00:00I think I gotta give away this hat.
00:02Now may not be the time for the conversation about that.
00:05Is that timing?
00:07Yeah.
00:09You gotta pick your spots.
00:13But the big story here in this one.
00:18Physical condition of the current Never Openweight Champion
00:23and his very worthy challenger.
00:26And what these two men will look to accomplish here
00:32as they battle for the Never Openweight title.
00:39Ladies and gentlemen, this is Never Openweight Class Championship.
00:59And the blue corner, the challenger from R. Louis, Kyle O'Reilly.
01:09What a confident fighter he looks to be as he approaches the ring.
01:13Absolutely.
01:14And Kyle O'Reilly, Ring of Honor, Ring of Honor fans,
01:18will know has a victory over Shibata at Field of Honor in Brooklyn, New York.
01:24And going into this match knowing that Shibata is not at 100%.
01:28What's that?
01:29Out corner, challenger.

01:45This victory that O'Reilly got over Shibata.

02:12R. Louis.
02:15and you live the fight another day
02:17hopefully
02:18and that day is right now
02:20and again
02:22Kavada was locked in the omoplata
02:25and he couldn't get to the ropes
02:27he wasn't going to tap out
02:29Jeffrey Tiger Hattori decided
02:31it's a non-title situation
02:34call for the bell
02:35let's stop the fight
02:36award the victory to O'Reilly
02:38and that has opened the door
02:40for this title opportunity
02:41Now, the story, of course, going in, it's been rumored, reported, Shibata dealing with a neck injury, cervical, spinal, something
02:53you're very familiar with, personally.
02:55Yeah, absolutely, and 11 months ago, I had, you know, three vertebrae fused together, team 4-5-6, you know,
03:03and I was told my career, my in-ring career is over, and, you know, I survived, it changed everything.
03:09But when you hear that news, that, you know, depression, bulges, you know, discs using together on their own, you
03:18know, that's very scary, especially for a guy that's fought all his life, like Shibata.
03:23We don't know the exact diagnosis, you know, it's been vague, it's been rumors, you know, he is taped up
03:32from his shoulder, and, you know, that's more to protect the trap muscles.
03:40Yeah, we have heard that he's had numbness down in his fingers, and that's a scary, scary thought, too.
03:45And again, a lot of that, you know, just the rumors, so, uh, that she was presenting the never-open
03:51weight title, this is what is at stake.
03:53And since he debuted in New Japan, 1999, as a 20-year-old young lion, Shibata has certainly been a
04:00fighter.
04:01Was rather defiant in his early career, and walked away from New Japan, returned, and claimed the never-open weight
04:07title as his own first singles belt held by Shibata in his career.
04:11So, O'Reilly goes into this, I think Steve knowing what he has to do.
04:17And I believe that if I'm Shibata, I want to end this quick, but you're talking about Kyle O'Reilly,
04:23a trained fighter, a man that has put on about 15 to 17 pounds of floor muscle over the last
04:30few months.
04:30This is, you know, this guy is a maniac in the gym, you know, hired a personal trainer to put
04:37on muscle mass, to go up into the heavyweight division.
04:42You know, another rumor that we've been hearing is both members of Red Dragon wanted to become heavyweights.
04:47Like, they both changed their workout routines, Bobby Fischi, a big supporter of CrossFit style of training.
04:57Kyle O'Reilly, you know, Kyle O'Reilly adding on to the jiu-jitsu, he added on, you know, strength
05:03training, weight training, power lifting, Olympic lifting, and it shows.
05:11Shibata, throws the kick, O'Reilly traps the leg.
05:15Wow, this is going to be something.
05:17Yeah, to the guard here, and see who can gain advantage out of this situation.
05:25Now, Ring of Honor fans that had watched Field of Honor from Brooklyn knew that Bobby Fischi had sat with
05:30us and did telecommentary.
05:33Now, with the Never Openweight Championship on the line, Bobby Fischi seconding Kyle O'Reilly, giving him instructions like a
05:42good coach, good partner.
05:44This match more of an MMA style match, especially here in the beginning.
05:51O'Reilly talked about, as of late, his reactive style.
05:56If the leg is blocked, he goes for the arm.
05:58If the arm is blocked, he goes for the leg.
06:01He is not necessarily married to the school of thought in pro wrestling, traditionally, of focus on one body part.
06:07Right, and, you know, that's something that was taught to me 22, 23 years ago.
06:11Pick apart and stick with it.
06:13You know, the Anderson brothers, through the 70s, early 80s, grab the arm, stuck with it.
06:18Ric Flair, through the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, grab the leg, stuck with it.
06:23A guy like Kyle O'Reilly is a hybrid.
06:26Bobby Fisch, hybrid.
06:27They will pick different parts of the body so that they can, you know, use multiple finishing maneuvers to get
06:37that victory.
06:39And, to me, this new style of fighter, this new school hybrid type of fighter, makes them the most dangerous
06:46wrestlers in the entire world.
06:49Shibata, same way.
06:50He's not going to just beat you one way.
06:53He's got 14 different ways.
06:54Yeah, and the Bull Nelson snap there.
06:58Watch this.
07:00Goes for that quick kick like lightning.
07:04O'Reilly gets out of the way.
07:07Now, looking at Shibata, you know, I would venture to say that he's 8 to 10 pounds down.
07:13His right arm looks a little smaller than his left arm, which shows a lot of exposure of the neck
07:21injury.
07:21You know, sometimes with the neck injury, the nerve damage that goes down your arms, whether it be the right
07:28arm, left arm,
07:28and that's going to affect your workouts.
07:31Sure.
07:31You're going to feel, you know, less strong, of course.
07:36And you're doing a lot of recovery type, you know, you're going through physical therapy as opposed to a traditional
07:44training.
07:45Now, with the arm bent, oh, and hyperextended right to the tricep.
07:56Now, Shibata trying to stay on the mat more, which I think is very smart.
08:00He's keeping the, he's using a lot of his legs.
08:04He threw kicks early.
08:05He stayed away.
08:06Now, trapping the arm, arm scissors with the leg.
08:10Which is smart if the right arm is, you know, definitely, if it is weaker, you know, we don't know
08:15for sure.
08:18If it's weaker, you know, he's going to try and use those legs to his advantage.
08:22It's a great game plan, but don't think that Kyle O'Reilly doesn't know that.
08:26Yeah, and Shibata had connected early on the, on the leg and now the arm.
08:36There's a lot of respect here between these two, these two fighters.
08:41Shibata left himself open.
08:43Kyle capitalized.
08:45And that's knowing your opponent.
08:47Just like you said, Shibata might use his legs more, right?
08:50Now, Kyle, what for the legs?
08:52Try and take down those legs.
08:53Yeah, the palm strikes were blocked.
08:56So, since that's the defensive strategy, the arm is available.
09:00Let's take that.
09:00Now to the body scissors.
09:02And now back up top to the neck.
09:04And this is the first time that O'Reilly's been able to trap the head.
09:07The right arm open.
09:08He'll go to the right arm.
09:09Right.
09:10And then, you know, just from experience knowing that, you know, with a neck injury,
09:16maybe one of the arms is going to be your weak point.
09:20Kyle O'Reilly.
09:21That's it.
09:21Bring it, bring it, bring it.
09:23And now the right arm.
09:24Come on.
09:25Come on.
09:26Come on.
09:27Come on.
09:27Come on.
09:27Come on.
09:27Come on.
09:28Come on.
09:28Come on.
09:28Come on.
09:28And Shibata screams.
09:30He's in pain.
09:33So, if you would.
09:37Just looking at the way the tape job is done, the injury probably radiating down through his
09:45trap on the right side coming into behind the shoulder.
09:49And now, yeah.
09:51And I got to question Shibata's thought process and strategy right there.
09:56He has a 20 count to get back in the ring.
09:59You know, it might have been time to shake off the cobwebs.
10:02But there's where pride takes over.
10:04That fighting spirit takes over.
10:06Where he wants to get back in and fight.
10:09Came in a little early.
10:11Kyle O'Reilly's now taking advantage of that.
10:14He's gone after that arm.
10:16Now to the neck.
10:17Yeah, Shibata was not available at all today.
10:20We had asked if we could speak to him for a few moments.
10:24He was not out during any pre-event workouts at all.
10:31And there was a lot of speculation as to whether or not this match would even take place after
10:37it was announced.
10:39Because of the condition of Shibata.
10:41And O'Reilly doing what he has to do to win this match.
10:46We saw Kyle O'Reilly sporting himself in the gym as we were at breakfast.
10:51And he had a calmness about him.
10:56An intense calmness, right?
10:57And almost reticent in a way, knowing what he had to do.
11:00But he knows what he has to do.
11:02Focus.
11:03I mean, absolutely, 100% focus.
11:05He was in the same situation a few months ago in Ring of Honor when he had the world title
11:10opportunity and Bullet Club attacked and went after his shoulder, heard him, and he went
11:15ahead and went with the title match anyway.
11:18Hindsight being 20-20, he probably should have, again, followed Doctor's advice.
11:23Nigel McGuinness' advice had not gone ahead with the title match that night.
11:25Anyway, he knows what Shibata's going through here.
11:33And the combination, the flurry from O'Reilly, who knows that in this big spot, in this big
11:41moment, he's got an opportunity to claim the never-open-weight title at King of Pro Wrestling.
11:51And the back into, like, now look at that, a transition from right arm to left arm.
11:57Back and neck with the back suplex.
12:00Then right into the leg.
12:02If you are on the defense, you do not know how to fight this guy.
12:07You know, sometimes, you know, I'll watch a very serious professional wrestling match like this
12:11and think of, okay, if I was Shibata, what would I be thinking at this moment?
12:17Now, right there comes into play the bigger ring.
12:21Ring of Honor ring, 18 by 18.
12:23New Japan Wrestling ring, 20 by 20.
12:25Kyle O'Reilly knew this.
12:27He saw that Shibata was going for the ropes, pulled him to the middle.
12:31Now, if they were wrestling in a Ring of Honor ring, that might have been a rope ring.
12:34And after that back suplex, oh, Shibata, many times a back suplex leads to a pin cover.
12:41But instead, O'Reilly quick went to the leg.
12:44And now Shibata.
12:46Ah!
12:47Ha, ha, ha.
12:48Listen, he may be in a ton of pain.
12:50He may be feeling just rotten right now.
12:54But at the end of the day, he is Shibata.
12:57And he is one badass.
12:59Come on, Kyle!
13:01He's literally saying, come on, bring it.
13:06Oh, and O'Reilly, his knees buckled.
13:11Whatever strength he had left in that right arm, he just, man, left it all on the point of the
13:16chin of Kyle O'Reilly.
13:22Extends the boot.
13:24Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute.
13:25Oh, Shibata.
13:29You hear Bobby Fish in the corner with encouragement for his Red Dragon partner.
13:33Come on, left.
13:35He's got to get out of the corner.
13:39Caught in, caught Kyle right in the ear.
13:43You can see Kyle's eyes closed.
13:45Make, you know, you know he's trying to, make sure he knows where he's at, trying not to lose consciousness.
13:53Yeah!
13:55Cover!
13:56Cover!
13:57Kick, kick, kick!
13:57Floats over.
13:58Cover.
13:59Two count only.
14:00Two count only.
14:01Now, here's where Shibata, the injury, the pain comes through.
14:06That adrenaline's only going to run so much.
14:08I was very surprised that Shibata didn't follow it up with, you know, a cross arm breaker.
14:15Now, he goes to the chin lock, trying to slow down.
14:18He was trying to keep down.
14:19Now, we're into an abdominal stretch, and he's got it on perfectly.
14:23Gotta work, Kyle!
14:24Left arm behind the left calf.
14:26You gotta work, baby!
14:28You gotta work!
14:30Great, great transition.
14:32Into the octopus.
14:34Come on, you see?
14:35Gotta work, Kyle!
14:36Revenous of Antonio Gnocchi pulling in on him.
14:39Now into almost a ground cobra twist.
14:43He turns that into a penny position.
14:45Kyle's going to be in some trouble.
14:47Shibata's got to watch his shoulders, but Kyle turns, and they get to the ropes.
14:53We're just over the 10-minute mark here.
14:59Third or fourth title matches.
15:01Third or fourth title matches.
15:04Brought him up.
15:05Piquet, no.
15:07Shibata ahead of Steve.
15:09Uh-oh.
15:10And now O'Reilly.
15:15Delivers the boot.
15:18There he is!
15:20Ah!
15:22Don't stand there!
15:26Don't stand there!
15:27There we go!
15:29Bottom of the neck guillotine, you know, a move that Kyle O'Reilly uses and knows.
15:36Come on, go, go!
15:38Here's where the extra muscle mass is going to come in to be a positive for Kyle O'Reilly.
15:43Allowing him to stay in that vertical base.
15:46And giving him some extra strength to be able to do that to Shibata, who now transitions for a naked
15:51choke.
15:51No, no, no, no!
15:53He split his own head open, hitting Bobby Fish with a headbutt in a successful never-open-weight title defense.
16:01Head and leg suplex!
16:03Great popping in the hips there.
16:05He goes for the cover this time!
16:07We win by Pitfall!
16:08Shibata kicks out.
16:11Once again, changing the game plan, or, I mean, this is the game plan, but changing that speed, changing the
16:19momentum, going from the arm to the leg, now back to the neck.
16:25So, O'Reilly got eyes on Shibata.
16:28You see Shibata reaching out with that left arm.
16:31As O'Reilly recovering himself, which body part will Kyle attack next?
16:35Instead, it looks like he's going to go for a brain buster here.
16:42Oh, now he's wrenching it on that neck.
16:47And, again, blocking the suplex gives O'Reilly the opportunity to go after the injured neck.
16:56And could be choking him out.
16:57There was a moment in time in their matchup at Field of Honor where it looked like Shibata lost consciousness.
17:02Beautiful brain buster.
17:05Shibata's eyes on the back of his head.
17:07Into the cross-arm breaker.
17:09Cross-arm breaker just that quick.
17:10Shibata, desperate.
17:13Look at this, they're fighting.
17:14He just put himself into a triangle.
17:17He's in the triangle.
17:19Shibata turned inward.
17:23Shibata's got to use every last bit of energy to try and powerbomb O'Reilly out of this.
17:31But he is in trouble.
17:32Kevin Kelly, he is in big trouble.
17:35He might be out or could be looking at a stoppage here any second.
17:39He's out, he's out, he's out.
17:40You hear Bobby Fish saying he's out, he's out.
17:45Stay with it.
17:49Shibata trying to, oh.
17:54You can see now O'Reilly was not driving the elbow point into the head.
17:59He was actually driving his tricep down to cinch that in even more.
18:07O'Reilly was trying to powerbomb his way out of that.
18:10And he got to the rope somehow.
18:15O'Reilly felt what Shibata was thinking.
18:19And if Shibata falls the other way, he falls in the middle of the ring and we have a new
18:25champion.
18:26He would have had no choice but to tap out.
18:28Shibata was actually thinking about trying to powerbomb his way out of that.
18:34And now to the focus on the right arm.
18:37Oh, which then leaves O'Reilly open for the rear naked choke.
18:47O'Reilly gets the rope.
18:49Rope breaks.
18:50Oh, Saito suplex.
18:52And now, throwing German.
18:55Wait a minute.
18:57Huge throwing German.
18:59Oh, roaring elbow, P.K.
19:04Bunkbear down.
19:11We're at the 15-minute mark.
19:14And listen to this crowd.
19:26Rihogoku Sumo Hall, Kyle O'Reilly, Katsiori Shibata.
19:30You've got to be up first.
19:32There have been 12 never openweight champions, but none of them have been a foreigner.
19:38Kyle O'Reilly is trying to become not only the 13th champion, but the first foreigner
19:43to hold that never openweight championship.
19:53Combinations, Kyle! Combinations!
19:58More than one!
20:08Come on, Kyle!
20:14Both men down once again.
20:20What a match.
20:23Take down, Kyle.
20:24This is it!
20:33Now's the time, Kyle.
20:34Now they're now.
20:36Bobby Fisch says now.
20:38And he just nearly decoupled.
20:41What?
20:41Oh, Shibata kicks out at one.
20:43Now wide open.
20:45P.K.
20:46From O'Reilly.
20:47Has he done it?
20:49No!
20:50Oh!
20:51What do you need to do to keep this guy down?
20:58Oh!
20:59Oh!
21:00Oh!
21:01Oh!
21:02Oh!
21:02Oh!
21:04Oh!
21:05Oh!
21:05Oh!
21:08Oh!
21:09And put his knee almost on his neck to pin him.
21:12Only got it once.
21:13Followed up with a P.K. kick.
21:15Got it, too.
21:18Oh!
21:18Now he's just assaulting him.
21:21Oh, man.
21:23Oh!
21:25Oh!
21:27Got him!
21:28Rear naked choke!
21:32Fight the hands, Kyle!
21:35Fight the hands!
21:36Oh!
21:36Shibata fighting him!
21:38He's got it locked in!
21:39O'Reilly goes in!
21:41P.K!
21:42Oh!
21:42P.K!
21:43And back to the choke!
21:45He's gonna choke him out!
21:46Fight the hands, Kyle!
21:48Fight the hands!
21:49Now you see Kyle.
21:50You can't see it on camera, but he's trying to keep his chin to his chest so that Shibata does
21:55not get the full choke on.
21:58This is really his only defense right now, but now he's in trouble.
22:02Now he's stuck.
22:04Get under there, Kyle!
22:07He's gonna go out.
22:08Oh, there goes the mouthpiece.
22:10Red shoes is right there.
22:11Oh, you can just see, look, he's turning purple.
22:14And it's a stoppage!
22:15It's a stoppage!
22:18And he's gotta let it go!
22:25What a classic match there!
22:28Shibata wins!
22:31TKO there, referee stoppage!
22:34Bobby Fish jumping right in.
22:37Doctor right there, the ice pack very quickly being applied.
22:41to Kyle O'Reilly to help bring him back to consciousness.
22:45But what an effort by both men.
22:48What an effort by Katsuyori Shibata, still your never-open weight champion.
22:53What a match!
23:00And now Shibata, even with both members of Red Dragon 1-1.
23:05He's still never-open weight class champion, Katsuyori Shibata!
23:15Shibata successfully defense here.
23:17But, man, what a battle.
23:21What a two warriors.
23:24Look at Shibata standing over Kyle O'Reilly.
23:27I know last year.
23:29Yeah.
23:30Whoa!
23:32That's great.
23:34That's great right there.
23:37These men respect each other implicitly.
23:40And if you know the history of Shibata.
23:44Brave respect shown by O'Reilly.
23:47You don't see this a lot.
23:49But there are two men that have victories over Shibata.
23:54Shibata recognizes that.
23:59Dare I say.
24:01Hey, I-
24:02This is the beginning of something big right here.
24:04Definitely.
24:05With these three warriors.
24:08Shooting gallery that would be.
24:10So, Shibata is your winner.
24:14Shibata retained successfully by referees stopping.
24:17That's a good pitch.
24:20O'Reilly, to me, Steve, there was not one mistake made.
24:25No.
24:26Flawless.
24:27Not one thing he can look back on the tape and say, oh, if I only would have done this.
24:31And absolutely.
24:33And, you know, Shibata, even though the winner, a near flawless match.
24:37Pride took him back in the ring and not, uh, taking advantage of that 20 count.
24:43But he's the guy that won.
24:44So, am I wrong or is he wrong?
24:47I'm wrong.
24:48He's the winner and he's still champion.
24:50He's still gotta have-
24:51He needs significant time off.
24:54We know that.
24:54He can't just all of a sudden-
24:59What's going on here?
25:02Oh.
25:04Look who it is.
25:06Go Shiozaki has appeared at ringside.
25:09in the ring on the apron.
25:24Shiozaki!
25:34Shiozaki making his intentions known,
25:38et il ne veut pas être le prochain challenger
25:44et Shibata n'est pas en basant à l'autre
25:47il m'a dit qu'il faut sortir de sa ring
25:52mais Goh Shiozaki sending un message
25:55à Shibata
25:59un très cocky Goh Shiozaki
26:08Oh, wait a minute, watch out
26:10What do you mean, what?
26:12Evil, Evil comes in
26:14Evil
26:17From behind, a sneak attack
26:21Evil has let his intentions know
26:26Remember, Evil has a victory
26:29Over Shibata in the G1 Climax
26:33And we wondered when Evil was going to let Shibata know
26:39That he was next
26:52So Evil
26:57Could that mean he goes after
26:59Bring the third title into Los Ngobernables de Japon
27:03Well, he's definitely let his intentions be known
27:09Shibata's got to look either way
27:12He's got Goh on one side
27:14From Pro Wrestling Noah
27:15He's got Evil from Los Ngobernables de Japon
27:20Good try
27:21It was a good one
27:23But both men
27:24What a shot at that Ngobernable title
27:27But you can't keep this kid down
27:30Shibata
27:32What a wrestler
27:34Yeah, he really earned his money tonight
27:37No doubt about it
27:38A successful title defense
27:40Against Kyle O'Reilly
27:42But then Goh Shiozaki
27:44Stepped up
27:48A war of words
27:50But then Evil from behind
27:52Physically making his presence known
27:55Holding that never open weight title
27:59Now Kevin Kelly
28:01We're approaching
28:02Our last two bouts here
28:05In Pro Wrestling
28:08And this one
28:09Has implications for the main event
28:12Amen
