In an exclusive interaction with India Today, former Indian cricket captain and cricket analyst Sunil Gavaskar analysed India's historic 400-plus run chase against the West Indies in Guwahati. Hailing the batting performances across both teams, Gavaskar highlighted the brilliance of Shubman Gill, observing, "The world, I think, is, is his oyster." He praised Gill's poise, awareness of field placings, and situational assessment, noting his capability to break top batting records. Addressing concerns regarding bowling figures on a flat deck, Gavaskar remarked, "You, you can't blame the pitch. It's just the, uh, the quality of the batting that was just, just simply too good." He expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma's aggressive approach ahead of the ODI World Cup, commended the domestic red-ball preparation of spinners like Kuldeep Yadav, and urged patience for debutant bowler Akib Naved under challenging limited-overs conditions.

00:00Joining us live on the broadcast is our cricket analyst in Mr. Sunil Gavaskar.
00:06Sanima, thanks so much for joining us live on India today.
00:09First things first, 400 has been chased for the very first time by this Indian team.
00:16What did you make of this entire chase that you witnessed at the stadium?
00:24Outstanding. It's a very, very memorable performance by the Indian batters.
00:28The Indian bowlers didn't have a good time because the pitch was such a good pitch to bat.
00:33And with the West Indies scoring 400 plus ones, their batter had also batted well.
00:38Amir Jango in particular, Campbell when he opened the batting,
00:43and then Hope, the skipper, playing at Captain Jennings.
00:46And then that was followed by the Indians playing some unbelievable cricket.
00:52The batting of both the teams was out of this world.
00:55Not the best time to be a bowler on a pitch as flat as this.
00:59But still, the batters have to capitalise.
01:01And the way they capitalise, more than 800 runs being scored in a game,
01:06just tells you the quality of the batting.
01:10Right. Sanima, stay on with us.
01:12Plenty more to come with Mr. Gavaskar.
01:14Let's quickly show you some interesting stats that have really come from this game.
01:19As I said, most 200s in ODS.
01:23We'll show you that as well.
01:24Now, you've got Rohit Sharma right on the top,
01:27followed by Shubman Gill, who's at the second number spot.
01:32We will be having those graphics up on the screen very soon in terms of the most 100s.
01:36And of course, we'll continue the conversation with Mr. Sunil Gavaskar as well.
01:41Plenty coming up on the programme at the moment.
01:43Remember, I'm just going back, telling you exactly what has happened in this game.
01:48It is a record-breaking performance by the Indian team.
01:51Shubman Gill, the standout performer as the captain,
01:55getting to his second ODI double ton in the 50-over format on the top of the pile, of course,
02:03is Rohit Sharma.
02:05And why is it that this ODI is very special?
02:07Because you have a scenario where the Indian team has managed to chase 400.
02:13That is what makes this particular game very, very special.
02:18Our continuous coverage on India today, on that particular encounter, as I said,
02:22will also be getting you more with Mr. Gavaskar.
02:25Also, try to show you the highlights in terms of how this particular game panned out.
02:31As I said, there were 500s.
02:32We'll have the highlights in terms of how those 100s really came about.
02:38But it's an ODI to remember for the Indian team.
02:44Remember, India had won that game in Tiruvannanthapuram.
02:47That's where they were outstanding.
02:50On that occasion, you had Virat Kohli get 100.
02:54And then post that, you had a scenario where on this game,
02:57you've got Rohit Sharma get to 100.
03:00You also have a scenario where Shubhman Gill has reached his double 100 as well.
03:09There you have one of the records that have been notched up most centuries in an ODI.
03:16If you can see that, I'd love if you can have it full screen
03:19so people can really look at that particular record in detail.
03:22You've got India versus West Indies.
03:25This game that we've got in Guwahati.
03:28It's happened this particular year, which is the one that we were seeing just a short while ago.
03:35You've got the highest run chase that India has managed.
03:39And in terms of most double centuries as well,
03:42that's the other record that has been gotten by Shubhman Gill.
03:47He's got two double centuries.
03:50If you take a look at those one centuries, you had multiple names there that had got that one centuries.
03:56And that highest successful run chase, 405, that India has managed.
04:02Before this, 360 was the highest successful run chase in India.
04:08That came versus Australia in Jaipur.
04:10351 versus England in Pune.
04:12And then you also had versus Australia in Nagpur.
04:16Just see that gap.
04:17360 vis-à-vis 405.
04:20That's the huge difference in terms of the gap that you have.
04:25I believe we have Mr. Gavaskar back with us live on the program.
04:29Sahi Bhai, because we were talking about Shubhman Gill, you know, is now just second on that list of most
04:38double hundreds.
04:39He's also, if I'm not mistaken, the number one ranked player in ODI cricket.
04:45Clearly, he's making this ODI format his own.
04:53Well, I mean, we all know how good he is.
04:55We've been seeing him in all formats of the game.
04:58In the IPL he scores, in the T20 he scores at a brisk rate.
05:03And at the one-day internationals, he's been absolutely superb as well as in the test matches.
05:09And what you see about him is, you know, the grace that comes with it.
05:13Even when he locked the ball for a six, it seems so graceful.
05:17There doesn't seem to be a hammer to it.
05:20And that is why, that is what makes it even more enjoyable.
05:23And the thing about his batting is his assessment of the situation,
05:28his assessment and understanding of the bowler's strengths and weaknesses.
05:33His awareness of the field placing, that is absolutely outstanding,
05:38absolutely outstanding for a young batter like him.
05:42And the world, I think, is his oyster.
05:45He can go on to break just about every record there is, if he carries on in this manner.
05:53But overall, if there is one criticism, I think we still have, Mr. Gavaskar.
05:59I think the one criticism that you would have would be about the pitch.
06:05I mean, yes, India has won.
06:06Great performance.
06:07But there was nothing there for the bowlers.
06:11Well, that's the nature of the limited overs game.
06:15You know, there was something in the pitch for the bowlers, for sure.
06:19We saw that when there was one bouncer ball by Jaden Seals,
06:22after he got the wicket of Rohit Sharma, he was really charged up, coming and bowling quick.
06:27That ball went over the wicket keeper's head for four wides.
06:31So, it does tell you that if the bowlers bent their backs, there was something in it.
06:36It's just that the batting was so good, that some of the better deliveries of the bowlers were hammered for
06:42success.
06:43Over there, there's nothing that the bowler can do.
06:45You can't blame the pitch.
06:47It's just the quality of the batting that was just simply too good.
06:53OK, so, as you said that you really can't be blaming the pitches.
06:58Yes, India has won the game.
07:00But then we can't forget that you've also allowed West Indies to be scoring more than 400 runs for the
07:06very first time in ODI cricket.
07:07And this is a team that's not even officially qualified for the next 50-hour World Cup.
07:13In that sense, what do you make of Indian bowlers' effort in this game?
07:20They also struggled a bit because the West Indians batted exceptionally well.
07:26Gamble, when he started off, he was really severe on even some very, very good deliveries.
07:31He hit them for boundaries or sixes.
07:33Sometimes, you know, batters get into this situation where they try out all kinds of shots and they all come
07:38off.
07:39And that's what happened with Gamble.
07:41Amir Jango, we've heard so much about him after he scored that double century in the West Indies earlier in
07:49the year in a test match.
07:50So, we all knew that he had the ability.
07:53He got a half century in the first game and then he came in and batted even better to score
07:58this brilliant 100.
07:59So, the bowlers really, I don't think, yes, it was not a helpful pitch for the bowlers.
08:03But it wasn't a pitch where they could do nothing.
08:08It's just that, you know, the battles were hitting good deliveries, which normally would be a dot-ball for sixes.
08:14That means the battles of both teams were in a different zone altogether.
08:20Sir, are you worried then with the bowlers ahead of the ODI World Cup?
08:25I mean, we're just, what about a year away from the ODI World Cup with the kind of formal...
08:29The bunch of bowlers, are you happy with them?
08:36Not to worry, not to worry, because the pitches in South Africa will definitely be a lot more helpful for
08:44the bowlers.
08:45That's what's true.
08:46And for the quicker bowlers, we have Gumra, of course, and then who we are going to pick as his
08:51partner.
08:52That is going to be the key over the remainder of the ODIs before the team is selected.
08:57So, clearly, I think that's something that will have to be worked out.
09:00But I don't think, you know, the pitches will be as good to bat on, as flat for the bowlers
09:06in South Africa.
09:07There will be something in it for the bowlers, both quick as well as the spinners.
09:14Right, Zayma, what's Kuldeep then doing right?
09:18What does this good form for Kuldeep Yadav mean for...
09:21Because, you know, he had a very good game last time around, here too.
09:24Now, the second fastest to 200 wickets in ODI cricket.
09:27What does his good form mean for India's bowling ahead of that World Cup?
09:33It does mean a lot, because you want some variety.
09:37And a bowler, wrist spinner, left-hand wrist spinner, or even a right-hand wrist spinner,
09:42who can bowl well, who will certainly make a difference.
09:45And I think here we've got to compliment the BCCI for allowing, you know, him,
09:50Mamad Chami, Manav Sutar, all of them to go and play in country cricket.
09:55Right. And, you know, because the bowling rhythm is so important.
09:59And all these bowlers have shown great rhythm because of the fact that they played in South Africa.
10:08I'll go back to the batting, Sunny, by, you know, something that I wanted to talk about right at the
10:13top.
10:13Rohit Sharma, you know, gets that 100.
10:16There were a bit of murmurs about the chances of him playing that 2027 World Cup.
10:21What does this 100 do to those chances?
10:27It does absolutely no harm at all.
10:30Because, in fact, the questions have been asked by people who really shouldn't be asking such questions.
10:36He scored 100 in England at Lords as well.
10:39So we all know, look, the way he's been batting, we all know from the 2023 World Cup,
10:44totally unselfish cricketer.
10:45He wants to get the Indian team off to a flying start.
10:48And therefore, he will take chances, try and capitalize on the field restriction in the first 10 overs.
10:54And in that, he will get out.
10:55But he gets the team off to a flying start.
10:58And then if he can carry on like we've seen him at Lords in England and over here,
11:03then he will get a big 100 and a big partnership.
11:06And which will mean that India can chase any total or can total more than 350 every time.
11:13Since we were talking about India's bowling, I'll take you back to that.
11:17A lot of chatter I see on social media and otherwise.
11:21People saying, looking at Mohamed Siraj sitting on the bench saying,
11:24why don't you draft him in?
11:26He's an experienced bowler.
11:28Why do you think he's not making the 11?
11:33No, I think there must be some thinking that they might be wanting to give him a bit of a
11:36breather.
11:37They might come in for the last game.
11:39That is a possibility.
11:41So we'll just have to wait.
11:43Sometimes we don't know what the tactics are.
11:44Like, you know, I think maybe at the media conference, maybe that is the question should be asked.
11:50But is he being saved because of workload, which is such a common word now?
11:55Or is he being saved so that he can come in for a crucial final game?
12:03And finally, Sanibai, before we let you go, you had Aakib Navi make his debut.
12:10265th cricketer to debut for India in the ODI format.
12:13Didn't have an ideal game.
12:15But on a pitch like this, how would you judge him?
12:20Well, I think, again, not an easy pitch to bowl on for him.
12:24And therefore, was a little bit expensive.
12:27And, you know, when you're bowling in the first 10 overs, even if you have the new ball,
12:31because of the two fielders outside the 30-meter circle makes it tough for even the best of bowling.
12:37So you just have to have a little more patience with it.
12:42Okay, Sanibai, thank you so much for taking our time speaking to us here on India today.
12:47Remember, what a stunning win we have just witnessed in Guwahati.
12:51A win that will go down in the history books because of the number of records that were broken.
