00:00So there is a car, there is the engine and what the engine is producing is speed.
00:04Then there is the speedometer on the dashboard.
00:07Another piece of hardware, one part of the hardware reading another part of the system
00:13and it says 90 miles per hour.
00:16Now this 90 mph can be pretty much independent of the actual speed being produced by the engine.
00:23So this is the second order reading which we can denote in the field of neuroscience
00:28by the word confidence.
00:30Then there is the radargan outside which is telling us the ground truth.
00:34The actual speed of the vehicle is with respect to the ground.
00:37You look at the speedometer and you look at the radargan
00:40and if there is a constant difference we would call it as metacognitive bias.
00:46If these two move more or less fairly we would call it as metacognitive accuracy.
00:52And this is beautiful.
00:53This shows that the system is capable of reading itself
00:57and the system really doesn't have a choice.
01:00One part of the system is simply reading the other part of the system, generating a report.
01:03A report is a reading, not a choice.
01:06Now none of this is really referring to the driver, the driver of the vehicle.
01:12So that's where self-knowledge comes in because the driver has a choice,
01:18the driver has an intent.
01:19If there is a fault with the speedometer, there is a fault.
01:22Some people simply have better brains so they'll have better metacognitive accuracy.
01:27They don't really have a choice there.
01:29What self-knowledge deals with is the one holding the choice, the driver.
01:35So system reading the system would be metacognition and the driver investigating himself
01:41and ultimately discovering that there is no driver.
01:43But that comes later.
01:45That comes later.
01:46Maybe I can respond to something.
01:47No, I think it's a beautiful example.
01:49It's one that I should use in my lectures
01:51because that was an excellent description of metacognitive bias and sensitivity
01:56through the analogy of the vehicle.
01:58That's a beautiful angle.
01:59It's one that I should use in my convenience here.
02:00I mean, I don't want to focus on as of that,
02:01I mean, it depends on what doesn't lose weight.
02:02So as of it has ever been done.
