00:03One of many chants in Dover as protesters brought the seaside town to a
00:08halt on Saturday turning it into a sea of white and red flags and heavy police
00:13presence. I arrived early to Dover Priory station where I'd heard the
00:18anti-immigration protest was set to begin. It's just after 10 a.m. and as you can
00:22see there's no sign of any protesters yet though there is quite heavy police
00:26presence we've seen officers not just from Kemp Police but from the British
00:30Transport Police as well. Paul told me he'd organized the event that come down
00:35from Basildon in Essex. A lot of people in this country are fed up with their
00:40unelected Prime Minister totally ignoring people yeah rather than address the
00:46situation what does he do he comes out with all this he tries to silence the
00:50people he's got no right to do that people have got a genuine concern over
00:55what's happening in this country with the illegal immigrants. But a sizable
01:00number of residents disagree with Paul's anti-immigration protest and they come
01:04out to form a protest of their own. It's just gone half past two you can see
01:09behind me that the counter-protest has started just before they were chanting
01:13things like this is what community looks like and you can see a lot of them have
01:16signs that say things like stand up to racism keep fascists out of Dover and that
01:21refugees are welcome. These are people who are exploiting division to divide our
01:28communities when there are matters which could be bringing us together. I've lived
01:33in Dover since 2002 and I've seen things worsening year on year I think what
01:39happened on the 5th of September was absolutely unacceptable there was no
01:44reason for it no reason to inundate Dover with so much hatred. Across the town
01:49outside the Golden Lion pub the march was about to begin. Demonstrators were
01:54waving flags setting up homemade signs and making some noise it's just about
02:02three the process is about to start we've got large crowds about a hundred
02:06people gathering outside the Golden Lion we can hear people shouting on the
02:09megaphone stop the boat we can see lots of banners saying the English Defence
02:13League the one behind me says the poor all illegals. But why had around 200
02:19protesters young and old come to Dover that day? Grandkids. Your grandkids? Yeah, to
02:27cite them from the country that the government has destroyed. We've got five
02:32grandchildren two granddaughters who are very young and the way we feel this country is
02:38going. We fear for the future. Every single day we've heard there's a murder, rape and all the crime that's
02:51happening here I'm
02:52not saying it's all by illegal migrant, not at all. Maybe not a bit threatening for any residents who
02:58might be Muslims to see walking down the creek. So I personally believe that as the majority of Muslims in
03:04the
03:04country don't pose a threat and so it is a shame. But you're saying deport them all?
03:09Yeah, unfortunately anyone who would subscribe to the religion of Islam would be deported.
03:14It's about half three. The protest is well underway. We've seen England flags with heard chants after
03:20chants. We're right at the back of the protest where you can see policemen coming up the
03:24flank as well as riot bands with their sirens on. We're headed towards the docks past the
03:29White Cliffs where protesters are said to do their speeches. Police escorted the group down to
03:34towards the coast before issuing a section 14 order by the docks which meant the crowd
03:39had to disperse and ensured they were kept separate from the nearby counter protesters.
03:45Raven is a volunteer at the British Security Project, a group that provides protection to
03:50marches like these and chatted with me about why these events resonated with her.
03:55I do sympathise with them. I believe that we, like I said, we have enough of our own issues
04:02with our own people and our own culture. And I don't believe that importing people from places
04:10where rape, child abuse and that type of thing is the norm. I don't think it is acceptable anywhere.
04:21We'll leave that there for another day. The police later confirmed that no arrests were
04:26made at the event and described it as having passed off peacefully. Other residents across
04:32the town irritated by disruptions like these, their unrest indicates it likely won't be the
04:38last match of its kind by the White Cliffs. Megan Shaw in Dover.
