A country smaller than Connecticut spreads around $400 billion across more than forty countries. Two generations ago, Qatar was a nation of pearl divers. Today it buys TV networks, soccer clubs, universities — and a seat at the world's hardest negotiations.

This is not a simple rags-to-riches story. Offshore lies the North Field — one of the largest gas reservoirs on Earth, shared with Iran. After a bloodless 1995 power shift, Emir Hamad bet the country on LNG. The gamble paid off: Qatar became a top liquefied natural gas exporter, and Doha rose from sand to skyline in decades.

Then came the insurance policy. Al Jazeera. Paris Saint-Germain. Branch campuses. The 2022 World Cup. In 2017, when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt cut ties and sealed Qatar's only land border, supermarket shelves emptied overnight — and Qatar answered by flying in dairy cows and leaning on Al Udeid, the largest U.S. military base in the Middle East.

But soft power has a human cost. About 90% of Qatar's population are foreign nationals, many under the kafala sponsorship system. Official stadium-linked death counts and investigative tallies still clash — from dozens, to hundreds, to more than 6,500 migrant deaths from five South Asian countries over a decade after the World Cup bid. Reforms in 2020 changed the law; enforcement remains contested.

Gas wealth. Soft power. Survival between bigger neighbors. And the hands that actually built the skyline.
