Soil Worship Before Creating the Durga Idol, Before the Durga Puja Festival Begins | Mrittika Puja & Khuti Puja on Vaman Dwadashi

Utkal Durga Puja Committee, Malwa Colony, Near New Moti Bagh, Patiala, Punjab - 147001 presents the sacred ritual performed before the Durga Puja festival begins.
On the auspicious occasion of Vaman Dwadashi, as per Shubh Din, we perform Soil Worship before creating the Durga idol.
This ritual is known as: • Mati Puja / Mrittika Puja - Worship of Sacred Soil • Khuti Puja - Installation of the First Bamboo Pole for the Pandal • Bhumi Pujan - Worship of Mother Earth
Significance: According to Bengali tradition, the Durga Puja festival begins with the worship of soil. The sacred soil is collected and worshipped before it is used to create the idol of Goddess Durga. It is believed that Mitti Hi Maa Hai - the soil itself is the Mother. Without this Soil Worship, the creation of the Durga idol cannot begin.
On Vaman Dwadashi, which marks the birth anniversary of Lord Vamana, the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu, our priest performs the rituals and installs the first Khuti, marking the official start of Durga Puja preparations.
