Putin’s Party Wins 58% In Russia Vote | Kremlin Tightens Grip On Parliament

Russia’s ruling United Russia party has secured a record 355 of 450 seats in the State Duma, according to near-complete official results, giving the party a larger constitutional majority. The Central Election Commission reported 57.83% of the party-list vote with more than 95% of ballots counted.

The election was the first Russian parliamentary vote since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and took place amid war, economic pressure and restrictions on political opposition. Critics and foreign governments have questioned the competitiveness and fairness of the electoral process, particularly the exclusion of opposition figures and voting held in Ukrainian territories claimed by Moscow.

In Chechnya, Kremlin ally Ramzan Kadyrov was officially re-elected with 99.85% of the vote, according to Russia’s Central Election Commission.

With United Russia set to control around four-fifths of the Duma, the result gives Vladimir Putin’s governing party substantial legislative power as the war in Ukraine continues.
