01:50Not only did Shingo beat Tomohiro Ishii during last year's G1,
01:56but Shingo's first defense of the Never Openweight title
01:59was a victorious one against Ishii this past February.
02:11And there's always something special, Rock,
02:13when Ishii and Shingo are opposite one another,
02:17whether it's been in singles matches or even in tag team matches,
02:21they are just really drawn to each other.
02:25No, 100%.
02:26I mean stylistically,
02:28you put these guys in the ring and you know that is going to be a barn burner.
02:44Certainly Ishii's 0-3 record is not representative of a lack of effort.
02:51He has put forth the exact same intensity that we are quite accustomed to with Tomohiro Ishii,
03:01but the defeats are the defeats.
03:03Minoru Suzuki got the win, Will Osprey got the win.
03:10and 0-3 is not where Ishii wants to be,
03:15but a chance to make things right.
03:33And you gotta love the intensity.
03:37I love it.
03:38Yes.
03:39And we saw that intensity in the last block match for Ishii.
03:45Third defeat in this one was against Kota Ibushi.
03:48Even after the bell, Ishii, who was half out of it,
03:52was still wanting to fight Ibushi.
03:54And the bell sounds and this main event is underway.
03:56They went 22-41 last year.
04:00And let's see how far these guys go this year in the quest for victory in two points.
04:07A shoulder tackle.
04:08They reintroduce themselves.
04:11Center ring.
04:26Already big exchange.
04:40Shingo off the ropes.
04:43Ishii.
04:44Oh.
04:51And Ishii puts Shingo down.
04:55The style of Ishii really matches his personality.
04:58That stubbornness.
05:00That don't tell me what to do streak.
05:02It's incredible.
05:04Mm-hmm.
05:05No, 100 percent, Gavin.
05:07These two are so interesting, too, because they share a mentor in Tenryu.
05:14And Tenryu has really affected how each one wrestles stylistically-wise.
05:20They both use the chop and the straight right hand as well.
05:27We've seen Ishii use those Tenryu-style kicks to the forehead.
05:35And both are premier trash talkers as well.
05:50And Shingo absorbing those kicks somehow some way.
05:56Uh-oh, wait a minute now.
05:59And Ishii avoids the neck breaker.
06:10Ishii with a shot to the midsection.
06:12Looking to send Shingo into the barricade.
06:14And he does.
06:19We talked about Ishii in his tournament opener.
06:24Only going for one pin attempt against Minoru Suzuki.
06:29And actually didn't get any pin attempts.
06:31And only the one that gave him the victory as Shingo collides into Ishii.
06:37But against Shingo, everybody's trying to pin him to win.
06:4018 pin attempts against Takagi so far.
06:42The highest in the block as they hammer each other with forearms.
06:45But some of the fight has been taken out of Shingo.
06:52Rechu's doing a good job here.
06:53Letting the athletes almost punch themselves out on the floor.
06:57Before beginning to count.
06:59Oh!
07:00Oh no!
07:04Ishii came off of that rail like a shotgun.
07:08Absorbed it.
07:09But could not stop that lariat.
07:13But now Rechu's out.
07:15Coming out.
07:16Checking on both guys.
07:17Letting them both know to get back in the ring.
07:19Because he's going to start the count.
07:21One.
07:22Two.
07:24Three.
07:25Four.
07:27Five.
07:27Six.
07:28Seven.
07:31Eight.
07:33Rocky was like Ishii wouldn't even give in to the barricade.
07:37Refusing to show pain as he came back out.
07:40That's how stubborn he is.
07:42It's true.
07:44And rolling him underneath the bottom rope.
07:47Again, they met towards the tail end of the tournament in Yokohama.
07:53And both had been worn down, but they still just brought the absolute best out of each other in the
07:58Senton.
08:00Directly into the barrel chest of Tomohiro Ishii.
08:04We're now in just the fourth match of nine they will have in the tournament.
08:11And Shingo will keep him right there.
08:15Shingo will look for some elbows here.
08:19Shingo will look for some elbows here.
08:19Shingo, Shingo, Shingo, Shingo!
08:25Shingo, Shingo, Shingo!
08:26And the knee drop is there.
08:30Rocky, I've been meaning to ask you.
08:33Ishii has a very, very tight wrap around that right arm.
08:37A protective sleeve.
08:39Is that a bicep issue?
08:41Is it a nerve issue?
08:42Do you have any insights?
08:44You know, I would say it probably has to do with the nerve issue.
08:50You know, he does often, if he gets dumped or something, you'll see him kind of grab that trap.
08:57And I think, though, that's also the fact that he throws a lot of elbows on that right side.
09:06So that also might be just something helpful in keeping that elbow nice and tight.
09:11Because he's going to deliver a lot of forearms and elbows on that side.
09:15That thing starts to tender up after a while.
09:20So Ishii fires back with a couple of shots, but Shingo puts Ishii down in the corner with the headbutt.
09:35I would love for Chris Sampson to give us a number of how many forearms Ishii throws in a match.
09:41That's a great stat. I would want to know it.
09:44And how it's parlayed into victory.
09:48Cause he probably throws the most out of anyone.
10:02Just blistering each other.
10:04Wow. Picking up the pace.
10:09Double-handed chop.
10:12Stops forward. Gets caught. No Shigami. No wait.
10:16Vertigo suplex. Yes!
10:24So many times we were captivated by the strikes that Ishii is throwing, but sometimes, folks, look at Ishii's feet
10:31as he repositions, changes direction, and then goes on the offense.
10:35It's tremendous for, you know, for a man that's built the way he is to have such light feet.
10:42I mean, you're absolutely right, Kevin. I mean, he has light feet.
10:46He is very quick as well.
10:50You know, we never, people never really talk about how speedy Ishii can be.
11:01Here we go.
11:05His spin on the Tenryu staple.
11:14Oh, heavy forearms.
11:19Now those Tenryu style kicks to the forehead, short ones.
11:24Muddying up your opponent.
11:27Hopefully you'll catch him in the eye.
11:36Just flicking those kicks out.
11:38Trying to prod and provoke Takagi into firing back, making a mistake. Takagi reverses the Irish move.
11:44Bishi comes out of the buckle.
11:46Go!
11:48Wow.
11:49Great combo for Shingo.
12:00And this is a...
12:01And this is a...
12:01Go ahead, Brock.
12:02I was gonna say, this is a match that the New Japan loyalists, the New Japan fans here in Cork
12:08and Hall would only want, I mean for sure would want as the main event here tonight.
12:13Here's a cover, two, and a kick out.
12:22So now Shingo Takagi, thinking about a pumping bomber.
12:28He's gonna have to help Ishii up to his feet in order to be able to deliver the move.
12:33And certainly unlike what we saw with Switchblade Jay White, the only reason why Ishii's down on his face is
12:39because of the punishment that he's absorbed.
12:46Oh!
12:47Oh!
12:50Doesn't even phase him though.
12:52Nope.
12:54Refuses to let those kicks phase him.
13:00And now just say, go ahead.
13:09Ten-row style kicks of his own.
13:11Oh!
13:12In the windpipe.
13:21Man, Ishii...
13:23When he starts throwing those forearms, you can tell.
13:27Up in the windpipe.
13:29It's like the rinse do.
13:35He doesn't do it all the time.
13:38But when he does, it is a difference maker.
13:48And now he's wiping his boots on Shingo's head.
14:00On the way, Shingo catches that boot.
14:03Oh!
14:03And he shoots one up into the throat.
14:05He got him with that one.
14:09I have yet to see Shingo do this in New Japan.
14:14Now the right hand, left hand.
14:17Oh!
14:19Oh!
14:19Oh, man.
14:21This is getting dangerous, Kevin.
14:28Oh, man.
14:29Ishii's in a bad way.
14:31Shingo caught him by surprise with trying to mirror what the other does.
14:38Yeah, Uno's gonna have to really keep an eye out for both these guys' safety.
14:44No Shigami, no Shigami.
14:47No Shigami, no Shigami.
14:47Got it!
14:51Nishi's right knee jammed as well, but...
14:56Where Shingo goes is...
14:58On the upper body.
15:00Wait a minute.
15:01Trying to wheelbarrow him.
15:02Yes!
15:03Gads him.
15:11I can't imagine the strength that's required to deliver that move, Rocky.
15:16That's why I don't pick anybody up, Kevin.
15:19Here we go.
15:20Sliding Larian delivers.
15:22Just drilled him.
15:24Here's a cover, too.
15:25And a kick out.
15:26I fully expected Tomohiro Ishii to kick out because, after all, he is Ishii.
15:33And he could absorb inhumane amounts of punishment and still continue to fight.
15:39Oi! Oi! Oi! Oi! Oi!
15:45Voice not quite what it was, thanks to Tomohiro Ishii, but Shingo now.
15:51Looking to put him down. Swing and a miss.
15:56Wow, a lot of misses, though.
16:02Shingo nearly beat Ishii to the ropes, and Ishii...
16:06Here's some of those quick feet we talked about underneath the pumping bomber!
16:10Oh, but Shingo puts it down.
16:12Oh, and Ishii's back on his feet!
16:13It's Shingo who won't stay down, my god!
16:21Huge connection.
16:22Gee! And both collapsed!
16:31What a wild match.
16:36Well, regardless of where you are in the generational landscape of New Japan fans,
16:42you have got to respect, admire, just be in awe of the toughness of Shingo Takagi and Tomohiro Ishii here
16:52in this main event.
16:59All right, let's go, let's go!
17:07Both men almost simultaneously getting back to their feet.
17:11Both men almost simultaneously getting back to their feet.
17:12Yep.
17:13She comes forward and connects!
17:16Okay, okay!
17:19Whoa, whoa!
17:21Whoa!
17:23Et maintenant Ishii va aller le topside.
17:33Oh boy, oh boy.
17:34Oh my God, what a superplex.
17:38Le leg est hété, centre de la rig et Shingo kicks out.
17:42Well, il n'y a pas de se faire à Ishii.
17:45Il n'y a pas de se faire à la superplex.
17:47Quick.
18:01All right, so now Ishii, powerbomb, Shingo widening the base.
18:12And Shingo backdrops Ishii over.
18:20She's on his feet though.
18:22Shingo comes forward and Ishii keeps him away.
18:25Swim.
18:26Oh.
18:28Here we go, made in Japan.
18:29Made in Japan, Rocky.
18:33Can he get him?
18:36Oh, double knees and zapped.
18:37Oh, switched it.
18:41Couldn't get made in Japan, so he switched it to that double knees and that was brutal.
18:54And just like that, 15 minutes have gone by in this main event.
18:5715 down, 15 to go.
18:59Made in Japan, no.
19:00Standing switch.
19:04Get it, DDT.
19:07Boy, Ishii tried to block it, but instead, all of his weight, when his arm gave way, all of
19:13his weight completely landed on his head.
19:17Yeah, that worked out worse.
19:19Yes.
19:27Now, made in Japan, wow, cover to a, no, kicked out.
19:41Cover.
19:52And she staggered on his feet.
19:55Puff Big Bomber.
19:56Ooh.
19:57Laces him.
19:58Center of the ring.
19:59Two.
20:00No, he kicked out.
20:02Wow.
20:03That would be one.
20:04If I was there, I'd be checking with Uno and he would let me know it was two and only
20:08two.
20:14How much more punishment does he need to take though, Kevin?
20:23So stubborn.
20:32Gotta be looking.
20:33Puff Big Bomber or Last of the Dragon.
20:36Which direction does he go?
20:37Yeah.
20:39Here we go.
20:40Last of the Dragon.
20:44Not a lot left on those.
20:52Desperation clubbing from Ishii, but not much on him.
21:00I think the end is near, Kevin.
21:01Yeah.
21:03Again, Shingo has been able to overpower in a second.
21:09Ishii.
21:09Desperate to get that boot up.
21:11Here he comes.
21:12Puff Big.
21:13Swing, no, swing and a miss.
21:14Ooh.
21:22And Shingo's on his feet first, but gets caught again.
21:30Just when Tomohiro Ishii is down, he is not out, Kevin.
21:37And that resilient heart, that stubbornness, is one of the greatest keys to the success of Tomohiro Ishii's career.
21:49You can almost see Ishii's right hand swelling.
21:54That's gotta be partially because of any nerve issue he's got, but also that incredibly tight rack.
22:02And the elbows, and the forearms, and the chops, and the forearms, and the chops.
22:13They missed with that one.
22:15Was off target.
22:18Gosh, didn't miss, and neither did Ishii.
22:20Ishii said no mas on that one.
22:23Yeah.
22:24Delivered a huge elbow.
22:29So here I was, writing off Ishii, and now all of a sudden, Shingo's the one in trouble.
22:39The big powerbomb, the stack two, and Shingo is able to extricate himself before Ishii gets the three.
22:56Tightening up that wrap, Kevin.
22:58Did you see that?
22:59Yep.
23:06Trash-talking both guys, why not?
23:08Oh, that lariat was there.
23:12One, two, and another kickout.
23:17One, two, and another kickout.
23:19One, two, and another kickout.
23:26Can Ishii hit a vertical drop, brain buster?
23:29This is the time.
23:31Vertical drop, no, denied again.
23:33Yet to hit one in this tournament.
23:41Oh, can you get him?
23:42Oh, no.
23:43No, second effort, couldn't do it.
23:45Instead, pop-up Death Valley driver.
23:49Wait a second, Ishii's on his feet, but just barely at the 20-minute mark.
23:55Dragon suplex.
23:57Shingo rolls up to his feet.
24:00Lariat puts him down.
24:02Oh, one count, why not?
24:14Neither man willing to give in, neither man willing to succumb to the other.
24:20Tomohiro Ishii and Shingo Takagi banging each other here in our main event.
24:27It's like looking in a mirror for these two.
24:29It really is.
24:31Sliding Lariat.
24:32It's there for Ishii.
24:34Red Shoes 2.
24:35And another kickout.
24:47Here we go.
24:48Vertical drop, brain buster time.
24:54If he gets this.
24:56Set.
24:56Oh.
24:57Headbutt.
24:59Misses the enziguri.
25:01Ooh.
25:03Right to the back of the head.
25:05What a shot from Shingo Takagi.
25:16Ishii.
25:16And Ishii, with it being a blindside attack, no way to kind of cinch up before absorbing
25:23it.
25:29Ishii!
25:40Oh, rough, rough.
25:43Ooh.
25:44Oh, man.
25:58Skull meets skull.
26:09Oh.
26:10So many elbows.
26:12You just awoken the beast.
27:18Shingo asking the question to himself that we're all asking,
27:21what the hell does he gotta do to beat Ishii?
27:30Oh, short DDT.
27:34Nasty.
27:51Can he get him up the last of the dragon?
27:54Not for long.
28:00Even at this late stage, with all the punishment he's taken,
28:03Shingo Takagi incredible snap.
28:07He is throwing.
28:15And now Ishii, can't avoid this?
28:18Yes, he can.
28:19Wait a second, reposition.
28:21Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
28:25Oh, it's dead.
28:28Ishii swings his legs around and DDTs Ishii.
28:32Or rather, Shingo.
28:33There can't be too much time left, right?
28:36No, unbelievable.
28:38What's the time?
28:47Abe's checking his watch.
28:50Checking the time.
28:54Twenty-five minutes gone.
29:05My God.
29:10There's the Inzaguri.
29:13Shingo's out.
29:15Shingo's gotta be out, Kevin.
29:23Whatever's left in that right arm is going to get used here.
29:26Bang.
29:27Down goes Shingo.
29:30Stack him up.
29:31Two.
29:32And another kick out.
29:42But the vertical drop.
29:44Brain buster.
29:45Got him.
29:50Ishii hits the first vertical drop brain buster of the tournament
29:54and gets his first win of this year's G1 Climax.
29:58C'est parti !
30:28C'est parti !
31:03Oh, they ain't done yet.
31:05They're not done yet.
31:06And like we saw the other night with Ishii after Ibushi got the victory, Shingo perhaps
31:13happened to be told that the match is over.
31:24They got to be exhausted.
31:30Desperado had quite a war with Ishii during the New Japan Cup and battled Shingo for the
31:36never open weight title.
31:40But yeah, Rocky, this is one of those matches, now they met at the end of the tournament
31:44last year, each only had one more match.
31:49Oh, they're not done, they're not done.
31:55But you have to wonder how this will affect both men and how they are able to compete going
32:04forward.
32:11One of the longest matches of this year's tournament, but Ishii gets the win.
32:22Yeah, each man, Kevin, may not be the same.
32:25Nope.
32:26After this.
32:28And while traditionally the winner of the main event gets the last word, Ishii, on a normal
32:34day, Brock, a man of few words, but we will not hear from the Stone Pitbull and after everything
32:48that he went through to gain victory, that's quite all right with me.
32:52Man, what a war.
32:54Battle.
32:56Loved it.
32:58So we wind up this night where we started with two athletes at the top at six, Switchblade, Jay
33:06White, and Taichi.
33:07When all is said and done, Rocky, we got a log jam.
33:11We got five athletes at six points.
33:16That's something else.
33:17Jay White, Taichi, Will Ospreay, Kota Ibushi, and Minoru Suzuki.
33:24Everybody in that group, three and one, four matches in.
33:29Pick a winner.
33:30Come on.
33:30Who's going to win the block?
33:31Come on.
33:31Come on.
33:31Come on.
33:33Anybody.
33:34It'd be silly to even try to predict at this moment.
33:37You know, going into it, I could definitely think that Jay White was possibly going to
33:42take the block, but there's a lot of people in there that could possibly take him now.
33:47Things have completely changed.
33:49And that's the beauty of this tournament, man.
33:51I love it.
33:52Absolutely.
33:52You start looking at tiebreakers as well.
33:55You know, again, Jay White has tiebreakers over the, in that group at six, Kota Ibushi,
34:03and also on Kazuchika Okada, who sits alone at four.
34:06But now Ospreay has the tiebreaker on Jay White as they're tied.
34:10We will see.
34:12And the victory by Taichi over Minoru Suzuki gives him the edge.
34:17So when you see the standings, it'll be layered into who has the tiebreaker over whom.
34:23And I have a feeling that Ospreay could have his name at the top of the list.
34:28So on Monday, we will see Kota Ibushi versus Will Ospreay in our main event.
34:35And it'll be a much different main event than we saw here tonight.
34:39Oh, yeah.
34:40With two completely different athletes.
34:44But another one that I can't wait to see on Monday is Ishii versus Taichi.
34:49This is where it's that matches with Ishii that that's where they say,
34:52Oh, wait a minute.
34:53We are going to hear from Ishii.
35:18Well, directed to the point, Ishii makes his thoughts known.
35:23Do you think there's respect between those two, between Shingo and Ishii?
35:28Yeah.
35:29There's a weird respect there, for sure.
35:32They're both two really old school style Japanese professional wrestlers.
35:36Definitely some kind of weird respect, but neither one wants to give in.
35:41Yet again, the stubbornness is stopping them.
35:44That's so funny.
35:46I'll tell you what.
35:47Monday has four matches that I'm captivated by.
35:52Ibushi and Ospreay, Ishii and Taichi, Okada and Minoru Suzuki, Jeff Cobb and Jay White.
36:01That's all on Monday.
36:02I dig it.
36:03With Shingo and Yujiro as the opener.
36:07Tomorrow, again, the tournament continues.
36:11And where again?
36:13You told me last night.
36:14Where is Sonata?
36:15Where's his hometown?
36:17Aomori, I believe, right?
36:18Yeah.
36:20Well, ironic that that's where they're going to be tomorrow.
36:23Interesting.
36:23And the so far winless Sonata, who a lot of people have started to wonder about.
36:30Boy, oh boy, wouldn't you know, he gets to face Tetsuya Naito, his LIJ mate and the double
36:36champion in the main event coming up tomorrow.
36:40I mean, if you look at what Naito's done so far in this tournament, can you pick against
36:44him?
36:44How much of an advantage do you give Sonata in his hometown?
36:49I mean, I'll say it again.
