00:24all right welcome back to made by dad he does the making i do the talking
00:29same deal as always so today it's cold this one's ice age the first movie from 2002 manny the mammoth
00:39diego the saber-tooth sid the sloth and scrat chasing his acorn one quick thing before we go
00:47which ice age character was your favorite growing up scrat sid diego manny drop it in the comments
00:56i read every one to dad and translate it for him and if you're new here subscribe it really does
01:03help a small channel like ours okay let's get into it so scrat the squirrel here's the thing
01:11most people don't know scrat was never supposed to be a character he was made for the opening scene
01:18a throwaway gag 30 seconds to set the tone before the real story started he doesn't talk he's not in
01:27the plot he was supposed to disappear and then test audiences saw him and they lost their minds
01:37kids adults everyone wanted more of the squirrel so the studio went back and kept adding him
01:44and by the end the squirrel with no lines became the most famous thing in the whole franchise
01:50five movies 20 years still chasing that acorn the joke that wouldn't die
02:00all right something about the animals because unlike most movie creatures these were real
02:08diego diego's a saber tooth smilodon they lived right alongside mammoths in that same kind of cold
02:15and they went extinct only about 10 000 years ago in geological terms that's yesterday
02:23the teeth were real too up to seven inches long and surprisingly fragile scientists think they couldn't
02:32bite through bone so the cat had to wrestle its prey down first not a fast hunter a strong one
02:40and the mammoth here's the part i find kind of amazing mammoths weren't ancient the last ones were still
02:49alive around 4 000 years ago on an island off siberia that's after the pyramids were built mammoths and
02:56egyptians overlapped so this isn't just a cartoon somewhere a long time ago a mammoth and a saber tooth
03:05really did stand on the same patch of ice minus the talking all right sid because sid almost sounded
03:14completely different the voice is john leguizamo and when he got the part he had no idea what a sloth
03:22should sound like so he tried by his own count about 30 different voices different accents different
03:29pitches nothing stuck then he did what any sensible actor does he went and watched documentaries about
03:38actual sloths and he noticed something sloths store food in their cheeks they keep it there for hours
03:45because they're too slow to bother eating it right away so he tried talking with that food tucked in
03:53his cheeks the tongue getting in the way and out came that lisp that was it that was sid the
04:02most quoted
04:02voice in the franchise and it came from watching an animal chew now the funny thing is on paper sid
04:10is
04:10the annoying one the one nobody wants around but he's also the one holding the group together the mammoth
04:18and the cat would have gone their separate ways in the first 10 minutes without him every family has a
04:25sid ours too if i'm honest i'm just not saying which one of us it is now a bit about
04:34ice because in
04:37miniature ice is a strange problem snow is easy it's white it's fluffy you pile it on and it reads
04:46as snow
04:47ice doesn't work like that ice has depth light goes into it and comes back out blue paint something light
04:57blue and it doesn't look like ice it looks like a wall painted light blue so you can't paint ice
05:06as a
05:06color you have to fake depth on something that's completely flat thin layers one over another lighter
05:15where the ice would be thin colder and darker where it would be thick and you can't check as you
05:21go it
05:23only reads as ice once you step back and take in the whole thing at once which means a lot
05:30of hours
05:31where it looks like nothing and then if you got it right one moment where it suddenly looks cold that's
05:39the part of this hobby nobody sees the waiting all right one more story and this one has an ending
05:48ice age wasn't made by disney or pixar or dreamworks it came from a small studio called blue sky in
05:55new
05:55york it was their very first feature film nobody expected much from it it cost about 60 million dollars
06:04which for an animated movie is cheap and it went on to make close to 400 million it was even
06:12nominated
06:13for the oscar for best animated feature the same year is spirited away so it didn't win
06:19but still that one movie built the whole studio five ice age films rio 20 years of work and then
06:31in 2021
06:32disney bought the company that owned blue sky and shut it down just like that but before the doors
06:40closed the animators made one last short 20 years after the first movie and in it finally for the first
06:48time ever scrat gets the acorn he sits down he eats it 20 years of chasing and the last thing
06:58that studio
06:59ever made was letting him win i think about that every time scratch shows up in one of dad's builds
07:0620 years and he still hasn't gotten a break all right winding down ice age is underneath everything
07:14a movie about three animals who shouldn't be together a mammoth who wants to be alone a cat
07:21who's supposed to be hunting them and a sloth nobody wants around and somehow they turn into a family
07:28i think that's why it's stuck with a whole generation not the jokes not even the squirrel it's the idea
07:34that
07:35your family is whoever walks through the cold with you that's the part of the story dad went with not
07:40the
07:41ending the beginning when it could still go either way made by dad that's the whole thing
