00:00We're following some breaking news. President Trump says he is banning three media outlets from the White House.
00:06In a social media post, the president accused CNN, Politico and MSNOW of constantly reporting what he called fake news.
00:16NBC's Shannon Pettypiece is outside the White House for us to bring us more on this.
00:20Shannon, help us understand the context here. These are three outlets who have had a seat inside the White House,
00:27right, up until now.
00:28What is the president saying? And has there been any comment from those outlets?
00:33I mean, obviously, this just broke moments ago, so I don't have any update for you yet on how those
00:38outlets are responding or any action that's been taken on the White House.
00:41You know, just by way of a little bit of background, media organizations can apply for a pass to access
00:47the White House.
00:48Those organizations have cameras here, they have workspaces, and they're routinely part of this group of White House reporters that
00:55goes into Oval Office events that can ask the president questions when he's taking off in the helicopter, can attend
01:01press briefings.
01:01So that's what we're talking about here. I will say this is not the first time we have seen efforts
01:08by the White House, specifically the Trump White House, either in the first term and now the second term, to
01:14restrict press access because of reporters' viewpoints.
01:18There has been a legal back and forth going on for over a year now between the Associated Press and
01:24the White House after the White House tried to limit the AP's access to certain parts of the White House
01:31because they didn't like the Associated Press' style guide around Gulf of America versus Gulf of Mexico.
01:37Back in the first Trump administration, they tried to revoke press access to CNN reporter Jim Acosta, another reporter at
01:45the time for Playboy magazine, they attempted to restrict access.
01:49So we have seen this before. And in general, the courts have sided with reporters and that there is a
01:54value to freedom of the press and essentially saying the White House can't discriminate against a media organization because of
02:01its viewpoint.
02:02So obviously, we'll have to see how that plays out here. But a little bit of background for you on
02:07this.
02:07Right. But just to be clear, or do we know any more about what actually would happen to these organizations
02:13based on this One Truth Social post?
02:17Well, we don't. But there is a physical pass, like a security pass, that's issued to reporters to get access
02:25into the grounds.
02:27So if you revoked that pass access, people would not be able to get through the Secret Service gates, essentially,
02:34is how one way this could logistically play out.
02:36All right. Shannon Pettypiece at the White House following that breaking news for us. Thank you.
02:40We thank you for watching. And remember, stay updated on breaking news and top stories on the NBC News app
