00:00Hi everyone. Over the years, I've met many, many people forced to leave their homes because of war, persecution, poverty,
00:10inequality, or climate disasters.
00:13They were looking for the same things we all wish and deserve, safety, dignity, and hope for ourselves, more importantly
00:23for our children, grandchildren.
00:24Whatever our country or status, we share that same human nature, the same rights.
00:30Through the work of organizations like ActionAid, we're reminded that real change begins by standing alongside people in need and
00:40supporting them in claiming their rights.
00:43Irregular migration is one of the defining challenges of our time right now.
00:47Governments have the right and responsibility to manage it correctly, but security cannot come at the expense of human dignity.
00:56Human rights does not stop at borders.
00:59Today, I'm increasingly concerned by the way irregular migration is being discussed across Europe and the U.S. and beyond.
01:08Fear is replacing empathy, compassion.
01:12People are reduced to numbers, their problems, their threats.
01:16Detention, deportation, and sending people beyond Europe's borders are increasingly presented as normal solutions.
01:26In Italy, this direction can be observed in the growing reliance on detention centers and in the detention and deportation
01:33model developed in Albania.
01:36It moves migration control outside Europe's borders and away from public scrutiny.
01:41What happens there could become a precedent and a frightening model for how Europe manages irregular migration in the future.
01:50That's why I stand with ActionAid, which is exposing the human costs and failures of a system built around detention
01:58and showing how it may breach people's rights in an unbalanced, unfair way.
02:06Migration can be managed without inhumane conditions, without weakening the right to seek asylum, and without treating human rights as
02:15obstacles.
02:16We are all migrants, every single one of us.
02:19Let us defend our shared humanity while there is still time.
02:25Thank you.
02:25Thank you.
