Old skills meets new technology at Ireland's ploughing championships

Amid the roar of tractors and clip-clop of horses, precision, tradition and technology meet in rural Ireland's biggest annual gathering: the National Ploughing Championships, where horse-drawn ploughs and GPS-guided machinery offer contrasting visions of farming’s past and future. Veteran competitors preserve skills once passed down through generations, while engineers explore how "autonomous tractors" could support an ageing workforce. "If the diesel goes any dearer like it is in Europe we'll be all back to these," says 70-year-old competitor Jerry Dennehy about horse-drawn ploughs. "Most of them won't know a horse's head from his arse, but we'll be able to show them."
