Nissan has announced plans to launch a new model in Europe and will invest £170m to build it at its plant in the UK, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary.

The Nissan Kicks – a compact (B-segment) crossover – features Nissan’s unique e-POWER hybrid technology and will be manufactured in Sunderland, alongside the Qashqai, Juke and LEAF.

Kicks is the second exciting product update from Nissan in Europe this month following the announcement of a new A-segment small electric car, which will be called PIXO and is to be unveiled next week.

The second-generation Kicks model is currently built in Japan, Mexico and Brazil for sale globally. In total, Kicks has surpassed 1.8 million units sold in more than 70 countries. This announcement heralds the model’s European debut, adding a further e-POWER hybrid model to the range and ensuring Nissan continues to offer a variety of electrified powertrains to suit all customer needs.

00:00The Japanese car company Nissan has announced plans which should mean thousands of new jobs for Britain.
00:11First of all, it was just a job, but it's become more of a job.
00:15It's become part of Southern's history, part of Nissan's history.
00:22Forty years ago, something special started here.
00:27But what's made this place isn't the buildings, it's the passion of the people who work here.
00:33The people are really great here. It's really like one team mindset.
00:37I think it's the North East spirit. We're all grafters and we all look out for each other.
00:46It doesn't matter who you are.
00:48You're part of the team. We're all in it together.
00:50Some great times, some hard times, but you've got to be resilient.
00:54For me, the teamwork and togetherness is like unmatched.
00:57Challenges that are different every day.
00:59We'll always find a solution to every problem.
01:02We just won't be beat.
01:04There's so many opportunities to progress.
01:05Nissan feels special to me because it creates innovation, reliability and a strong team culture.
01:10I'm proud of working at Nissan because it's given us the opportunity to train and learn things that I would
01:14never learn outside of the factory.
01:15From the Bluebird, we then moved on to the Primera, the Micra, Almira, Note, Qashqai, the Duke, Infinity and now
01:25Brand New Leaf.
01:28The same mindset, the same passion, the same resilience and that never say die attitude.
01:35I was there from day one and I feel proud that I was there from day one.
01:44For 40 years, generations of people have shaped this plant, our community and our story.
01:52To everyone who has been part of that journey, I want to say thank you.
02:06I wouldn't sort of change a thing.
02:08I really enjoyed my work.
02:09I really enjoyed the people I work with.
