Six years earlier, Liang Sen (played by Tony Leung Ka-fai) parted ways with his beloved Mei Yi (played by Anita Mui) to join the underground resistance in the interior, while Mei Yi—following arrangements made by Mr. Wu (played by Kenneth Tsang)—became a nightclub singer. In 1941, the outbreak of the Pacific War plunged the world into turmoil. Liang Sen and his revolutionary comrades returned to the Shanghai International Settlement; that very night, they witnessed the brutal murder of five Japanese monks—a killing orchestrated by the Japanese national Shirakawa (played by Jun Kunimura). Liang trailed Shirakawa to the nightclub, where a fight ensued; Shirakawa was killed, and Liang sustained multiple injuries. While recovering, Liang Sen reunited with Mei Yi, and their old flame was rekindled, making it impossible to let go. Shirakawa’s death exacerbated tensions within the Settlement, prompting Tie Zemin (played by Norman Chu)—the ruthless head of the "76 Bureau" secret police—to launch a merciless crackdown on the underground resistance...
