Après 30 ans dans le couloir de la mort, Christa Pike devait devenir la première femme exécutée dans le Tennessee depuis plus de 200 ans. Mais sa mise à mort a viré au fiasco. Condamnée à mort pour un meurtre commis en 1995 alors qu’elle avait 18 ans, Pike a survécu au protocole d'injection létale. Selon des témoins de l'exécution cités par les médias, elle a continué à respirer et à ronfler de façon audible après avoir reçu les deux injections censées la tuer. Elle a été transportée à l'hôpital. Une enquête est ouverte et les exécutions sont suspendues dans le Tennessee après cet échec, sans précédent aux Etats-Unis.
