Hundreds of high schools in France close as new protests against conditions erupt

The students say their school hours are excessively long, conditions inadequate including overheated classrooms, and that there are too many staff absences.

00:00Student protests across France have intensified, with around 400 high schools expected to stay
00:05closed after Friday as demonstrations over school conditions continue.
00:10Students are protesting long school hours, staff shortages and inadequate conditions
00:15including overheated classrooms.
00:19The Education Minister, Edouard Geffre, said 564 schools had faced actions or disruptions
00:25since the start of the day.
00:27The minister added that at least 65 staff members and around 107 students have been
00:31injured since the protests began.
00:34Around 2,000 people have been taken into police custody, 90% of them minors.
00:40Students have accused police of excessive force, including the frequent use of tear gas.
00:45The government says the students' grievances are legitimate but has condemned what it calls
00:50urban violence.
00:52Geffre said the movement was being held hostage by ultra-violent fringe groups.
