00:01Northwestern did not open its new home quietly. The Wildcats turned the first game at the
00:06rebuilt Ryan Field into a spectacle before defeating Penn State 34-13. The privately
00:11financed stadium reportedly cost around $875 million, making it the most expensive college
00:17football venue ever built. Yet Northwestern intentionally reduced capacity from approximately
00:2247,000 seats to just 35,000, giving Ryan Field the smallest capacity in the Big Ten.
00:28The strategy was to bring fans closer to the field and create a more intense atmosphere.
00:33And opening night delivered exactly that. Northwestern rushed for 413 yards,
00:39controlled the game, and fed off the energy inside its new home. The Wildcats spent more
00:44to build something smaller, but their dominant debut showed why the project was designed around
00:48proximity, noise, and a genuine home-filled advantage.
