Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday over the Iran war. He presented the resolution on the House floor and introduced it as privileged, a move that forces the House to take it up and compel a vote within days. Massie said Hegseth abused his powers by deploying the U.S. military against Iran without seeking congressional approval under the War Powers Act, describing the actions as unlawful orders and high crimes and misdemeanors.

Another accuses Hegseth of extrajudicial killings by bombing alleged drug-trafficking vessels in international waters without judicial process or congressional authorization, with at least 225 people killed. Further articles accuse him of threatening to court martial Sen. Mark Kelly, of illegally abducting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and of launching unauthorized combat operations in Yemen.

The Republican-controlled House is not expected to approve the resolution, though PBS and the American Conservative noted it would put lawmakers on record over Hegseth's leadership and the seven-month war. The American Conservative reported that Massie sits on the Judiciary Committee, and that Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-PA, and Tom Barrett, R-MI, previously joined Democrats and Massie in voting for measures to curb Trump's war powers.
