealing.
25:19Your honor, darling.
25:37Now, didn't she hit that putty?
25:41Say, you shouldn't let a girl in her condition swing like that.
25:44But Janet isn't.
25:46She's not.
25:46No.
25:47Then what's she getting so darn moody with me for?
25:49Sure.
25:50You take your cut next, son.
26:07Has he gone mad?
26:09Nope.
26:09I taught him my charity shift.
26:11You ain't got it quite right, son.
26:13You zig twice before you zag.
26:20The best shot you've ever made in your life.
26:23Oh, Sam, you have to show me how to do that.
26:25Paid for ladies for obvious reasons.
26:28Mr. Smith.
26:29Uh, Adams, uh, you don't mind letting us play through, do you?
26:33I have an important business appointment.
26:35Well, not at all, Mr. Smith.
26:36Uh, Janet and I have already hit, but you go right ahead.
26:39Uh, certainly, Mr. Smith, you go right ahead.
26:40We're in no hurry.
26:41As a matter of fact, we like to play slowly.
26:44I don't.
26:45You don't what?
26:46I don't like to play slowly.
26:48As a matter of fact, I think we'll play faster than you will.
26:50I see.
26:50I'm sorry.
26:51I didn't know there were any objections.
26:53There are.
26:54Very well.
26:57I must say, Adams, your choice of guest is most unfortunate.
27:01Low as our standards are.
27:02There is a limit.
27:04Mr. Smith, you must remember that you're speaking of my family.
27:07I don't like your tone, Adams.
27:09Quiet!
27:10First rule is no talking on the key.
27:12I shall take this matter up with our board of governors.
27:15Just as you wish.
27:15It's obvious, Mr. Smith, what action your board of governors will take.
27:20Janet and I will resign whenever you wish.
27:28Son, I've been thinking it over.
27:30Since these thugs are only a twosome, we'll be holding them up all the way around.
27:33Let them go through.
27:35Smell his breath.
27:38My boy, a man don't have to be drunk to indulge in a little common courtesy.
27:44Though sometimes it helps.
27:49Just a minute there, Smith.
27:51Who spoke?
27:53You know ding-dong where who spoke.
27:56Where'd you get that ball?
27:57No business of yours.
27:58It's mine.
27:59Let me see it.
28:02Tom Adams, there's still right here.
28:04Smith, looks like you're a ball thief.
28:08There must be some mistake.
28:09Think so?
28:10Son, how many balls you got in that bag?
28:14Six.
28:15There's only three, Mr. Adams.
28:16I just looked.
28:18Catch a man with a horse that ain't his, he's a horse safe.
28:21Smith here is a ball safe.
28:24It's the law of the range.
28:26There's a likely looking tree over here.
28:28Sam.
28:29All right, we won't take the law into our own hands.
28:33But you can tell this to your board of governors.
28:35Just a minute.
28:35Sam, how many balls did you accidentally hit over toward Mr. Smith's house?
28:39Ah, son, you spoiled it all.
28:44Of course, that's it.
28:46I put them in my pocket and forgot to return them to you.
28:49It's quite understandable.
28:50It's very nice of you to take it that way.
28:55Just a minute, Smith.
29:02One more.
29:07Extraordinary.
29:11Just when I had them sewed up as tight as a drum.
29:14Son, you're so pure as disgusting.
29:19Well, play ball.
29:30Now, can I drive?
29:32Well, you better wait.
29:33You might hit them.
29:34Well, they're on the green.
29:36No.
29:37Tom, it's 350 yards.
29:39Yeah.
29:40Even I couldn't drive that far.
30:03Oh.
30:10Them Cherokees never knew their own strength.
30:12Let's get out of here.
30:13We've certainly established the evidence.
30:15Come on.
30:15Hey, I thought we were going to play golf.
30:18Oh, Martha, we'll have our coffee in the living room.
30:21Yeah, coffee in the living room.
30:23I've heard of traveling to a meal,
30:24but I've never heard of traveling through it.
30:26Hey, Martha, never mind sitting at the table for breakfast.
30:30Just toss it at us as we circle around.
30:34Your grandfather makes funny jokes.
30:36You really think so?
30:37No.
30:39I'll get it.
30:43You know, son, you're improving every minute.
30:46Just keep it up, and the first thing you know, you'll be like me.
30:50I'd cut my throat first.
30:52Good evening, my dear.
30:52Is that really young husband of yours home?
30:54Uh, yes.
30:55Won't you come in?
30:56Ah, there you are, Adams.
30:58A little problem has come up that I need your advice on.
31:01Mr. Smith, are you telling me that I still represent you?
31:04Of course, my boy, of course.
31:06You must have misunderstood me.
31:07A man often says in temper what he doesn't mean.
31:10Not me.
31:10I never lose my temper.
31:12That's why they call me Easygoing Smedley.
31:14Oh.
31:15Oh.
31:16Yes, that's very interesting.
31:17Now, Adams, about that...
31:19Just a moment.
31:19Yes?
31:20Don't call me Adams.
31:22Oh, dear boy, I didn't know it offended you.
31:24Thomas?
31:25That'll be satisfactory.
31:27Thomas, it will be.
31:29Now, about that beachfront.
31:30I've watched that.
31:31I think if we go at it right, we can get it re-zoned.
31:34Thomas, my boy, it's a positive pleasure to do business with you.
31:37Uh, Mr. Smith, I do hope Grandfather's drive didn't hurt you.
31:41No, no, no.
31:42Of course not.
31:43Accidents will happen.
31:45Uh, by the way, that reminds me, Mr. Smedley, you must teach me how to hit a golf ball like
31:50that.
31:50All my life I wanted to drive that first green.
31:53I won't do it.
31:55What?
31:56I won't teach this fellow my Cherokee shift.
31:59But, uh, why not?
32:01Uh, after all, your grandson and I have business associates and we're good friends.
32:05Won't teach nobody who's standing the way of true love.
32:09Sam, that's none of your business.
32:10Well, I'm made in my business.
32:12Why do you suppose they call me Nosy Smedley?
32:15Uh, we'll just forget about that.
32:16Steve Tahoon will never marry my daughter.
32:18And you'll never drive the first green.
32:20Well, after all, he does have a point, Sam.
32:23Steve and Debbie do have different backgrounds.
32:25Background?
32:26I'm surprised at you.
32:28What background you got?
32:29We all lived in a shack until some crazy fool struck oil in the front yard.
32:34When the young fellow got backbone, he don't need no background.
32:38And what background have I got?
32:40I'm ashamed of myself.
32:42No, Mr. Smedley, why should you be?
32:46And what background have you got?
32:49A pair of my Indian friends told me about a Jonathan Smith way back
32:52who used to sell the tribes wooden nutmegs.
32:56Nevertheless, Steve Tahoon will never marry my daughter.
32:59Why, there's a breath of life in my body.
33:01That so?
33:02It is.
33:04All right, Bob.
33:05I'll tell you what I'm going to do.
33:07I'm going to teach you to hit a golf ball.
33:10Sam, what are you up to?
33:12Nothing.
33:13Nothing at all.
33:14I'm going to teach this fellow the genuine Cherokee shift.
33:17But at my time and my place.
33:20Well, that's fair enough.
33:21I understand you own a little summer home on an island just off the coast.
33:25Kiwi Island.
33:25Yes, I own it.
33:26Yeah, I'll meet you there tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
33:28Oh, but surely the golf course is the logical place.
33:32Nope.
33:33It calls for a wiggle and a waggle, and it ain't no good in public until you get it right.
33:37You meet at my time, where I say, or not at all.
33:42Well, I...
33:43Depends on how bad you want to drive that first green.
33:47Well, I wanted to go out there tomorrow morning anyhow.
33:50All right.
33:51I'll meet you there.
33:53It's a deal.
33:55I'll tell the launchman to be ready for you.
33:57You needn't bother.
33:59But how would we get out there?
34:00I'll paddle my own canoe.
34:02Granddaughter, any other rules we need to eat in?
34:05Let's go in the kitchen and have our coffee.
34:07Good.
34:07Then I'll go to bed and grab some sleep.
34:10You know, golf lessons take it out of a fellow.
34:14Kiwi Island.
34:15Shouldn't be hard to find.
34:17Good night, everybody.
34:18You know, tomorrow's gonna be a mighty interesting day.
34:40What are you doing?
34:42I'm conjuring up a hurricane.
34:43No man can conjure up a hurricane.
34:45That's what I thought myself for one day I was out on the prairie with Singin' Wolf.
34:49Biggest medicine man in the Ramapu tribe.
34:51Who's ever hear of him?
34:52Can't say that I have.
34:54Eh, you wish, nurse.
34:55What's there one day Singin' Wolf put on this dance and up come the biggest bro you ever see?
35:00Stand aside, please.
35:10I don't care how much that wolf sank.
35:12No man can conjure up a hurricane.
35:14Eh, I don't seem to have much success.
35:18That's because it can't be done.
35:19Eh, nobody can say I didn't try.
35:23And Singin' Wolf told me that thing was foolproof.
35:27Why did you want a hurricane anyway?
35:30Jonathan Smith's out on Kiwi Island.
35:32But a big storm would wash right over Kiwi.
35:34That's the idea.
35:36Jonathan himself told me he'd never let Debbie and Steve marry as long as he was alive.
35:42There's only one thing to do.
35:43You Western fellas think awfully direct.
35:45He'd give me the idea himself.
35:48Bro!
35:49Ding-dong you bro!
35:52You're lucky it doesn't work.
35:54How come?
35:55I'd have to arrest you for manslaughter.
35:56Heh, couldn't prove nothin'.
35:58Oh, I know something about conjuring.
36:00No!
36:01My great-great-aunt, Ed Zippo, on my father's side was a witch.
36:05You don't say!
36:06Yep, lived over Salem way.
36:07They convicted her.
36:08But at the last minute she escaped.
36:10How'd she do that?
36:11Flew right out the courthouse window.
36:23I was ordered to work outside.
36:25I wouldn't keep a dog out in a storm like this.
36:28Some guys would leave on a crack like that.
36:30Not me.
36:31You know I think you're like me just because of my television set.
36:34And now for your weather report.
36:36Good evening.
36:38And now for your weather report.
36:41The storm I mentioned last night, that's due tonight, is here.
36:46The weather point lies about 180 degrees off the east coast with the intensity of a hurricane.
36:56Well, it's in a hurry anyhow.
36:58That storm's been switching back and forth for a week.
37:01It's gonna be a beauty.
37:02Mm-hmm.
37:08Hadn't you better get started for Kiwi?
37:10Yeah, I reckon so.
37:17Sam, what did you mean about Smith's ancestors selling wooden nutmegs?
37:22Oh, that's an old Yankee trick.
37:24They used to carve them out of wood and sell them for the real thing.
37:27And if this fellow Smith ain't one of them sharp-trading Yankees, I never seen one.
37:32Some storm.
37:35Ding-dong treacherous and redskins.
37:37You better run along.
37:39Yeah.
37:46Oh!
37:47Here she comes!
37:49Look at them dark cows up there!
37:53Hey!
37:54I knew my friends wouldn't give me a bum steer.
37:57Look, if it's gonna be that rough, you better not go.
37:59You're no sailor.
38:00Well, find a gun!
38:04I'm gonna tell Debbie and see if they can get married.
38:09Debbie!
38:10Debbie!
38:10I've got great news for you!
38:12I've got...
38:13Are you still here?
38:15How long does it take to fix a window?
38:16There were interruptions.
38:17Yeah.
38:18Well, I've got great news for the both of you.
38:20By the morning or late tonight, it'll be okay for you two to get married.
38:23What are you talking about?
38:25It's all fixed.
38:26And by who?
38:27You don't believe me, do you?
38:28We don't.
38:29Do you know where your father is?
38:30No.
38:30He took his golf clubs this morning.
38:32It was kind of secretive about where he was going.
38:34I guess he's at the clubs.
38:35Club my eye right this minute, he's out on Kiwi Island.
38:38Father is?
38:39Sure.
38:40Sure.
38:41Pretty slick, ain't it?
38:41Sam, are you sure he's there?
38:43Sure, I'm sure.
38:44I'm the gazebo who lured him out there.
38:45You old maniac.
38:47Well, that's a fine way to talk to me.
38:48I thought you two kids would receive the good news with joy and shouting.
38:51I'll call Captain Ben and get him to go out.
38:52No, I figured that one out, too.
38:54Nobody in this town would risk their life to save old man Smith.
38:57Oh.
38:58Well, you're the most horrible, awful, savage old-
39:00Now, Debbie, hold on just a minute until you hear the whole plan.
39:03Steve's got to go out there and save him.
39:05You get it?
39:06Do you know what a hurricane is?
39:07Sure, I've been through lots of them.
39:09All you do is crawl in the hole until it blows over.
39:11But this is on water.
39:13I've been stirring that.
39:14Ocean's the same as the prairie.
39:16Except for the waves.
39:18Steve will be risking his life.
39:19I know that, too, honey.
39:20But that's a risk we've just got to take.
39:23Miss Debbie!
39:25Miss Debbie, your father is-
39:26What do we know?
39:27Sam Smedley, I'm arresting you under charge of manslaughter.
39:29Oh, now, wait a minute.
39:31Maybe he did get Dad to go out there,
39:32but he couldn't have known the storm was going to hit.
39:34Why, he started the storm.
39:35I saw him with my own eyes.
39:36Oh, no man can start a hurricane.
39:38Besides, Steve said this one's been playing around off the south coast for a week.
39:41Yeah, you're about to think you know everything.
39:43Steve went to get Captain Ben.
39:45There's an awful lot of storm out there.
39:47I call Captain Ben, Dent, and Perry.
39:50Not one of them would agree to put out in the storm.
39:51See what I told you?
39:52Looks like it's up to you, son.
39:54Perry agreed to lend me his boat.
39:55Well, I'm going with you.
39:56No, you're not. You're staying right here.
39:57You're not going.
39:58Look, if you can go, I can go.
39:59Now, looky here, honey.
40:00I don't think I remember how to turn this hurricane off.
40:03No, Debbie.
40:04That's it, son.
40:05All you've got to do is to go out there and be a hero,
40:07and we'll have a nice hot drink waiting for you when you come back.
40:09I've got news for you.
40:11I ain't got no time to hear it.
40:12You're going with me. I'll need help in the boat.
40:14Why, boy, you wouldn't want me to go out there and wrap you of all your glory, would you?
40:19Mom, we have no time to argue.
40:20And I'm going to.
40:21No, you're not. You're staying right here.
40:22No time, darling.
40:23Well, who's on here?
40:24Jump!
40:25Hold that ding-dong, Jack Spiro.
40:28What kind of receiver do you think you are?
40:30Jump!
40:33You and Debbie go below.
40:35Below!
40:37You're still wet down there.
40:38Below! Below! Downstairs!
40:40Below!
40:42Never, never!
40:50What's that?
40:51Steve started the end.
41:04I've got to get up there and help them.
41:05Oh, no, you don't.
41:06You sit right down here.
41:08He'll yell if he needs you.
41:09Out on the border, they call me Sam Smedley, the volunteer.
41:19Anything I can do to help you, Sean?
41:22It's getting rougher.
41:23I don't want to get washed over.
41:24Hand me that line.
41:29Here, take the other end and tie it around something secure.
41:31Two eyes.
41:32What?
41:33Two eyes.
41:33Quicker than share in my eyes.
41:43Wait.
41:44It's already taken off.
41:51Hey!
41:52Where are you going?
41:53Leave the wind to rest on my dish.
41:55I should milk me, son.
42:04Whoa!
42:05Whoa!
42:05Bet you get out.
42:07Bigger than you get out.
42:08What kind of a semen are you?
42:10You could be shot for leaving the wheel of a storm.
42:12Get below!
42:13I don't think I can trust you alone up here.
42:15Get below!
42:16God, God, these sinners.
42:18I haven't asked somebody when I can get up.
42:19When I can go to bed and when I can eat my breakfast.
42:26He went away and left the wheel.
42:28Honey, it's a good thing you got me here with you.
42:30Sam, it's a favor to me.
42:31Will you sit down beside me?
42:32No, I won't.
42:33I can't run this critter in a second.
42:35I can see where I'm going.
42:41Oh, will you lie down and be quiet?
42:44Sam, this is mutiny.
42:45Lie down.
42:46I've got to get up there and help see.
42:47You stay right here.
42:50We're almost to Kiwi.
42:51Come on up to grab Mr. Smith.
42:53See what I told you?
43:24Where have you been?
43:26When I make a date, I've never made.
43:28That's why they call me Johnny on the spot slightly.
43:31You'll get him below.
43:32Yeah, he means downstairs.
43:40Oh, Sterling, you're safe.
43:42Oh, here, Sterling.
43:45You mean to say you love him after what he did to you and Steve?
43:48He's my father.
43:49That don't give him no call to act like a tyrant.
43:51Oh, you hush up.
43:52He's exhausted.
43:54Try and make father some tea, will you?
43:56I'm going to go out and tell Steve.
43:56Have I got to cook for that old rattlesnake?
43:58Do as you're told.
44:04You know, Sterling, I felt that somehow you knew that storm was coming when you arranged to meet me at
44:11the island.
44:12About time somebody around here appreciates my talent, then you, you admit it.
44:16Sure, I admit it.
44:17You gave me the idea yourself.
44:19I did?
44:20You told me that Steve couldn't marry Debbie as long as you were alive.
44:24So there was nothing else to do but kill you.
44:25Do you mean to say that you, you actually planned to, to do away with me?
44:31Don't gawk over words, Bob.
44:33Look, what I meant to do was kill you.
44:35Pure and simple, kill you.
44:39Bless my soul.
44:40I wouldn't do that here.
44:50What do I know about cooking on that ding-dong thing?
44:54Here.
44:55Take a look at this.
44:56That'll warm me up.
44:57You won't mention it to anyone, will you?
44:59You're the ruler you are.
45:01You need a drink to save your life and all you're thinking about is scandal.
45:04Give me that bottle.
45:05No, no, no.
45:06So long as it's medicinal.
45:11How's that?
45:13I can't tell you.
45:22No, no, no.
45:23Don't hide it away.
45:24I might have a relapse.
45:27Brother.
45:29I'll be sitting right alongside you.
45:31I should arrange a suitable, even generous reward for young Ti Hoon.
45:36Yeah.
45:37There you go again.
45:38All you can think about is money.
45:40That young fella saved your life.
45:42Oh nonsense.
45:42The village is full of sea fairy men.
45:45I'm sure one of them would have put out to save me.
45:47Miss, you'd better take another drink.
45:50Why?
45:51I've got something to tell you and you're going to need it.
45:54Oh, all right if you insist.
45:59Well.
46:01Steve called every house in town and not one man would put out to save your life for
46:05love nor money.
46:08You wanted everybody in this town to live the way you wanted them to.
46:12Brother, I, uh, that was the right way to live.
46:15Brother, there ain't any one right way to live.
46:19What's right for you is wrong for me.
46:21I only did my duty.
46:23Duty.
46:24You had a fine time.
46:26You even stood in the way of your daughter marrying the fellow she was in love with because
46:29you didn't think he was as good as you are.
46:31Well, that's deep to doing this.
46:32Deep to whom was man enough to save your life with my help.
46:36Yes.
46:37That's true.
46:38Why ding dong it.
46:40Nearly every man and woman in this town was glad to hear that.
46:42Please.
46:43Take it easy.
46:45Yeah.
46:45You get the idea?
46:47Yes.
46:47I get it.
46:50The storm's blowing itself off.
46:52How do you feel, Father?
46:53I thought a hunch he was going to be okay.
46:54Swell.
46:57I better get up on deck.
46:59It's a wonder they've left us already.
47:02Maybe you'll need another sub.
47:03And don't worry too much.
47:05It's never too late to change.
47:08Hey, this ding dong thing is stuck.
47:11Where are we?
47:12Just approaching the dock.
47:14Well, hand me the flashlight.
47:15Oh, my.
47:15Oh.
47:17Steve.
47:20He must have seasick.
47:22I'll bring her in.
47:24I'll write this to her bareback if need be.
47:35I got her.
47:37Sam.
47:38Don't worry, honey.
47:40I checked him.
47:41How'd you ever make it over back in this storm?
47:45Oh, a fellow can do anything once he sets his mind to it.
47:48Sam Smedley, you're under arrest.
47:51Anybody who wants to arrest my old partner, Sam Smedley,
47:55has got a ding dong work shooted out with me.
47:58It's all right, John.
48:00We better put the ladder.
48:02Do you think you can make it?
48:03Why did we have to go off the ladder?
48:06Tell them to bring the dock down here.
48:18Son, I'm sure glad I had time to come meet and straighten things out for you, kid.
48:21I don't know what we'd have done without you.
48:22You may think you're kidding, son, but it's a fact.
48:24I know it.
48:25Order!
48:25Get the bags.
48:27Everything all right with you two sprouts?
48:28Oh, wonderful.
48:29I wish you could stay for the wedding.
48:30Ha!
48:31It wouldn't do to have the best man who has ever been in the bridegroom.
48:33Uh-oh!
48:34There's the whistle!
48:35Where's Smith?
48:35Well, I don't know where he went.
48:36I reckon he's too embarrassed to come down and show me his gratitude.
48:39Oh!
48:40A boner whistle!
48:41Here we go!
48:41Goodbye, everybody!
48:42Bye, Sam.
48:43Be careful now.
48:44Goodbye, Sam.
48:45Here we go.
48:47Take care of yourself, Sam.
48:49Goodbye!
48:49Bye!
48:51Don't forget to write!
48:53Share the postcard!
48:54And don't forget my grandchildren!
48:56Goodbye!
48:57Goodbye!
48:58Goodbye!
49:09Dad burned if I didn't clean for get my jelly beans.
49:13Here, have one of mine.
49:15Well, thanks.
49:20How are you? Where you going?
49:22How's the housing situation out your way?
49:25If what I've got out there is big enough, I'll build on.
49:27Afraid you won't like it, though.
49:29Why not?
49:30I'm the head man, Prairie Falls.
49:31Folks out there jump when I speak.
49:33Well, I'll fix that.
49:34I can do for you what you did me.
49:37What have you got there?
49:41Liquorice.
49:42Liquorice?
49:43Really?
49:43I love it.
49:44May I?
49:45Perhaps, sure.
