00:00Free emails arriving in Kyiv just a day after Russia told all foreigners to steer clear of Ukraine
00:04and essentially threatened to attack foreign embassies here in Ukraine's capital.
00:08And even though Germany's chancellor ignored that warning, that threat,
00:11he's still got a sense of how life has changed for people here in recent weeks
00:15since Russia's faster, more lethal jet-powered drones have been attacking at all times of the day and night,
00:21hitting targets in downtown Kyiv that previously felt a lot safer than the rest of the country.
00:59People are expecting this winter to be even harder than last winter.
01:02So that was certainly very welcome, but it is essentially incremental stuff, more of the same.
01:06There is no Big Bang, there is no one single thing that Germany or any other country for that matter
01:10can do
01:11to force Russia to come to the negotiating table and to really seriously think about peace.
01:17Chancellor Mertz said that according to his calculations, his intelligence,
01:19he's convinced that Russia's war economy won't be able to sustain this war for very much longer.
01:24But there was interestingly also a message for people back home in Germany.
01:27He was asked about faltering support for aiding Ukraine,
01:31the rise of the Alternative for Germany and other parties critical of military aid to Kiev.
01:37And he was self-critical to an extent.
01:39He said, you know, his government needed to get better at explaining to people back home in Germany
01:44why supporting Ukraine was in their own interests, that it isn't about charity.
01:48And he said it quite clearly that if Ukraine were to falter,
01:52then Russia's war machine would refocus, would turn around and come for Germany next.
