Women in Pakistan face wage gaps and barriers to employment. On digital freelance platforms, ratings and completed projects often matter more than gender. Training programs are helping women access these markets.

00:00In Pakistan, just 13.5% of wage employees are women.
00:04And they make about a quarter less per hour than men, even if they have higher education.
00:10Getting to the workplace is another barrier.
00:13In Karachi, 80% of women report having been harassed on public transport.
00:19Services are often informal and limited after dark,
00:22and social norms might dictate whether a woman can travel alone.
00:26Now, more women are shifting to working online.
00:29Hiring works differently here, says Ambreen Salman,
00:32freelance online trainer for the e-learning platform Dot and Line.
00:36If they see that the person is very well capable of doing that particular task,
00:41and if he or she is smarter enough, they will definitely go for it.
00:48I don't think so that gender comes over there.
00:51On digital freelance platforms, jobs are often awarded based on skills and results.
00:56Ratings, completed projects and customer feedback are what clients see first.
01:01The technology was not designed to promote gender equality.
01:04But some tech entrepreneurs say some of their usual biases have been challenged.
01:09So the best part is that they don't really care which gender you belong.
01:14It's all about your performance, it's all about your ratings, it's all about how you fare in the market.
01:21So it gives more chance to women as well because you're not judged by how you look or your gender.
01:29Also, programs have emerged to move more women onto these platforms.
01:34One accelerator, which has since closed, trained more than 100 women.
01:39Nearly two thirds found paid work within three months, it said.
01:44Making money changes a lot of things for almost everybody.
01:50For women, it's a huge blessing in the sense that they get that seat at the table.
