00:01Hey guys, fresh meat?
00:04Scholarship kid?
00:05Full ride.
00:06Problem? Depends.
00:07Can you keep up or are you just here for the free tuition?
00:10I'm here to play, not to kiss anyone's ass.
00:12Oh, number 10 has a bad temper.
00:1510 is earned, not assigned.
00:16You think you deserve it? I'll let the field decide.
00:20Good, because I don't carry dead weight.
00:23Cross never goes easy on newbies.
00:25This one won't last a week.
00:27Let them talk. I've heard worse at every tryout since I was 12.
00:32Listen up!
00:33We've got regional qualifiers in six weeks.
00:36Anyone who slacks off is benched.
00:39Clear?
00:39Yes, coach!
00:41Ravis, you're on red team.
00:42Cross, you're blue captain.
00:52Try me.
00:59Lucky shot.
01:00Did you see that nutmeg? Damn!
01:08He's different.
01:09Not like the others who bow to my last name.
01:11He looks at me like I'm just another player on the field.
01:15Cross is solid. Textbook midfielder.
01:17Yeah, but no surprise factor.
01:18Let's see what else they got.
01:22Mark him!
01:26Number 10, who is that?
01:28Mateo Rivas.
01:29Full scholarship, no academy background.
01:32Street tricks won't work in real games.
01:34He's fast.
01:36Where did you learn that move?
01:37Parking lots, alleys, places you wouldn't play.
01:39You think street ball makes you better than academy training?
01:42Don't get cocky.
01:44One good play doesn't make you a starter.
01:45Then I'll just keep scoring.
01:48Worried about your spot, captain?
01:50Shut up.
01:51Just saying.
01:52Scholarship boy's got eyes on him now.
01:54He plays like he's got nothing to lose.
01:56Because he doesn't.
01:57And that's what makes him dangerous.
02:02Hey Rivas.
02:04Heard your dad runs a garage.
02:06That true?
02:06Rivas Auto Repair.
02:08Been in business for 20 years.
02:10So you grew up smelling oil and grease?
02:12No wonder you play dirty.
02:14Say that again.
02:17What, you ashamed?
02:19Mechanic's son playing with trust fund kids?
02:23Enough!
02:24Oh, captain defending the charity cake?
02:26How sweet.
02:27One more word and you're off the roster.
02:29You can't do that.
02:30Try me.
02:31Whatever.
02:32This team's going soft.
02:33I don't need you to fight my battles.
02:35You think I did that for you?
02:38Then why?
02:39Because he's an asshole.
02:40And because this team doesn't need internal fights.
02:44I can handle him.
02:45I know you can.
02:47But you hit him, you lose your scholarship.
02:49Is that what you want?
02:50Look, I don't, I'm not trying to control you.
02:53Next time, stay out of it.
02:55Did you see Cross's face?
02:56He looked ready to kill Jake.
02:58Yeah, but why?
02:59Since when does he care about scholarship kits?
03:04Cross, Mersil, come in first.
03:07Boys, I know things got heated in the showers.
03:10But you two come from good families.
03:12I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding.
03:14Absolutely, sir.
03:15Ries just overreacted.
03:21Rivas, you almost assaulted a teammate.
03:23That's a serious violation.
03:24He insulted my family.
03:26I never threw a punch.
03:27Sign this warning.
03:28One more incident and your scholarship is under review.
03:32So they get a talk and I get a warning.
03:36Sign it or don't play Saturday.
03:42See?
03:43Charity face always cause trouble.
03:45Shut up, Jake.
03:48He didn't do anything wrong.
03:51And I just stood there.
03:52Behind a door.
03:54Like a coward.
03:57You're putting Ries' scholarship under review.
03:59Reverse it.
04:00Cross, this doesn't concern you.
04:01It concerns the team.
04:02He's our best striker.
04:04You bench him.
04:05We lose Saturday.
04:06The incident report-
04:07Was written by Jake Mercer.
04:09Who started it?
04:10Ask anyone in that shower room.
04:12Even if that's true, the paperwork's done.
04:14Then undo it.
04:15Or I sit out Saturday too.
04:17Let's see how the booster's like a team.
04:20With no captain and no striker.
04:21You're threatening me?
04:23With your own injury?
04:24I'm negotiating.
04:26Withdraw the review.
04:27Give Resurrectus a record.
04:28That's all.
04:28Fine.
04:29But you both cleaned the stadium after practice.
04:31For a week.
04:32That's the compromise.
04:33Deal.
04:37I didn't ask you to talk to the Dean.
04:40I didn't do it for you.
04:42I did it for the team.
04:43Then why are you here cleaning too?
04:45You're the captain.
04:46You could have made me do it alone.
04:47Shut up and clean Rivellis.
04:48Maybe he's not as much of an asshole as I thought.
04:55Your name's on half these trophies.
04:57Cross name.
04:58Not mine.
04:59What's the difference?
05:00The difference is nobody knows if I earned any of it.
05:03Or if my father just wrote a check.
05:06I know.
05:08Know what?
05:09That nutmeg in practice.
05:10You didn't let me score.
05:12You genuinely couldn't stop me.
05:14There's no check for that.
05:15And you actually cleaned this place.
05:17A rich kid faking it would have hired someone.
05:20Back in that office.
05:21Why did you help me?
05:23Don't say it was for the team.
05:26Finish the last case.
05:27I'm done.
05:28You're avoiding the question!
05:30Lock up when you're done.
05:35He's blushing.
05:37The great Evan Cross blushing.
05:39Now that's worth more than any trophy in this room.
05:45Yeah, Dad.
05:46Everything's great.
05:46Made the starting lineup this week.
05:50That's my boy.
05:51The garage is doing fine.
05:53Don't you worry about the bills.
05:56I'm not worried, Dad.
05:58The scholarship covers everything.
06:00I don't need a dime.
06:02You eating enough?
06:03You sound tired, son.
06:06Just practice.
06:07Coach is working us hard.
06:09I gotta go.
06:09Early training tomorrow.
06:10Love you, Dad.
06:16Come on.
06:17Just hold together.
06:18Just a few more weeks.
06:20He's stitching a shoe at midnight and telling his father he needs nothing.
06:26And I've never had to stitch a single thing in my life.
06:35Who was that?
06:40Cool off in there, mechanic.
06:42Maybe you'll learn some respect.
06:43Jake!
06:44Open the door!
06:45This isn't funny!
06:50Rivas?
06:51Where are you?
06:52In here!
06:53Someone locked the door!
06:59Key.
07:00Now.
07:02Relax.
07:03It's just a joke.
07:05You locked a teammate in a closet and threw his shoes in water?
07:08Give me the key.
07:09Or I break the lock and your nose.
07:12Fine.
07:13Psycho.
07:18You okay?
07:24I don't need you to save me!
07:26Stop it!
07:26Just stop saving me!
07:29Mateo, I...
07:30Every time.
07:32Every single time you swoop in like some hero.
07:34I'm not your project, Evan.
07:36I never asked to be saved.
07:38I know you didn't ask.
07:39I just couldn't stand there and watch.
07:54Rivas!
07:55You were supposed to be in the box!
07:56Where were you?
07:58I was open on the left!
07:59You didn't even look up!
08:03I'm the captain.
08:05You run where I tell you to run.
08:07Then learn to pass, captain.
08:10Enough!
08:10Both of you!
08:11Save it for Saturday.
08:15Ninety seconds left.
08:17Ashford needs a goal to advance.
08:19Cross has the ball at midfield.
08:29Goal!
08:30Rivas scores!
08:31Two to one!
08:32And it was Cross with the assist!
08:35What a connection between these two!
08:44You looked up.
08:46You were open.
08:48He passed to me.
08:50After the fight.
08:51After everything.
08:52He still passed to me.
08:57Yeah, coach put me in the starting eleven for the semi-finals.
09:01Big news, right?
09:04Starting striker.
09:06And no place to sleep.
09:08Perfect timing.
09:13I just need a little more time.
09:16Just a few more weeks.
09:22This is Evan Cross.
09:24I need to set up a transfer from my personal trust fund.
09:27Yes, I have full authority over it.
09:29Of course, Mr. Cross.
09:30The recipient's name?
09:31It goes to Rivas Auto Repair.
09:34And it stays anonymous.
09:35Not a word to anyone.
09:37Especially not to Mateo Rivas.
09:40Understood.
09:41The amount.
09:42Whatever it takes to pay off their mortgage.
09:44All of it.
09:45Every last cent.
09:53I got a call from the bank today.
09:55Someone made a large anonymous transfer to a garage.
09:59Rivas Auto Repair.
10:00And the transfer came from a Cross Trust account.
10:03Your account, Evan.
10:06Evan.
10:08It's my money.
10:09I can do what I want with it.
10:10That money is the family's future.
10:13Not charity for some mechanic's son who happens to kick a ball.
10:19His name is Mateo.
10:20And he's the best striker this school has ever seen.
10:23He's a distraction.
10:24Cut it off.
10:25Today.
10:26Or I'll freeze your access to the trust.
10:28Then freeze it.
10:30I'd rather have nothing than be you.
10:31Sit down!
10:34I'm done eating.
10:36Yes, I'm authorizing another anonymous transfer.
10:38Pay off whatever's left on his mortgage.
10:40All of it.
10:41Mr. Cross.
10:42Your father has requested oversight on all trust activity.
10:45The trust is in my name until I turn 25.
10:47He can request all he wants.
10:49Execute the transfer.
10:52He thinks money is power.
10:56But the only powerful thing I've ever done is give it away.
10:59To someone who'll never know it was me.
11:10This guarantee letter.
11:12Anonymous.
11:13From a cross trust fund.
11:15You think I'm stupid?
11:19I don't know what you're talking about.
11:21Don't lie to me.
11:24My father's mortgage got paid off overnight.
11:27My scholarship suddenly has a guarantee.
11:30Who else has a cross trust fund, Evan?
11:31Let go.
11:32We're in the middle of the field.
11:34I don't want your money.
11:36I don't want to be your charity project.
11:38It's not charity.
11:40Then what is it?
11:43What's going on here?
11:44Cross.
11:45Rivas.
11:46Nothing, coach.
11:50You two can't stop clashing.
11:51Fine.
11:53From now on, you're my starting front two.
11:55Riaz at ten.
11:56Cross pushing up.
11:57You'll live and die on the same line.
12:00Coach, that's an order.
12:02Learn to work together or lose together.
12:03Your choice.
12:09Scoreless in the 85th minute.
12:11Ashford's new front duo, Cross and Riaz, haven't clicked yet today.
12:23You okay?
12:25I've had worse.
12:26You?
12:28Fine.
12:29Let's end this.
12:31Far post.
12:32Trust me.
12:34I always do.
12:40Goal!
12:41Cross with the header!
12:43Rivius with the assist.
12:45One to nil in the 88th minute.
12:46This duo just came alive when it mattered most.
12:52You're back.
12:53That tackle.
12:55It's nothing.
12:57That's not nothing.
12:59You should get that iced.
13:01Since when do you care?
13:05I don't.
13:06Just don't want our striker breaking down before semi-finals.
13:09Right.
13:10The team.
13:18Coach told me to do this.
13:19Don't read into it.
13:21Wouldn't dream of it.
13:23Does it hurt?
13:27Only when you press like you're trying to kill me.
13:30Big captain can't handle a little pressure?
13:34Depends who's applying it.
13:36Don't say weird things.
13:38You asked why I paid off the mortgage.
13:41I did.
13:42I saw you stitching a shoe at midnight.
13:43Telling your dad you needed nothing.
13:45I couldn't unsee it.
13:46That was you.
13:47In the hallway.
13:48The footsteps.
13:49I hate owing people.
13:51It makes me feel small.
13:52You don't owe me anything.
13:53I didn't do it to make you small.
13:57I did it because watching you struggle made me feel useless.
14:01Turn over.
14:02I'll wrap your back.
14:04Sure.
14:05Just for the game.
14:06Just for the game.
14:14Where you going?
14:17Work?
14:18Night shift at the diner?
14:19I'll give you a ride.
14:20No thanks.
14:21Your car costs more than my dad's whole garage.
14:26Then I'll take this.
14:28What? There's only room for-
14:30Cross! Get off! This isn't built for two people!
14:33Then drive carefully.
14:35You're insane.
14:36You have a Ferrari right there.
14:38The Ferrari's boring.
14:40This is more fun.
14:45Is that Evan Cross on a shared scooter?
14:47With the scholarship striker?
14:49No way!
14:49The Cross Air?
14:51Post it! Post it!
14:52People are staring.
14:52Get off, Evan!
14:53Let them stare.
14:54Eyes on the road, Rivas.
14:58Do you work every night?
14:59Most nights.
15:00Diner till midnight.
15:01Then homework.
15:02When do you sleep?
15:04Sleep's overrated.
15:06That's why you looked exhausted in practice.
15:09It's not the training.
15:10I manage.
15:16You can let go now.
15:18The road's bumpy.
15:19It's not that bumpy.
15:22Quit the diner.
15:24I need the money.
15:25Your dad's mortgage is paid.
15:26You don't need the night shifts anymore.
15:29Sleep.
15:30Mateo.
15:31I don't know how to stop.
15:32I've been running since I was a kid.
15:34If I stop, I don't know who I am.
15:39Then run next to me.
15:41Same line, remember?
15:44This burger's cold.
15:46You people can't do anything right.
15:49I'm sorry, sir.
15:50Let me make you a fresh one.
15:51Forget it.
15:52I want a refund and a free meal.
15:54Or I'll report this stump.
16:00You have to remake it.
16:01That's more than fair.
16:03Who are you?
16:04Mind your own business.
16:07I'm a paying customer who just recorded you threatening a worker over a free meal.
16:11Want me to post this?
16:12Whatever.
16:13Keep your cold burger.
16:17I had it handled.
16:18I know.
16:19I just wanted the popcorn seat.
16:23On the house for the popcorn seat.
16:30Hey, Dad.
16:31Yeah.
16:32Everything's great here.
16:33School, soccer, all good.
16:35Son, the strangest thing happened.
16:38Someone paid off the whole mortgage.
16:40The bank won't say who.
16:41That's amazing, Dad.
16:43Must be an angel.
16:44Whoever it was, tell them thank you.
16:46We can finally breathe.
16:47I will, Dad.
16:49I'll tell them.
16:50Love you.
16:53He knows it was me.
16:55He just told his father I'm an angel.
16:59And he still won't say a word to my face.
17:03You can go now.
17:05This is my stop.
17:08So this is the famous garage.
17:13Mateo.
17:14You brought a friend.
17:15Come in.
17:16Come in.
17:17Dad, he's just dropping me off.
17:19Evan Cross, sir.
17:20Mateo's teammate.
17:23Cross, you're the captain, right?
17:25The one my boy complains about every phone call?
17:27All good things, I hope.
17:29Since you're here, give me a hand with those tires.
17:32Mateo's too skinny to lift them alone.
17:34Dad, he's not...
17:37On it.
17:42He works hard.
17:43Not what I expected from a rich kid.
17:47Yeah.
17:48He's full of surprises.
17:55So you're the annoying captain my son complains about.
17:58You don't seem so bad, kid.
17:59You're welcome here anytime.
18:01I might take you up on that.
18:04Don't encourage him, Dad.
18:07My dad likes him.
18:08My dad, who trusts no one, likes him.
18:12And the way Evan smiled just now, I'm in trouble.
18:16Deep trouble.
18:19National U-23 preliminary list.
18:21Cross is on it, of course.
18:23Wait.
18:24Rivas is on the reserve list?
18:26The scholarship kid made it?
18:28Reserve list.
18:29So the mechanic's boy wants to climb over the captain now?
18:33What's the matter, Cross?
18:34Your little charity project might outshine you.
18:44Hey.
18:45About the list.
18:47Congratulations.
18:48Reserve list is a big deal for a first year.
18:51You're not upset?
18:53That I'm on it?
18:55Why would I be upset?
18:56I told you.
18:57Hunger beats privilege.
18:59You earned it.
19:02You remember that?
19:03I said it months ago.
19:05I remember everything you say.
19:07That's the problem.
19:08That's the problem.
19:09What does that even mean?
19:11Why does he keep saying things that make it impossible to hate him?
19:17Cross.
19:18Rivas ignored your call again.
19:19He's playing for himself, trying to impress the national scouts.
19:22I made the run you didn't see, Jake.
19:24Don't put words in my mouth.
19:25He's got a point, Rivas.
19:26You've been forcing shots all week.
19:29So you believe him over me?
19:30After everything?
19:32I'm saying stay disciplined.
19:34As your captain?
19:35Right.
19:36The captain.
19:37Always the captain.
19:40Stop!
19:41Both of you!
19:41One more out first and you're both off the semi-el roster.
19:44I don't care who started it!
19:45Hit the showers.
19:46Cool off.
19:47Now.
19:54I shouldn't have taken Jake's side.
19:55I know he's poison.
19:57Then why did you?
19:59Because when you talked about impressing the national scouts, I got scared you'd leave.
20:04Play for yourself.
20:05Move on.
20:06And I said something stupid.
20:08You got scared I'd leave?
20:10He got scared I'd leave.
20:11Not the striker.
20:12Not the teammate.
20:13Me.
20:14And standing here.
20:15In this hallway.
20:17I realize I don't want to leave either.
20:24Mateo!
20:25Great game today.
20:26I'm writing a feature on you.
20:28The scholarship striker who made the national list.
20:30Oh.
20:31Uh.
20:31Thanks.
20:32Sure.
20:32Happy to help.
20:33Great.
20:33How about we go over the interview questions over ice cream?
20:36There's a great place two blocks away.
20:38Ice cream sounds good.
20:40Let me grab my jacket.
20:46Rivas.
20:47We have recovery training tomorrow.
20:48You shouldn't be out late.
20:49It's just ice cream cross.
20:51For an interview.
20:52It won't take long, Evan.
20:53Just team feature stuff.
20:55Fine.
20:56Whatever.
20:57But you know five.
21:03What's his problem?
21:07So, who's been your biggest support this season?
21:12Honestly, the most annoying person on the team.
21:15He drives me crazy, but he...
21:19Found you two.
21:20Evan?
21:21You followed me here?
21:23Mind if I join the interview?
21:25I'm the captain.
21:26I have...
21:26insights.
21:29You know what?
21:30I think I have enough for now.
21:31I'll email you the rest, Mateo.
21:34You drove all the way here for an interview?
21:36I like this flavor.
21:45You didn't tell me you were meeting that reporter again today?
21:48Why would I?
21:50Since when do I report my schedule to you?
21:53You're on the National Reserve list now.
21:55People will use you.
21:56That reporter?
21:58Sarah's just doing her job.
21:59Not everyone has an agenda, Evan.
22:02You don't know that.
22:04Let me vet who you...
22:07Vet?
22:08Vet?
22:09You don't get to vet my life?
22:10Who do you think you are?
22:14I'm...
22:14I'm your...
22:15My what?
22:17Say it.
22:17What are you to me, Evan?
22:19Because you sure act like you own me!
22:26That's what I thought.
22:27You're not my boyfriend, Evan.
22:29You don't get a say.
22:33Boyfriend.
22:38He said boyfriend.
22:40He's the one who said the word.
22:41Not me.
22:43So why is that the only word I can hear right now?
22:47Boyfriend.
22:48Yeah.
22:49I'd like that.
22:56Stop.
22:57You'll catch a cold.
22:58I'm already soaked.
22:59The umbrella's pointless now.
23:02Then let me drive you.
23:04My car's right there.
23:06Why do you keep doing this?
23:08Following me.
23:09Protecting me.
23:11Showing up everywhere.
23:12After what I said, you're not my boyfriend.
23:14Is this guilt?
23:16Because you paid off the mortgage?
23:17You feel responsible for me?
23:18Because I don't need a guardian, Evan.
23:21That's not why I'm here.
23:24Then why?
23:26Give me one real reason.
23:27Because I can't stand the thought of you walking home alone in the rain.
23:32Because when you're not around, I look for you.
23:35Because...
23:38Because what?
23:40It's because I don't know how to say the rest without ruining everything.
23:43Then don't say it.
23:45Just drive me home.
23:48Okay.
23:56This is ridiculous.
23:58I'm Evan Cross.
23:58I don't lose sleep over anyone.
24:03How to know if you're catching feelings for a teammate.
24:10Signs you're falling for someone.
24:11You look for them in every room.
24:13You remember everything they say.
24:15You get jealous when others get close.
24:25Is it normal for two guys to feel like this?
24:33Okay, okay, so maybe I...
24:35Damn it.
24:43I like him.
24:44I like Mateo Rivas.
24:46The most stubborn, prideful, impossible person I've ever met.
24:50Great. Just great.
24:56How to tell someone you love them without scaring them away.
25:05I've never been scared of anything.
25:08Not the field, not my father, not failure.
25:12But the thought of him walking away...
25:15That terrifies me.
25:24This whole table's empty. Why do I have to sit across from you?
25:28Captain's privilege.
25:29Sit.
25:31You're not eating enough protein.
25:33Trade me your salad for my chicken.
25:36Since when are you my nutritionist?
25:40Don't touch his gear.
25:43It's just shin guards, psycho.
25:55You didn't have to do that.
25:57He touches your stuff. I don't like it. Simple.
26:06Why did you lock the door?
26:10You've been avoiding me.
26:11Since the rain.
26:12Since the umbrella.
26:14Why?
26:15I'm not avoiding you.
26:21You take a different route to practice.
26:22You leave the cafeteria when I sit down.
26:25You won't look me in the eye.
26:26So look at me now, Mateo.
26:28Why have you been avoiding me?
26:31Because when you're this close, I can't think straight.
26:33Is that what you want to hear?
26:35Yeah. That's exactly what I want to hear.
26:37He's so close I can count his eyelashes.
26:40And for the first time, I'm just thinking about him.
26:47Is that Adrian Wells?
26:49The Adrian Wells?
26:50He played in the MLSC's finals.
26:52He's a legend.
26:53What's he doing here?
26:55Adrian.
26:56Good to have you back at Ashford.
27:02Heard you've got some talent this year.
27:04I'm scouting for a development program.
27:09Number 10.
27:11That technique is raw but electric.
27:12Where'd you train?
27:14Mostly the streets, sir.
27:15Parking lots, alleys.
27:17Street ball.
27:18That's where the real magic comes from.
27:20You've got something special, kid.
27:29Here's my private card.
27:31Let's have dinner.
27:32I'd love to talk about your future.
27:35Dinner? With you? With you?
27:37Yeah, of course.
27:39He has training.
27:40And recovery.
27:41His schedule's full.
27:44And you are...
27:45The captain.
27:47Evan Cross.
27:49The captain.
27:51Very protective of your striker, aren't you?
27:53Dinner.
27:54His private card.
27:56That easy smile.
27:58I want to rip that card in half.
28:01And I hate that I feel this way.
28:09Exposed.
28:10Scholarship striker Matteo Rias caught sharing rides with Crossairn.
28:13Old photos surface.
28:14Is he trading favors for a starting spot?
28:18Whoa.
28:18So Rivas is sleeping his way onto the starting eleven?
28:22The comments are brutal.
28:23Everyone's piling on.
28:35Listen to this top comment.
28:38So Roravias is trading favors for a starting spot?
28:42Disgusting.
28:45Say that to my face, Jake.
28:46Or better, say it to the whole team.
28:48On record.
28:51I'm just reading what people are saying.
28:55Listen up.
28:56Anyone who believes Matteo earned his spot with anything but his feet,
28:59come say it now.
29:01To me.
29:06You shouldn't have.
29:07Now they'll say we're...
29:12Let them say whatever they want.
29:14I'm done watching you take hits alone.
29:16He just put a target on his own back to shield me.
29:20The Cross name can survive a scandal.
29:23Mine can't.
29:24And he doesn't even care.
29:37Your old ones are falling apart.
29:39Don't argue.
29:40Just wear them.
29:54Whoa.
29:56Whew.
29:56Fishing.
30:07Nice cleats, Rivas.
30:09Those are 300 bucks.
30:10I thought you were broke.
30:12A gift?
30:13I don't know from who.
30:14Hey, Cross, you know who's playing Secret Anna for the scholarship kid?
30:18No idea.
30:28Nice fit.
30:30Perfect size, actually.
30:31Almost like someone knew exactly what I wear.
30:34Lucky guess by whoever it was.
30:37Thank you, Evan.
30:38I didn't-
30:39Save it, Captain. I know your handwriting on the shoebox receipt.
30:43He knew. Of course he knew.
30:46And he said thank you.
30:48Not take it back.
30:49Not I don't need charity. Just...
30:53We're getting somewhere.
30:59You're really going.
31:00He's Adrian Wells, Evan. This could change my career.
31:02You don't know anything about him. What if he wants something?
31:05It's a career dinner. Why are you acting like this?
31:07Because I don't want you having dinner with him!
31:10Why?
31:18Career dinner, sure!
31:20Private card, sure!
31:23That smug bastard.
31:27To your future, Mateo. You've got the talent to go pro.
31:30Thank you, sir. That means a lot.
31:39Your captain's been hiding behind that plant for 20 minutes. Should we invite him over?
31:43Evan?
31:45I was just in the neighborhood.
31:48Sit down, Captain. Clearly you two have things to figure out. I'll get the check.
31:51You followed me.
31:53Again, and hid behind a plant.
31:57The plant was a good hiding spot.
31:58What?
32:11This is insane.
32:12I'm sitting outside a garage at 4 a.m.
32:15for a guy who told me he needs space.
32:23Just a few hours.
32:25When he opens up, I'll say it.
32:27Everything.
32:28No more hiding behind plants or excuses.
32:35Evan? Is that you?
32:37What in the world?
32:38Mr. Rivas.
32:39Good morning, sir.
32:41Son, how long have you been sitting out here?
32:43A while.
32:45I needed to talk to Mateo.
32:47But I didn't want to wake anyone.
32:49You drove all night and sat in the cold for my son?
32:52And you two just teammates?
32:57No, sir.
32:59He's more than that.
33:00A lot more.
33:02I just haven't found the right way to tell him.
33:05Come inside. Warm up.
33:07I'll make coffee.
33:10You're not angry?
33:19My boy's been carrying the world on his back since he was little.
33:23If someone's willing to freeze on my doorstep just to talk to him,
33:26I'd be a fool to send them away.
33:29His father just accepted me before I even said the words.
33:32Mateo grew up with this kind of love.
33:33No wonder he's so strong.
33:39Mateo! Wait!
33:44What now?
33:45You embarrassed me in front of a legend, Evan?
33:48I'm sorry. I just...
33:50I couldn't sit at home knowing you were with him.
33:54I'm not too gonna die on me.
33:56Why?
33:57Just tell me why you keep doing this!
34:01Because you like him, don't you?
34:03The famous player.
34:05The easy smile.
34:06The private card.
34:08He can give you everything I...
34:10You think I like Drian?
34:11Are you serious right now?
34:14I saw you smile at him.
34:17You never smile at me like that.
34:19That's a professional courtesy smile, you idiot!
34:22God, you're impossible!
34:23Mateo!
34:27You never smile at me like that.
34:30What is wrong with me?
34:31Why can't I just say it?
34:41Fine.
34:42If I can't say it here, I'll say it there.
34:45Where it started.
34:47I've spent my whole life being told what to want.
34:50This is the first thing I've ever chosen for myself.
34:52And I'm not letting my own cowardness ruin it.
35:03I called for the overlap!
35:06I didn't hear you.
35:20What the hell was that?
35:22You two played like strangers out there!
35:23We're down two goals!
35:27I don't care what's going on between you off the pitch.
35:31When that whistle blow, you're a unit.
35:33Now fix it! Second half, go!
35:43You want me to back off? Is that it?
35:45You want space?
35:49I want to play my own game.
35:50Without you managing every step.
35:58Fine.
35:59You want me to back off? Fine. I'll back off.
36:01On the pitch, off the pitch, everywhere.
36:03You won't even know I'm there.
36:05Good.
36:12This hearing concerns allegation that Matteo Rivas received improper financial benefits linked to his roster position.
36:24I've never accepted anything in exchange for my spot. I earned it on the field.
36:29Let me clarify something for the committee.
36:36A scholarship student receiving anonymous payments from a cross-trust fund? That's not a rumor. That's fraud. I have the
36:42transfer records right here.
36:47Anonymous payments? From a cross-trust?
36:52Mr. Rivas, did you knowingly receive these funds?
36:57I didn't know. My father's mortgage was paid by an anonymous donor.
37:03I never knew the source.
37:04Convenient. So you accepted the money and pretended not to know that's still a violation.
37:12Evan, sit down.
37:14No.
37:18Evan, don't.
37:21The anonymous transfers weren't from a cross-trust.
37:24They were from my trust. My personal account. And Matteo had no idea it was me.
37:30You... Cross? You're saying you personally?
37:32I paid off his father's mortgage. Anonymously. Without his knowledge or consent.
37:39Evan, stop talking! Right now!
37:42Why? Because the truth ruins your narrative?
37:45You wanted to frame him as a cheat.
37:49But the only person who did anything here is me.
37:52Mr. Rivas, can you confirm you had no knowledge of the source?
37:55I confirm it. I found a guarantee letter. And I confronted him.
37:59He never admitted. Not once. Until right now.
38:03If the recipient had no knowledge and requested nothing, there's no violation on his part.
38:08The allegations against Mr. Rivas are dismissed.
38:12You just stood in front of the entire athletics committee and threw away your inheritance.
38:16For a mechanic's son?
38:18His name is Matteo. And if my inheritance is the price of telling the truth, then take it.
38:22I never wanted it anyway.
38:27You just gave up everything. In front of everyone.
38:32I've been giving up pieces of myself to that name my whole life.
38:35Today I finally chose what I actually want.
38:39He chose me. Over the cross fortune. Over his father. Over everything.
38:43And instead of feeling grateful, I feel terrified.
38:46Because now I owe him something I can never repay.
38:55So it was you. All of it.
38:58The mortgage. The scholarship guarantee. Everything.
39:05Matteo.
39:06For months, I thought I was making it on my own.
39:09Every night shift. Every stitch shoe. Earning my place.
39:13You were quietly cleaning up behind me.
39:16That's not how it was. You earned everything on the field.
39:19You don't get it. My whole life, I've had one thing. My pride.
39:23Knowing that whatever I have, I earned it. And you took that.
39:27You turned me into exactly what they called me. A charity case.
39:31I did it because I care about you. Not out of pity.
39:33Care? You made every major decision of my life without asking me.
39:37My father's debt. My scholarship. Who I can have dinner with.
39:40That's not care, Evan. That's control.
39:43Control.
39:46Take it back. All of it. The shoes. The money. All of it.
39:50I'd rather play in falling down cleats that are mine than in perfect ones that make me a project.
39:56I never wanted you to feel like a project.
39:58I know. That's what makes it worse.
40:13Rias scores a solo goal.
40:15And moments later, cross with an individual effort.
40:20Both brilliant, but there's zero teamwork. It's like watching two separate teams in blue.
40:30Coach, your front two scored, but the team still lost. What's going on with Cross and Rios?
40:38We had some communication issues today. We'll address them.
40:47Sorry to crash this, but I've been watching this team for weeks.
40:51And I've made my decision.
40:53Mr. Wells, what decision? Are you signing someone?
40:56Let's just say one player on this team has a future far bigger than this college pitch.
41:01I'll announce the name tomorrow.
41:07He's going to take me to T.O.
41:09Away from this team.
41:11Away from me.
41:13And after what I did, I don't even have the right to stop him.
41:17The player I've chosen for the pro development program is Mateo Raves.
41:29But there's a condition. The offer is for Mateo as an individual talent.
41:34He'd join immediately as a solo prospect, not representing Ashford.
41:39He'd leave the college team now, before the finals.
41:44Leave now? Before the finals?
41:47The program starts next week.
41:48It's the opportunity of a lifetime, Mateo.
41:51Most players would kill for this.
41:53But you have to choose.
41:55The team or your future.
42:00This is a lot. Can I have some time to think?
42:04Take until tomorrow, but not a day longer.
42:17I'll be right back.
42:39So, I'm going to take a look at this.
42:41I'll be right back.
42:44Everything you've ever known
42:48I'll have my answer tomorrow
42:49Don't be a fool
42:50No one throws away an empire for a fling
42:54You never understood
42:56He was never a fling
42:58He's the only real thing in my entire life
43:05I heard everything
43:06Your father's wrong, you know
43:07He usually gets what he wants
43:09Not this time, go
43:12Whatever you decide about the inheritance
43:13Decide it for yourself
43:14Not to spite him, not to please him
43:16But don't sit here and let him turn you into him
43:18Thank you, Mom
43:19Now go find your boy
43:21And Evan, for what it's worth
43:23I've never seen you happier than these past few months
43:32Tomorrow he decides about Adrian
43:34Tomorrow I decide about my father
43:36But tonight, tonight I just need him to know
43:53Stay or go
43:54Team or future
43:56It should be easy
43:56It should be so easy
44:03So why can't I stop thinking about him
44:09I'm right here, Mateo
44:18Evan?
44:20What are you
44:20How long have you been out there?
44:23Long enough to hear you
44:25You said you'd back off
44:27On the pitch
44:28Off the pitch
44:29Everywhere
44:29I lied
44:31I can't
44:32I tried for exactly six days
44:34And it nearly killed me
44:35Why are you here, Evan?
44:38I have to decide about Adrian tomorrow
44:39My father gave me an ultimatum
44:41Drop you
44:42Or lose the inheritance
44:43The name, everything
44:45I'm choosing tomorrow too
44:47He threatened to disown you
44:48Over me
44:50And I already know my answer
44:51I don't care about the money
44:52I never did
44:55But I came here tonight to say something else
44:57Something I should have said a long time ago
45:00Say it
45:02I don't need you to forgive me for the money
45:04Or the control or any of it
45:06I'll spend it
45:07I'll spend as long as it takes earning that back
45:11But I need you to come back
45:12The team's falling apart without you
45:14And I'm falling apart without you
45:18Don't leave with Adrian
45:20Don't leave me
45:21You gave up your entire inheritance
45:24And now you're standing in my father's garage
45:26Soaking wet
45:27Asking me to stay
45:29Do you even hear yourself?
45:31I hear myself perfectly
45:33For the first time in my life
45:35I know exactly what I want
45:38And it's not an empire
45:41It's you
45:46You came early
45:48So did you
45:49I figured
45:51We should start over
45:52From the basics
45:53The basics?
45:55We're not rookies
45:56One touch passing
45:58No fancy plays
45:59Just you and me
46:00Back and forth
46:01Until it feels right again
46:02You didn't answer Adrian yet
46:04You didn't either
46:06I'd rather not talk about tomorrow
46:07Just play with me today
46:12About the garage
46:13What you said in the rain
46:15I meant every word
46:16But I'm not rushing you
46:17Just pass the ball
46:19We'll figure out the rest
46:21Still got it captain
46:24Never lost it
46:27There they are
46:28My front two
46:29Whatever happened between them
46:30The field always brings them home
46:35So you told your father no
46:38This morning
46:39I'm officially disinherited
46:41No trust
46:41No name
46:42No penthouse
46:42I'm sleeping on coach's couch right now
46:45Because of me
46:46Because of me
46:47I finally chose my own life
46:49Best decision I've ever made
46:53I turned down Adrian's immediate offer
46:54I'm playing the finals
46:56With the team
46:58You're staying?
47:00Don't read into it
47:01I just don't like leaving things unfinished
47:06Wear it tomorrow
47:07Just once
47:09That's the captain's armband
47:10That's yours
47:11Being captain was never about the armband
47:15It's about who the team fights for
47:16And tomorrow I want them fighting for you
47:20Why do you keep doing this?
47:23Giving me things I don't know how to accept
47:26Because you taught me the difference
47:29This isn't me controlling you
47:31This is me trusting you
47:32With the most important thing I have
47:40Interesting
47:41Rias is wearing the captain's armband today
47:43With Cross's blessing
47:45And look at that
47:45These two are back in sync
47:55That second goal
47:56The give and go
47:56That was clean
47:58Was that a compliment Jake?
48:01Don't get used to it
48:02I still think you two are insufferable
48:05Coming from you
48:06That's basically a love letter
48:10Isn't that Richard Cross?
48:11I thought he disowned his son
48:12Over this team
48:14Then why is he here
48:15Watching every move that boy makes?
48:21He came
48:23He disowned me
48:24And he still came to watch
48:26What does that even mean?
48:30The opponents are throwing everything forward now
48:33Ashford's clinging to a one goal lead
48:3520 minutes to the final
48:39Evan
48:40Evan talk to me
48:41Where does it hurt?
48:44Ankle
48:44It's bad
48:45I can't
48:46I can't put weight on it
48:50Don't you dare stay down
48:51You hear me?
48:52We started this together
48:53We finish it together
48:56I taught you that line
48:58Then live up to it
49:00Get patched up
49:00And get back
49:01I'll hold the line till you do
49:05Matea
49:06Whatever happens
49:07Don't
49:08Don't say goodbye things
49:09Save them
49:11Tell me after we win
49:18Ashford down to 10 men
49:20Clinging to a one goal lead
49:23And Rivas
49:24Wearing that arm pad
49:26Is everywhere
49:27Defending
49:28Organizing
49:29Driving them forward
49:31Hold the shape
49:33Jake
49:33Cover the left
49:35We bleed the clock together
49:38On it captain
49:55We won
49:56Two to one
49:57We're in the finals
49:59I saw
50:01You were incredible out there
50:02You held the whole team together
50:03Here
50:04Take it back
50:05This is yours
50:06I only borrowed it
50:08Keep it for the finals
50:09We're not done yet
50:13The doctor said
50:14Will you be able to play in the finals?
50:16Let's worry about that later
50:18Right now
50:19You just carried a 10-man team
50:20Into a national final
50:23Let yourself enjoy it
50:29Mateo
50:30You carried the team with 10 men
50:32Who inspired that performance?
50:33My captain
50:34He's the best midfielder in the country
50:37Everything I did out there
50:38I learned from playing next to him
50:44Were you watching my interview?
50:46No
50:47It was on
50:48Sports Channel
50:49You really think I'm the best?
50:51That's what you took from my whole career?
50:53That I called you the best?
50:54You said it on national TV
50:56Weeks ago
50:57The best striker this school has ever seen
50:59I never forgot
51:00I meant it
51:02I've always meant it
51:08After the finals
51:10Together
51:11That's the only way I want to figure anything out from now on
51:42You're still my son
51:43Even if you're a stubborn fool who threw away an empire
51:49Why now?
51:50Your mother hasn't talking about that mechanic's son
51:54Says he's got more heart than anyone on that field
51:57Says he carried a 10-man team into a final
52:00I watch that semi-tile
52:01Every minute
52:03That boy
52:04He plays like the game is the only thing that ever loved him back
52:09I'm starting to think she's right about him
52:12Dad, I
52:12Win tomorrow, Evan
52:14Both of you
52:14That's all I came to say
52:15He didn't apologize
52:17He probably never will
52:20But he made me shoes before he disowned me
52:23And he watched every minute of a game he swore he didn't care about
52:27And it's enough
52:31For now it's enough
52:34Still scoreless in the 88th minute of the national final
52:38Cross is playing through a clear ankle injury
52:41You have to admire the heart on this kid
52:45Same as training
52:46Far post
52:46I'm there
52:47Give it to me
52:54Goal cross
52:55On a bad ankle
52:57In the 88th minute of the national final
53:00Rivas with the assist
53:021-0
53:03Ashford lead
53:07You did it
53:08You crazy stubborn idiot
53:10You actually did it
53:11We did it
53:12Same line, remember?
53:21After the whistle
53:22I have something to say to you
53:24Something I'm finally ready to say
53:25I'll be waiting for that whistle
53:28One more whistle
53:29Just one
53:32And then I'm gonna say the thing I've been running from
53:33Since the day he blocked Jake from me in that shower room
53:37No more running
53:38Not anymore
53:44Evan Cross
53:44National champions
53:46Who do you most want to thank right now?
53:50This guy
53:50Right here
53:52He taught me that being a captain isn't about controlling people
53:55It's about trusting them
53:58I spent years thinking I had to carry everyone
54:01He showed me what it means to stand beside someone
54:04Instead of over them
54:05Mateo
54:06Anything to add?
54:08Yeah, a few things
54:11First
54:13He's really, really annoying
54:15He follows me on scooters
54:17Hides behind plants
54:18Buys me shoes I never asked for
54:21But he also gave up everything
54:22His name
54:23His inheritance
54:24His whole world
54:25And never once asked me to be grateful
54:27He just
54:28Stood beside me
54:30In the rain
54:31In the storm
54:32Every single time
54:33So here's what I've been running from
54:36He's annoying
54:37He's impossible
54:38And he's my annoying impossible captain
54:40And I'm done pretending I don't want him to stay that way
54:45You said it
54:46In front of the whole country
54:48You actually said it
54:49No more running
54:50I meant every word
54:55MLS draft results are official
54:57Evan Cross
54:58First round third overall
54:59And you?
55:01Mateo Riedis
55:02First round fifth overall
55:04Third beats fifth
55:05Just saying
55:07The scout said fifth had higher ceiling
55:09Just saying
55:13Adrian called me yesterday
55:14His development program was a real offer
55:16He said
55:18He always knew I'd end up here
55:20With you
55:23What'd you tell him?
55:25I told him I already got the best offer
55:27Same team
55:28Same line
55:28Same annoying captain
55:30Couldn't turn that down
55:33My father sent a message this morning too
55:36Just three words
55:38What'd it say?
55:39Make me proud
55:40Not the family
55:41Not the name
55:42Not the name
55:43Just me
55:45Make me proud
55:45First time in my life
55:47You already have
55:48A dozen times over
55:50So
55:51New team
55:52New league
55:52New everything
55:53Ready partner?
55:54Born ready
