00:00It feels strange to say it, as the show is one of the best and most re-watchable sitcoms of
00:04all time,
00:04but there was a time when Parks and Recreation just wasn't very good,
00:08and for a number of reasons, yet again, many of them come down to character development.
00:13If you look at the later years of the show, there is an entire cast of wonderful characters
00:17with years of experience and relationships to draw from, but this was not the case in Season 1.
00:21Most were largely one-dimensional, while certain popular figures weren't around yet,
00:26and others may as well not have been.
00:27Add this to the fact that Mark, who would later be replaced and upgraded in Season 3 by the Ben
00:32and Chris tandem,
00:34always felt like a square peg in a round hole.
00:36Leslie's infatuation with him only held her back, which brings us neatly onto Amy Poehler's now classic character.
00:43Once free from the combination of being a lovesick puppy that also came off as something of a cringey Michael
00:48Scott imitation,
00:49she grew into the kind of character that could lead a brilliant and funny show.
00:53She remained incredibly cringeworthy, but this was largely down to her untamable enthusiasm,
00:58something that made it impossible not to love and root for her.
01:01She was the unmitigated and unquestioned MVP.
01:04It just took a little while for the character to get there.
01:07She made her princesses in Season 1.
01:07She was the man who bought the song her car and she was the girl who well did.
01:07She rose to her, she grew into Clara hearts in Season 1.
01:09Be in time.
01:09She puns the guy who used to love her!
01:11She must laugh.
01:11She was the child, I asked her, while that being a little bit drunk,
01:13she was the mother that I wanted to love herself.
01:13She meant to be an Wei for herself, but it's good everything she ate here,
01:14and she did the song that I couldn't find a family.
01:14So what she's done here might be.
