00:00:05Spaceships over Los Angeles.
00:00:08Body snatchers controlling our minds.
00:00:13ETs making contact.
00:00:15These and other alien-based scenarios
00:00:18have been the plot lines of countless
00:00:21science fiction movies and television shows.
00:00:23But what if extraterrestrial beings came to Earth tomorrow?
00:00:30Would they signal the birth of a new age of peace and prosperity?
00:00:35Or trigger a war of the worlds?
00:00:38The day that it's announced we're not alone
00:00:41is the day that this planet changes forever.
00:00:45The very structures of government
00:00:47and the very structures of religion will crumble.
00:00:51Everybody wants to meet an alien.
00:00:54But we have to start small.
00:00:55We have to learn how to walk before we can run.
00:00:58Millions of people around the world
00:01:00believe we have been visited in the past
00:01:03by extraterrestrial beings.
00:01:05What if it were true?
00:01:08Did ancient aliens really help to shape our history?
00:01:12And if so, what might happen when they return?
00:01:22The fact that we have seen the old wars
00:01:23…
00:01:48He tries to heal all things from the world
00:01:50Everyone has gazed up at the stars in awe and with wonder.
00:01:55Our ancient ancestors charted their movements, identified constellations, and marked time
00:02:04by creating celestial-based calendars.
00:02:08The stars also became the source of countless myths and legends.
00:02:14Many of these describe visitors coming down to Earth from somewhere out there.
00:02:20Others speak of entire civilizations existing out in the cosmos.
00:02:27The ancient Sanskrit writings of India tell us, for example, there are 400,000 human-like
00:02:36species scattered throughout the cosmos in different planets, different solar systems,
00:02:44even different dimensions.
00:02:46But where are these alien beings?
00:02:50Did they come to Earth in the past, as the ancient astronaut theory suggests, and then leave?
00:02:56If so, will they ever come back?
00:02:59Today, scientists around the world have stopped waiting around and are taking steps to find
00:03:07intelligent extraterrestrial life.
00:03:10Will technology finally be able to prove what our ancient ancestors believed thousands of
00:03:16years ago?
00:03:20In 1960, astronomer and physicist Frank Drake set up an unusual telescope in the hills of
00:03:27West Virginia.
00:03:30The strange device was made from surplus World War II radar equipment.
00:03:36But rather than containing a traditional optical lens, it housed a directional radio antenna.
00:03:43A few simple calculations showed that radio telescopes have the power to transmit and
00:03:48receive across literally interstellar distances, we're talking many light years.
00:03:53So, Frank Drake turned a radio telescope on a couple of nearby stars and tuned in to see
00:03:59if he could pick up a message from the aliens.
00:04:01So this was a sort of crazy thing to do.
00:04:06Drake failed to pick up any sounds that day, but the science of radio astronomy was born.
00:04:13If we couldn't see aliens in space, maybe we could hear them.
00:04:23The things we focused on in the past for searching for extraterrestrial life is really passively
00:04:28trying to discover signals on the basis that if they were technologically advanced, they
00:04:32would have some form of electricity like we do, and all electricity generates radiation.
00:04:37And it sends out the signals and hopefully we detect it.
00:04:40In 1961, Frank Drake and a group of astronomers, physicists, and biologists formed a privately funded
00:04:48organization called SETI, The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
00:04:55Their goal was to focus massive radio telescopes towards space and listen.
00:05:01Drake estimated the probability that intelligent life existed out in the universe in a variety of
00:05:07the formula that became known as the Drake Equation.
00:05:11The Drake Equation is like a bridge between scientists and non-scientists because it explains
00:05:16what you would want to know to give a number about how common alien life could be.
00:05:21There are multiple factors within the Drake Equation, like the fraction of stars that can have planets
00:05:27and the fraction of those planets that could be habitable and the fraction of those that might
00:05:31have liquid water and how many could have evolved intelligent life.
00:05:34And then one important factor is the lifetime of those civilizations.
00:05:39And that is a big unknown.
00:05:41We only know of one, that's ourselves.
00:05:43And how long are we going to be around?
00:05:46That's to be determined.
00:05:49Using his equation, Drake estimated that over 100 million advanced civilizations could exist
00:05:56in just the Milky Way galaxy.
00:05:59SETI presupposes that if you've got an alien civilization capable of traveling that's developed electronics,
00:06:08they have a fingerprint.
00:06:10That fingerprint is a repetitive signal.
00:06:13A repetitive signal will tell them that it's not just noise, junk frequencies out there,
00:06:19but a real attempt at communicating, maybe not with us, but with each other.
00:06:26On August 15th, 1977, astronomer Dr. Jerry Eamon was working on a SETI project at Ohio State University
00:06:36when he recorded an intermittent signal coming from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius.
00:06:43The signal lasted 72 seconds before being lost.
00:06:49Eamon believed that it was of extraterrestrial origin.
00:06:53But despite repeated searches and increasingly larger telescopes, the signal has never again been detected.
00:07:03But what if SETI intercepts a transmission from another world?
00:07:08What would happen next?
00:07:09According to SETI's post-detection protocols, once an extraterrestrial radio signal is confirmed,
00:07:17news of the event should be kept secret until the authorities have been notified.
00:07:22The government will then decide whether or not to try and make contact.
00:07:27I think all bets are off because here is this message that could contain enormously important information
00:07:34that would transform our society and maybe destabilize it.
00:07:37What is it going to mean for the future of our civilization? These are momentous questions.
00:07:45Today, SETI continues to scan the vicinities of nearby stars for artificially produced signals,
00:07:51using several of the world's largest telescopes.
00:07:55In the next several years, when it becomes fully operational,
00:08:00SETI's new Allen Telescope Array will allow for the reconnaissance of up to a million stars.
00:08:06SETI has to search a huge, huge area.
00:08:09They'll tell you that now they have searched the equivalent of like a glass of water
00:08:13compared to the entire ocean on Earth. They have a long way to go.
00:08:18While SETI listens passively to signals from outer space,
00:08:22NASA has attempted to contact alien life directly through messages sent aboard its space probes.
00:08:30It's a long shot, but there's no reason in my mind not to expect that life evolved elsewhere.
00:08:36What's harder to predict or try and understand is how likely is it that it happened close enough
00:08:44that there'd be someone we could actually communicate with.
00:08:49In 1972, NASA agreed to attach small plaques onto the outside of its twin Pioneer space probes,
00:08:58the first human-built objects destined to leave our solar system.
00:09:03NASA contacted Cornell University professor Dr. Carl Sagan to craft the message.
00:09:10Carl Sagan was one of the most active astronomers in the search for life outside our planet.
00:09:17He was a very prominent scientist, he was an excellent astronomer,
00:09:21and he really did a lot to help us understand how we might
00:09:24contact other life or detect life elsewhere in the universe.
00:09:30Sagan, along with SETI founder Frank Drake, designed a gold anodized aluminum plaque
00:09:36measuring roughly six by nine inches that contained a collection of symbolic images
00:09:42representing humans and Earth.
00:09:45The man and the woman were nude and the gentleman was holding one arm up like this
00:09:50and what was intended to be a sign of a sign of greeting.
00:09:54A schematic design of the solar system was also shown,
00:09:57with the planned trajectory of the Pioneer spacecraft marked on it.
00:10:02And a diagram of 14 pulsar stars around the sun
00:10:06made a chart that might help someone work out where the craft originated.
00:10:11We tried to give them an idea of where we're located,
00:10:14and that's an interesting problem is to figure out how you would tell someone where you're located in space,
00:10:19because you don't know where they're going to find it.
00:10:21And it was all in a very stylistic design, but an attempt to hopefully communicate at least some of these
00:10:26ideas.
00:10:28Five years later, in 1977, Dr. Sagan got a second chance at designing an interstellar message,
00:10:37when NASA agreed to attach another one to the Voyager space probes.
00:10:42This time, Sagan created a record album made of gold-plated copper,
00:10:47along with a series of basic instructions in how to make it work.
00:10:52Sagan estimated that the metallic disk could survive in space for at least a billion years.
00:10:59One of the challenges with technology is trying to figure out one that can do what you want.
00:11:05So here you want to encode audio and even some video images,
00:11:08but do it in a way that almost any other technologically advanced society could figure out.
00:11:13And the advantage of a record player is it's both mechanical and electrical.
00:11:18The grooves are obvious.
00:11:20And so they actually put on the cover instructions on how to play it.
00:11:24The recording included a wide variety of sounds.
00:11:29A baby's cry.
00:11:31Wind.
00:11:33Surf and rain.
00:11:35Animal noises.
00:11:37As well as classical and cultural music from around the world.
00:11:42One interesting song selection was Chuck Berry's rock and roll hit, Johnny B. Goode.
00:11:50Music is a good choice because almost anything vibrates and makes sound.
00:11:54So I would have bet that almost any culture would develop music.
00:11:58I believe it's Bach who gets the most time on the record.
00:12:01I don't know why they picked that to be honest, but he is one of the more mathematical composers.
00:12:05And that may have been one of the reasons because math is a more universal language.
00:12:09Sagan also included a wide array of photographs of well-known man-made structures and greetings in 55 different languages.
00:12:20I think the most important one is the Sumerian language.
00:12:24Now, why would they include Sumerian on that record?
00:12:29Well, according to the ancient alien theory, ancient Sumeria is the first place where we made contact with an extraterrestrial
00:12:39entity.
00:12:43At this point, we obviously haven't learned anything yet about extraterrestrial life because we haven't been contacted back.
00:12:49But I think for our own purposes, anytime you try and go and figure out how you want to communicate
00:12:56something,
00:12:56it pushes your boundaries and understanding of communication itself.
00:13:01We all want to find aliens, whether it's the planetary scientists looking for signs of life on another distant planet,
00:13:08whether it's the ancient alien proponents who want to find signs of life of aliens who have visited in the
00:13:14past,
00:13:14and whether it's people today who want to have experiences with UFOs and aliens that have visited them recently.
00:13:21All of us are trying to do the same thing.
00:13:23While the search for extraterrestrial beings continues,
00:13:27a new space-based telescope is hunting for planets that may contain life.
00:13:33Are there other Earths out there?
00:13:35And if so, how will we find them?
00:13:41Ignition.
00:13:45On March 6, 2009, NASA launched a Delta II rocket into space.
00:13:52On board was a new telescope, named in honor of German astronomer Johann Kepler.
00:13:59The space-based telescope was designed specifically to discover the existence of Earth-like planets
00:14:06located outside our own solar system.
00:14:10The Kepler search is focused on a specific section of the Milky Way, known as Orion's spur.
00:14:18Kepler's job is to answer the question, how common are other Earths?
00:14:25And to do this, Kepler's looking at one part of the sky for three and a half years.
00:14:30Imagine, like, keeping your eyes open and staring at just one part of the sky.
00:14:37And what they're doing is they're looking at stars, and then as a planet goes around that star,
00:14:42when the planet gets in front of the star, the starlight dims just a little bit from our
00:14:46vantage point because it's being blocked by the planet.
00:14:48And so you look for that dimming of those stars, and then that's how you're able to detect these planets.
00:14:58So far, the Kepler telescope has confirmed the existence of five planets outside our own solar system.
00:15:05NASA officials expect to find several hundred more exoplanets like these before their mission is completed.
00:15:14Once a planet has been located, scientists must then determine if it might contain water.
00:15:24We know from Earth that all life on Earth requires liquid water.
00:15:32So that is the approach that we've been taking for looking for life elsewhere in the universe.
00:15:37Follow the water. And so that is the step one.
00:15:46On Earth, wherever we find liquid water, we find life. And it's true.
00:15:51Life on Earth can exist under an extraordinary range of conditions.
00:15:57Extreme organisms that live in the scalding effluent coming out of the Earth's crust deep beneath the ocean.
00:16:05There are other remarkable organisms living in the waste pools of nuclear reactors in extreme
00:16:10radiation environments and so on. But the one thing that seems to be absolutely necessary for life,
00:16:15as we know it, is liquid water.
00:16:20To determine if a planet contains water and possibly life,
00:16:24scientists use special telescopes to analyze its atmosphere.
00:16:31We look at the light coming from the planet and we split that light up like a rainbow.
00:16:37Now, if you look at a rainbow in the sky and you look really, really carefully, you will see some
00:16:42dark lines.
00:16:43You'll see some colors missing from the rainbow.
00:16:45And those colors are missing because of absorption by gases in Earth's atmosphere.
00:16:50So effectively, we're getting a rainbow from another planet and we're looking for dark lines that tell us what kind
00:16:56of gases are in the atmosphere.
00:16:58To better understand how life affects its atmosphere, NASA scientists study microbial mats at California's Moss Landing Wildlife Area.
00:17:09Microbial mats are important to NASA for a whole bunch of reasons.
00:17:13The organisms that are in microbial mats have been on Earth just about longer than any other kind of organism.
00:17:17They make a number of things which we call biomarkers, which are important in our search for life on other
00:17:22planets.
00:17:22So there are textural biomarkers. So when you pull up a piece of microbial mat and look at the surface,
00:17:29what does that look like?
00:17:32But one of the things that we're doing with these microbial mats is we're measuring the fluxes of methane.
00:17:36Methane is a gas that's produced by certain kinds of organisms that use the organic matter that's in these mats.
00:17:42And when that methane goes into our atmosphere, it can be detected by other missions,
00:17:47such as Terrestrial Planet Finder is one of NASA's concept missions for looking for gases
00:17:52that are produced by life on exoplanets.
00:17:56We can look for the signature of oxygen or water on a planet,
00:18:00and at least that would give us an idea of life forms like ourselves,
00:18:03the ones that are carbon-based and use oxygen and carbon dioxide cycles.
00:18:08Our atmosphere is not stable without living organisms. It would have evaporated away by now.
00:18:14And so if you're looking out in space and you detect around the star a signature
00:18:19of the chemicals that we know exist for life, that's very strong evidence that life is there.
00:18:25Now, it doesn't help you know if it's intelligent life, but it does give you an evidence for life.
00:18:31With a universe literally full of possibilities,
00:18:35planet hunters focus their search on an area they call a Goldilocks zone.
00:18:41The Goldilocks zone for planets is the place where a planet is not too hot,
00:18:46not too cold, but just the right temperature for life.
00:18:51Right now, we know of no planets like Earth in a Goldilocks zone.
00:18:55One planet comes close. It's called Gliese 581d.
00:19:00But we're not entirely sure if that planet is really in the Goldilocks zone or not.
00:19:06In recent years, it's been recognized that there's more than one Goldilocks zone.
00:19:10For example, there could be life inside icy planetesimals.
00:19:16These are like small planets or large moons.
00:19:18Moon of Jupiter, Europa, is a very good example.
00:19:22Europa is liquid beneath an ice cap.
00:19:26It's liquid underneath because of tidal heating and friction going on inside the planet.
00:19:31So it could be that there is life microbial probably only deep down under the ice on Europa.
00:19:40It's a very challenging question if there's life elsewhere in our solar system.
00:19:46You have so many components that have to come together.
00:19:49We have to have an understanding of the science. We have to ask the right questions.
00:19:54I wish I had a tricorder that I could just go and like point and would say life or no
00:19:58life.
00:19:59Right? But we don't have that.
00:20:00So we have to be smart and we have to be clever and we have to develop instruments
00:20:04that can actually address the questions we're trying to answer.
00:20:09It's inevitable. There's so many planets out there.
00:20:12It's inevitable that we'll find one in the Goldilocks zone any day.
00:20:16But while the Kepler telescope has only just begun scanning the horizon,
00:20:23NASA is already planning the next step in its search for extraterrestrial life.
00:20:28The 2014 launch of the James Webb Space Telescope.
00:20:34People always ask me, do you expect to find an Earth in your lifetime?
00:20:39And I say, yes, absolutely.
00:20:43When I was a student, there was almost nobody prepared to argue that way.
00:20:47The feeling back in the 60s and 70s was that even if there were other Earth-like planets,
00:20:52life is such an improbable freak event that it would never ever happen anywhere else.
00:20:58Now the prevailing view is, yes, the universe is teeming with life.
00:21:03Everybody wants to meet an alien, but we have to start small.
00:21:06We have to learn how to walk before we can run.
00:21:09The fascinating thing for me is that we're only four and a half billion years old.
00:21:14In a universe that's close to 14 billion years old,
00:21:18what would happen with some of these Earth-like planets that had a 5 or 10 billion year head start
00:21:25on us?
00:21:27Gosh, you can only imagine.
00:21:29But what if humans are not the only intelligent creatures searching for life in the universe?
00:21:35What if there are beings on other planets conducting a search of their own?
00:21:39And what if, in their search, they find us before we find them?
00:21:45Some believe they already have.
00:21:51On October 30th, 1938, radio listeners across the United States sat stunned
00:21:59as a series of news bulletins described Martians invading Earth.
00:22:04Martian cylinders are falling all over the country. It's at the end now.
00:22:10While the broadcast sounded real, it was a fictional production, directed and narrated by Orson Welles.
00:22:19Incredibly, many of those listening believed it to be true and panicked.
00:22:27Newspaper reports described families fleeing their homes for the mountains,
00:22:32while others armed themselves with weapons and prepared to fight off the alien invaders.
00:22:39If it was just presented maybe with a brief introduction saying it was not really happening,
00:22:45but from then on it was played as if it was really happening, well, most people who heard that thought
00:22:50that it was really happening.
00:22:53People became upset. Some of those literally headed for the hills.
00:22:58They drove places to try to pick up other people, family and friends. They reported to the armory for duty.
00:23:06The response to this fictional alien attack resulted in many people preparing for the worst.
00:23:13But if the public's reaction to a radio dramatization resulted in a nationwide wave of terror,
00:23:20what would happen if they really came?
00:23:26Los Angeles, California.
00:23:31In the early months of 1942, the city was on edge.
00:23:38The recent surprise attack on Pearl Harbor had propelled America into World War II.
00:23:45And the threat of a Japanese invasion, by sea or by air, kept the military on full alert.
00:23:55Pearl Harbor was a very recent memory for people.
00:23:59People were in high alert. There was a great deal of suspicion. Japanese Americans were being put in
00:24:05internment camps. There were German U-boats in the Atlantic, Japanese submarines in the Pacific,
00:24:12and people were very fearful.
00:24:19In a well-organized defense operation, air raid wardens and the Coast Guard were monitoring the
00:24:26Pacific shoreline as never before.
00:24:30The war had started. I was a 13-year-old kid. And this one night, which was February 1942,
00:24:43the sirens started wailing in the middle of the night. Blackout.
00:24:52And we'd had several blackouts before this.
00:24:56On February 25th, between the hours of 3.12 and 4.15 a.m.,
00:25:02the 37th Coast Artillery Brigade in Los Angeles fired off a barrage of anti-aircraft shells at an
00:25:10unidentified flying object.
00:25:14Watchers on the rooftop of the Columbia Broadcasting Building in the heart of Hollywood
00:25:19could plainly see the flashes of guns and searchlights sweeping the skies in a wide arc
00:25:24along the coastal area.
00:25:27I think what woke me up initially was the sound of anti-aircraft guns.
00:25:34I jumped out of bed and my parents were up. My father was an air raid warden.
00:25:40He figured this has to be the real thing.
00:25:46My mother was telling my brother and I,
00:25:48get under the bed, get under the bed, stay there.
00:25:51Of course, we got out and we peeked.
00:25:55There was all this firing. It was almost like a Fourth of July.
00:26:01I started hearing a lot of loud explosions.
00:26:06My brother and I looked out the bedroom window, saw searchlights,
00:26:13twisted and turned in the sky.
00:26:21But what was the strange UFO that the searchlights were focused on?
00:26:26Where had it come from? Japan or somewhere from out of this world?
00:26:35Could this incredible photograph published the next morning in the Los Angeles Times provide the proof?
00:26:42Could ancient astronaut theorists have been right all along?
00:26:46It was practically overhead, and I mean overhead.
00:26:51Retired anthropology professor C. Scott Littleton was nine years old and growing up in Hermosa Beach
00:26:58when he spotted the strange object hovering right over his house.
00:27:03We saw what my mother always called a silver bug.
00:27:09I'd characterize it today as a lozenge, a long oval. It was something I'll never ever forget.
00:27:17It was caught in searchlight beams, and anti-aircraft shells were exploding all around it.
00:27:28It gradually went like this, and then began to lose altitude a little bit as it moved over what
00:27:39had to have been Redondo Beach. We lost track of it, but the banging continued.
00:27:48And very quickly afterward, I saw, we all saw, a flight of planes following the track of the object,
00:27:57going overhead anywhere from three to five interceptors, clearly piston-driven U.S. planes.
00:28:04No one has ever admitted that those planes were in the sky.
00:28:09Our first thought immediately was a Japanese observation plane. Later, the Japanese records
00:28:17definitively proved there were no Japanese planes over Southern California that night, or indeed ever.
00:28:26After ruling out the possibility that a Japanese plane had invaded American airspace,
00:28:33Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox attributed the incident to war nerves.
00:28:40But Secretary of War Henry Stimson quickly refuted this explanation,
00:28:46defensively declaring that an actual aircraft had been the target of the assault.
00:28:53To this day, no one seems to know just what, or who, was hovering over Los Angeles that night.
00:29:06Some claimed that the Los Angeles air raid was nothing more than an elaborate training exercise,
00:29:12a show put on by the military to keep citizens on the ready in case of a real attack.
00:29:19Others alleged that the unidentified flying object was, in fact, a barrage balloon that had broken loose from its tether.
00:29:28But even that explanation doesn't seem credible to those who witnessed the actual event.
00:29:35The one place where there were barrage balloons that were anchored above the aircraft plants
00:29:40in El Segundo, Douglas, North American, it would have to have slipped its tether,
00:29:46floated north up to the Santa Monica Mountains, and then back down this way.
00:29:50Barrage balloons don't maneuver like that.
00:29:55Regardless of the controversy, one fact is undisputed.
00:29:59An estimated 14,000 shells were fired at the strange object,
00:30:05and shrapnel rained from the sky for over an hour.
00:30:10But what were the guns aimed at?
00:30:14Would the Army really have put civilian lives in danger for a drill?
00:30:20Major panic. Six people got killed due to car accidents and hit by falling shrapnel.
00:30:27A friend of mine said he witnessed a piece of shrapnel go through his neighbor's garage roof.
00:30:33So, oh yeah, there was some damage from falling shrapnel.
00:30:39The next morning, there was something in our backyard my mother told me to go roll up.
00:30:44It was like a tarp or something. And when I bent down or kneeled down in the grass,
00:30:49I cut my knee and I have my piece of shrapnel.
00:30:53I've kept it all these years.
00:30:55There's my shrapnel. And it's very sharp.
00:31:02By a process of elimination, the most efficient, and I say this as a scholar,
00:31:09the most efficient explanation is that it was what we would call today a UFO.
00:31:17Something not of this world, something that belonged to another technology.
00:31:22If that's true, then this event was one of the largest mass UFO sightings in history.
00:31:29Over a million people saw it.
00:31:35But whether it was a UFO or not, the memories remain vivid for those who saw something in the sky
00:31:42that night.
00:31:43So vivid, in fact, that many of them gather each year at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, California,
00:31:51to reenact this mysterious event.
00:31:55The city went crazy. They thought it was we were being attacked by Japanese planes.
00:32:01Some theories said weather balloon. Others said, you know, oh, I saw a plane. I know I saw a plane.
00:32:07And others say, no, no such plane.
00:32:09Act that it was a scary thing. I think to this day, they don't know what they were firing at.
00:32:14Was it weather balloon or flying saucers?
00:32:18But for those who believe they saw an alien craft that night, one important question remains.
00:32:26What happened to it?
00:32:30The rumor is that it finally crashed in the water and was recovered by Navy divers.
00:32:38So maybe it was wounded and it crashed.
00:32:42And this might explain why the military was so quick to react to Roswell five years later,
00:32:51because they may already have had at least some inkling of what they would find there.
00:32:58Was Earth really visited by an alien spacecraft on the morning of February 25th, 1942?
00:33:06And could the global threats posed by World War II have provided a trigger?
00:33:14Perhaps the idea is not as far-fetched as some would think.
00:33:19Is it possible that alien spacecraft could have been mistaken for enemy fighter planes in Adolf Hitler's Germany?
00:33:31In his 1993 book, The Gods of Eden, author William Bramley theorized that extraterrestrials
00:33:40played a part in nearly every catastrophe in human history,
00:33:45and have even used war as a means to control the growth of the human population.
00:33:53But while many are skeptical about Bramley's claims, there is one thing on which they agree.
00:34:02That the number of reported UFO sightings always increases during wartime.
00:34:08In times of war, when vast civilizations are in conflict, and in conflict so terrible,
00:34:16that it seems as though the civilizations will wipe themselves out,
00:34:20suddenly, out of nowhere, UFOs appear.
00:34:25While skeptics and military historians attribute these alleged sightings to war nerves or stress,
00:34:32those who believe in UFOs find the number of instances hard to dismiss.
00:34:40When World War II broke out in September of 1939,
00:34:46there were numerous reports of unidentified flying objects spotted over Hitler's Germany.
00:34:53Although the term UFO had not yet been coined,
00:34:56the Allies believed the bogeys, as they were then known, were new fighter planes being developed by the Nazis.
00:35:06But the first combat bomber jets, the German Messerschmitt Me 262,
00:35:13weren't deployed by the German Air Force until 1943.
00:35:19It certainly doesn't escape notice just how advanced the Nazi propulsion systems and their aeronautics technology really was.
00:35:29They had the first operational jet fighter to see combat.
00:35:35They were building and test flying aircraft that look incredibly similar to UFOs that are reported even today.
00:35:46They had greatly advanced rocket technology.
00:35:49There have long been rumors about Nazi projects to build aircraft using UFO technology.
00:36:00At the end of the 19th century, there was Ali Esther Crowley, H.G. Wells,
00:36:06Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula, and Jules Verne, who wrote From Earth to the Moon.
00:36:12They were in a society called the Golden Dawn.
00:36:15In that society, they actually believed in the existence, not only of UFOs, but extraterrestrials.
00:36:23That culture influenced Hitler in the late 1920s, early into the 1930s.
00:36:31In looking for the origins of the Aryan race, they went all the way to India and the Vedic texts,
00:36:38which talk about UFOs.
00:36:41So Hitler, in his own way, was a UFO believer and sought to develop his own version of the UFO
00:36:48based on the Vedic text
00:36:50to have a dramatic wunderwaffe, a wonder weapon that would end the war.
00:36:57Although the Nazis never developed this so-called wonder weapon,
00:37:01reports of strange flying machines in German airspace continued throughout the war.
00:37:08But just what was it that the Allied pilots were reporting?
00:37:13In the 1940s, as waves of American bombers were literally obliterating German cities,
00:37:24Dresden, Hamburg, Berlin.
00:37:28In these raids, American fighter pilots saw these balls of light coming at their planes.
00:37:34They didn't know what they were.
00:37:36They thought they were German secret weapons at first, so they called them Foo Fighters.
00:37:42The word fear in French is fire, and these were balls of fire coming out.
00:37:48So, instead of fear fighters, they were Foo Fighters.
00:37:53They were seen in large numbers over Germany and over Western Europe,
00:37:57where they were described variously as structured craft or simply balls of light.
00:38:02It was so important at the time that the military began to notice it, and they began to investigate these
00:38:09things.
00:38:09There were hundreds of cases.
00:38:11None seemed to be very harmful to planes, but they were all over the place.
00:38:18Curiously, when the Foo Fighters appeared, Allied aircraft would sometimes experience mechanical failure.
00:38:24And perhaps most mystifying of all was that some pilots reported flying right through the UFOs as if they had
00:38:34no mass.
00:38:39It was never discovered what the Foo Fighters were or where they came from.
00:38:44But the theory that they were some sort of German secret weapon was widely accepted among Allied pilots at the
00:38:52time.
00:38:52But could the Third Reich have possessed technology more advanced than even our most modern aircraft?
00:39:00Some believe what the Nazis had developed was an advanced mechanism that scientists are still working on today.
00:39:07Mercury-powered anti-gravity technology.
00:39:12This involves Mercury being in a closed system, like a glass ball.
00:39:20Once that Mercury becomes spinning in a gyroscopic manner within the closed system, that creates a lift.
00:39:29It's an electrified lift. It's also a very bright light.
00:39:34And in fact, many UFOs are described as exactly that.
00:39:38Towards the end of World War II, the Germans started producing massive amounts of Mercury.
00:39:46And in fact, a number of the U-boats that were later sunk, one was sunk near Singapore, another one
00:39:52in Norway,
00:39:53only a few years ago they actually found it.
00:39:55And its entire cargo was Mercury.
00:39:58What the few historians have actually written about Foo Fighters, which is still apparently a secret today,
00:40:05is that they were a kind of Mercury plasma ball.
00:40:09And the purpose of the Foo Fighters was to make a highly pulsed magnetic charge and field around the bombers,
00:40:22which would then cut out the engines and interfere with the electrical systems in the planes.
00:40:31Could Foo Fighters really have been based on extraterrestrial technology?
00:40:37If so, where did the Germans get it?
00:40:42UFO theorists point to the discovery of a flying saucer that allegedly crashed in the Black Forest near Freiburg, Germany
00:40:51in 1936.
00:40:53Some believe German scientists repaired the craft to test its energy and propulsion systems.
00:41:01And through reverse engineering, were able to replicate some of these so-called alien technologies.
00:41:08Did the Nazis take this craft and was there some sort of a pact that happened there?
00:41:13Did the Nazis, did they retrieve bodies?
00:41:17It's hard to pin down how much they had. Was there contact?
00:41:20There's always been that theory that they had a captured craft and that they were reverse engineering it.
00:41:28It's very possible. They were truly way more advanced than any culture at the time.
00:41:35Thank God for the American know-how, because we were combating them with our own kind of knowledge and technology
00:41:41as well.
00:41:42After World War II, there was an exercise mounted by the Americans called Operation Paperclip.
00:41:51The Allies had been confronted with all this amazing technology from Germany.
00:41:57The jet engines, airplanes, the rocket engine airplanes, all these amazing devices.
00:42:04To give you an example of some of the material that was collected by Operation Paperclip,
00:42:10that right at the end of the war, Von Braun and his team had begun designing multi-stage rockets capable
00:42:18of reaching the United States.
00:42:21They also had plans for a space station, the classic circular sci-fi space station.
00:42:28And on this, they had a huge sunlight collector and mirror that was designed to focus sunlight down on the
00:42:36Earth as a kind of death ray.
00:42:39There were all these wild ideas coming out of that team that turned it into a very valuable coup for
00:42:47the United States.
00:42:49Ultimately, it was Von Braun who built the Saturn V rocket that took people to the moon.
00:43:03The story of the World War II Foo Fighters, much like that of the Battle of Los Angeles,
00:43:09has been largely forgotten or dismissed by traditional historians.
00:43:15But an event that happened just two years after the war at even the skeptics wondering,
00:43:21what if aliens really did exist?
00:43:27And could one of their craft have crashed to Earth?
00:43:37Mainstream archaeologists have long rejected the notion that extraterrestrial beings had a hand in creating the pyramids of Egypt.
00:43:48Theologians and religious scholars refute the idea that stories of the Bible or the Mahabharata could be describing alien encounters.
00:43:59And governments throughout history have officially denied reports that the Earth has been visited by flying saucers.
00:44:07But on July 8, 1947, a UFO sighting was reported that even the United States government
00:44:15had trouble denying it had trouble denying.
00:44:17Why? Because this time, the report was issued by the U.S. Army.
00:44:25I'm walking on the Foster Ranch between Corona and Roswell, New Mexico,
00:44:30not far from what is called the debris field right over that hill.
00:44:34And that debris field refers to headlines back in July of 1947 about a disk.
00:44:44One of those mysterious UFOs actually crashing right out here.
00:44:52One night in early July 1947, a major thunderstorm rolled across New Mexico.
00:45:01The next morning, rancher Mack Brazel went out to check on the damage.
00:45:06Mack Brazel went out to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be.
00:45:10And he came across this really extensive area of debris, stuff he had never seen before.
00:45:16He brought it to the local sheriff's office.
00:45:19In 1947, Roswell was home to Roswell Army Airfield.
00:45:24The sheriff called the base, the base sent Major Jess Marcel.
00:45:29And at that point, it basically became a military site as they gathered up every bit of debris they could
00:45:34find.
00:45:35In their initial report, Army officials made a vague claim of having started the recovery of the debris sometime last
00:45:43week.
00:45:44But why didn't the Army report their findings right away?
00:45:48And why were they so ambiguous about the timeline?
00:45:54One of the biggest things we have is the newspaper of July 8, 1947, where Colonel Blanchard issued an order
00:46:02to Lieutenant Walter Haught, who was the public information officer,
00:46:05saying, basically, we have in our possession of flying saucer, it's being taken to Fort Worth, to higher headquarters.
00:46:11Roswell was a real turning point for ufology.
00:46:14I think that was because the military for the first time admitted that they had a crash disk.
00:46:22And because it was admitted at the time, of course, it caused a sensation.
00:46:28Then July 9, General Ramey issued a press release saying, no, it was a weather balloon.
00:46:35And that started the best documented UFO cover-up ever.
00:46:42Army officials referred to the debris as being part of a flying disk.
00:46:47Internal memos even referenced the crash site as having victims.
00:46:52So why, less than 24 hours later, did they suddenly decide that what they had retrieved was nothing more than
00:47:00a weather balloon?
00:47:03Although Blanchard and Ramey stuck by the revised story, Lieutenant Haught stood by the contents of his initial report his
00:47:12entire life.
00:47:13And those who believe him, think modern technology, may have recently provided the irrefutable evidence they have been looking for.
00:47:24When Major Marcel took the debris to Fort Worth, and General Ramey spread it out to give this press conference
00:47:31that it was a weather balloon,
00:47:33there was a picture taken, and in his hand is a piece of paper.
00:47:37And it's a very little piece of paper, I mean, and this has been blown up, and it is a
00:47:42memo.
00:47:43There is a leading researcher in the field who is pulling the words out of this.
00:47:49And they include things like team at Fort Worth, forwarded victims of the wreck, pod or pan.
00:47:57And so every year that the technology improves, General Ramey may be the one to solve it.
00:48:04Bob Wood, a researcher in UFOs, had received leaked documents in 1996, and shared them with me and a few
00:48:14others.
00:48:15This document called the Interplanetary Phenomena Unit, with a War Department stamp dated July 22, 1947.
00:48:28The most disturbing aspect of this investigation was that there were other bodies found not far from Landing Zone 1,
00:48:36the Mac Brazel site between Corona and Roswell, that looked as if they had been dissected, as you would a
00:48:45frog.
00:48:46It does not define were those bodies human, were those bodies non-human.
00:48:52But suddenly, for me, this electric jolt that came into holding that document and reading at the end of the
00:49:0390s
00:49:04what would explain, finally, that our government knew that extraterrestrial biological entities from somewhere else in the cosmos
00:49:14was interacting with our planet for a very long time.
00:49:22Five years after Roswell, the United States Air Force coined the term Unidentified Flying Object, or UFO.
00:49:32In the decades since, thousands of UFOs have been reported, photographed, and videotaped all over the world.
00:49:41Oh, my God.
00:49:44Perhaps one of the biggest, most revolutionary pieces of technology to change our view of UFOs and flying saucers is
00:49:53the video cam.
00:49:55Whoa, I'm getting a series of lights right there.
00:49:57I got it, I got it, I got it.
00:49:58You only have to look at what happened in Phoenix, Arizona, in March of 1997, when these huge flying boomerangs
00:50:07went right across Phoenix, right through the whole valley, heading south to the Mexico border.
00:50:13These were all caught on cameras. Network news caught these. Local news caught these. You saw these on CNN. You
00:50:19saw these on Larry King.
00:50:21Oh, there it is, over to the left.
00:50:22Wow.
00:50:23And yes, people called them flares. Of course they did. But the fact is, when you see something with your
00:50:30own eyes...
00:50:31Look, dude, Pat, you got it?
00:50:33I see you.
00:50:34...even if it's on a video camera, suddenly your perspective changes.
00:50:38And that middle one is moving quick. It's only the beginning, you guys.
00:50:43So now, according to recent polls, Gallup polls and Roper polls, well over 50% of Americans believe that flying
00:50:55saucers exist.
00:50:57And close to 50% believe that the government knows that flying saucers exist and that the government is hiding
00:51:05that fact.
00:51:08But why so many UFO sightings after Roswell?
00:51:12Is it a coincidence?
00:51:13Or is the world's growing belief in aliens providing cover for those who might previously have been too afraid of
00:51:20ridicule to come forward?
00:51:23Perhaps there is another reason.
00:51:26Perhaps there are more sightings because there is a genuine increase in alien visitations.
00:51:34...ever since the dawn of the space age.
00:51:38There had been plenty of stories of UFOs and aliens prior to that, a lot of sightings.
00:51:44They weren't as widely reported, somewhat also because World War II had been going on prior to that.
00:51:51But because now we had a crash, and there was more room in the newspaper, so to speak, I think
00:51:57that really helped the subject take off.
00:52:01If, as some suggest, aliens from other worlds truly are among us, and have done their best to keep themselves
00:52:09hidden for thousands of years, will they ever reveal their presence?
00:52:16More importantly, what happens if they do?
00:52:20And what if it is already happening?
00:52:28In March 2010, a mysterious pulsating light floated over Cleveland, Ohio, for 11 consecutive nights.
00:52:38We're having a sighting right now over the lake.
00:52:41I'm going to say 270 degrees south.
00:52:44There are two objects.
00:52:47One is coming up from the left.
00:52:48These are extremely close to each other.
00:52:51There's absolutely no way these are planes.
00:52:53Right now, what's happening is the initial object that came out, it's sitting there, it's hovering, it's getting extremely bright,
00:53:00it's illuminating different colors.
00:53:02And this second object appeared from, I'm going to say, the top left of it, and now it looks like
00:53:09it's moving around it.
00:53:11Wow!
00:53:11They completely just switched spots.
00:53:15Oh my God, this is beautiful.
00:53:17It knows we're watching.
00:53:18It knows we're watching.
00:53:20The Cleveland sighting is one of thousands reported each year.
00:53:25And while many are proved to be false alarms, others are not so easily discredited.
00:53:31Right below it.
00:53:32Big bright white flash just occurred.
00:53:34In 1991, Britain's Ministry of Defense assigned author and journalist Nick Pope to track the hundreds of sightings reported over
00:53:44England, Scotland, and Wales every year.
00:53:48The Ministry of Defense has been looking at the UFO issues since the 1950s.
00:53:55And the whole reason for looking at these UFO sightings is not necessarily because the department corporately believes in extraterrestrial
00:54:03visitation.
00:54:04It's more to do with keeping a watchful eye on any unusual activity in British airspace.
00:54:10Clearly, if there's something there that's a little bit out of the ordinary, we want to know about it.
00:54:20My beliefs when I was given this job were, I think, what on earth have I let myself in for
00:54:25here?
00:54:25I had no particular knowledge or interest in the UFO phenomenon, certainly no belief in anything unusual.
00:54:34But the more I looked back through the archive of old files and the more I began to investigate the
00:54:39ones that were being reported to me on a daily basis,
00:54:42I began to change my mind and realize that some of these UFO sightings couldn't be explained in conventional terms.
00:54:52Many of the most intriguing cases Pope researched involved eyewitness reports from pilots, police, and military officers,
00:55:02while others featured classified radar, video, or photographic evidence.
00:55:12One case that was a particular turning point for me was the so-called Cosford incident.
00:55:19Now, Cosford is a military base in the United Kingdom, and on the particular night in question, which was 30th
00:55:28of March 1993,
00:55:30there was a wave of sightings over a period of about six hours, and there were many police and military
00:55:36witnesses,
00:55:36and two Air Force bases, Cosford and Shawbury, were directly overflown by a vast triangular-shaped craft.
00:55:48Now, the meteorological officer at one of these bases described this to me as the size of a jumbo jet,
00:55:55hovering or moving very, very slowly, and then accelerating away to the horizon at incredible speed.
00:56:02He said, many times faster than a military jet.
00:56:06And this was a man with eight years' experience in the Air Force.
00:56:11This sighting was thoroughly investigated, not only by private UFO investigators,
00:56:17but also by the British government, who were unable to explain all of the sightings reported during this incident.
00:56:26Another intriguing British UFO sighting took place in December 1980.
00:56:32U.S. Air Force personnel stationed in Suffolk, England, reported seeing a brilliantly illuminated spaceship
00:56:39that landed in Randalsham Forest on two consecutive nights.
00:56:54What made this case particularly unusual is that this was not vague lights in the sky.
00:57:00This was a landed metallic craft that some of the witnesses claimed they got so close to,
00:57:07they could actually touch the side of it.
00:57:09One witness saw strange symbols on the hull, which he likened to Egyptian hieroglyphs.
00:57:16He made a sketch of this in his police notebook and took some photos,
00:57:20though he was subsequently told they didn't come out.
00:57:23The Ministry of Defence looked at this and the Defence Intelligence staff assessed radiation readings
00:57:32that had been taken at the landing site as being significantly higher than background.
00:57:37And that's a direct quote from the government's own assessment.
00:57:40The British government generated a massive file of information about this sighting report.
00:57:47But at this date, it's very unlikely that the actual truth about this sighting will ever be known.
00:57:58But in spite of the compelling eyewitness testimony,
00:58:02the Ministry of Defence soon declared the case closed.
00:58:07Twenty-two years later, when the government declassified files on the Rendlesham incident,
00:58:13the evidence was inconclusive.
00:58:16But what stood out was the credibility of the main witnesses,
00:58:20who were trained military personnel.
00:58:23Obviously, as a UFO hunter, I've met a lot of people who've encountered UFOs.
00:58:29Just flying on a plane, for example,
00:58:32you're on a plane and suddenly the pilot comes out of the cockpit
00:58:36and this has happened on five separate occasions.
00:58:38And he'll say to me,
00:58:40I saw a UFO over Phoenix.
00:58:42I saw a UFO over Texas.
00:58:44Half my crew saw a UFO.
00:58:46And you'll say to the pilot,
00:58:47well, do you report it?
00:58:48And they say,
00:58:49when the flight controller says at the airport,
00:58:52do you want to report a UFO sighting?
00:58:54And then bursts out laughing,
00:58:56what you say is no.
00:58:58There are UFO sightings every single day.
00:59:02Real people with real sightings of real UFOs.
00:59:07It is very prevalent as more and more people talk about it.
00:59:12Something is going on.
00:59:15In terms of the government response to all this,
00:59:19certainly in Britain,
00:59:20the Ministry of Defence policy for many years
00:59:24has been to try and downplay this subject.
00:59:27Not really in any great sinister attempt
00:59:30to cover up the truth about UFOs,
00:59:33whatever that might be,
00:59:34but more out of embarrassment.
00:59:35There are things in our airspace,
00:59:37we don't know what they are,
00:59:38and that's not a good place for the government
00:59:39and the military to be.
00:59:41On December 1st, 2009,
00:59:44the British Ministry of Defence
00:59:45quietly terminated its UFO project,
00:59:49citing that there had been no credible evidence
00:59:52that UFOs posed a potential threat
00:59:54to the United Kingdom.
00:59:58There are a number of aspects of this decision
01:00:03that were particularly controversial.
01:00:05Firstly, UFO sightings are at a 10-year high
01:00:09in the United Kingdom,
01:00:10so it seemed the most inopportune moment
01:00:13to pull the plug on 50 years of research
01:00:16and investigation into the UFO mystery.
01:00:18The other point that made this particularly controversial
01:00:22was the way in which the decision was announced.
01:00:25There was no proactive statement issued on this.
01:00:30It simply said,
01:00:32the department will not respond to any inquiries on this subject
01:00:36and will no longer investigate sightings.
01:00:42One hurdle confronting those in favor
01:00:44of fully disclosing classified information
01:00:47related to UFOs
01:00:48is the fact that most mainstream scientists believe
01:00:52that the study of alien phenomena
01:00:54is little more than just fringe science.
01:00:58It is this fear of dismissal or ridicule
01:01:02that keeps many scientists hidden in the shadows.
01:01:05Our best scientists who communicate with one another
01:01:09around the world
01:01:10have rules of protocol,
01:01:14which include,
01:01:15they cannot appear to be religious,
01:01:19they cannot believe in flying saucers,
01:01:22and they certainly shouldn't hang around with anybody
01:01:24who believes in flying saucers.
01:01:28But it's all done, you might say,
01:01:30behind closed doors
01:01:31because nobody really wants to draw attention to it.
01:01:35You know, that they understand,
01:01:38you know, that there's a penalty associated
01:01:39with this kind of research,
01:01:41and so consequently,
01:01:43it's done, it's done invisibly.
01:01:46To be located and stopped
01:01:48by worries about peer reviews and so forth,
01:01:51to me is wrong.
01:01:52We can speculate whether there is life outside this plant.
01:01:55We can speculate whether there's been a contact
01:01:58with other civilization.
01:02:00Why not?
01:02:01But as more scientists openly embrace the probability
01:02:05that there is intelligent life existing elsewhere in the universe,
01:02:10will the belief that alien beings are visiting us
01:02:13also become more accepted?
01:02:19What might be the reaction today
01:02:21if extraterrestrials were to actually arrive on Earth
01:02:25and make themselves known to us?
01:02:30Countless science fiction books and films
01:02:33tend to portray aliens
01:02:34coming either to warn us or destroy us.
01:02:38Since the 1960s,
01:02:40people have been thinking about,
01:02:42well, what do we do?
01:02:43Do we have a day the Earth stood still scenario?
01:02:46If aliens come,
01:02:47do they warn us that our planet's facing disaster?
01:02:51Do they attack us the way the Martians did
01:02:54in War of the Worlds?
01:02:55Well, the answer is
01:02:58more complicated than it seems.
01:03:00It's not just somebody landing and saying,
01:03:02take me to your leader.
01:03:09The general consensus today is that
01:03:11if extraterrestrials were to show up tomorrow,
01:03:13they'd be hostile
01:03:15and they would want to enslave us
01:03:17and battle us
01:03:19and destroy us
01:03:21and all this crazy stuff.
01:03:22In my opinion,
01:03:24that won't be the case
01:03:26because any civilization
01:03:27that's mastered to travel interstellar space
01:03:31would be benevolent
01:03:33to a lesser advanced society,
01:03:36technologically speaking.
01:03:39A simple statistic shows
01:03:41that if we make contact
01:03:43with extraterrestrial civilization,
01:03:45we are the new kids on the block.
01:03:47We're the ones who are
01:03:49at the back of the queue
01:03:51when it comes to intelligence.
01:03:53So they'll be teaching us stuff.
01:03:55We won't have a great deal to teach them.
01:03:59There are a wide range of benefits
01:04:01that can be derived
01:04:02from accepting
01:04:03that we have neighbors in the galaxy
01:04:05that are visiting us.
01:04:06There are reports
01:04:07of medical treatments
01:04:08that have been performed
01:04:09for the benefit
01:04:10of several people
01:04:11who have had contact.
01:04:12There are advanced energy technologies.
01:04:14reports are
01:04:15that some of these
01:04:16have been reverse-engineered already
01:04:17and are used in military craft.
01:04:20There are communications technologies.
01:04:24So really,
01:04:25any area of life that we have
01:04:27could be beneficially impacted
01:04:28by acknowledging
01:04:30that there are these
01:04:31other people out there,
01:04:33that they have information,
01:04:35knowledge that they can share with us
01:04:36that would benefit us.
01:04:38It's going to depend
01:04:39on how the discovery comes about.
01:04:41If, in fact,
01:04:42it's a distant radio broadcast,
01:04:44we might expect one thing.
01:04:45If, in fact,
01:04:46there's some type of visitation
01:04:49that fits in with beliefs
01:04:50about UFOs,
01:04:51that might be something else.
01:04:53But, on the whole,
01:04:54I think people are much more
01:04:56prepared for,
01:04:59should we say, contact.
01:05:03Many who believe contact
01:05:05with extraterrestrials
01:05:06is inevitable
01:05:07suggest governments need
01:05:09to prepare themselves.
01:05:10It's a field of study
01:05:12known as exo-politics.
01:05:15Exo-politics poses the question,
01:05:17what should our response
01:05:18be to that situation
01:05:20at a societal level?
01:05:22Not necessarily
01:05:23at a governmental level,
01:05:24but actually individuals.
01:05:26How can we reach out
01:05:28with the hand of friendship?
01:05:30Exo-politics has really been
01:05:31a grassroots movement
01:05:32of people concerned
01:05:34about this issue
01:05:35and want disclosure
01:05:36on the UFO subject,
01:05:37and also want to help
01:05:38organize people locally
01:05:40to get the information
01:05:42out through their governments
01:05:43and make this big change happen.
01:05:46But if we reach out
01:05:47in friendship,
01:05:48what guarantee do we have
01:05:50that it will be returned
01:05:52in kind?
01:05:55Many scientists,
01:05:57including famed theoretical physicist
01:05:59Stephen Hawking,
01:06:00believe alien beings
01:06:02could pose a threat
01:06:03and suggest we do everything possible
01:06:06to prevent contact.
01:06:09If extraterrestrials
01:06:10or aliens were aggressive
01:06:12or warlike
01:06:13and they came here,
01:06:14is it a case where
01:06:15resistance is futile?
01:06:17How do you wipe out life
01:06:19on planet Earth?
01:06:20That's easy.
01:06:21A plague.
01:06:23Simple, no UFOs,
01:06:26no zorching beams
01:06:27from the sky,
01:06:29no explosions,
01:06:30no Empire State Building
01:06:31collapsing,
01:06:32none of that.
01:06:32We can do that.
01:06:34Why can't aliens do that?
01:06:37To think that we would be able
01:06:40to come up with some type
01:06:42of a defense mechanism
01:06:44or have defenses
01:06:45against interstellar
01:06:46traveling society
01:06:48is ludicrous.
01:06:51whether they came
01:06:52as friend
01:06:53or foe,
01:06:54if extraterrestrials
01:06:56did land somewhere
01:06:57in the United States,
01:06:58it's possible
01:06:59the aliens
01:07:01would be greeted
01:07:01by government
01:07:02or military personnel
01:07:03wearing hazmat suits
01:07:05and testing
01:07:06for harmful pathogens
01:07:08and radiation.
01:07:11many conspiracy theorists
01:07:13suspect
01:07:14the government's
01:07:16next step
01:07:16would be to cover up
01:07:18the visitation.
01:07:19They cite as evidence
01:07:21a reputed sighting
01:07:22that took place
01:07:23over Washington, D.C.
01:07:25in 1952.
01:07:26in full view
01:07:28of the entire world,
01:07:30a squadron
01:07:31of formation
01:07:32of UFOs
01:07:33buzzed Washington
01:07:34and fought
01:07:36our own F-93 jet fighters.
01:07:39General Samford
01:07:40willingly
01:07:41and deliberately,
01:07:43maybe on instructions
01:07:44from Harry Truman
01:07:45who was president,
01:07:46lied to the American people.
01:07:48We have received
01:07:50and analyzed
01:07:50between one
01:07:51and two thousand reports.
01:07:53Of this great mass
01:07:54of reports,
01:07:55we have been able
01:07:56adequately to explain
01:07:58the great bulk of them.
01:08:00His own Captain Ruppelt
01:08:03in his own book
01:08:04on flying saucers
01:08:05says Samford was lying.
01:08:08We have the letter
01:08:09from the Air Force
01:08:10to Dean Condon
01:08:12saying deep six UFOs.
01:08:15So,
01:08:15have UFOs come
01:08:16to planet Earth
01:08:17in full view?
01:08:18Have manifested themselves?
01:08:19Have shown themselves?
01:08:21Yes.
01:08:22Did we see it?
01:08:23Yes.
01:08:24Was there a protocol
01:08:26for handling it?
01:08:27Yes.
01:08:28That protocol
01:08:28was called deny.
01:08:31But if an alien visitation
01:08:34proved undeniable,
01:08:35who might be chosen
01:08:37to then speak
01:08:38to those
01:08:38inside the spacecraft?
01:08:41Who could best
01:08:42represent
01:08:42all the nations
01:08:44and interests
01:08:45of Earth?
01:08:46If aliens do land
01:08:47on Earth,
01:08:48I think we should send
01:08:49our best world leaders
01:08:50who are the most
01:08:51open-minded
01:08:52and reasonable,
01:08:53but who also have
01:08:54the ability
01:08:55to defend themselves
01:08:56against those aliens.
01:08:59In my opinion,
01:09:01that's one of the reasons
01:09:01we have a United Nations.
01:09:03Yes,
01:09:04it prevents wars
01:09:05and delivers food.
01:09:07But on the other hand,
01:09:08just imagine
01:09:09the Security Council
01:09:10itself convening
01:09:12to deal with aliens
01:09:13an image on a big screen
01:09:15at the United Nations.
01:09:16The answer is,
01:09:17I think it all happened
01:09:18back in the 1940s,
01:09:20and that was one
01:09:21of the reasons
01:09:22that Roosevelt
01:09:23and Eleanor Roosevelt
01:09:24pushed so hard
01:09:26for the formation
01:09:27of a United Nations
01:09:29to replace
01:09:29the League of Nations.
01:09:31Somebody had to
01:09:32confront the aliens.
01:09:34The notion
01:09:35that our leaders,
01:09:37elected or otherwise,
01:09:39should speak
01:09:39on our behalf,
01:09:40I don't necessarily
01:09:41think that makes sense.
01:09:44There are a lot of people
01:09:45who might have
01:09:46better ideas
01:09:47than the people
01:09:47who are in government.
01:09:49I'd like to see
01:09:50a profoundly democratic,
01:09:53with a small d,
01:09:55unauthoritarian interaction
01:09:56with aliens.
01:09:59Currently,
01:10:00there are no known
01:10:01official protocols
01:10:02in place
01:10:03for an alien visitation.
01:10:05But there are those
01:10:06who think
01:10:07that contact
01:10:08with extraterrestrials
01:10:09is imminent,
01:10:10and that our world leaders
01:10:12must plan for the event
01:10:13now.
01:10:14We're not alone
01:10:15in the universe.
01:10:16We have friends
01:10:18and relatives
01:10:18out there
01:10:19in the galaxies.
01:10:23And we need
01:10:24to take on this task
01:10:26one way or the other
01:10:26of just getting
01:10:27the job done
01:10:28and getting to the point
01:10:29where we're considering
01:10:30the practical details
01:10:32of interacting
01:10:33with these friends
01:10:34and neighbors out there.
01:10:36Who is responsible
01:10:37for that relationship?
01:10:39Well,
01:10:40the State Department isn't.
01:10:41The United Nations isn't.
01:10:43And I think
01:10:43this is a very big problem.
01:10:45So there needs
01:10:46to be a diplomatic effort
01:10:47to make contact
01:10:49with these
01:10:49interstellar civilizations
01:10:51in such a way
01:10:52that it puts
01:10:53wiser people
01:10:54in charge of that.
01:10:56Even if you don't
01:10:58corporately believe
01:10:59in extraterrestrials,
01:11:00if you think
01:11:00the possibility
01:11:02of alien visitation
01:11:04is vanishingly small,
01:11:05the consequences,
01:11:07if it does happen,
01:11:08are immense,
01:11:09and therefore,
01:11:10it's prudent
01:11:10to have something
01:11:11in place to deal with it.
01:11:13Personally,
01:11:14I think it would be
01:11:14very, very exciting.
01:11:15I mean,
01:11:15it would be just like
01:11:16the first time
01:11:17the explorers came
01:11:19from Europe
01:11:19to the Americas
01:11:20and discovered
01:11:21a whole new culture
01:11:22and they had to interact.
01:11:23Hopefully,
01:11:23it won't work out
01:11:24as some of the bad things
01:11:25that occurred then.
01:11:25It would be
01:11:26a more positive experience
01:11:27and maybe we've learned
01:11:28from that
01:11:28and we can go forward.
01:11:30What would happen
01:11:31after any potential
01:11:33extraterrestrial contact
01:11:34is open
01:11:35to much speculation.
01:11:37But most people
01:11:38concede one thing.
01:11:39The world as we know it
01:11:41would change dramatically.
01:11:44The result would be
01:11:46that the fundamentalist
01:11:48orthodox belief systems
01:11:49of every organized religion
01:11:51on earth
01:11:52would collapse.
01:11:54Meaning that
01:11:55it would really bring
01:11:56into question
01:11:56the origins
01:11:57of the human race,
01:11:59the Genesis stories
01:12:02and a whole lot
01:12:02of other issues.
01:12:03The very structures
01:12:05of government
01:12:05and the very structures
01:12:07of religion
01:12:09will crumble.
01:12:12But in 2008,
01:12:14a stunning announcement
01:12:16was made
01:12:16from a very surprising source.
01:12:20Proof to some
01:12:21that miracles,
01:12:23like aliens,
01:12:24do indeed exist.
01:12:30The Vatican, Rome.
01:12:33This walled enclave
01:12:35has been the center of power
01:12:37for the Catholic Church
01:12:38since the 5th century.
01:12:40It's not only
01:12:41the Pope's residence
01:12:42but a place of homage
01:12:44for one billion Catholics
01:12:46and represents
01:12:48nearly 2,000 years
01:12:50of Christian teaching
01:12:51and tradition.
01:12:54But in 2008,
01:12:56the Vatican made
01:12:57an announcement
01:12:58that some say
01:12:59might threaten
01:13:00its own existence.
01:13:07The chief astronomer
01:13:09of the Vatican Observatory,
01:13:11Father Gabriel Funes,
01:13:13acknowledged the possibility
01:13:15alien life exists
01:13:17on other planets.
01:13:19They basically said
01:13:21that belief
01:13:22in planetary life
01:13:23outside of Earth
01:13:24does not negate
01:13:26one's belief in God.
01:13:27Now, 500 years ago,
01:13:29if the Vatican
01:13:29would have said that,
01:13:30they would have burned
01:13:31everybody on the stake.
01:13:35The present Pope Benedict,
01:13:36of course,
01:13:37has a very scientific bent
01:13:38and he respects
01:13:40intellectual life
01:13:41in a way that
01:13:42is quite extraordinary.
01:13:44He seemed quite open
01:13:45to entertain the idea.
01:13:46What if there is life
01:13:47on other planets?
01:13:48It's certainly
01:13:49an interesting question
01:13:50for a Christian
01:13:50to approach it scientifically.
01:13:52It challenges
01:13:53your belief
01:13:54of how much
01:13:55of this
01:13:55you attribute
01:13:56to God.
01:14:02Many wondered
01:14:03about the church's
01:14:04motives and timing.
01:14:08Why,
01:14:09after centuries
01:14:10of belief
01:14:10in man
01:14:11as God's
01:14:12supreme creation
01:14:13and the only
01:14:14intelligent life
01:14:15in the universe,
01:14:17did the Vatican
01:14:18make an announcement
01:14:19that could turn
01:14:20Christianity
01:14:21on its head?
01:14:22Did they know something
01:14:24the rest of us
01:14:25did not?
01:14:28This is something
01:14:29that is completely new
01:14:32in the history
01:14:33of the church
01:14:34that the extraterrestrial
01:14:38question
01:14:38is not only addressed,
01:14:41but at the same time,
01:14:43it's okay.
01:14:45I mean,
01:14:46that is a major
01:14:47change
01:14:48in opinion,
01:14:50a major change
01:14:51in the status quo.
01:14:54And I ask,
01:14:56why?
01:14:58Would it have
01:14:59huge ramifications?
01:15:00Of course.
01:15:02Does it change anything?
01:15:03Of course.
01:15:05But at the same time,
01:15:06would that change
01:15:07religion or belief
01:15:09in God?
01:15:10Not really.
01:15:11Some people say,
01:15:13well,
01:15:13the Catholic church
01:15:14must know something.
01:15:16Maybe they're trying
01:15:17to get ahead
01:15:17of the game here.
01:15:22On the other hand,
01:15:23it may just be
01:15:24that they're being
01:15:25very clever
01:15:26and simply trying
01:15:27to cover all the bases
01:15:29in case
01:15:30there is some
01:15:31great announcement
01:15:32or discovery
01:15:33about alien life.
01:15:35Because make no mistake
01:15:36about it,
01:15:37if it is announced
01:15:38that alien life
01:15:40has been discovered,
01:15:41people are going
01:15:43to look
01:15:43to their religious leaders
01:15:45for some sort
01:15:47of guidance
01:15:47about this,
01:15:48whether it's
01:15:49Christians,
01:15:50Jews,
01:15:52Muslims,
01:15:54Hindus.
01:15:55If extraterrestrial
01:15:57life was found,
01:15:59then the church
01:16:01would react,
01:16:02presumably,
01:16:03as it does
01:16:04with any data,
01:16:06see what there is.
01:16:10I don't think
01:16:11there would be
01:16:11any conflict
01:16:12in the way
01:16:13that we look
01:16:14on our humanity.
01:16:15What we would find
01:16:17is that God
01:16:19creates intelligent
01:16:20life in a variety
01:16:21of ways.
01:16:23And I think
01:16:24what we would learn
01:16:25from that
01:16:26is we can't restrict
01:16:27God to any one
01:16:29mode of making
01:16:31intelligent life.
01:16:32The idea
01:16:34that intelligent
01:16:35life exists
01:16:36elsewhere in
01:16:37the universe
01:16:37has been debated
01:16:39by religious
01:16:39leaders,
01:16:40historians,
01:16:42and scientists.
01:16:44But not everyone
01:16:45agrees how its
01:16:46proof would
01:16:47affect human
01:16:48spirituality
01:16:49or the many
01:16:50religious institutions.
01:16:52What would
01:16:52happen to our
01:16:53interpretation
01:16:54of the book
01:16:55of Genesis?
01:16:57Well,
01:16:57the book of
01:16:58Genesis
01:16:58looks at the
01:17:00universe
01:17:00from the point
01:17:01of view of
01:17:02Earth.
01:17:02We look at
01:17:02the sun,
01:17:03we look at
01:17:03the moon,
01:17:04we look at
01:17:04the stars.
01:17:06So,
01:17:07to realize
01:17:07that the Earth
01:17:08is just one
01:17:10small pale
01:17:11blue dot
01:17:12in this immense
01:17:14universe,
01:17:14I think it would
01:17:16only expand
01:17:17our interpretation
01:17:17of Genesis.
01:17:18I don't think
01:17:19it would
01:17:20change it
01:17:21in any
01:17:21fundamental way.
01:17:24It's an interesting
01:17:24question for
01:17:25Christianity in general
01:17:26since Christianity
01:17:27would teach that
01:17:28salvation comes
01:17:29through Jesus
01:17:29who was apparently
01:17:31an Earthling.
01:17:33what do you do
01:17:34if there are
01:17:34people on Mars?
01:17:35Are they saved
01:17:37according to our
01:17:37viewpoint?
01:17:39I don't know.
01:17:42Christians have
01:17:42always had this
01:17:43problem that if
01:17:44there are aliens
01:17:45out there,
01:17:46are they not to be
01:17:46saved?
01:17:47It's not a problem
01:17:48for Jews,
01:17:49it's certainly not a
01:17:49problem for Buddhists
01:17:50or Hindus,
01:17:51but Christians are in
01:17:52a particular fix
01:17:53for a very simple
01:17:54reason.
01:17:55The Christianity
01:17:56alone among the
01:17:56world's religions
01:17:57has an incarnation.
01:17:59What they mean by
01:18:00that is that God
01:18:01became incarnate
01:18:02in the form of
01:18:03Jesus Christ
01:18:04in order to be
01:18:05the saviour.
01:18:09When you talk to
01:18:09Christians,
01:18:10they sort of say,
01:18:11oh, well,
01:18:11there isn't a problem
01:18:12really because,
01:18:13you know,
01:18:13we've accommodated
01:18:14Galileo,
01:18:15we've accommodated
01:18:16Darwin,
01:18:16why can't we
01:18:17accommodate E.T.?
01:18:18Well, I think
01:18:19there's a big
01:18:20difference.
01:18:22I think science
01:18:24and religion
01:18:24have more in
01:18:25common than
01:18:26perhaps the
01:18:27popular perception
01:18:28suggests.
01:18:31On one hand,
01:18:33we have science
01:18:34which deals with
01:18:35reason and fact.
01:18:36On the other hand,
01:18:38we have religion
01:18:38which deals with
01:18:39faith.
01:18:42Science is an
01:18:43evolving proposition
01:18:45and what we know
01:18:46today will almost
01:18:47certainly be
01:18:48reformed and maybe
01:18:50even replaced
01:18:51at some point
01:18:52in the future.
01:18:53So to think that
01:18:54science somehow
01:18:55provides the truth
01:18:56in contrast to
01:18:58religion,
01:18:58I think is a
01:18:59mistake.
01:19:01While scientists
01:19:02and religious leaders
01:19:03may still ponder
01:19:05the notion of
01:19:05aliens visiting
01:19:06Earth,
01:19:08ancient astronaut
01:19:09theorists claim
01:19:10that the evidence
01:19:11exists in plain
01:19:12sight around
01:19:13the world.
01:19:15But if this
01:19:16theory was
01:19:16accepted,
01:19:17would we have to
01:19:18change our beliefs
01:19:19about our
01:19:20knowledge,
01:19:21our history,
01:19:22and the very
01:19:23beginnings of
01:19:24human civilization.
01:19:34For thousands of
01:19:36years, humans have
01:19:38recorded events that
01:19:39seem to suggest
01:19:40otherworldly beings
01:19:42came down from the
01:19:43skies to visit Earth.
01:19:46These ancient
01:19:47visitations represent
01:19:49the foundations of
01:19:51those who believe
01:19:51Earth was visited
01:19:52in the past by
01:19:54advanced beings
01:19:54from other planets.
01:19:56These sightings are
01:19:58also said to explain
01:19:59many mysteries
01:20:01surrounding our
01:20:02past.
01:20:03The most important
01:20:05was religion.
01:20:06The gods have
01:20:07descended to our
01:20:08ancestor time.
01:20:09Now it enters
01:20:10into the holy books,
01:20:11into mythology.
01:20:13Now later,
01:20:14people try,
01:20:15recent people try
01:20:16to understand this.
01:20:17They make out
01:20:18religions of it.
01:20:20But the core
01:20:21is extraterrestrials
01:20:22have come here.
01:20:23That was the beginning
01:20:24of all the big
01:20:25religions.
01:20:28There are two main
01:20:29components why we
01:20:31are who we are
01:20:33today as a species.
01:20:35One, someone
01:20:37tampered with our
01:20:38genetic makeup.
01:20:39And two, technology.
01:20:43Because all of a
01:20:44sudden, we were
01:20:45doing and building
01:20:47things that we would
01:20:49still have difficulties
01:20:50recreating today.
01:20:54And the ancient
01:20:56texts are very clear
01:20:57that many of our
01:21:00achievements in the
01:21:01past happened due
01:21:03to a direct
01:21:04intervention of
01:21:06extraterrestrials that
01:21:07arrived from the
01:21:09skies.
01:21:11Ancient astronaut
01:21:13theorists also cite
01:21:15as evidence the
01:21:16amazing similarities
01:21:17between isolated
01:21:18cultures all over the
01:21:20planet.
01:21:20planet.
01:21:21Why did different
01:21:22civilizations build
01:21:24immense megalithic
01:21:25structures to honor
01:21:26otherworldly beings?
01:21:29Why do so many
01:21:30ancient texts seem
01:21:32to reference men
01:21:33flying in the sky?
01:21:37And why do the
01:21:38ancient Egyptians,
01:21:39Hopi Indians,
01:21:41and the Dogon tribe
01:21:42of North Africa all
01:21:44believe their ancestors
01:21:45came from what we
01:21:47know as the
01:21:48constellation Sirius?
01:21:49star system?
01:21:50If the extraterrestrials
01:21:51wanted to leave
01:21:52behind a message of
01:21:54where they came
01:21:55from, then it would
01:21:58serve them very well
01:22:00to build those
01:22:01structures with a
01:22:03reference to their
01:22:05location of origin.
01:22:07So, if we have
01:22:08connections to the
01:22:10Sirius star system,
01:22:11well, it would lend
01:22:12us to believe that
01:22:14here we have a
01:22:15reference of where
01:22:17they might come
01:22:18from.
01:22:21The question of
01:22:23extraterrestrial life
01:22:24is as old as
01:22:25civilization itself.
01:22:28Ancient astronaut
01:22:29theorists, as well as
01:22:31many noted scientists,
01:22:32point to the immense
01:22:34size of the universe
01:22:35and conceive that
01:22:37other beings must exist
01:22:39somewhere else
01:22:40besides Earth.
01:22:42But the question
01:22:43remains.
01:22:45Did aliens visit us
01:22:47in the past?
01:22:48And is it
01:22:49happening again?
01:22:52The way we look at
01:22:53history is very
01:22:55fragile.
01:22:56Any discovery which
01:22:57is made somewhere can
01:22:58change the way we look
01:22:59upon history.
01:23:00I think if we were
01:23:02to identify that an
01:23:04alien presence has been
01:23:06here on Earth in the
01:23:07past, I think there
01:23:08are two very important
01:23:10questions.
01:23:11Did E.T. just come by
01:23:12and visit and then
01:23:14disappear?
01:23:15Or did E.T. come,
01:23:17stay and contribute
01:23:18to civilization?
01:23:20I think the second
01:23:22one is far more
01:23:23important because it
01:23:23shows us far more.
01:23:25It actually rewrites
01:23:27mankind's identity
01:23:28rather than just
01:23:29whether or not some
01:23:31extraterrestrial being
01:23:32came here on a
01:23:33holiday and then left
01:23:34without really leaving
01:23:35something behind.
01:23:37In all of the ancient
01:23:38texts, there is one
01:23:41thing that is very
01:23:43clear, and that is
01:23:45that these gods one
01:23:46day will return.
01:23:52But short of an alien
01:23:54spacecraft landing on the
01:23:56White House lawn,
01:23:57ancient astronaut
01:23:58theorists know there will
01:24:00always be skeptics.
01:24:02People are always looking
01:24:04for an ultimate proof of
01:24:06the existence of
01:24:06extraterrestrial intelligent
01:24:08beings.
01:24:08But I think a more
01:24:09useful and honest
01:24:12question is how much
01:24:14and what kind of
01:24:15evidence would be
01:24:16enough for you to
01:24:19believe that they're
01:24:20out there, that they've
01:24:21been visiting us?
01:24:23I believe through the
01:24:25experiences that shamans
01:24:26have been documenting and
01:24:27reporting for tens of
01:24:29thousands of years that
01:24:30we are in contact with
01:24:32entities and beings that
01:24:34are not of this earth.
01:24:36But precisely what those
01:24:37entities and beings are
01:24:39remains to be
01:24:40established.
01:24:42There is evidence that
01:24:44indicates that it's
01:24:45possible that humans
01:24:47were visited by
01:24:47extraterrestrials in the
01:24:49distant past.
01:24:50And if we are too
01:24:52quick to discard that
01:24:53possibility, then we
01:24:55might be shutting
01:24:55ourselves out from
01:24:56something that might be
01:24:57really fascinating and
01:24:58might take us to a next
01:25:00level that we can't even
01:25:01imagine.
01:25:04It's very possible that
01:25:06those extraterrestrials
01:25:08who've allegedly been
01:25:09coming here for
01:25:11thousands of years, I
01:25:12mean, they are us.
01:25:13They look like us.
01:25:15And in fact, that's part
01:25:17again of the Bible in
01:25:19that the God or the
01:25:22gods created us in
01:25:24their image.
01:25:26And we are to be like
01:25:29them, we are to look
01:25:31like them, we are to
01:25:32have the technology they
01:25:34have.
01:25:35We're to go into space
01:25:37just like they did.
01:25:41I think there is life,
01:25:42simple life, bacterial
01:25:43life, microbial life on
01:25:45other planets.
01:25:46I think we're going to
01:25:47find that.
01:25:48And who knows, maybe one
01:25:50day we'll find some other
01:25:51planet that's capable of
01:25:53sustaining life, that has
01:25:55evolved people over a long
01:25:57period of time that are
01:25:58also looking up at the
01:25:59stars, wondering, is there
01:26:01anybody else out there?
01:26:02Are we the only ones?
01:26:03We are a species of
01:26:05explorers.
01:26:07So ultimately, we will
01:26:09come across some other
01:26:11type of intelligence.
01:26:14And when that happens, if
01:26:17that society, technologically
01:26:20speaking, is primitive,
01:26:22we'll become ancient
01:26:24astronauts with that
01:26:26culture.
01:26:29Human history has become
01:26:30too much a matter of
01:26:32dogma, taught by
01:26:34professionals in ivory
01:26:36towers, as though it's all
01:26:38fact.
01:26:40Actually, much of human
01:26:41history is up for grabs.
01:26:43The further back you go,
01:26:44the more that the history
01:26:46that's taught in the
01:26:46schools and universities
01:26:47begins to look like some
01:26:48kind of fairy story.
01:26:51We have logic, we have
01:26:53intuition, we have our
01:26:54senses, and to limit
01:26:56ourselves through the
01:26:57scientific route is a
01:26:58mistake.
01:26:59We can send people on the
01:27:00moon, we can plan
01:27:02journeys to Mars, we can
01:27:05make cell phones, but we
01:27:07haven't explained the
01:27:08fundamental questions that
01:27:10we should be dealing
01:27:11with.
01:27:12Where do we come from?
01:27:14What are we supposed to do
01:27:16here?
01:27:17And where are we going?
01:27:18We really have not come
01:27:20with the answers, and we
01:27:21know no better than the
01:27:23ancients that we're
01:27:24trying to explain.
01:27:26Exploring the ancient
01:27:28astronaut theory is the
01:27:30ultimate quest to find
01:27:31out where did we come
01:27:34from, how did it all
01:27:35begin, and most
01:27:37importantly, who are we?
01:27:41And the ancient
01:27:42astronaut theory has the
01:27:44capability of answering
01:27:46answering all those
01:27:48questions.
