Only 4.2 light-years away, Proxima Centauri b is one of the most intriguing exoplanets near our Solar System.

The planet orbits Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf star capable of powerful stellar activity. Although the planet lies within the star's habitable zone, its environment could be dramatically different from Earth's.

If it is tidally locked, one hemisphere could experience permanent daylight while the other remains in darkness, leaving a narrow twilight region between them.

Powerful stellar radiation could make the surface challenging for life. If life exists, protected environments such as underground habitats or deep oceans could be possibilities worth investigating.

Beautiful. Brutal. And our closest neighboring exoplanet. ๐ŸŒŒ

00:00Imagine trying to live on our closest alien planet.
00:04This is Proxima Centauri B, just 4.2 light-years away.
00:09A super-Earth, 1.3 times bigger than Earth, with an 11-day year.
00:14It is tidally locked.
00:17One side is trapped in permanent, scorching daylight.
00:21The other side is frozen in eternal darkness.
00:24The only place you could possibly survive is the thin line in between.
00:30A twilight ring, called the Terminator Zone.
00:33Its star is a violent red dwarf that unleashes apocalyptic flares.
00:38This planet gets blasted with 400 times more X-ray radiation than Earth.
00:44Enough radiation to completely strip away an atmosphere.
00:48And yet, it sits right inside the habitable zone.
00:53Liquid water could exist there.
00:55If life does exist, it would not be on the surface.
01:00It would have to be hiding deep underground, or deep in an ocean, to survive the flares.
01:06Beautiful.
01:07Brutal.
01:08And our closest neighbor.
